Abstract:We present a transfer matrix method which is particularly useful for solving some classes of sandpile models. The method is then used to solve the deterministic nonabelian sandpile models for N=2 and N=3. The possibility of generalization to arbitrary N is discussed briefly.

Abstract:We study the abelian sandpile model on a random binary tree. Using a transfer matrix approach introduced by Dhar & Majumdar, we prove exponential decay of correlations, and in a small supercritical region (i.e., where the branching process survives with positive probability) exponential decay of avalanche sizes. This shows a phase transition phenomenon between exponential decay and power law decay of avalanche sizes. Our main technical tools are: (1) A recursion for the ratio between the numbers of weakly and strongly allowed configurations which is proved to have a well-defined stochastic solution; (2) quenched and annealed estimates of the eigenvalues of a product of $n$ random transfer matrices.

Abstract:We introduce and analytically solve a directed sandpile model with stochastic toppling rules. The model clearly belongs to a different universality class from its counterpart with deterministic toppling rules, previously solved by Dhar and Ramaswamy. The critical exponents are D(//)=7/4, tau=10/7 in two dimensions and D(//)=3/2, tau=4/3 in one dimension. The upper critical dimension of the model is three, at which the exponents apart from logarithmic corrections reach their mean-field values D(//)=2, tau=3/2.

Abstract:In the sandpile model, vertices of a graph are allocated grains of sand. At each unit of time, a grain is added to a randomly chosen vertex. If that causes its number of grains to exceed its degree, that vertex is called unstable, and topples. In the Abelian sandpile model (ASM), topplings are deterministic, whereas in the stochastic sandpile model (SSM) they are random. We study the ASM and SSM on complete bipartite graphs. For the SSM, we provide a stochastic version of Dhar's burning algorithm to check if a given (stable) configuration is recurrent or not, with linear complexity. We also exhibit a bijection between sorted recurrent configurations and pairs of compatible Ferrers diagrams. We then provide a similar bijection for the ASM, and also interpret its recurrent configurations in terms of labelled Motzkin paths.

A proof of self-organized criticality in a sandpile

Abstract:Bak, Tang, and Wiesenfeld introduced self-organized criticality with the example of a growing sandpile that reaches then sustains a critical density. They presented the abelian sandpile as a potential model. About a decade later, Dickman, Muñoz, Vespignani, and Zapperi claimed that self-organizing sandpile models share their critical densities with parametrized model versions that have conventional phase transitions. Fey, Levine, and Wilson subsequently demonstrated that this fails to occur with the abelian sandpile model. However, the primary subject of Dickman et al.'s work was stochastic sandpile models, and it was widely speculated that their paradigm might still hold in that setting. To this end, we confirm a conjecture of Levine and Silvestri by providing the first rigorous proof that activated random walk in dimension one is driven directly to a critical density corresponding to a parametrized phase transition and then remains there.

Sandpile model on Scale Free Networks with preferential sand distribution: a new universality class

Abstract:A two state sandpile model with preferential sand distribution is developed and studied numerically on scale free networks with power-law degree ($k$) distribution, {\em i.e.}: $P_k\sim k^{-\alpha}$. In this model, upon toppling of a critical node sand grains are given one to each of the neighbouring nodes with highest and lowest degrees instead of two randomly selected neighbouring nodes as in a stochastic sandpile model. The critical behaviour of the model is determined by characterizing various avalanche properties at the steady state varying the network structure from scale free to random, tuning $\alpha$ from $2$ to $5$. The model exhibits mean field scaling on the random networks, $\alpha>4$. However, in the scale free regime, $2<\alpha<4$, the scaling behaviour of the model not only deviates from the mean-field scaling but also the exponents describing the scaling behaviour are found to decrease continuously as $\alpha$ decreases. In this regime, the critical exponents of the present model are found to be different from those of the two state stochastic sandpile model on similar networks. The preferential sand distribution thus has non-trivial effects on the sandpile dynamics which leads the model to a new universality class.

Abstract:In the single-source sandpile model, a number $N$ grains of sand are positioned at a central vertex on the 2-dimensional grid $\mathbb{Z}^2$. We study the stabilisation of this configuration for a stochastic sandpile model based on a parameter $M \in \mathbb{N}$. In this model, if a vertex has at least $4M$ grains of sand, it topples, sending $k$ grains of sand to each of its four neighbours, where $k$ is drawn according to some random distribution $\gamma$ with support $\{1,\cdots,M\}$. Topplings continue, a new random number $k$ being drawn each time, until we reach a stable configuration where all the vertices have less than $4M$ grains. This model is a slight variant on the one introduced by Kim and Wang. We analyse the stabilisation process described above as $N$ tends to infinity (for fixed $M$), for various probability distributions $\gamma$. We focus on two global parameters of the system, referred to as radius and avalanche numbers. The radius number is the greatest distance from the origin to which grains are sent during the stabilisation, while the avalanche number is the total number of topplings made. Our simulations suggest that both of these numbers have fairly simple asymptotic behaviours as functions of $\gamma$, $N$ and $M$ as $N$ tends to infinity. We also provide a more detailed analysis in the case where $\gamma$ is the binomial distribution with parameter $p$, in particular when $p$ tends to $1$. We exhibit a phase transition in that regime at the scale $p \sim 1/N$.

Abstract:We report the first identification of the Eu III lambda 6666.317 line in optical spectra of CP stars. This line is clearly present in the spectra of HR 4816, 73 Dra, HR 7575, and beta CrB, while it is marginally present or absent in spectra of the roAp stars alpha Cir, gamma Equ, BI Mic, 33 Lib, and HD 24712.

Abstract:Sand pile models are dynamical systems describing the evolution from $N$ stacked grains to a stable configuration. It uses local rules to depict grain moves and iterate it until reaching a fixed configuration from which no rule can be applied. The main interest of sand piles relies in their {\em Self Organized Criticality} (SOC), the property that a small perturbation | adding some sand grains | on a fixed configuration has uncontrolled consequences on the system, involving an arbitrary number of grain fall. Physicists L. Kadanoff {\em et al} inspire KSPM, a model presenting a sharp SOC behavior, extending the well known {\em Sand Pile Model}. In KSPM($D$), we start from a pile of $N$ stacked grains and apply the rule: $D-1$ grains can fall from column $i$ onto the $D-1$ adjacent columns to the right if the difference of height between columns $i$ and $i+1$ is greater or equal to $D$. This paper develops a formal background for the study of KSPM fixed points. This background, resumed in a finite state word transducer, is used to provide a plain formula for fixed points of KSPM(3).

Abstract:Sandpile group or Abelian sandpile model was the first example of a self-organized critical system studied by Bak, Tang and Wiesenfeld. It is well known that these recurrent configurations can be characterized as the optimal solution of certain non-linear optimization problems. We show that recurrent configurations of the Abelian sandpile model of a graph correspond to optimal solutions of some integer linear programs. More precisely, we present two new integer linear programming models, one that computes recurrent configurations and other one that computes the order of the configuration. As an application, we calculate the identity configuration for the cone of a regular graph and the cycle with n+1 vertices using the Weak Duality Theorem in linear programming.

Abstract:The Abelian sandpile model was the first example of a self-organized critical system studied by Bak, Tang and Wiesenfeld. The dynamics of the sandpiles occur when the grains topple over a graph. In this study, we allow the graph to evolve over time and change the topology at each stage. This turns out in the occurrence of phenomena impossible in the classical sandpile models. For instance, configurations over evolutive graphs that are always unstable. We also experiment with the stabilization of configurations with a large number of grains at the center over evolutive graphs, this allows us to obtain interesting fractals. Finally, we obtain some power laws associated with some evolutive graphs.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to conduct a synopsis review of findings from families' experiences related to combat and war events and to interpret these findings from the perspective of theories of suffering. The method used in the study was a synopsis review of 12 articles dealing with family suffering related to war or combat experiences and an interpretation of the articles from a caring science perspective. Findings from the synopsis review were that the dominant part of the articles viewed suffering in general and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) in particular from a medical, psychiatric or psychologically behaviouristic perspective. PTSD and other distress-related conditions were mainly described in terms of their symptoms and dealt with in terms of pathology. The interpretation of the articles from a caring science perspective generated three significant themes: first, interdependence as a spiritual dimension of dependence, secondly, familial communion as sharing moral and spiritual values and thirdly, familial suffering visualized by compassion. The study's conclusion is that, from a caring science perspective, the appearance of family suffering should be comprehended in terms of expressed compassion and that any disturbance within familial communion is likely to have an emotional impact on all of the family members, as a result of their interdependence.
Sandpile cascades on interacting tree-like networks

Abstract:The vulnerability of an isolated network to cascades is fundamentally affected by its interactions with other networks. Motivated by failures cascading among electrical grids, we study the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld sandpile model on two sparsely-coupled random regular graphs. By approximating avalanches (cascades) as a multi-type branching process and using a generalization of Lagrange's expansion to multiple variables, we calculate the distribution of avalanche sizes within each network. Due to coupling, large avalanches in the individual networks are mitigated--in contrast to the conclusion for a simpler model [36]. Yet when compared to uncoupled networks, interdependent networks more frequently suffer avalanches that are large in both networks. Thus sparse connections between networks stabilize them individually but destabilize them jointly, as coupling introduces reservoirs for extra load yet also inflicts new stresses. These results suggest that in practice, to greedily mitigate large avalanches in one network, add connections between networks; conversely, to mitigate avalanches that are large in both networks, remove connections between networks. We also show that when only one network receives load, the largest avalanches in the second network increase in size and in frequency, an effect that is amplified with increased coupling between networks and with increased disparity in total capacity. Our framework is applicable to modular networks as well as to interacting networks and provides building blocks for better prediction of cascading processes on networks in general.

Abstract:SIAM Review, Volume 66, Issue 4, Page 751-777, November 2024. Granular materials are everywhere, in the environment but also in our pantry. Their properties are different from those of any solid material, due to the possibility of sudden phenomena such as avalanches or landslides. Here we present a brief survey on their characteristics and on what can be found (from the past thirty years) in the recent mathematics literature in order to reproduce their behavior. We discuss, in particular, differential models proposed for the growth of a sandpile on a table and, when wind comes into play, for the formation and dynamics of sand dunes. This field of research is still of great interest since there is no consolidated general model for the dynamics of granular matter, but rather only standalone models adapted to specific situations.

Abstract:The theory of a flux steady-state (avalanche) formation is presented for the simplest model of a real sand pile within the framework of Lorenz approach. The stationary values of sand velocity and sand pile slope are derived as functions of controlling parameter (externally driven sandpile slope). The additive noises of above values are taken into account to build the phase diagram, where the noise intensities determine a domain of the avalanche appearance. This domain shows to be crucial to the noise intensity of vertical component of sand velocity.

Abstract:The stochastic sandpile model (SSM) is a generalisation of the standard Abelian sandpile model (ASM), in which topplings of unstable vertices are made random. When unstable, a vertex sends one grain to each of its neighbours independently with probability $p \in (0,1)$. We study the SSM on complete graphs. Our main result is a description of the recurrent states of the model. We show that these are given by convex sums of recurrent states for the ASM. This allows us to recover a well-known result: that the number of integer lattice points in the $n$-dimensional permutation polytope is equal to the number of labeled spanning forests on $n$ vertices. We also provide a stochastic version of Dhar's burning algorithm to check if a given (stable) state is recurrent or not, which runs in linear time. Finally, we study a family of so-called "partial" SSMs, in which some vertices topple randomly, while others topple deterministically (as in the ASM, sending one grain to all neighbours). We show that this distinction is meaningful, yielding sets of recurrent states that are in general different from those of both the ASM and SSM. We also show that to get all recurrent states of the SSM, we can allow up to two vertices to topple deterministically.

Abstract:In a recent paper E. Formenti and K. Perrot (FP) introduce a global rule assumed to describe the discrete time dynamics associated with a sandpile model under the parallel application of a suitable local rule acting on d dimensional lattices of cells equipped with uniform neighborhood. In this paper we submit this approach to a critical analysis, in the simplest elementary particular case of a one-dimensional lattice, which can be divided in two parts. In the first part we prove that the FP global rule does not describe the dynamics of standard sandpiles, but rather furnishes a description of the quite different situation of height difference between consecutive piles. This is a semantic uncorrect difference of interpretation. In the second part we investigate the consequences of the uncorrect FP assumption proving that their global rule describes a bidirectional spurious dynamics of icepiles (rather than sandpiles), in the sense that this latter is the consequence of application of three local rules: bidirectional vertical rule, bidirectional horizontal rule (typical of icepiles), and a granule jump from the bottom to the top (spurious rule of the dynamics).

Abstract:The aim of the current work is to investigate structural properties of the sandpile group of a special class of self-similar graphs. More precisely, we consider Abelian sandpiles on Sierpiński gasket graphs and, for the choice of normal boundary conditions, we give a characterization of the identity element and a recursive description of the sandpile group. Finally, we consider Abelian sandpile Markov chains on the aforementioned graphs and we improve the existing bounds on the speed of convergence to stationarity.
