Abstract:A summary of the optimization of the SiD detector is given. To optimize its performance in terms of Particle Flow Algorithms (PFA), five basic detector parameters have been varied and the impact on the obtained energy resolution using Particle Flow Algorithms has been studied using di-jets events. Finally the optimized detector used for the Letter of Intent (LoI) is briefly summarized as a result from these studies.

Abstract:The particle detectors at the future linear colliders, like ILD and SiD, use Particle Flow Algorithms (PFA)s to reach higher jet energy resolutions than the classical pure calorimetry. During the past few years, the University of Iowa group developed the Iowa PFA. This algorithm has been used to benchmark the performance of the SiD detector for the Letter Of Intent of 2009. Recently, new strategies and techniques are included in the different parts of this algorithm in order to increase its performance. The latest improvements and results of the Iowa PFA will be discussed.

Abstract:The SiD Detector is one of two detector designs for the future International Linear Collider (ILC) that were validated in 2012 SiD features a compact, cost-constrained design for precision Higgs and other measurements, and sensitivity to a wide range of possible new phenomena. A robust silicon vertex and tracking system, combined with a five Tesla central solenoidal field, provides excellent momentum resolution. The highly granular calorimeter system is optimized for Particle Flow application to achieve very good jet energy resolution over a wide range of energies. With a potential construction date of the ILC moving closer, it is now the time to review the design and technology decision that have been made during the DBD phase and reconsider them in the light of the recent technological advances. For each area of SiD development R&D topics and opportunities for participation will be discussed.

Abstract:The Analog Hadronic Calorimeter (AHCAL) is one option of highly granular calorimeters optimised with the Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA) and considered for experiments at future lepton colliders. It consists of dense steel plates as absorber interleaved with plastic scintillator tiles, individually read out by Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs). A novel SiPM developed by the Novel Device Laboratory (NDL) with an active area of 1 mm(2) and a pixel pitch of 12.5 micron(1) has been mainly investigated. The characterisation studies include single photon calibration, dynamic range and performance of crosstalk as well as Minimum Ionising Particle (MIP) detection efficiency of a detector unit. Combined tests with a dedicated ASIC (SPIROC2E) for multi-channel SiPMs show that single photon spectra can be obtained, given the relatively small SiPM gain (similar to 2 x 10(5)). The linearity of the SiPMs in response to incident photons of less than 10,000 (500 MIPs) is within 5% from measurements. Meanwhile, the dark count rate (DCR) is around 2 x 10(-3) Hz at a threshold 0.5 MIP (10 p.e.) and the MIP detection efficiency of a detector unit can be near 95% from the MIP spectrum. These studies indicate the NDL-SiPM-12.5 can be a photosensor candidate for the future scintillator-based hadronic calorimeters.

Abstract:Within the CALICE collaboration, several concepts for the hadronic calorimeter of a future linear collider detector are studied. After having demonstrated the capabilities of the measurement methods in "physics prototypes", the focus now lies on improving their implementation in "engineering prototypes", that are scalable to the full linear collider detector. The Analog Hadron Calorimeter (AHCAL) concept is a sampling calorimeter of tungsten or steel absorber plates and plastic scintillator tiles read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) as active material. The front-end chips are integrated into the active layers of the calorimeter and are designed for minimizing power consumption by rapidly cycling the power according to the beam structure of a linear accelerator. The versatile electronics allows the prototype to be equipped with different types of scintillator tiles and SiPMs. A prototype with ~2200 channels, equipped with several types of scintillator tiles and SiPMs, was tested with muons and electrons in a 1.5 T magnet at the CERN SPS in May 2017 to establish the operational stability with power pulsing and the overall detector performance in a magnetic field.

Abstract:At the FAIR facility, currently under construction at GSI (Darmstadt), a 1.5 AGeV uranium beam with intensities up to 2.5 × 10 11 238 U/spill will impinge on a graphite target at the entrance of the Super-FRS for the production of a wide range of rare isotopes by projectile fission and fragmentation. The next generation in-flight magnetic separator Super-FRS, operated up to a magnetic rigidity of 20 Tm with a large angular acceptance (Δθ = ± 40 mrad, Δφ = ± 20 mrad) and momentum acceptance (Δ p/p = ± 2.5%), requires a new generation of tracking detectors with a position resolution of 0.2 mm (σ x ) over large detector areas reaching up to 570 cm 2 . Besides gas detectors, planar detectors made of scintillating fibers are an option worth investigating not only because of the comparable material budget but especially for the fast response and high-rate capability. A one-dimensional prototype consisting of 128 fibers with active area of 25.6 × 100 mm 2 coupled to Multi-Pixel-Photon Counters (MPPCs) and readout by FPGA TDC is described together with some recent 197 Au beam test results.

Abstract:The Particle Flow (PFlow) approach to calorimetry promises to deliver unprecedented jet energy resolution for experiments at future high energy colliders such as the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC). This paper describes the PandoraPFA particle flow algorithm which is then used to perform the first systematic study of the potential of high granularity PFlow calorimetry. For simulated events in the ILD detector concept, a jet energy resolution of sigma_E/E < 3.8 % is achieved for 40-400 GeV jets. This result, which demonstrates that high granularity PFlow calorimetry can meet the challenging ILC jet energy resolution goals, does not depend strongly on the details of the Monte Carlo modelling of hadronic showers. The PandoraPFA algorithm is also used to investigate the general features of a collider detector optimised for high granularity PFlow calorimetry. Finally, a first study of the potential of high granularity PFlow calorimetry at a multi-TeV lepton collider, such as CLIC, is presented.

Abstract:The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) has been under developing for the precision measurements of the Higgs Boson. The requirement of jet energy resolution is 3% ∼4% and the calorimeters should have high energy resolution. Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA) oriented highly granular calorimeters based on Arbor algorithm could achieve it and one option of Hadronic Calorimeter (HCAL) is Analog Hcal (AHCAL) composed of stainless steel as absorber and scintillator as active medium, individually read out by Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). In this paper, 6 types of SiPMs from Hamamatsu and Novel Device Laboratory (NDL) are compared for the CEPC-AHCAL. The performance on crosstalk, Dark Count Rate (DCR), gain and Minimum Ionization Particles (MIP) spectrum combined the front-end electronics (SPIROC2E) and different SiPMs are studied. The better performance among them is the SiPMs typed 13360-1325PE from Hamamatsu from our measurements.

Abstract:Recent work carried out in the SiD Consortium is reported. Results have been obtained with the Chronopix version 3 chip, intended for the SiD vertex detector. A test structure is being produced for KPiXM, a CMOS MAPS approach that could be used for the tracker and electromagnetic calorimeter. Tracker sensors are being tested and a new prototype sensor is being planned. A new effort on tracker support structures has begun and first prototypes produced. New studies of the pair background envelope in the beam pipe have been carried out. Electromagnetic calorimeter testbeam data has been analysed and plans are being developed for a full stack prototype. New comprehensive studies of high-rate backgrounds and muons from the beam delivery system have been carried out to determine aspects of the forward region layout. Work has started on alignment and calibration strategies; and progress has been made on a new simulation and reconstruction framework for SiD.

Abstract:International Large Detector (ILD) adopts Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA) for precise measurement of multiple jets. The electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) of ILD has two candidates sensor technologies for PFA, which are pixelized silicon sensors and scintillator-strips with silicon photomultipliers. Pixelized silicon sensors have higher granularity for PFA, however they have an issue of cost reduction. In contrast, scintillator-strips have an advantage of relatively low cost and a disadvantage of degradation of position resolution by ghost hits, which are generated by orthogonal arrangement. Hybrid ECAL using both candidates is proposed to supplement these disadvantages. In this paper, we report an optimization study of the hybrid ECAL using detector simulation.

Abstract:The PSI Positron Production ( P3 or P-cubed) experiment is a e+ source and capture system with the potential to increase by an order of magnitude the state-of-the-art e+ yield normalized to the drive linac energy, a highly desirable goal for future colliders. The experiment is framed in the FCC-ee injector study and will be hosted at SwissFEL, located at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. This paper presents the P3 project at an advanced stage, with an emphasis on a capture system featuring a novel e+ matching device based on high-temperature superconducting solenoids, followed by two large aperture rf cavities surrounded by normal-conducting solenoids. The diagnostics design is also introduced, including monitors of charge, energy spectrum, and bunch-by-bunch longitudinal profile simultaneously for secondary e+ and e− . Abstract:Crilin (Crystal Calorimeter with Longitudinal Information) is a semi-homogeneous, longitudinally segmented electromagnetic calorimeter based on high-$Z$, ultra-fast crystals with UV-extended SiPM readout. The Crilin design has been proposed as a candidate solution for both a future Muon Collider barrel ECAL and for the Small Angle Calorimeter of the HIKE experiment. As a part of the Crilin development program, we have carried out beam tests of small ($10\times10\times40$~mm$^3$) lead fluoride (PbF$_2$) and ultra-fast lead tungstate (PbWO$_4$, PWO) crystals with 120~GeV electrons at the CERN SPS to study the light yield, timing response, and systematics of light collection with a proposed readout scheme. For a single crystal of PbF$_2$, corresponding to a single Crilin cell, a time resolution of better than 25~ps is obtained for $>$3 GeV of deposited energy. For a single cell of \pwo, a time resolution of better than 45~ps is obtained for the same range of deposited energy. This timing performance fully satisfies the design requirements for the Muon Collider and HIKE experiments. Further optimizations of the readout scheme and crystal surface preparation are expected to bring further improvements.

Tests of a particle flow algorithm with CALICE test beam data

Abstract:The studies presented in this paper provide a first experimental test of the Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA) concept using data recorded in high granularity calorimeters. Pairs of overlaid pion showers from CALICE 2007 test beam data are reconstructed by the PandoraPFA program developed to implement PFA for a future lepton collider. Recovery of a neutral hadron's energy in the vicinity of a charged hadron is studied. The impact of the two overlapping hadron showers on energy resolution is investigated. The dependence of the confusion error on the distance between a 10 GeV neutral hadron and a charged pion is derived for pion energies of 10 and 30 GeV which are representative of a 100 GeV jet. The comparison of these test beam data results with Monte Carlo simulation is done for various hadron shower models within the GEANT4 framework. The results for simulated particles and for beam data are in good agreement thereby providing support for previous simulation studies of the power of Particle Flow Calorimetry at a future lepton collider.

Abstract:Particle Flow Algorithms (PFAs) have been proposed as a method of improving the jet energy resolution of future colliding beam detectors. PFAs require calorimeters with high granularity to enable three-dimensional imaging of events. The Calorimeter for the Linear Collider Collaboration (CALICE) is developing and testing prototypes of such highly segmented calorimeters. In this context, a large prototype of a Digital Hadron Calorimeter (DHCAL) was developed and constructed by a group led by Argonne National Laboratory. The DHCAL consists of 52 layers, instrumented with Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) and interleaved with steel absorber plates. The RPCs are read out by 1 x 1 cm2 pads with a 1-bit resolution (digital readout). The DHCAL prototype has approximately 480,000 readout channels. This talk reports on the design, construction and commissioning of the DHCAL. The DHCAL was installed at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility in fall 2010 and data was collected through the summer 2011.

Abstract:Micro-pattern gaseous detectors (MPGDs) are a promising readout technology for hadronic calorimeters (HCAL) thanks to their good space resolution, longevity and rate capability. We describe the development of a HCAL based on MPGDs for an experiment at the proposed Muon Collider. The design of a semi-digital MPGD-HCAL is shown and its performance is calculated with Monte Carlo simulations with high-energy pions, showing an energy resolution down to 8\% for \SI{80}{\giga\eV} pions. We also present the performance of twelve MPGD prototypes with different technologies (MicroMegas, $\mu$-RWELL and RPWELL) assembled and operated in test beam first with high-energy muons and later with pions in a hadronic calorimeter prototype of $\sim1\,\lambda_\text{I}$ length; the detectors have a good response uniformity (lower than 17\%) and space resolution and their performance in the calorimeter shows very good agreement with the Monte Carlo shower calculation.

Abstract:The analog hadron calorimeter for the International Linear Collider (ILC) of the CALICE collaboration utilized novel silicon detectors, the Sillicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs), for the detection of scintillation light coming from very small scintillator cells 3x3x0.5 cm^3. This technology allows the construction of highly granular calorimeters used for excellent shower separation and therefore outstanding jet energy resolution using the particle flow concept. Since the SiPMs still have potential for further improvements, we developed a setup dedicated to the measurement of parameters like the areal distribution of relative photon detection efficiency and crosstalk probability which are used to characterize and compare different devices. Thanks to the precise positioning system together with excellent focusing of the light source we are capable of scanning whole SiPMs with an area of ca. 1 mm^2 at a sub-pixel resolution of 1-2 \mu{}m. A further alignment compensation feature allows us to conduct separate analysis on each single pixel of a SiPM. We present the technical description of our measurement setup and results obtained for two types of SiPMs. The first one is a commercial Hamamatsu MPPC with 50 \mu{}m pixel size, the second one was the second iteration series SiMPl device developed and manufactured in the Semiconductor Laboratory of the Max Planck Institute.
