Abstract:The precise knowledge of the gravitational phase evolution of compact binaries is crucial to the data analysis for gravitational waves. Until recently, it was known analytically (for non-spinning systems) up to the 3.5 post-Newtonian (PN) order, i.e. up to the $(v/c)^7$ correction beyond the leading order quadrupole formula. Using a PN-multipolar-post-Minkowskian algorithm, we have pushed the accuracy to the next 4PN level. This derivation involved challenging technical issues, due to the appearance of non-physical divergences, which have to be properly regularized, as well as effects of non-linear multipole interactions.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The aim of this paper is to address the precise calculation of the gravitational wave phase evolution in binary compact object systems (such as binary neutron star systems) at the fourth post-Newtonian order (4PN). This research is crucial for the data analysis of gravitational wave detectors, especially during the long precession phase observed in the merger process of binary systems. Specifically, the researchers advanced the precision to the 4PN level through a post-Newtonian multipole post-Minkowskian algorithm. This process encountered several technical challenges, such as the need for appropriate regularization of non-physical divergence phenomena and the impact of nonlinear multipole interactions. Since the current LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA network primarily observes neutron star binary systems, which, although rare, contain important scientific information, precise waveform modeling is essential for extracting this information. Moreover, future detectors (such as LISA or ET) are expected to observe a large number of long precession signals, making the establishment of high-precision analytical waveform templates a key goal for gravitational wave astronomy. This paper details how to calculate the gravitational wave phase to an accuracy of 4.5PN, i.e., a correction relative to the leading-order formula of (v/c)^9. Since detectors are more sensitive to phase than amplitude, the focus of the research is on the calculation of the phase ψ. To achieve this goal, the research team utilized the energy flux balance equation and resolved various divergence issues encountered during the calculation process, ultimately obtaining the gravitational wave flux expression at the 4PN order and verifying the correctness and consistency of the results through multiple tests.
