Abstract:The basic idea of baryogenesis is lectured to introduce non-experts to this subject. Some recent topics, necessarily subjective in view of short time limitation, are also presented to show how the initial condition for baryogenesis is realized in the new framework of inflation.

Abstract:R2 -Higgs inflation stands out as one of the best-fit models of Planck data. Using a covariant formalism for the inflationary dynamics and the production of helical gauge fields, we show that the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) can be obtained when this model is supplemented by a dimension-six CP -violating term ∼(R/Λ2)BμνB ̃μν in the hypercharge sector. At linear order, values of Λ≃2.5×10−5 MP produce, in the R2 -like regime, sufficient helical hypermagnetic fields to create the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry during the electroweak crossover. However, the Schwinger effect of fermion pair production can play a critical role in this context, and that scale is significantly lowered when the backreaction of the fermion fields on the gauge field production is included. In all cases, the helical field configurations can remain robust against washout after the end of inflation. Evolution of the Mass Function of Dark Matter Haloes

Abstract:We use a high resolution $\Lambda$CDM numerical simulation to calculate the mass function of dark matter haloes down to the scale of dwarf galaxies, back to a redshift of fifteen, in a 50 $h^{-1}$Mpc volume containing 80 million particles. Our low redshift results allow us to probe low $\sigma$ density fluctuations significantly beyond the range of previous cosmological simulations. The Sheth and Tormen mass function provides an excellent match to all of our data except for redshifts of ten and higher, where it overpredicts halo numbers increasingly with redshift, reaching roughly 50 percent for the $10^{10}-10^{11} \msun$ haloes sampled at redshift 15. Our results confirm previous findings that the simulated halo mass function can be described solely by the variance of the mass distribution, and thus has no explicit redshift dependence. We provide an empirical fit to our data that corrects for the overprediction of extremely rare objects by the Sheth and Tormen mass function. This overprediction has implications for studies that use the number densities of similarly rare objects as cosmological probes. For example, the number density of high redshift (z $\simeq$ 6) QSOs, which are thought to be hosted by haloes at 5$\sigma$ peaks in the fluctuation field, are likely to be overpredicted by at least a factor of 50%. We test the sensitivity of our results to force accuracy, starting redshift, and halo finding algorithm.

Abstract:A bstract The ultra-slow-roll (USR) inflation represents a class of single-field models with sharp deceleration of the rolling dynamics on small scales, leading to a significantly enhanced power spectrum of the curvature perturbations and primordial black hole (PBH) formation. Such a sharp transition of the inflationary background can trigger the coherent motion of scalar condensates with effective potentials governed by the rolling rate of the inflaton field. We show that a scalar condensate carrying (a combination of) baryon or lepton number can achieve successful baryogenesis through the Affleck-Dine mechanism from unconventional initial conditions excited by the USR transition. Viable parameter space for creating the correct baryon asymmetry of the Universe naturally incorporates the specific limit for PBHs to contribute significantly to dark matter, shedding light on the cosmic coincidence problem between the baryon and dark matter densities today.

Abstract:If the inflaton field is coupled to the hypercharge Chern-Simons density $F\tilde F$, an explosive production of helical gauge fields when inflation ends can trigger baryogenesis at the electroweak phase transition. Besides, Higgs inflation identifies the inflaton with the Higgs field $\mathcal H$, thus relating cosmological observables to properties of electroweak physics. In this paper we merge both approaches: the helical gauge fields are produced at the end of Higgs inflation from the coupling $|\mathcal H|^2 F\tilde F$. In the metric formulation of gravity we found a window in the parameter space for electroweak baryogenesis consistent with all experimental observations. Conversely, for the Palatini formalism the non-gaussianity bounds strongly constrain the helicity produced at the end of inflation, forbidding an efficient baryogenesis.

Abstract:We study the conditions for successful Affleck-Dine baryogenesis in generic inflation and supergravity scenarios, finding powerful restrictions on them. String-based SUGRA models are especially interesting since they are surprisingly suitable for the implementation not only of AD baryogenesis but also inflation itself, presenting a nice solution to the $\eta$--problem.

Abstract:We show that a baryon asymmetry can be generated by dissipative effects during warm inflation via a supersymmetric two-stage mechanism, where the inflaton is coupled to heavy mediator fields that then decay into light species through B- and CP-violating interactions. In contrast with thermal GUT baryogenesis models, the temperature during inflation is always below the heavy mass threshold, simultaneously suppressing thermal and quantum corrections to the inflaton potential and the production of dangerous GUT relics. This naturally gives a small baryon asymmetry close to the observed value, although parametrically larger values may be diluted after inflation along with any gravitino overabundance. Furthermore, this process yields baryon isocurvature perturbations within the range of future experiments, making this an attractive and testable model of GUT baryogenesis.

Abstract:In this talk recent developments of the theory of preheating after inflation are briefly reviewed. In inflationary cosmology, the particles constituting the Universe are created after inflation due to their interaction with moving inflaton field(s) in the process of reheating. In inflationary models motivated by supergravity, both bosons and fermions are created. In the bosonic sector, the leading channel of particle production is the non-perturbative regime of parametric resonance dominated by those bosons which are created exponentially fast with the largest characteristic exponent. In the fermionic sector, the leading channel corresponds to the regime of parametric excitation of fermions, which respects Pauli blocking but differs significantly from the perturbative expectation. In supergravity we also have to consider production of gravitinos and moduli fields, which are cosmologically dangerous relics. We discuss the derivation of the gravitino equations in curved space-time with moving background scalars. We describe recent results on the production of gravitinos from preheating, which may put strong constraints on the inflationary models.

Abstract:We present a model of inflation based on the interaction between a homogeneous and isotropic configuration of a U(1) gauge field and fermionic charge density J(0). The regulated fermionic charge density is generated from a Bunch-Davies vacuum state using the methods of Koksma and Prokopec [11], and is found to redshift as 1/a(eta). The time-like component of gauge field is sourced by the fermionic charge leading to a growth in the gauge field A(eta)(0) similar to a(eta). As a result inflation is dominated by the energy density contained in the gauge field and fermionic charge interaction, A(0)J(0), which remains constant during inflation. We also provide a mechanism to generate a net lepton asymmetry. The coupling of a pseudo scalar to the Chern-Simons term converts the gauge field fluctuations into lepton number and all three Sahkarov conditions are satisfied during inflation. Finally, the rapid oscillation of the pseudo scalar field near its minimum thermalizes the gauge field and ends inflation. We provide the necessary initial condition on the gauge field and fermionic charge to simultaneously generate enough e-folds and baryon asymmetry index.

Abstract:In models with the fundamental gravity scale in the TeV range, early cosmology is quite different from the standard picture, because the universe must have arisen at a much lower temperature and the electroweak symmetry was probably never restored. In this context, baryogenesis appears to be problematic: if the involved physics is essentially that of the Standard Model, ``conventional'' non-conserving baryon number processes are completely negligible at such low temperatures. In this paper we show that the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe may be generated by gravitational decay of TeV-mass particles: such objects can be out of equilibrium after inflation and, if their mass is of the same order of magnitude as the true quantum gravity scale, they can quickly decay through a black hole intermediate state, violating global symmetries, in particular, baryon number. In this context, we take advantage of the fact that the ``Sakharov conditions'' for baryogenesis can be more easily satisfied with a low fundamental scale of gravity.
Non-thermal baryogenesis from MSSM flat direction

Abstract:We study an inflection point inflation scenario where a flat direction of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) is identified with the inflaton. We focus on the case where the flat direction (inflaton) has non-zero baryon number, and consider a non-thermal baryogenesis scenario where the decay of the inflaton at the reheating directly generates baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Specifically, we consider a udd flat direction that is lifted by a superpotential operator of dimension 6, and show that inflection point inflation with the udd flat direction can be compatible with cosmological observations and can account for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe.

Unified Origin of Inflation, Baryon Asymmetry, and Neutrino Mass

Abstract:In this work, we present a unified theoretical framework that simultaneously addresses some of the most intriguing puzzles in particle physics and cosmology, namely the origins of neutrino mass, baryon asymmetry, and cosmic inflation. In our model, inflation is driven by a combination of the Standard Model Higgs, the type II seesaw Higgs responsible for neutrino mass generation, and the unified symmetry-breaking Higgs field. During inflation, non-zero values of the latter field ensure the absence of the monopole problem. The baryon asymmetry is generated through the Affleck-Dine mechanism, facilitated by the non-zero angular motion in the phase of a complex scalar field, which is part of the inflaton. We find that the successful parameter region for generating baryon asymmetry through a renormalizable term in the scalar potential requires a rather heavy type II seesaw triplet, with a mass well beyond the TeV scale. Inflationary observables, in particular, the spectral index is in excellent agree with experimental observation, whereas tensor-to scalar ratio is expected to be probed by the future LiteBIRD and CMB-S4 missions.

Reheating process in the $R^2$ inflationary model with the baryogenesis scenario

Abstract:Post-inflationary evolution and (re)heating of the viable inflationary model, the $R^2$ one, is made more realistic by including the leptogenesis scenario into it. For this purpose, right-handed Majorana neutrinos with a large mass are added to the matter sector of the Standard Model to explain the neutrino oscillation experiments and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We have found parameters that characterize this model: non-minimal coupling of the Higgs field $\xi$, the mass of the right-handed Majorana neutrino $M_{N_\alpha}$ and the Yukawa coupling matrix components for the right-handed Majorana neutrino. We have analyzed the effect of these parameters on the reheating process and leptogenesis in this model and how they affect the resultant physical quantities: spectral parameters of primordial perturbations and baryon asymmetry.

Abstract:These lecture notes have been written for a short introductory course on the status of inflation after Planck and BICEP2, given at the Xth Modave School of Mathematical Physics. The first objective is to give an overview of the theory of inflation: motivations, homogeneous scalar field dynamics, slow-roll approximation, linear theory of cosmological perturbations, classification of single field potentials and their observable predictions. This includes a pedagogical derivation of the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra for any effective single field potential. The second goal is to present the most recent results of Planck and BICEP2 and to discuss their implications for inflation. Bayesian statistical methods are introduced as a tool for model analysis and comparison. Based on the recent work of J. Martin et al., the best inflationary models after Planck and BICEP2 are presented. Finally a series of open questions and issues related to inflation are mentioned and briefly discussed.

Abstract:I describe a new way for baryogenesis to proceed, which evades many of the problems of GUT and electroweak scenarios. If the reheat temperature after inflation is below the electroweak scale, neither GUT baryon production nor traditional electroweak baryogenesis can occur. However, non-thermal production of sphaleron configurations via preheating could generate the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe. Such low scale baryon production is particularly attractive since it evades a number of strong constraints on reheating from gravitino and moduli production.
