Abstract:Big Bang Nucleosynthesis represents perhaps the first, and still perhaps the most powerful particle-astrophysics connection. As such, it should provide an example for other work in this area. I discuss the current status of standard model BBN predictions and constraints, and then argue that the issue of observational systematic uncertainties is the key feature limiting our ability to constrain theory with observation. Nevertheless, several very important constraints are currently obtainable. For example, assuming maximal systematic uncertainties in $^4$He, D, and $^7$Li we find a conservative upper limit of $\Omega_B \le 0.16$ in order for BBN predictions to agree with observations. Equally significant, we find that BBN predictions are inconsistent unless $^4He$ abundance by mass is greater than $23.9\%$, or D +$^3$He estimates are incorrect. By contrast, unless systematic uncertainties are taken into account, the quoted $2\sigma$ observational upper limit on the primordial $^4He$ fraction is $23.8\%$.

Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis in Light of Discordant Deuterium Measurements

Abstract:Two dimensional concordance plots involving the baryon-to-photon ratio, $\eta$, and an effective number of light neutrinos, $N_{\nu}$, are used to discuss the overall consistency of standard big-bang nucleosynthesis in light of recent determinations of the primordial deuterium ($^2$H) abundance. Observations of high-redshift Ly-$\alpha$ clouds have provided discordant $^2$H/H determinations: one cloud with $^2$H/H high compared with the previously accepted upper limit on ($^2$H + $^3$He)/H; and one system with a significantly lower upper bound on $^2$H/H than those previously obtained. The high value of $^2$H/H agrees well with the current observationally-inferred primordial abundances of $^4$He and $^7$Li for $N_{\nu}=3$. The low value of $^2$H/H does not fit well with the current observationally-inferred primordial abundance of $^4$He for $N_{\nu}=3$. In addition, if the low value of $^2$H/H is indicative of the primordial deuterium abundance, then significant depletion of $^7$Li in old, hot Pop II halo stars is probably required to obtain a concordant range of $\eta$, for {\em any} effective number of neutrino flavors. The use of conservative ranges for the primordial abundances of $^2$H, $^4$He, and $^7$Li allow success of the standard picture for $N_{\nu}=3$.

Abstract:The determination of the primeval deuterium abundance has opened a precision era in big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), making accurate predictions more important than ever before. We present in analytic form new, more precise predictions for the light-element abundances and their error matrix. Using our predictions and the primeval deuterium abundance we infer a baryon density of Omega_B h^2 = 0.020 pm 0.002 (95% cl) and find no evidence for stellar production (or destruction) of 3He beyond burning D to 3He. Conclusions about 4He and 7Li currently hinge upon possible systematic error in their measurements.

Revisiting the Lithium abundance problem in Big-Bang nucleosynthesis

Abstract:One of the three testaments in favor of the big bang theory is the prediction of the primordial elemental abundances in the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The Standard BBN is a parameter-free theory due to the precise knowledge of the baryon-to-photon ratio of the Universe obtained from studies of the anisotropies of cosmic microwave background radiation. Although the computed abundances of light elements during primordial nucleosynthesis and those determined from observations are in good agreement throughout a range of nine orders of magnitude, there is still a disparity of $^7$Li abundance overestimated by a factor of $\sim 2.5$ when calculated theoretically. The number of light neutrino flavors, the neutron lifetime and the baryon-to-photon ratio in addition to the astrophysical nuclear reaction rates determine the primordial abundances. We previously looked into the impact of updating baryon-to-photon ratio and neutron lifetime and changing quite a few reaction rates on the yields of light element abundances in BBN. In this work, calculations are performed using new reaction rates for $^3$H(p,$\gamma$)$^4$He, $^6$Li(p,$\gamma$)$^7$Be, $^7$Be(p,$\gamma$)$^8$B, $^{13}$N(p,$\gamma$)$^{14}$O, $^7$Li(n,$\gamma$)$^8$Li and $^{11}$B(n,$\gamma$)$^{12}$B along with the latest measured value of neutron lifetime. We observe from theoretical calculations that these changes result in improvement by causing further reduction in the abundance of $^7$Li than calculated earlier.

Primordial Nucleosynthesis with Non-Extensive Statistics

Abstract:The conventional Big Bang model successfully anticipates the initial abundances of 2H(D), 3He, and 4He, aligning remarkably well with observational data. However, a persistent challenge arises in the case of 7Li, where the predicted abundance exceeds observations by a factor of approximately three. Despite numerous efforts employing traditional nuclear physics to address this incongruity over the years, the enigma surrounding the lithium anomaly endures. In this context, we embark on an exploration of Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) of light element abundances with the application of Tsallis non-extensive statistics. A comparison is made between the outcomes obtained by varying the non-extensive parameter q away from its unity value and both observational data and abundance predictions derived from the conventional big bang model. A good agreement is found for the abundances of 4He, 3He and 7Li, implying that the lithium abundance puzzle might be due to a subtle fine-tuning of the physics ingredients used to determine the BBN. However, the deuterium abundance deviates from observations.

Abstract:The Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) model is a cornerstone for the understanding of the evolution of the early universe, making seminal predictions that are in outstanding agreement with the present observation of light element abundances in the universe. Perhaps, the only remaining issue to be solved by theory is the so-called "lithium abundance problem". Dedicated experimental efforts to measure the relevant nuclear cross sections used as input of the model have lead to an increased level of accuracy in the prediction of the light element primordial abundances. The rise of indirect experimental techniques during the preceding few decades has permitted the access of reaction information beyond the limitations of direct measurements. New theoretical developments have also opened a fertile ground for tests of physics beyond the standard model of atomic, nuclear, statistics, and particle physics. We review the latest contributions of our group for possible solutions of the lithium problem.

Abstract:We assess the status of big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) in light of the final Planck data release and other recent developments, and in anticipation of future measurements. Planck data from the recombination era fix the cosmic baryon density to 0.9% precision, and now damping tail measurements determine the helium abundance and effective number of neutrinos with precision approaching that of astronomical and BBN determinations respectively. All three parameters are related by BBN . In addition, new high-redshift measurements give D/H to better precision than theoretical predictions, and new Li/H data reconfirm the lithium problem. We present new 7Be(n,p)7Li rates using new neutron capture measurements; we have also examined the effect of proposed changes in the d(p,γ)3He rates. Using these results we perform a series of likelihood analyses. We assess BBN/CMB consistency, with attention to how our results depend on the choice of Planck data, as well as how the results depend on the choice of non-BBN, non-Planck data sets. Most importantly the lithium problem remains, and indeed is more acute given the very tight D/H observational constraints; new neutron capture data reveals systematics that somewhat increases uncertainty and thus slightly reduces but does not essentially change the problem. We confirm that d(p,γ)3He theoretical rates brings D/H out of agreement and slightly increases 7Li new experimental data are needed at BBN energies. Setting the lithium problem aside, we find the effective number of neutrino species at BBN is Nν = 2.86 ± 0.15. Future CMB Stage obreakdash-4 measurements promise substantial improvements in BBN parameters: helium abundance determinations will be competitive with the best astronomical determinations, and Neff will approach sensitivities capable of detecting the effects of Standard Model neutrino heating of the primordial plasma.

Abstract:Big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) theory, together with the precise WMAP cosmic baryon density, makes tight predictions for the abundances of the lightest elements. Deuterium and 4He measurements agree well with expectations, but 7Li observations lie a factor 3-4 below the BBN+WMAP prediction. This 4-5\sigma\ mismatch constitutes the cosmic "lithium problem," with disparate solutions possible. (1) Astrophysical systematics in the observations could exist but are increasingly constrained. (2) Nuclear physics experiments provide a wealth of well-measured cross-section data, but 7Be destruction could be enhanced by unknown or poorly-measured resonances, such as 7Be + 3He -> 10C^* -> p + 9B. (3) Physics beyond the Standard Model can alter the 7Li abundance, though D and 4He must remain unperturbed; we discuss such scenarios, highlighting decaying Supersymmetric particles and time-varying fundamental constants. Present and planned experiments could reveal which (if any) of these is the solution to the problem.

New reaction rates for improved primordial D/H calculation and the cosmic evolution of deuterium

Abstract:Primordial or big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is one of the three historical strong evidences for the big bang model. Standard BBN is now a parameter free theory, since the baryonic density of the Universe has been deduced with an unprecedented precision from observations of the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. There is a good agreement between the primordial abundances of 4He, D, 3He and 7Li deduced from observations and from primordial nucleosynthesis calculations. However, the 7Li calculated abundance is significantly higher than the one deduced from spectroscopic observations and remains an open problem. In addition, recent deuterium observations have drastically reduced the uncertainty on D/H, to reach a value of 1.6%. It needs to be matched by BBN predictions whose precision is now limited by thermonuclear reaction rate uncertainties. This is especially important as many attempts to reconcile Li observations with models lead to an increased D prediction. Here, we re-evaluates the D(p,g)3He, D(d,n)3He and D(d,p)3H reaction rates that govern deuterium destruction, incorporating new experimental data and carefully accounting for systematic uncertainties. Contrary to previous evaluations, we use theoretical ab initio models for the energy dependence of the S-factors. As a result, these rates increase at BBN temperatures, leading to a reduced value of D/H = (2.45$\pm0.10)\times10^{-5}$ (2$\sigma$), in agreement with observations.

Cosmological Deuterium Abundance and the Baryon Density of the Universe

Abstract:Standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBNS) promises accurate predictions of the primordial abundances of deuterium, helium-3, helium-4 and lithium-7 as a function of a single parameter. Previous measurements have nearly always been interpreted as confirmation of the model (Copi, Schramm & Turner 1995). Here we present a measurement of the deuterium to hydrogen ratio (D/H) in a newly discovered high redshift metal-poor gas cloud at redshift $z=2.504$. This confirms our earlier measurement of D/H (Tytler, Fan & Burles 1996), and together they give the first accurate measurement of the primordial D abundance, and a ten fold improvement in the accuracy of the cosmological density of ordinary matter.This is a high density, with most ordinary matter unaccounted or dark, which is too high to agree with measurements of the primordial abundances of helium-4 and lithium-7. Since the D/H measurement is apparently simple, direct, accurate and highly sensitive, we propose that helium requires a systematic correction, and that population II stars have less than the primordial abundance of $^7$Li. Alternatively, there is no concordance between the light element abundances, and the simple model of the big bang must be incomplete and lacking physics, or wrong.
Primordial Nucleosynthesis in Light of WMAP

Abstract:Big bang nucleosynthesis has long provided the primary determination of the cosmic baryon density $\omb h^2$, or equivalently the baryon-to-photon ratio, \eta. Recently, data on CMB anisotropies have become increasingly sensitive to \eta. The comparison of these two independent measures provides a key test for big bang cosmology. The first release of results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) marks a milestone in this test. With the precision of WMAP, the CMB now offers a significantly stronger constraint on \eta. We discuss the current state of BBN theory and light element observations (including their possible lingering systematic errors). The resulting BBN baryon density prediction is in overall agreement with the WMAP prediction, an important and non-trivial confirmation of hot big bang cosmology. Going beyond this, the powerful CMB baryometer can be used as an input to BBN and one can accurately predict the primordial light element abundances. By comparing these with observations one can obtain new insight into post-BBN nucleosynthesis processes and associated astrophysics. Finally, one can test the possibility of nonstandard physics at the time of BBN, now with all light elements available as probes. Indeed, with the WMAP precision \eta, deuterium is already beginning to rival \he4's sensitivity to nonstandard physics, and additional D/H measurements can improve this further.

Thermonuclear reaction rates and primordial nucleosynthesis

Abstract:Assuming the best numerical value for the cosmic baryonic density and the existence of three neutrino flavors, standard big bang nucleosynthesis is a parameter-free model. It is important to assess if the observed primordial abundances can be reproduced by simulations. Numerous studies have shown that the simulations overpredict the primordial $^7$Li abundance by a factor of $\approx$ $3$ compared to the observations. The discrepancy may be caused by unknown systematics in $^7$Li observations, poorly understood depletion of lithium in stars, errors in thermonuclear rates that take part in the lithium and beryllium synthesis, or physics beyond the standard model. Here, we focus on the likelihood of a nuclear physics solution. The status of the key nuclear reaction rates is summarized. Big bang nucleosynthesis simulations are performed with the most recent reaction rates and the uncertainties of the predicted abundances are established using a Monte Carlo technique. Correlations between abundances and reaction rates are investigated based on the metric of mutual information. The rates of four reactions impact the primordial $^7$Li abundance: $^3$He($\alpha$,$\gamma$)$^7$Be, d(p,$\gamma$)$^3$He, $^7$Be(d,p)2$\alpha$, and $^7$Be(n,p)$^7$Li. We employ a genetic algorithm to search for simultaneous rate changes in these four reactions that may account for all observed primordial abundances. When the search is performed for reaction rate ranges that are much wider than recently reported uncertainties, no acceptable solutions are found. Based on the currently available evidence, we conclude that it is highly unlikely for the cosmological lithium problem to have a nuclear physics solution.

The impact of new d(p,γ)3 rates on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

Abstract:Abstract We consider the effect on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) of new measurements of the d(p,γ) 3 cross section by the LUNA Collaboration. These have an important effect on the primordial abundance of D/H which is also sensitive to the baryon density at the time of BBN. We have re-evaluated the thermal rate for this reaction, using a world average of cross section data, which we describe with model-independent polynomials; our results are in good agreement with a similar analysis by LUNA. We then perform a full likelihood analysis combining BBN and Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) likelihood chains using the new rate combined with previous measurements and compare with the results using previous rates. Concordance between BBN and CMB measurements of the anisotropy spectrum using the old rates was excellent. The predicted deuterium abundance at the Planck value of the baryon density was (D/H) BBN+CMB old = (2.57 ± 0.13) × 10 −5 which can be compared with the value determined from quasar absorption systems (D/H) obs = (2.55 ± 0.03) × 10 −5 . Using the new rates we find (D/H) BBN+CMB = (2.51 ± 0.11) × 10 −5 . We thus find consistency among BBN theory, deuterium and 4 observations, and the CMB, when using reaction rates fit in our data-driven approach. We also find that the new reaction data tightens the constraints on the number of relativistic degrees of freedom during BBN, giving the effective number of light neutrino species N ν = 2.880 ± 0.144 in good agreement with the Standard Model of particle physics. Finally, we note that the observed deuterium abundance continues to be more precise than the BBN+CMB prediction, whose error budget is now dominated by d(d,n) 3 and d(d,p) 3 H. More broadly, it is clear that the details of the treatment of nuclear reactions and their uncertainty have become critical for BBN.

Inhomogeneous Primordial Nucleosynthesis: Coupled Nuclear Reactions and Hydrodynamic Dissipation Processes

Abstract:We present a detailed study of inhomogeneous Big Bang nucleosynthesis where, for the first time, nuclear reactions are coupled to all significant fluctuation dissipation processes. Theses processes include neutrino heat transport, baryon diffusion, photon diffusive heat transport, and hydrodynamic expansion with photon-electron Thomson drag. Light element abundance yields are presented for broad ranges of initial amplitudes and length scales for spherically condensed fluctuations. The $^2$H, $^3$He, $^4$He, and $^7$Li nucleosynthesis yields are found to be inconsistent with observationally inferred primordial abundances for all but very narrow ranges of fluctuation characteristics. Rapid hydrodynamic expansion of fluctuations late in the nucleosynthesis epoch results in significant destruction of $^7$Li ($^7$Be) only if the baryonic conytribution to the closure density ($\Omega_b$) is less than or comparable to the upper limit on this quantity from homogeneous Big Bang nucleosynthesis. This implies that $^7$Li overproduction will peclude an increase on the upper limit for $\Omega_b$ for any inhomogeneous nucleosynthesis scenarios employing spherically condensed fluctuations.

Abstract:We consider the effects of uncertainties in nuclear reaction rates on the cosmological constraints on the decays of unstable particles during or after Big-Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). We identify the nuclear reactions due to non-thermal hadrons that are the most important in perturbing standard BBN, then quantify the uncertainties in these reactions and in the resulting light-element abundances. These results also indicate the key nuclear processes for which improved cross section data would allow different light-element abundances to be determined more accurately, thereby making possible more precise probes of BBN and evaluations of the cosmological constraints on unstable particles. Applying this analysis to models with unstable gravitinos decaying into neutralinos, we calculate the likelihood function for the light-element abundances measured currently, taking into account the current experimental errors in the determinations of the relevant nuclear reaction rates. We find a region of the gravitino mass and abundance in which the abundances of deuterium, He4 and Li7 may be fit with chi^2 = 5.5, compared with chi^2 = 31.7 if the effects of gravitino decays are unimportant. The best-fit solution is improved to chi^2 ~ 2.0 when the lithium abundance is taken from globular cluster data. Some such re-evaluation of the observed light-element abundances and/or nuclear reaction rates would be needed if this region of gravitino parameters is to provide a complete solution to the cosmological Li7 problem.

Abstract:Primordial or Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is one of the three strong evidences for the Big- Bang model together with the expansion of the Universe and the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation. In this study, we improve the standard BBN calculations taking into account new nuclear physics analyses and we enlarge the nuclear network until Sodium. This is, in particular, important to evaluate the primitive value of CNO mass fraction that could affect Population III stellar evolution. For the first time we list the complete network of more than 400 reactions with references to the origin of the rates, including \approx 270 reaction rates calculated using the TALYS code. Together with the cosmological light elements, we calculate the primordial Beryllium, Boron, Carbon, Nitrogen and Oxygen nuclei. We performed a sensitivity study to identify the important reactions for CNO, 9Be and Boron nucleosynthesis. We reevaluated those important reaction rates using experimental data and/or theoretical evaluations. The results are compared with precedent calculations: a primordial Beryllium abundance increase by a factor of 4 compared to its previous evaluation, but we note a stability for B/H and for the CNO/H abundance ratio that remains close to its previous value of 0.7 \times 10-15. On the other hand, the extension of the nuclear network has not changed the 7Li value, so its abundance is still 3-4 times greater than its observed spectroscopic value.

Abstract:Within the first 20 minutes of the evolution of the hot, dense, early Universe, astrophysically interesting abundances of deuterium, helium-3, helium-4, and lithium-7 were synthesized by the cosmic nuclear reactor. The primordial abundances of these light nuclides produced during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) are sensitive to the universal density of baryons and to the early-Universe expansion rate which at early epochs is governed by the energy density in relativistic particles (``radiation'') such as photons and neutrinos. Some 380 kyr later, when the cosmic background radiation (CBR) radiation was freed from the embrace of the ionized plasma of protons and electrons, the spectrum of temperature fluctuations imprinted on the CBR also depended on the baryon and radiation densities. The comparison between the constraints imposed by BBN and those from the CBR reveals a remarkably consistent picture of the Universe at two widely separated epochs in its evolution. Combining these two probes leads to new and tighter constraints on the baryon density at present, on possible new physics beyond the standard model of particle physics, as well as identifying some challenges to astronomy and astrophysics. In this review the current status of BBN will be presented along with the associated estimates of the baryon density and of the energy density in radiation.
Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis on a bubble universe nucleated in Kerr-AdS$_5$ Black Hole

Abstract:We present the Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) simulation with a bubble universe scenario around a rotating black hole (BH) in Kerr-AdS$_5$ spacetime to explain recently updated observations of light elements such as the primordial helium abundance. In this scenario, the geometry of the 4D- early Universe is described as a vacuum bubble that undergoes quasi-de Sitter expansion in Kerr- AdS$_5$ spacetime. We find that the BH mass and spin parameter, which show an anti-correlation against the total radiation, are important to resolve the ${}^4$He anomaly. The present results provide clues to finding a connection between the observed results of light-element nucleosynthesis and the scenario of the 4D-bubble universe in AdS$_5$ spacetimes

Abstract:We investigate the possibility that inhomogeneous nucleosynthesis may eventually be used to explain the abundances of \li6, \be9 and B in population II stars. The present work differs from previous studies in that we have used a more extensive reaction network. It is demonstrated that in the simplest scenario the abundances of the light elements with $A\le7$ constrain the separation of inhomogeneities to sufficiently small scales that the model is indistinguishable from homogeneous nucleosynthesis and that the abundances of \li6, \be9\ and B are then below observations by several orders of magnitude. This conclusion does not depend on the \li7 constraint. We also examine alternative scenarios which involve a post-nucleosynthesis reprocessing of the light elements to reproduce the observed abundances of Li and B, while allowing for a somewhat higher baryon density (still well below the cosmological critical density). Future B/H measurements may be able to exclude even this exotic scenario and further restrict primordial nucleosynthesis to approach the homogeneous model conclusions.
