Abstract:Conversational implicatures are usually described as being licensed by the disobeying or flouting of some principle by the speaker in cooperative dialogue. However, such work has failed to distinguish cases of the speaker flouting such a principle from cases where the speaker is either deceptive or holds a mistaken belief. In this paper, we demonstrate how the three different cases can be distinguished in terms of the beliefs ascribed to the speaker of the utterance. We argue that in the act of distinguishing the speaker's intention and ascribing such beliefs, the intended inference can be made by the hearer. This theory is implemented in ViewGen, a pre-existing belief modelling system used in a medical counselling domain.

Abstract:We start this work by revisiting the problem of the soldering of two chiral Schwinger models of opposite chiralities. We verify that, in contrast with what one can conclude from the soldering literature, the usual sum of these models is, in fact, gauge invariant and corresponds to a composite model, where the component models are the vector and axial Schwinger models. As a consequence, we reinterpret this formalism as a kind of degree of freedom reduction mechanism. This result has led us to discover a second soldering possibility giving rise to the axial Schwinger model. This new result is seemingly rather general. We explore it here in the soldering of two Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories with different masses.

Bosonisation and Soldering of Dual Symmetries in Two and Three Dimensions

Abstract:We develop a technique that solders the dual aspects of some symmetry following from the bosonisation of two distinct fermionic models, thereby leading to new results which cannot be otherwise obtained. Exploiting this technique, the two dimensional chiral determinants with opposite chirality are soldered to reproduce either the usual gauge invariant expression leading to the Schwinger model or, alternatively, the Thirring model. Likewise, two apparently independent three dimensional massive Thirring models with same coupling but opposite mass signatures, in the long wavelegth limit, combine by the process of bosonisation and soldering to yield an effective massive Maxwell theory. The current bosonisation formulas are given, both in the original independent formulation as well as the effective theory, and shown to yield consistent results for the correlation functions. Similar features also hold for quantum electrodynamics in three dimensions.

Abstract:In two dimensions the simple addition of two chiral bosons of opposite chiralities does not lead to a full massless scalar field. Similarly, in three dimensions the addition of two Maxwell-Chern-Simons fields of opposite helicities $\pm 1$ will not produce a parity invariant Maxwell-Proca theory. An interference term between the opposite chiralities (helicities) states is required in order to obtain the expected result. The so called soldering procedure provides the missing interference Lagrangian in both 2D and 3D cases. In two dimensions such interference term allows to fuse two chiral fermionic determinants into a nonchiral one. In a recent work we have generalized this procedure by allowing the appearance of an extra parameter which takes two possible values and leads to two different soldered Lagrangians. Here we apply this generalized soldering in a bosonic theory which has appeared in a partial bosonization of the 3D gauged Thirring with $N$ flavors. The multiplicity of flavors allow new types of solderings and help us to understand the connection between different perturbative approaches to bosonization in 3D. In particular, we obtain an interference term which takes us from a multiflavor Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory to a pair of self-dual and anti-self-dual theories when we combine together both fermionic determinants of +1/2 and -1/2 helicity fermions. An important role is played by a set of pure non-interacting Chern-Simons fields which amount to a normalization factor in the fermionic determinants and act like spectators in the original theory but play an active role in the soldering procedure. Our results suggest that the generalized soldering could be used to provide dual theories in both 2D and 3D cases.

Abstract:We develop a technique that solders the dual aspects of some symmetry. Using this technique it is possible to combine two theories with such symmetries to yield a new effective theory. Some applications in two and three dimensional bosonisation are discussed. In particular, it is shown that two apparently independent three dimensional massive Thirring models with same coupling but opposite mass signatures, in the long wavelegth limit, combine by the process of bosonisation and soldering to yield an effective massive Maxwell theory. Similar features also hold for quantum electrodynamics in three dimensions. We also provide a systematic derivation of duality symmetric actions and show that the soldering mechanism leads to a master action which is duality invariant under a bigger set of symmetries than is usually envisaged. The concept of duality swapping is introduced and its implications are analysed. The example of electromagnetic duality is discussed in details.

Soldering Formalism in Noncommutative Field Theory: A Brief Note

Abstract:In this paper, I develop the Soldering formalism in a new domain - the noncommutative planar field theories. The Soldering mechanism fuses two distinct theories showing opposite or complimentary properties of some symmetry, taking into account the interference effects. The above mentioned symmetry is hidden in the composite (or soldered) theory. In the present work it is shown that a pair of noncommutative Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories, having opposite signs in their respective topological terms, can be consistently soldered to yield the Proca model (Maxwell theory with a mass term) with corrections that are at least quadratic in the noncommutativity parameter. We further argue that this model can be thought of as the noncommutative generalization of the Proca theory of ordinary spacetime. It is well-known that abelian noncommutative gauge theory bears a close structural similarity with non-abelian gauge theory. This fact is manifested in a non-trivial way if the present work is compared with existing literature, where soldering of non-abelian models are discussed. Thus the present work further establishes the robustness of the soldering programme. The subtle role played by gauge invariance, (or the lack of it), in the above soldering process, is revealed in an interesting way.

Abstract:Chiral bosons, or self-dual p-form fields, are ubiquitous in string theoretic contexts but are challenging to treat. Lagrangian constructions invariably introduce a complexity be it auxiliary fields or sacrificing Lorentz invariance. In this note we show how to pass between such different approaches to chiral bosons starting from a Chern Simons point of view to recover formulations of Pasti, Sorokin and Tonin and of Mkrtchyan. This leads to a novel generalisation of the latter to include non-Abelian chiral bosons in 2-dimensions, and generalisations to include twisted self-duality which are relevant in T-duality symmetric approaches to string theory. Our approach also shows how global affine symmetries of two- and higher-dimensional chiral bosons emerge from broken Chern-Simons gauge transformations on the boundary.

Chiral Phase Transition and Schwinger Mechanism in a Pure Electric Field

Abstract:We systematically study the chiral symmetry breaking and restoration in the presence of a pure electric field in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential. In addition, we also study the effect of the chiral phase transition on the charged pair production due to the Schwinger mechanism. For these purposes, a general formalism for parallel electric and magnetic fields is developed at finite temperature and chemical potential for the first time. In the pure electric field limit B -> 0, we compute the order parameter, the transverse-to-longitudinal ratio of the Goldstone mode velocities, and the Schwinger pair production rate as functions of the electric field. The inverse catalysis effect of the electric field to chiral symmetry breaking is recovered. And the Goldstone mode is found to disperse anisotropically such that the transverse velocity is always smaller than the longitudinal one, especially at nonzero temperature and baryon chemical potential. As expected, the quark-pair production rate is greatly enhanced by the chiral symmetry restoration.

Abstract:The soldering procedure has been for the first time generalized to the case of spin-3/2 fermionic theories. We have demonstrated that the fermionic part of the so called "New Topologically Massive Supergravity" theory, which is of third order in derivatives, can be soldered in order to obtain a fourth order dublet model analogue to the linearized version of the New Massive Gravity theory, while the soldering of two second order self-dual models give us a theory similar to the linearized version of the Einstein-Hilbert-Fierz-Pauli theory.

Abstract:We present a first principles study of chiral plasma instabilities and axial charge transfer in non-Abelian plasmas with a strong gauge-matter coupling $g^2N_f=64$, by performing $3+1$ D real-time classical-statistical lattice simulation with dynamical fermions. We explicitly demonstrate for the first time that -- unlike in an Abelian plasma -- the transfer of chirality from the matter sector to the gauge fields occurs predominantly due to topological sphaleron transitions. We elaborate on the similarities and differences of the axial charge dynamics in cold Abelian $U(1)$ and non-Abelian $SU(2)$ plasmas, and comment on the implications of our findings for the study of anomalous transport phenomena, such as the chiral magnetic effect in QCD matter.

Abstract:Recent experiments on ultracold atoms in optical lattices have synthesized a variety of tunable bands with degenerate double-well structures in momentum space. Such degeneracies in the single particle spectrum strongly enhance quantum fluctuations, and may lead to exotic many-body ground states. Here we consider weakly interacting spinor Bose gases in such bands, and discover a universal quantum "order by disorder" phenomenon which selects a novel chiral spin superfluid with remarkable properties such as spontaneous anomalous spin Hall effect and momentum space antiferromagnetism. For bosons in the excited Dirac band of a hexagonal lattice, such a state supports staggered spin loop currents in real space. We show that Bloch oscillations provide a powerful dynamical route to quantum state preparation of such a chiral spin superfluid. Our predictions can be readily tested in spin resolved time-of-flight experiments.

The analysis is referred to as the stability analysis of the symmetric phase and does not require knowledge about spatial modulations of condensates. We perform this analysis in the infinite-$N$ limit at nonzero temperature and nonzero quark and chiral chemical potentials also inside the inhomogeneous phase. Thereby we observe an interesting relation between the bosonic $1$-particle irreducible two-point vertex function of the chiral Gross-Neveu model and the spinodal line of the Gross-Neveu model.

Abstract:The chiral susceptibility is given by the scalar vacuum polarization at zero total momentum. This follows directly from the expression for the vacuum quark condensate so long as a nonperturbative symmetry preserving truncation scheme is employed. For QCD in-vacuum the susceptibility can rigorously be defined via a Pauli-Villars regularization procedure. Owing to the scalar Ward identity, irrespective of the form or Ansatz for the kernel of the gap equation, the consistent scalar vertex at zero total momentum can automatically be obtained and hence the consistent susceptibility. This enables calculation of the chiral susceptibility for markedly different vertex Ansatze. For the two cases considered, the results were consistent and the minor quantitative differences easily understood. The susceptibility can be used to demarcate the domain of coupling strength within a theory upon which chiral symmetry is dynamically broken. Degenerate massless scalar and pseudoscalar bound-states appear at the critical coupling for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking.
Fate of chiral symmetry in Riemann-Cartan geometry

Abstract:We study the mechanism of chiral symmetry breaking for fermionic systems in a gravitational background with curvature and torsion. The analysis is based on a scale-dependent effective potential derived from a bosonized version of the Nambu-Jona-Lasino model in a Riemann-Cartan background. We have investigated the fate of chiral symmetry in two different regimes. First, to gain some intuition on the combined effect of curvature and torsion, we investigate the regime of weak curvature and torsion. However, this regime does not access the deep infrared limit, which is essential to answer questions related to the mechanism of gravitational catalysis in fermionic systems. Second, we look at the regime of vanishing curvature and homogeneous torsion. In this case, although we cannot probe the combined effects of curvature and torsion, we can access the deep infrared contributions of the background torsion to the mechanism of chiral symmetry breaking. Our main finding is that, in the scenario where only torsion is present, there is no indication of a mechanism of gravitational catalysis.

Abstract:Chirality represents a kind of symmetry breaking characterized by the noncoincidence of an object with its mirror image and has been attracting intense attention in a broad range of scientific areas. The recent realization of spin-orbit coupling in ultracold atomic gases provides a new perspective to study quantum states with chirality. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the combined effects of spin-orbit coupling and interatomic soft-core long-range interaction can induce an exotic supersolid phase in which the chiral symmetry is broken with spontaneous emergence of circulating particle current. This implies that a finite angular momentum can be generated with neither rotation nor effective magnetic field. The direction of the angular momentum can be altered by adjusting the strength of spin-orbit coupling or interatomic interaction. The predicted chiral supersolid phase can be experimentally observed in Rydberg-dressed Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit coupling.
Gravitational Origin of the Weak Interaction's Chirality

Abstract:We present a new unification of the electroweak and gravitational interactions based on joining the weak SU(2) gauge fields with the left-handed part of the space-time connection, into a single gauge field valued in the complexification of the local Lorentz group. Hence, the weak interactions emerge as the right-handed chiral half of the space-time connection, which explains the chirality of the weak interaction. This is possible, because, as shown by Plebanski, Ashtekar, and others, the other chiral half of the space-time connection is enough to code the dynamics of the gravitational degrees of freedom. This unification is achieved within an extension of the Plebanski action previously proposed by one of us. The theory has two phases. A parity symmetric phase yields, as shown by Speziale, a bimetric theory with 8 degrees of freedom: the massless graviton, a massive spin-2 field and a scalar ghost. Because of the latter this phase is unstable. Parity is broken in a stable phase where the 8 degrees of freedom arrange themselves as the massless graviton coupled to an SU(2) triplet of chirally coupled Yang-Mills fields. It is also shown that under this breaking a Dirac fermion expresses itself as a chiral neutrino paired with a scalar field with the quantum numbers of the Higgs.
Chiral symmetry breaking and quark confinement in the nilpotency expansion of QCD

Abstract:We apply to lattice QCD a bosonization method previously developed in which dynamical bosons are generated by time-dependent Bogoliubov transformations. The transformed action can be studied by an expansion in the inverse of the nilpotency index, which is the number of fermionic states in the structure function of composite bosons. When this number diverges the model is solved by the saddle point method which has a variational interpretation. We give a stationary covariant solution for a background matter field whose fluctuations describe mesons. In the saddle point approximations live fermionic quasiparticles with quark quantum numbers which are confined, in the sense that they propagate only in pointlike color singlets. Conditions for chiral symmetry breaking are determined, to be studied numerically, and a derivation of mesons-nucleons action is outlined.
