Abstract:We compute the gravitational radiation-reaction force on a compact binary source at the fourth-and-a-half post-Newtonian (4.5PN) order of general relativity, i.e., 2PN order beyond the leading 2.5PN radiation reaction. The calculation is valid for general orbits in a general frame, but in a particular coordinate system which is an extension of the Burke-Thorne coordinate system at the lowest order. With the radiation-reaction acceleration, we derive (from first principles) the flux-balance laws associated with the energy, the angular and linear momenta, and the center-of-mass position, in a general frame and up to 4.5PN order. Restricting our attention to the frame of the center of mass, we point out that the equations of motion acquire a non-local-in-time contribution at the 4.5PN order, made of the integrated flux of linear momentum (responsible for the recoil of the source) together with the instantaneous flux of center-of-mass position. The non-local contribution was overlooked in the past literature, which assumed locality of the radiation-reaction force in the center of mass frame at 4.5PN order. We discuss the consequences of this non-local effect and obtain consistent non-local equations of motion and flux balance laws at 4.5PN order in the center-of-mass frame.

Abstract:We revisit the problem of flux-balance equations for isolated post-Newtonian matter systems due tothe emission of gravitational waves. In particular we show by a local derivation confined to thesystem, using the expression of radiation-reaction forces up to the 3.5 PN order, that not only theenergy, angular momentum and linear momentum of the system, but also the position of its center ofmass, obey some (non-trivial) flux-balance equations. The balance equation for the center-of-massposition completes the description of the secular evolution by gravitational waves of relativisticpost-Newtonian isolated matter systems. Abstract:This article provides the details on the technical derivation of the gravitational waveform and total gravitational-wave energy flux of non-spinning compact binary systems to the 4PN (fourth post-Newtonian) order beyond the Einstein quadrupole formula. In particular: (i) we overview the link between the radiative multipole moments measured at infinity and the source moments in the framework of dimensional regularization; (ii) we compute special corrections to the source moments due to "infrared" commutators arising at the 4PN order; (iii) we derive a "post-adiabatic" correction needed to evaluate the tail integral with 2.5PN relative precision; (iv) we discuss the relation between the binary's orbital frequency in quasi-circular orbit and the gravitational-wave frequency measured at infinity; (v) we compute the hereditary effects at the 4PN order, including those coming from the recently derived tails-of-memory; and (vi) we describe the various tests we have performed to ensure the correctness of the results. Those results are collected in an ancillary file.

Gravitational waves from quasielliptic compact binaries in scalar-tensor theory to one-and-a-half post-Newtonian order

Abstract:The orbit-averaged fluxes of energy and angular momentum generated by a compact binary system of nonspinning particles are obtained in a popular class of massless scalar-tensor theories with first-and-a-half post-Newtonian (1.5PN) accuracy, i.e., 2.5PN accuracy beyond the leading -1PN dipolar radiation. The secular evolution of the orbital elements (frequency and eccentricity) are then also obtained with 1.5PN accuracy. Three technical advances were necessary to obtain these results: (i) the decomposition of the scalar dipole moment as a Fourier series at 1PN order, along with the other moments at Newtonian order, (ii) the derivation of the formula for the passage to the center-of-mass frame at 2.5PN, including a novel hereditary term arising from the contribution of the radiation, and (iii) the complete treatment of the memory-like term appearing in the angular momentum flux. Moreover, as a byproduct of this work, I revisit in the Appendix the treatment in general relativity of the memory integral appearing at 2.5PN order in the angular momentum flux [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0908.3854" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0908.3854">arXiv:0908.3854</a>], and find that the spurious divergence in the initial eccentricity $e_1$ found there is cured by a careful split between AC and DC terms.

Abstract:The precise knowledge of the gravitational phase evolution of compact binaries is crucial to the data analysis for gravitational waves. Until recently, it was known analytically (for non-spinning systems) up to the 3.5 post-Newtonian (PN) order, i.e. up to the $(v/c)^7$ correction beyond the leading order quadrupole formula. Using a PN-multipolar-post-Minkowskian algorithm, we have pushed the accuracy to the next 4PN level. This derivation involved challenging technical issues, due to the appearance of non-physical divergences, which have to be properly regularized, as well as effects of non-linear multipole interactions.

Abstract:We review recent theoretical progress in the so-called self-force problem of a general relativistic two-body system. Although a two-body system in Newtonian gravity is a very simple problem, some fundamental issues are involved in relativistic gravity. Besides, because of recent projects for gravitational wave detection, it has become possible to see those phenomena directly via gravitational waves, and the self-force problem becomes one of urgent and highly-motivated problems in general relativity. Roughly speaking, there are two approaches to investigate this problem; the so-called post-Newtonian approximation, and a black-hole perturbation. In this paper, we review theoretical progress in the self-force problem using a black-hole perturbation. Although the self-force problem seems to be just a problem to calculate a self-force, we discuss that the real problem is to define a gauge-invariant concept of a motion in a gauge-dependent metric perturbation.

Gravitational Bremsstrahlung Waveform at the fourth Post-Minkowskian order and the second Post-Newtonian level

Abstract:Using the Multipolar Post-Minkowskian formalism, we compute the frequency-domain waveform generated by the gravitational scattering of two nonspinning bodies at the fourth post-Minkowskian order ($O(G^4)$, or two-loop order), and at the fractional second Post-Newtonian accuracy ($O(v^4/c^4)$). The waveform is decomposed in spin-weighted spherical harmonics and the needed radiative multipoles, $U_{\ell m}(\omega), V_{\ell m}(\omega)$, are explicitly expressed in terms of a small number of master integrals. The basis of master integrals contains both (modified) Bessel functions, and solutions of inhomogeneous Bessel equations with Bessel-function sources. We show how to express the latter in terms of Meijer G functions. The low-frequency expansion of our results is checked againg existing classical soft theorems. We also complete our previous results on the $O(G^2)$ bremsstrahlung waveform by computing the $O(G^3)$ spectral densities of radiated energy and momentum, in the rest frame of one body, at the thirtieth order in velocity.

Abstract:The linear- and quadratic-in-spin contributions to the binding potential and gravitational-wave flux from binary systems are derived to next-to-next-to-leading order in the Post-Newtonian (PN) expansion of general relativity, including finite-size and tail effects. The calculation is carried out through the worldline effective field theory framework. We find agreement in the overlap with the available PN literature and test-body limit. As a direct application, we complete the knowledge of spin effects in the evolution of the orbital phase for aligned-spin circular orbits to fourth PN order. We estimate the impact of the new results in the number of accumulated gravitational-wave cycles. We find they will play an important role in providing reliable physical interpretation of gravitational-wave signals from spinning binaries with future detectors such as LISA and the Einstein Telescope.

Abstract:We discuss subtle points of the momentum balance for radiating particles in flat and curved space-time. An instantaneous balance is obscured by the presence of the Schott term which is a finite part of the bound field momentum. To establish the balance one has to take into account the initial and final conditions for acceleration, or to apply averaging. In curved space-time an additional contribution arises from the tidal deformation of the bound field. This force is shown to be the finite remnant from the mass renormalization and it is different both form the radiation recoil force and the Schott force. For radiation of non-gravitational nature from point particles in curved space-time the reaction force can be computed substituting the retarded field directly to the equations of motion. Similar procedure is applicable to gravitational radiation in vacuum space-time, but fails in the non-vacuum case. The existence of the gravitational quasilocal reaction force in this general case seems implausible, though it still exists in the non-relativistic approximation. We also explain the putative antidamping effect for gravitational radiation under non-geodesic motion and derive the non-relativistic gravitational quadrupole Schott term. Radiation reaction in curved space of dimension other than four is also discussed

Abstract:We determine the adiabatic tidal contributions to the radiation reacted momentum impulse Δpiμ and scattering angle θ between two scattered massive bodies (neutron stars) at next-to-next-to-leading post-Minkowskian order. The state-of-the-art three-loop (fourth post-Mikowskian order) worldline quantum field theory toolkit using dimensional regularization is employed to establish the classical observables. We encounter divergent terms in the gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic quadrupolar sectors necessitating the addition of postadiabatic counterterms in this classical theory. This leads us to include also the leading postadiabatic tidal contributions to the observables. Abstract:Using the AGT correspondence and localization, we derive a combinatorial formula for the Post-Newtonian expansion of the wave form describing the gravitational emission from binary systems made of objects of extremely different masses. The results are written as a double instanton series describing the expansion of the gravitational wave at large distances and small velocities, and are tested against previous formulae in the literature for Schwarschild and Kerr black holes at the 5th and 3rd Post Newtonian order respectively beyond the quadrupole approximation. Tidal effects show up in the wave form at the 5th PN order, providing a quantitative measure of sizes and reflectivity properties of the gravity solution.

Abstract:The worldlines (in harmonic coordinates) of two gravitationally interacting massive bodies at the second post-Minkowskian order are described in explicit form. Both the conservative case and the radiation-reacted case are considered. We use our results to check the changes, during scattering, of the individual momenta, as well as of the total angular momentum. High post-Newtonian order values of the $O(G^2)$ radiation-reaction acceleration components are provided for checks of future post-Newtonian computations.

Testing eccentric corrections to the radiation-reaction force in the test-mass limit of effective-one-body models

Abstract:In this work, we test an effective-one-body radiation-reaction force for eccentric planar orbits of a test mass in a Kerr background, which contains third-order post-Newtonian (PN) non-spinning and second-order PN spin contributions. We compare the analytical fluxes connected to two different resummations of this force, truncated at different PN orders in the eccentric sector, with the numerical fluxes computed through the use of frequency- and time-domain Teukolsky-equation codes. We find that the different PN truncations of the radiation-reaction force show the expected scaling in the weak gravitational-field regime, and we observe a fractional difference with the numerical fluxes that is $<5 \%$, for orbits characterized by eccentricity $0 \le e \le 0.7$, central black-hole spin $-0.99 M \le a \le 0.99 M$ and fixed orbital-averaged quantity $x=\langle M\Omega \rangle^{2/3} = 0.06$, corresponding to the mildly strong-field regime with semilatera recta $9 M<p<17 M$. Our analysis provides useful information for the development of spin-aligned eccentric models in the comparable-mass case.

Abstract:(Abridged) Following particle trajectories in the intense electromagnetic field of a neutron star is prohibited by the large ratio between the cyclotron frequency $\omega_{\rm B}$ and the stellar rotation frequency $\Omega$. No fully kinetic simulations on a macroscopic scale and with realistic field strengths have been performed so far due to the huge computational cost implied by this enormous scale of separation. In this paper, we derive new expressions for the particle velocity subject to strong radiation reaction that are intended to be more accurate than the current state-of-the-art expression in the radiation reaction limit regime, the so-called Aristotelian regime. We shortened the timescale hierarchy by solving the particle equation of motion in the radiation reaction regime, where the Lorentz force is always and immediately balanced by the radiative drag, and including a friction not necessarily opposite to the velocity vector, as derived in the Landau-Lifshitz approximation. Starting from the reduced Landau-Lifshitz equation (i.e. neglecting the field time derivatives), we found expressions for the velocity depending only on the local electromagnetic field configuration and on a new parameter related to the field strength that controls the strength of the radiative damping. The new velocity expressions produce results similar in accuracy to the radiation reaction limit approximation. We therefore do not expect this new method to improve the accuracy of neutron star magnetosphere simulations. The radiation reaction limit is a simple but accurate, robust, and efficient way to follow ultra-relativistic particles in a strong electromagnetic field.
