Abstract:Wearable rehabilitation robots can bring great help to the elderly and sport injury patients. However, most of the current traditional rehabilitation robots adopt rigid actuators, which limits their compliance and human-robot interaction performance. In this paper, a novel upper limb rehabilitation robot actuated by pneumatic artificial muscles is developed and its dynamic model is constructed for control issue. In order to achieve more accurate and adaptive rehabilitation robot control, this paper proposes a bio-inspired control architecture and cerebellum-like controller network. To demonstrate the control effect of the proposed theoretical method, a series of simulations are conducted on the robot, and the results show that the proposed controller has good tracking performance and adaptation.
Control of Antagonistic McKibben Muscles Via a Bio-inspired Approach

Abstract:McKibben muscles are increasingly used in many robotic applications due to their advantages of lightweight, compliant, and skeletal muscles-like behaviours. However, there are still huge challenges in the motion control of McKibben muscles due to the system nonlinearity (e.g., hysteresis) and model uncertainties. To investigate the control issues, a soft artificial arm actuated by an antagonistic pair of McKibben muscles, mimicking the biological structure of skeleton-muscle systems, is developed. Inspired by the biological motor control capability that humans can control and coordinate a group of muscles to achieve complex motions, a cerebellum-like controller based on Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) is employed for the motion control of the developed artificial arm. Benefit from the employment of the SNN-based cerebellar model, the proposed control scheme provides online adaptive learning capability, good computational efficiency, fast response, and strong robustness. Finally, several simulations and experiments are conducted subject to different environmental disturbances. Both simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed method can achieve good tracking performance, adaptability, and strong robustness.

Abstract:Abstract In the past few decades, robotics research has witnessed an increasingly high interest in miniaturized, intelligent, and integrated robots. The imperative component of a robot is the actuator that determines its performance. Although traditional rigid drives such as motors and gas engines have shown great prevalence in most macroscale circumstances, the reduction of these drives to the millimeter or even lower scale results in a significant increase in manufacturing difficulty accompanied by a remarkable performance decline. Biohybrid robots driven by living cells can be a potential solution to overcome these drawbacks by benefiting from the intrinsic microscale self-assembly of living tissues and high energy efficiency, which, among other unprecedented properties, also feature flexibility, self-repair, and even multiple degrees of freedom. This paper systematically reviews the development of biohybrid robots. First, the development of biological flexible drivers is introduced while emphasizing on their advantages over traditional drivers. Second, up-to-date works regarding biohybrid robots are reviewed in detail from three aspects: biological driving sources, actuator materials, and structures with associated control methodologies. Finally, the potential future applications and major challenges of biohybrid robots are explored. Graphic abstract

Steering Muscle-Based Bio-Syncretic Robot Through Bionic Optimized Biped Mechanical Design

Abstract:Bio-syncretic robots consisting of artificial structures and living muscle cells have attracted much attention owing to their potential advantages, such as high drive efficiency, miniaturization, and compatibility. Motion controllability, as an important factor related to the main performance of bio-syncretic robots, has been explored in numerous studies. However, most of the existing bio-syncretic robots still face challenges related to the further development of steerable kinematic dexterity. In this study, a bionic optimized biped fully soft bio-syncretic robot actuated by two muscle tissues and steered with a direction-controllable electric field generated by external circularly distributed multiple electrodes has been developed. The developed bio-syncretic robot could realize wirelessly steerable motion and effective transportation of microparticle cargo on artificial polystyrene and biological pork tripe surfaces. This study may provide an effective strategy for the development of bio-syncretic robots and other related studies, such as nonliving soft robot design and muscle tissue engineering.

Abstract:Biohybrid robots retain the innate biological characteristics and behavioral traits of animals, making them valuable in applications such as disaster relief, exploration of unknown terrains, and medical care. This review aims to comprehensively discuss the evolution of biohybrid robots, their key technologies and applications, and the challenges they face. By analyzing studies conducted on terrestrial, aquatic, and aerial biohybrid robots, we gain a deeper understanding of how these technologies have made significant progress in simulating natural organisms, improving mechanical performance, and intelligent control. Additionally, we address challenges associated with the application of electrical stimulation technology, the precision of neural signal monitoring, and the ethical considerations for biohybrid robots. We highlight the importance of future research focusing on developing more sophisticated and biocompatible control methods while prioritizing animal welfare. We believe that exploring multimodal monitoring and stimulation technologies holds the potential to enhance the performance of biohybrid robots. These efforts are expected to pave the way for biohybrid robotics technology to introduce greater innovation and well-being to human society in the future.

Abstract:As simulators of organisms in Nature, soft robots have been developed over the past few decades. In particular, biohybrid robots constructed by integrating living cells with soft materials demonstrate the unique advantage of simulating the construction and functions of human tissues or organs, thus attracting extensive attention and research interest. Here, we present up-to-date studies concerning biohybrid robots with various biological actuators such as contractile cells and microorganisms. After presenting the basic components including biological components and synthetic materials, the controlling methods and locomotion modalities of biohybrid robots are clarified and summarized. We then focus on the applications, especially the biomedical applications, of the biohybrid robots including drug delivery, bioimaging, and tissue engineering. The challenges and prospects for the future development of biohybrid robots are also presented.

Abstract:We propose a biomimetic approach for steering motion control of a snake robot. Inspired by a vertebrate biological motor system paradigm, a hierarchical control scheme is adopted. In the control scheme, an artificial central pattern generator (CPG) is employed to generate serpentine locomotion in the robot. This generator outputs the coordinated desired joint angle commands to each lower-level effector controller, while the locomotion can be controlled through CPG modulation by a higher-level motion controller. The motion controller consists of a cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) and a proportional-derivative (PD) controller. Because of the fast learning ability of the CMAC, the proposed motion controller can drive the robot to track the desired orientation and adapt to unexpected perturbations. The PD controller is employed to expedite the convergence speed of the motion controller. Finally, both numerical studies and experiments proved that the proposed approach can help the snake robot achieve good tracking performance and adaptability in a varying environment.
Integrated Closed-loop Control of Bio-actuation for Proprioceptive Bio-hybrid Robots

Abstract:Biohybrid robots are emergent soft robots that combine engineered artificial structures and living biosystems to exploit unique characteristics of biological cells and tissues. Skeletal muscle tissue-based bio-actuators can respond to externally applied stimuli, such as electrical fields. However, current bio-actuation systems rely on open-loop control strategies that lack knowledge of the actuator’s state. The regulation of output force and position of bio-hybrid robots requires self-sensing control systems that combine bio-actuators with sensors and control paradigms. Here, we propose a soft, fiber-shaped mechanical sensor based on a composite with piezoresistive properties that efficiently integrates with engineered skeletal muscle tissue and senses its contracting states in a cell culture environment in the presence of applied electrical fields. After testing the sensor’s insulation and biocompatibility, we characterized its sensitivity for typical strains (<1%) and proved its ability to detect motions from contractile skeletal muscle tissue constructs. Finally, we showed that the sensor response can feed an autonomous control system, thus demonstrating the first proprioceptive bio-hybrid robot that can sense and respond to its contraction state. In addition to inspiring intelligent implantable systems, informative biomedical models, and other bioelectronic systems, the proposed technology will encourage strategies to exceed the durability, design, and portability limitations of biohybrid robots and confer them decisional autonomy, thus driving the paradigm shift between bio-actuators and intelligent bio-hybrid robots.

Abstract:The industrial revolution of the 19th century marked the onset of an era of machines and robots that transformed societies. Since the beginning of the 21st century, a new generation of robots envisions similar societal transformation. These robots are biohybrid: part living and part engineered. They may self-assemble and emerge from complex interactions between living cells. While this new era of living robots presents unprecedented opportunities for positive societal impact, it also poses a host of ethical challenges. A systematic, nuanced examination of these ethical issues is of paramount importance to guide the evolution of this nascent field. Multidisciplinary fields face the challenge that inertia around collective action to address ethical boundaries may result in unexpected consequences for researchers and societies alike. In this Perspective, we i) clarify the ethical challenges associated with biohybrid robotics, ii) discuss the need for and elements of a potential governance framework tailored to this technology; and iii) propose tangible steps toward ethical compliance and policy formation in the field of biohybrid robotics.

Abstract:Soft robots have recently attracted increased attention because their characteristics of low‐cost fabrication, durability, and deformability make them uniquely suited for applications in bio‐integrated systems. Being fundamentally different from traditional rigid robots, soft robots exhibit properties of infinite degrees of freedom (DOF) and nonlinear materials properties that require innovations in control systems. With the rapid development of materials science, robotics, and artificial intelligence, the diversification of actuator mechanisms and algorithms has enabled a wide range of unique control strategies. This review summarizes the basics of actuator mechanisms and control strategies, including open‐loop control, closed‐loop control, and autonomous control, and discusses their implementation from diversified perspectives. Control strategies are evaluated based on their compatibility with materials sets, application goals, and implementation route. The emerging directions are forecasted from the perspectives of interfacing between controller and actuator, underactuated control strategies, and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI). In this review article, the basics of actuator mechanisms and control strategies, including open‐loop control, closed‐loop control and autonomous control, are summarized and their implemetation and emerging directions from diversifield perspectives for audiences from different areas (material science, biology, ribotics, etc.) are discussed.

Dexterous Manipulation Control of a Bionic Prosthesis in Cooperation with Human Upper Limbs

Abstract:In this study, a dexterous manipulation control scheme is presented, designed to facilitate the collaborative completion of various tasks using a bionic prosthesis and the healthy upper limb of a human. First, different “attractive region in environment” (ARIE) is established for specific bimanual tasks. This approach helps eliminate system uncertainty through state-independent inputs. Then a general human-robot interaction (HRI) control framework is presented, which relies on the virtual ARIE and the environment-constrained energy function. This framework is designed for collaborative tasks involving the healthy limb and prosthesis within the same workspace. Finally, a stable and unified controller consists of the environment constrained energy function and an adaptive robust method is designed for various prosthetic tasks. This controller is tailored for diverse prosthetic tasks, seamlessly integrating various task requirements and modes into a cohesive prosthetic control strategy. The proposed manipulation scheme for cooperating between the prosthesis and the healthy limb is shown to be effective by the experiment results.

Abstract:Complex robotic systems, such as humanoid robot hands, soft robots, and walking robots, pose a challenging control problem due to their high dimensionality and heavy non-linearities. Conventional model-based feedback controllers demonstrate robustness and stability but struggle to cope with the escalating system design and tuning complexity accompanying larger dimensions. In contrast, data-driven methods such as artificial neural networks excel at representing high-dimensional data but lack robustness, generalization, and real-time adaptiveness. In response to these challenges, researchers are directing their focus to biological paradigms, drawing inspiration from the remarkable control capabilities inherent in the human body. This has motivated the exploration of new control methods aimed at closely emulating the motor functions of the brain given the current insights in neuroscience. Recent investigation into these Brain-Inspired control techniques have yielded promising results, notably in tasks involving trajectory tracking and robot locomotion. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the foremost trends in biomimetic brain-inspired control methods to tackle the intricacies associated with controlling complex robotic systems.

Abstract:The next robotics frontier will be led by biohybrids. Capable biohybrid robots require microfluidics to sustain, improve, and scale the architectural complexity of their core ingredient: biological tissues. Advances in microfluidics have already revolutionized disease modeling and drug development, and are positioned to impact regenerative medicine but have yet to apply to biohybrids. Fusing microfluidics with living materials will improve tissue perfusion and maturation, and enable precise patterning of sensing, processing, and control elements. This perspective suggests future developments in advanced biohybrids.

Abstract:Power wheelchair controllers become more sophisticated as motor control and human/machine interaction research progresses. The result of this increasing sophistication is that more people are provided with independent mobility. The challenge for engineering is to provide safe and effective mobility in a dynamic environment. Fortunately, many of the control methods outlined in here make that goal attainable. Tuneable controllers have had a significant impact, but they only allude to the possibilities for improved mobility. Shared control proves promising for expanding the number and variety of power wheelchair users. Integrated control will increase the independence of power wheelchair users in all realms of assistive technology. Fault-tolerant control can guide one towards safer and more reliable power wheelchairs. Fault-tolerant controllers may also be a cost effective solution to many electromagnetic interference related issues. Through thoughtful research and design, power wheelchair control will progress along safe and effective pathways towards providing users independent and self-guided mobility.<>

Abstract:Animals can accomplish many incredible behavioral feats across a wide range of operational environments and scales that current robots struggle to match. One explanation for this performance gap is the extraordinary properties of the biological materials that comprise animals, such as muscle tissue. Using living muscle tissue as an actuator can endow robotic systems with highly desirable properties such as self-healing, compliance, and biocompatibility. Unlike traditional soft robotic actuators, living muscle biohybrid actuators exhibit unique adaptability, growing stronger with use. The dependency of a muscle's force output on its use history endows muscular organisms the ability to dynamically adapt to their environment, getting better at tasks over time. While muscle adaptability is a benefit to muscular organisms, it currently presents a challenge for biohybrid researchers: how does one design and control a robot whose actuators' force output changes over time? Here, we incorporate muscle adaptability into a many-muscle biohybrid robot design and modeling tool, leveraging reinforcement learning as both a co-design partner and system controller. As a controller, our learning agents coordinated the independent contraction of 42 muscles distributed on a lattice worm structure to successfully steer it towards eight distinct targets while incorporating muscle adaptability. As a co-design tool, our agents enable users to identify which muscles are important to accomplishing a given task. Our results show that adaptive agents outperform non-adaptive agents in terms of maximum rewards and training time. Together, these contributions can both enable the elucidation of muscle actuator adaptation and inform the design and modeling of adaptive, performant, many-muscle robots.

Abstract:While full automation of road vehicles remains a future goal, shared-control and semiautonomous driving-involving transitions of control between the human and the machine-are more feasible objectives in the near term. These alternative driving modes will benefit from new research toward novel steering control devices, more suitably where machine intelligence only partially controls the vehicle. In this article, it is proposed that when the human shares the control of a vehicle with an autonomous or semiautonomous system, a force control, or nondisplacement steering wheel (i.e., a steering wheel which does not rotate but detects the applied torque by the human driver) can be advantageous under certain schemes: tight rein or loose rein modes according to the H -metaphor. We support this proposition with the first experiments to the best of our knowledge, in which human participants drove in a simulated road scene with a force control steering wheel (FCSW). The experiments exhibited that humans can adapt promptly to force control steering and are able to control the vehicle smoothly. Different transfer functions are tested, which translate the applied torque at the FCSW to the steering angle at the wheels of the vehicle; it is shown that fractional order transfer functions increment steering stability and control accuracy when using a force control device. The transition of control experiments is also performed with both: a conventional and an FCSW. This prototypical steering system can be realized via steer-by-wire controls, which are already incorporated in commercially available vehicles.

Abstract:Purpose of Review: This review provides an overview of the state of the art in bioinspired soft robotics with by examining advancements in actuation, functionality, modeling, and control. Recent Findings: Recent research into actuation methods, such as artificial muscles, have expanded the functionality and potential use of bioinspired soft robots. Additionally, the application of finite dimensional models has improved computational efficiency for modeling soft continuum systems, and garnered interest as a basis for controller formulation. Summary: Bioinspiration in the field of soft robotics has led to diverse approaches to problems in a range of task spaces. In particular, new capabilities in system simplification, miniaturization, and untethering have each contributed to the field's growth. There is still significant room for improvement in the streamlining of design and manufacturing for these systems, as well as in their control.
