Abstract:In this review article, we revisit the topic of baryogenesis, which is the physical process that generated the observed baryon asymmetry during the first stages of the primordial Universe. A viable theoretical explanation to understand and investigate the mechanisms underlying baryogenesis must always ensure that the Sakharov criteria are fulfilled. These essentially state the following: (i) baryon number violation; (ii) the violation of both C (charge conjugation symmetry) and CP (the composition of parity and C); (iii) and the departure from equilibrium. Throughout the years, various mechanisms have been proposed to address this issue, and here we review two of the most important, namely, electroweak baryogenesis (EWB) and Grand Unification Theories (GUTs) baryogenesis. Furthermore, we briefly explore how a change in the theory of gravity affects the EWB and GUT baryogenesis by considering Scalar--Tensor Theories (STT), where the inclusion of a scalar field mediates the gravitational interaction, in addition to the metric tensor field. We consider specific STT toy models and show that a modification of the underlying gravitational theory implies a change in the time--temperature relation of the evolving cosmological model, thus altering the conditions that govern the interplay between the rates of the interactions generating baryon asymmetry, and the expansion rate of the Universe. Therefore, the equilibrium of the former does not exactly occur as in the general relativistic standard model, and there are consequences for the baryogenesis mechanisms that have been devised. This is representative of the type of modifications of the baryogenesis processes that are to be found when considering extended theories of gravity.

Abstract:These lectures provide a pedagogical review of the present status of theories explaining the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Particular emphasis is given on GUT baryogenesis and electroweak baryogenesis. The key issues, the unresolved problems and the very recent developments, such as GUT baryogenesis during preheating, are explained. Some exercises (and their solution) are also provided.

Baryogenesis from a Majorana Fermion Coupled to Quarks

Abstract:In the theory with a Majorana fermion ($X$) coupled to quark-like fermions ($Q$) via a dimension-six four-fermion vector-vector interaction, we have computed in an earlier work the baryon asymmetry generated in the decay and scattering processes of the $X$ with $Q$. In this work we consider such processes in the expanding early Universe, set up the Boltzmann equations governing the $X$ and net baryon number densities, and numerically solve them in example benchmark points, taking the thermally averaged decay and scattering rates and their temperature dependence from the earlier study. We find that starting from a baryon symmetric Universe at early time, the presently observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) can be explained in this theory over a wide range of mass scales, $M_\chi\in (10^4,10^{16})$~GeV for appropriately chosen couplings. We find that scattering processes play a crucial role in generating the baryon asymmetry in this theory. We present our results in a general manner that should be useful not just in our theory, but also in other related theories that share the essential ingredients. Our results should help guide promising ways to probe such new physics in terrestrial experiments.

Abstract:We describe how difficult it is to realise baryogenesis in models where the fundamental scale in nature is as low as TeV. The problem becomes even more challenging if we assume that there are only {\it two} extra compact spatial dimensions, because thermal history of such a Universe is strongly constrained by various cosmological and astrophysical bounds which translate the maximal temperature of the Universe which must not exceed $\sim {\cal O}(10)$MeV. This simply reiterates that the observed baryon asymmetry must be synthesised just above the nucleosynthesis scale. In this talk we address how to construct a simple model which can overcome this challenge.

Abstract:A talk was given on the baryon asymmetry of our universe within the electroweak energy scale which was the theme for the 23rd INS Symposium. It was intended for non-experts by a non-expert speaker. A model is analized explicitly in which the lepton number produced from the bubble walls is converted afterwards to the baryon asymmetry.Phase transition dynamics is simulated, including the temporal develpment and the fusion effect of the nucleated bubbles.

Abstract:We investigate the generation of the baryon asymmetry within the framework of cosmological gravitational particle production, employing the Bogoliubov approach. We examine two well-known baryogenesis scenarios, namely baryogenesis in grand unified theories (GUT) and leptogenesis, while considering reheating temperatures sufficiently low for thermal processes to be negligible. Considering α –attractor T-models for the inflaton potential, we demonstrate that GUT baryogenesis from scalar decays can be successful across a large range of conformal couplings with gravity, without necessitating substantial levels of CP violation. Abstract:In models with the fundamental gravity scale in the TeV range, early cosmology is quite different from the standard picture, because the universe must have arisen at a much lower temperature and the electroweak symmetry was probably never restored. In this context, baryogenesis appears to be problematic: if the involved physics is essentially that of the Standard Model, ``conventional'' non-conserving baryon number processes are completely negligible at such low temperatures. In this paper we show that the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe may be generated by gravitational decay of TeV-mass particles: such objects can be out of equilibrium after inflation and, if their mass is of the same order of magnitude as the true quantum gravity scale, they can quickly decay through a black hole intermediate state, violating global symmetries, in particular, baryon number. In this context, we take advantage of the fact that the ``Sakharov conditions'' for baryogenesis can be more easily satisfied with a low fundamental scale of gravity.

Abstract:We propose a new mechanism of baryogenesis which proceeds via a CP-violating phase transition. During this phase transition, the coupling of the Weinberg operator is dynamically realised and subsequently a lepton asymmetry is generated via the non-zero interference of this operator at different times. This new scenario of leptogenesis provides a direct connection between the baryon asymmetry, low energy neutrino parameters and leptonic flavour models.

Abstract:In supergravity models (such as standard superstring constructions) that possess a Heisenberg symmetry, supersymmetry breaking by the inflationary vacuum energy does not lift flat directions at tree level. One-loop corrections give small squared masses that are negative (about -g^2 H^2/(4\pi)^2) for all flat directions that do not involve the stop. After inflation, these flat directions generate a large baryon asymmetry; typically $n_B/s \sim$ O(1). We consider mechanisms for suppressing this asymmetry to the observed level. These include dilution from inflaton or moduli decay, GUT nonflatness of the $vev$ direction, and higher dimensional operators in both GUT models and the MSSM. We find that the observed BAU can easily be generated when one or more of these effects is present.

Abstract:A bstract The ultra-slow-roll (USR) inflation represents a class of single-field models with sharp deceleration of the rolling dynamics on small scales, leading to a significantly enhanced power spectrum of the curvature perturbations and primordial black hole (PBH) formation. Such a sharp transition of the inflationary background can trigger the coherent motion of scalar condensates with effective potentials governed by the rolling rate of the inflaton field. We show that a scalar condensate carrying (a combination of) baryon or lepton number can achieve successful baryogenesis through the Affleck-Dine mechanism from unconventional initial conditions excited by the USR transition. Viable parameter space for creating the correct baryon asymmetry of the Universe naturally incorporates the specific limit for PBHs to contribute significantly to dark matter, shedding light on the cosmic coincidence problem between the baryon and dark matter densities today.

Abstract:We propose a framework of baryogenesis and leptogenesis that relies on a supercooled confining phase transition (PT) in the early universe. The baryon or lepton asymmetry is sourced by decays of hadrons of the strong dynamics after the PT, and it is enhanced compared to the non-confining case, which was the only one explored so far. This widens the energy range of the PT, where the observed baryon asymmetry can be reproduced, down to the electroweak scale. The framework then becomes testable with gravity waves (GW) at LISA and the Einstein Telescope. We then study two explicit realisations: one of leptogenesis from composite sterile neutrinos that realises inverse see-saw; one of baryogenesis from composite scalars that is partly testable by existing colliders and flavour factories.

Abstract:We propose a new alternative for baryogenesis which resolves a number of the problems associated with GUT and electroweak scenarios, and which may allow baryogenesis even in modest extensions of the standard model. If the universe never reheats above the electroweak scale following inflation, GUT baryon production does not occur and at the same time thermal sphalerons, gravitinos and monopoles are not produced in abundance. Nevertheless, non-thermal production of sphaleron configurations via preheating could generate the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe.

Abstract:We show that a baryon asymmetry can be generated by dissipative effects during warm inflation via a supersymmetric two-stage mechanism, where the inflaton is coupled to heavy mediator fields that then decay into light species through B- and CP-violating interactions. In contrast with thermal GUT baryogenesis models, the temperature during inflation is always below the heavy mass threshold, simultaneously suppressing thermal and quantum corrections to the inflaton potential and the production of dangerous GUT relics. This naturally gives a small baryon asymmetry close to the observed value, although parametrically larger values may be diluted after inflation along with any gravitino overabundance. Furthermore, this process yields baryon isocurvature perturbations within the range of future experiments, making this an attractive and testable model of GUT baryogenesis.

Abstract:We propose a scenario that generates the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe through a multistep phase transition in which SU(3) color symmetry is first broken and then restored. A spontaneous violation of B - L conservation leads to a contribution to the baryon asymmetry that becomes negligible in the final phase. The baryon asymmetry is therefore produced exclusively through the electroweak mechanism in the intermediate phase. We illustrate this scenario with a simple model that reproduces the observed baryon asymmetry. We discuss how future electric dipole moment and collider searches may probe this scenario, though future electric dipole moment searches would require an improved sensitivity of several orders of magnitude.
On the Role of Cosmological Gravitational Particle Production in Baryogenesis

Abstract:We investigate the feasibility of directly detecting a generation mechanism of the cosmic baryon asymmetry, by repeating the same particle physics process inside the LHC. We propose a framework with R-parity and CP violating squark decays responsible for baryogenesis, which can be embedded in supersymmetric models and is partly motivated by naturalness. We argue that the baryon number generation here is closely related to lepton charge asymmetry on the resonance. We emphasize the importance of the single charged lepton plus multijet channel in the absence of significant missing energy in search of such a scenario.

Abstract:We explore the possibility that the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe is the result of an earlier phase transition in which an extended gauge sector breaks down into the SU(3)(C)xSU(2)(L)xU(1)(Y) of the standard model. Our proto-typical example is the topflavor model, in which there is a separate SU(2)(1) for the third generation from the SU(2)(2) felt by the first two generations. We show that the breakdown of SU(2)(1)xSU(2)(2)-> SU(2)(L) results in lepton number being asymmetrically distributed throughout the three families, and provided the SM electroweak phase transition is not strongly first order, results in a nonzero baryon number, which for parameter choices that can be explored at the LHC may explain the observed baryon asymmetry.
