Abstract:Two dimensional gauge theories with charged matter fields are useful toy models for studying gauge theory dynamics, and in particular for studying the duality of large $N$ gauge theories to perturbative string theories. A useful starting point for such studies is the pure Yang-Mills theory, which is exactly solvable. Its $1/N$ expansion was interpreted as a string theory by Gross and Taylor 30 years ago, but they did not provide a worldsheet action for this string theory, and such an action is useful for coupling it to matter fields. The chiral sector of the Yang-Mills theory can be written as a sum over holomorphic maps and has useful worldsheet descriptions, but the full theory includes more general extremal-area maps; a formal worldsheet action including all these maps in a "topological rigid string theory" was written by Hořava many years ago, but various subtleties arise when trying to use it for computations. In this paper we suggest a Polyakov-like generalization of Hořava's worldsheet action which is well-defined, and we show how it reproduces the free limit of the Yang-Mills theory, both by formal arguments and by explicitly computing its partition function in several cases. In the future we plan to generalize this string theory to the finite-coupling gauge theory, and to analyze it with boundaries, corresponding either to Wilson loops or to dynamical matter fields in the fundamental representation.

Abstract:In this note we describe hadrons: mesons and baryons as strings with electric charges on their endpoints. We consider here only the neutral system with opposite charges, coupled to an external constant electromagnetic field. We derive certain classical solutions including rotating folded open strings. We write down the mode expansion and canonically quantize the system. The OPEs associated with such strings are determined. We rederive the non-commutativity of the zero modes and the fact that the charges modify the spacetime metric. We show that the quantum worldsheet energy momentum tensor on the boundary is affected by the endpoint charges and differs from the corresponding Noether current. We determine the generalization of the Veneziano scattering amplitude for such strings in the critical dimension. Phenomenological implications are addressed and in particular we show that the external magnetic field can be tuned so that the amplitude vanishes for particular kinematic setups. We discuss the generalization of such strings to non-critical four dimensional spacetime. In particular we renormalize the divergence of the Polchinski-Strominger effective action associated with the rotating folded string.

Abstract:I discuss the recent progress in bypassing the KPZ barrier for the existence of nonperturbative bosonic strings in $1<d<25$. I consider string anomalies which emerge from higher terms of the DeWitt-Seeley expansion as $\varepsilon \times \varepsilon^{-1}$ with $\varepsilon$ being a UV cutoff. I show they give a nonvanishing contribution to the central charge and to the string susceptibility, telling the Nambu-Goto and Polyakov strings apart. I describe an exact solution of the emerging four-derivative two-dimensional conformal theory and its relation to minimal models. Abstract:Is string theory uniquely determined by self-consistency? Causality and unitarity seemingly permit a multitude of putative deformations, at least at the level of two-to-two scattering. Motivated by this question, we initiate a systematic exploration of the constraints on scattering from higher-point factorization, which imposes extraordinarily restrictive sum rules on the residues and spectra defined by a given amplitude. These bounds handily exclude several proposed deformations of the string: the simplest "bespoke" amplitudes with tunable masses and a family of modified string integrands from "binary geometry." Lumpy cosmic strings

Abstract:We outline a model of abelian-Higgs strings with variable scalar and vector core radii. In general, the functions determining the time and position-dependent core widths may be expressed as arbitrary left or right movers, of which the usual constant values are a particular solution. In this case the string may carry momentum, even if the embedding of its central axis remains fixed, and the resulting objects resemble "necklaces". Some possible astrophysical applications of lumpy strings, including as potential engines for anomalous gamma ray bursts, are also discussed.

Abstract:The {\it string theory} seems to be a mathematically consistent way for explaining so far observed fermion and boson second quantized fields, with gravity included, by offering the renormalizability of the theory by extending the point fermions and bosons into strings and by offering the supersymmetry among fermions and bosons. In a long series of works one of the authors in collaboration with another author and other collaborators, has found the phenomenological success with the model named the {\it spin-charge-family} theory with the properties: The creation and annihilation operators for fermions and bosons fields are described as tensor products of the Clifford odd (for fermions) and the Clifford even (for bosons) ``basis vectors'' and basis in ordinary space, explaining the second quantization postulates. The theory offers the explanation for the observed properties of fermion and bosons and for several cosmological observations. Since the number of creation and annihilation operators for fermions and bosons is in this theory the same, manifesting correspondingly a kind of supersymmetry, the authors start to study in this contribution the properties of the creation and annihilation operators if extending the point fermions and bosons into strings, expecting that this theory offers the low energy limit for the {\it string theory}.

Abstract:In this paper we study the dynamics of a statistical ensemble of strings, building on a recently proposed gauge theory of the string geodesic field. We show that this stochastic approach is equivalent to the Carathéodory formulation of the Nambu-Goto action, supplemented by an averaging procedure over the family of classical string world-sheets which are solutions of the equation of motion. In this new framework, the string geodesic field is reinterpreted as the Gibbs current density associated with the string statistical ensemble. Next, we show that the classical field equations derived from the string gauge action, can be obtained as the semi-classical limit of the string functional wave equation. For closed strings, the wave equation itself is completely analogous to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation used in quantum cosmology. Thus, in the string case, the wave function has support on the space of all possible spatial loop configurations. Finally, we show that the string distribution induces a multi-phase, or {\it cellular} structure on the spacetime manifold characterized by domains with a purely Riemannian geometry separated by domain walls over which there exists a predominantly Weyl geometry.

Abstract:Canonical forms of positive geometries play an important role in revealing hidden structures of scattering amplitudes, from amplituhedra to associahedra. In this paper, we introduce "stringy canonical forms", which provide a natural definition and extension of canonical forms for general polytopes, deformed by a parameter $\alpha'$. They are defined by real or complex integrals regulated with polynomials with exponents, and are meromorphic functions of the exponents, sharing various properties of string amplitudes. As $\alpha' \to 0$, they reduce to the usual canonical form of a polytope given by the Minkowski sum of the Newton polytopes of the regulating polynomials, or equivalently the volume of the dual of this polytope, naturally determined by tropical functions. At finite $\alpha'$, they have simple poles corresponding to the facets of the polytope, with the residue on the pole given by the stringy canonical form of the facet. There is the remarkable connection between the $\alpha' \to 0$ limit of tree-level string amplitudes, and scattering equations that appear when studying the $\alpha' \to \infty$ limit. We show that there is a simple conceptual understanding of this phenomenon for any stringy canonical form: the saddle-point equations provide a diffeomorphism from the integration domain to the interior of the polytope, and thus the canonical form can be obtained as a pushforward via summing over saddle points. When the stringy canonical form is applied to the ABHY associahedron in kinematic space, it produces the usual Koba-Nielsen string integral, giving a direct path from particle to string amplitudes without an a priori reference to the string worldsheet. We also discuss a number of other examples, including stringy canonical forms for finite-type cluster algebras (with type A for string amplitudes), and other natural integrals over the positive Grassmannian.

Abstract:We consider gauge theories with scalar matter with and without supersymmetry at nonzero chemical potential. It is argued that a chemical potential plays a role similar to the FI term. We analyze theory at weak coupling regime at large chemical potential and argue that it supports nonabelian non-BPS strings. Worldsheet theory on the nonabelian string in a dense matter is briefly discussed.

Abstract:Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) describe a broad range of phenomena in condensed matter and particle physics. A prominent example is confinement, responsible for bounding quarks inside hadrons such as protons or neutrons. When quark-antiquark pairs are separated, the energy stored in the string of gluon fields connecting them grows linearly with their distance, until there is enough energy to create new pairs from the vacuum and break the string. While such phenomena are ubiquitous in LGTs, simulating the resulting dynamics is a challenging task. Here, we report the observation of string breaking in synthetic quantum matter using a programmable quantum simulator based on neutral atom arrays. We show that a (2+1)D LGT with dynamical matter can be efficiently implemented when the atoms are placed on a Kagome geometry, with a local U(1) symmetry emerging from the Rydberg blockade, while long-range Rydberg interactions naturally give rise to a linear confining potential for a pair of charges, allowing us to tune both their masses as well as the string tension. We experimentally map out the corresponding phase diagram by adiabatically preparing the ground state of the atom array in the presence of defects, and observe substructure of the confined phase, distinguishing regions dominated by fluctuating strings or by broken string configurations. Finally, by harnessing local control over the atomic detuning, we quench string states and observe string breaking dynamics exhibiting a many-body resonance phenomenon. Our work paves a way to explore phenomena in high-energy physics using programmable quantum simulators.

Abstract:We generalize the ideas and formalism of two-time physics from particle dynamics to some specific examples of string and p-brane (p≥1) dynamics. The two-time string or p-brane action can be gauge fixed to produce various one-time string or p-brane actions that are dual to each other under gauge transformations. We discuss the particular gauges that correspond to tensionless strings and p-branes in flat (d−1)+1 spacetime, rigid strings and p-branes in flat (d−1)+1 spacetime, and tensionless strings and p-branes propagating in the AdSd−n×Sn backgrounds.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present the α′ -exact background equations of motion of the bosonic chiral string (also known as Hohm-Siegel-Zwiebach model), with the spin-two ghost fields integrated out. This is the first instance of a world sheet model in which all corrections are fully determined in a generic curved spacetime. As a concrete cross-check, we find complete agreement between all three-point and a sample of four-point tree-level scattering amplitudes computed using field theory methods and the chiral string prescription. Abelian-Higgs cosmic strings: effective action and particle radiation

Abstract:We utilized the duality between massive vector and massive Kalb-Ramond fields to derive an effective action for Abelian-Higgs cosmic strings. This enabled us to determine the classically renormalized string tension and facilitate calculations for back-reaction effects. Additionally, we derived a comprehensive expression for the energy flux of radiation emitted by Abelian-Higgs cosmic strings. Applying this equation to a cuspless loop, we obtained that the loop lifetime is proportional to the square of the loop length, which is in agreement with field-theory simulations.

Strings as Hyper-Fractons

Abstract:We systematically examine all possible Gauss laws obeying spatial rotation symmetry, characterising the corresponding conserved charges. In the case of conserved higher moments, this gives rise to fractonic behaviour. We show that many Gauss laws, including those arising from $p$-form electrodynamics, in fact, produce an infinite tower of conserved moments, which we dub hyper-fractonic. In hyper-fractonic systems, a finite number of charged particles cannot be mobile due to an inability of fulfilling the infinite number of conservation laws with a finite number of degrees of freedom. Instead, mobile charged objects must have an infinite number of degrees of freedom. In particular, the strings and branes naturally coupling to $p$-form potentials provide an example of hyper-fractonic matter.

Abstract:The discovery of collective effects in small collision systems, have spurred a renewed interest in hadronization models, also as a source for collective effects all the way to large collision systems, where they are usually ascribed to the creation of a Quark--Gluon Plasma. In this topical mini-review, the microscopic model for string interactions, based on the Lund string hadronization model, developed with exactly this aim is reviewed, and some prospects for the future presented.

Abstract:The Brownian motion of a number of quantum states in a compact one-dimensional space is studied via the Wiener fractal measure, and it is shown that the derived path-integral measure coincides precisely with the Polyakov path-integral formula for bosonic string theory. Thus, it is concluded that the Polyakov action of bosonic string theory does not have a unique, distinguishable foundation specifically dedicated to describing the fundamental forces of nature, but rather, it is merely a standard formulation of the Wiener stochastic process for Brownian motion of the quantum states on one-dimensional objects. It is also demonstrated that the time-dimension field is, in practice, the localization of the non-local effects of the coordinate fields. This indicates that the interpretation intended for spacetime fields in the formulation of string theory allegedly faces fundamental flaws in its underlying theoretical aspects. In this regard, we will defend string theory against its experimental flaws in particle physics due to unreliable interpretation of the theory and relate its elaborated mathematical framework to another significant topic: Quantum Brain. ....
