Abstract:This paper makes a research into the simulation experimental teaching method for the course on communication principles on the basis of SystemView software. Taking the 2PSK frequency-band transmission system model as an example, this paper carefully re-searches the design of simulation experiment and adjusts the experimental teaching process and methods. The experiment results show that the simulation technology can help students understand the abstract knowledge, improve the students' initiative, inspire the students' inter-est, develop the students' ability to apply their knowledge solve problems, which improves the teaching efficiency of the course on commu-nication principles.

Abstract:Teach system is widely used in welding robot,Users control robot to weld by Teach system.So,the practicability of welding robot depends on function and interface of teach system.Design and realization of Software of teach system which based on the real-time KernelμC/OS-Ⅱ is introduced.The system includes operating system、GUI interface and network communication.It first introduces the main modules,then functional planning and development of teaching box,and design of interface based on GUI is dealt with.At last,realization of the communication between the teaching system and the host controller based on LwIP are specified in detail.Now,development and test has been done,industrialization is carried on.After test and preliminary use of the system,it was proved that the teach system had characteristics of nice interface,comprehensive functions,practicability,and it can satisfy expected requirements of industry.

Abstract:Process Control Engineering is a very practical course and the main contents are control system analysis,design and application.To stimulate learning enthusiasm of students and deepen their understanding of the contents of teaching,the independent design and integrated simulation teaching method is employed.Several typical process control problems are given,and each student must select one problem and solve it independently.Students need to build models,design and simulate control strategies,and write research reports.Finally,guided by the teacher,the classroom discussion is carried out.This teaching method can greatly upgrade the student's ability in identifying,analyzing and solving problems.

Abstract:In recent years, computer technology has developed rapidly especially the reconfigurable computing devices and related technology. This makes the related computer courses are confronted with an enormous challenge. With great importance attached to cultivating students' system ability, this paper makes teaching researches using EDA technologies through application of both software and hardware then apply them to the actual teaching practice. The courses are organized as the course group which can be extended through adding related courses for aimed major. And at the same time we have established a systematic and progressive experiment system. Consequently, students can deepen their understanding of the computer system, improve their ability to address practical problems and thus develop their over-all ability.

For example, understanding of the students' ideas, how can students learn more, diversified homework, the establishment of classroom atmosphere for effective teaching, appropriate discussion and participation, etc. Through students learning-centered teaching, we hope to enhance the students' initiative to participate in active learning, improve the quality of teaching effectively and let the students lay the foundation for self-study and follow-up learning.
A Problem-Based Learning Approach to Teaching Design in CS1

Abstract:Design skills are increasingly recognized as a core competency for software professionals. Unfortunately, these skills are difficult to teach because design requires freedom and open-ended thinking, but new designers require a structured process to keep them from being overwhelmed by possibilities. We scaffolded this by creating worksheets for every Design Thinking step, and embedding them in a PowerPoint deck on which students can collaborate. We present our experience teaching a team design project course to 200 first-year-university students, taking them from user interviews to functional prototypes. To challenge and support every student in a class where high school programming experience ranged from zero hours to three computer science courses, we gave teams the option of developing single-user or multi-user (distributed) web applications, using two Event-Driven Programming frameworks. We identified common failure modes from previous years, and developed the scaffolded approach and problem definition to avoid them. The techniques developed include using a "game matrix" for structured brainstorming and developing projects that require students to empathize with users very different from themselves. We present quantitative and qualitative evidence from surveys and focus groups that show how these strategies impacted learning, and the extent to which students' awareness of the strategies led to the development of metacognitive abilities.

Abstract:Whether in chemical, civil, mechanical, electrical, or their related engineering subdisciplines, remaining up-to-date in the subject matter is crucial. However, due to the pace of technological evolution, information and communications technology (ICT) fields of study are impacted with much higher consequences. Meanwhile, the curricula of higher educational institutes are struggling to catch up to this reality. In order to remain competitive, engineering schools ought to offer ICT related courses that are at once modern, relevant and ultimately beneficial for the employability of their graduates. In this spirit, we were recently mandated by our engineering school to develop and design telecommunication courses with great emphasis on (i) technological modernity, and (ii) experiential learning. To accomplish these objectives, we utilized the conceive, design, implement and operate (CDIO) framework, a modern engineering education initiative of which Sheridan is a member. In this article, we chronicle the steps we took to streamline and modernize the curriculum by outlining an effective methodology for course design and development with CDIO. We then provide examples of course update and design using the proposed methodology and highlight the lessons learned from this systematic curriculum development endeavor.
Design-based research: A framework for designing novel teaching and learning experiences in middle school engineering education

Abstract:This paper describes the use of design-based research methods in a National Science Foundation sponsored middle-school engineering education effort aimed at creating novel teaching and learning experiences. University experts and middle school teachers designed and implemented an engineering education program. The experiences were offered over a two-year period to 116 students organized into two cohorts in four middle schools as a year-round extracurricular program. The research question addressed is: “What are the characteristics of successful novel teaching and learning experiences for middle school students that use engineering-based project challenges?” The characteristics of the program were: multiple hands-on learning experiences so students discovered for themselves the means to solve the posed project challenge; deliberate use of the engineering design process in meeting each project challenge; use of learning cycle (engage, explore, explain, expand, evaluate) method for instructional planning; cognitive apprenticeships for learners with professional engineers and undergraduate engineering students; access to high quality technologies and tools necessary to meet the project challenge; the use of questioning strategies and learning facilitation techniques that promoted student centered learning experiences; and systematic refinement of learning experience facilitation through an iterative process. Using design-based research methods in the form of a cyclic process of theoretical reflections, conceptual analysis, small-scale curriculum development, and classroom research of the interaction of the novel teaching-learning processes, the project team arrived at a final set of characteristics for engineering-design based project challenges for middle school students.

Abstract:Designing mobile robots requires the integration of physical components, sensors, actuators, energy sources, embedded computing and decision algorithms into one system. Additional expertise is also beneficial when the desired robotic platform must fulfill a specific purpose in a real application. This paper describes three initiatives involving robot design projects following different educational approaches. Because mobile robotics is still an emerging technology with important challenges and opportunities for discoveries and applications, designing these systems as part of initiatives in engineering education allows developing proof-of-concept prototypes while providing a stimulating and motivating learning environrnent for engineering students.

Abstract:This teaching practice paper describes and reflects on the Engineering Observation, a multimodal communication assignment in a first-year engineering communication and design course. The assignment is designed to accomplish two major goals. First, it fills a pedagogical gap by establishing multimodality and engineering discourse as the foundations of communications instruction and practice in the course, while also establishing communication as an integral part of—and not separate from—design practice. Second, it helps solve problems stemming from the complexity and scale common to large design courses by contributing to the systematic stability of the course. This second goal depends on framing such a course as a system, from the “ecological perspective.” These dual goals are found to be inherently connected, and deliberate care has been given to ensure that they are aligned, mutually supportive, and as effective as possible while ensuring that the assignment supports, and does not negatively impact, connected aspects of the course. Finally, I assess the assignment in its current iteration and consider future directions for the assignment itself as well as this research.
Enhanced teaching and student learning through a simulator-based course in chemical unit operations design

Abstract:This paper illustrates a teaching technique used in computer applications in chemical engineering employed for designing various unit operation processes, where the students learn about unit operations by designing them. The aim of the course is not to teach design, but rather to teach the fundamentals and the function of unit operation processes through simulators. A case study presenting the teaching method was evaluated using student surveys and faculty assessments, which were designed to measure the quality and effectiveness of the teaching method. The results of the questionnaire conclusively demonstrate that this method is an extremely efficient way of teaching a simulator-based course. In addition to that, this teaching method can easily be generalised and used in other courses. A student's final mark is determined by a combination of in-class assessments conducted based on cooperative and peer learning, progress tests and a final exam. Results revealed that peer learning can improve the overall quality of student learning and enhance student understanding.

Abstract:According to the characteristics and contents of the course 'sensor technology and application',based on the current theoretical and experimental teaching,the teaching method of designing experiments on sensor circuits was proposed to strengthen the understanding of the use and design of sensors for undergraduates.The sensor circuit experimental platform was developed accordingly.The structure diagram is also presented.The course construction is illustrated from the aspects of the experimental subject,teaching content,progress management examination mode and teaching analysis.The course makes undergraduates as the center and teachers as the assistant,emphasizes sensor application and gives prominence to the practice.In association with the theoretical teaching,the course can stimulate undergraduates to perform the scientific practice by applying sensor technology.

Abstract:In the teaching of electronic engineering, some practical projects need to be added in order to connect various courses together. To strengthen the connections between courses, the project-based teaching method proposed in this paper advocates linking the knowledge of different courses through the combination of theory and practice. With this as a guide, projects have been set up for students. One of them is about designing and making a managed ethernet switch. In the process of making and completing this project, the students' ability has been significantly improved, which fully proves the benefits of the teaching method.

Abstract:This article describes materials and methods for a course in systems analysis and design. While the article is prescriptive rather than empirical, it offers new directions for instructors who wish to adopt an action research approach to syllabus development. Information systems developers perform two roles in the process of managing a development project: the developer is both analyst/designer and facilitator. Traditional textbooks for systems analysis and design courses emphasize the analyst/designer role, but say little about the facilitator role. We have developed course materials and teaching methods to address facilitation skills: outcome thinking, group process, and communications. We also emphasize some analyst/designer skills that are not addressed in the traditional texts, such as creative thinking. socio-technical systems, and CASE tool concepts. Our teaching methods include the personal journal, which allows students to tailor classroom materials to their own needs, as well as other methods for providing experiential learning of course materials.

Abstract:• The student-center method is designed to address the noticeable learning demands, interests, desires, or cultural backgrounds of individual students and groups of students.• This method includes a wide variety of educational programs, learning experience, educational techniques, and academic support procedures.• In this method, teachers, schools, guidance counselors, and other educational specialists apply different educational techniques such as modifying the educational strategies in the classroom and assignments.• One example of the educational strategy in the classroom is redesigning the way in which students are grouped and taught in a class.• The student-centered method can improve independent problem-solving skills.• In this method, which is based on the constructivist learning theory, the students are participated in choosing what they will learn and how their learning will be evaluated.• Applying this technique, especially in classes with a low number of students, provides an opportunity for the students to deeply analyze the conceptual and mathematical problems through mutual communications.

Abstract:Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a new technology that has received a substantial attention from several academic research fields in the last years. There are many applications of WSNs, including environmental monitoring, industrial automation, intelligent transportation systems, healthcare and wellbeing, smart energy, to mention a few. Courses have been introduced both at the PhD and at the Master levels. However, these existing courses focus on particular aspects of WSNs (Networking, or Signal Processing, or Embedded Software), whereas WSNs encompass disciplines traditionally separated in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. This paper gives two original contributions: the essential knowledge that should be brought in a WSNs course is characterized, and a course structure with an harmonious holistic approach is proposed. A method based on both theory and experiments is illustrated for the design of this course, whereby the students have hands-on to implement, understand, and develop in practice the implications of theoretical concepts. Theory and applications are thus considered all together. Ultimately, the objective of this paper is to design a new course, to use innovative hands-on experiments to illustrate the theoretical concepts in the course, to show that theoretical aspects are essential for the solution of real-life engineering WSNs problems, and finally to create a fun and interesting teaching and learning environments for WSNs.

Computer Applications in Engineering Education

Abstract:Electromagnetics is a core course in the undergraduate electrical engineering curriculum that entails the study of electric and magnetic fields. Students, usually, perceive it as a challenging course since it requires them to build mental models of the spatial and time‐varying electric and magnetic fields that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Moreover, the mathematics used in this subject is quite complex and abstract and can further compound the students' difficulties in connecting abstract math with real‐life industry applications. To address these challenges, the author designed an undergraduate electromagentics course, which utilized certain pedagogical techniques to enhance the learning experience of the students. These pedagogies include extensive usage of MATLAB simulations, animations, and videos during the course that helps students visualize and conceptualize abstract concepts, usage of a comprehensive course‐wide equation sheet, and highlighting the connection of the theory with real‐life applications and industry jobs. This paper presents some of the simulations designed by the author as part of this course. Moreover, the equation sheet is also reproduced and access to its L A T E X source is provided for the benefit of other instructors and students. The paper also presents results from the end‐of‐semester students' survey to measure the efficacy of these pedagogical techniques.
