Abstract:Summary form only given. Strong light-atom interaction is at the heart of atomic, molecular and optical physics; and is also important to quantum optics, quantum computing, nuclear magnetic resonance and laser. When an atom (or two-level system) is illuminated by a coherent beam of photons, it will cyclically absorb photons and re-emit them by stimulated emission, which is called Rabi oscillation. Here we developed a semiclassical framework to model the phenomenon via a self-consistent solution to Maxwell-Schrödinger equations. Different from Maxwell-Bloch equations, the wave function of the atom replacing for the density matrix nonlinearly interacts with the magnetic vector potential under coulomb gauge condition. A well-posed time evolution system derived from light-atom Hamiltonian is numerically solved by finite-difference time-domain method. The developed semiclassical Maxwell-Schrödinger framework could be generalized to model light-exciton interaction in semiconductor nanostructures.

Abstract:The optical properties of a fixed atom are well-known and investigated. For example, the extraordinarily large cross section of a single atom as seen by a resonant photon is essential for quantum optical applications. Mechanical effects associated with light scattering are also well-studied, forming the basis of laser cooling and trapping, for example. Despite this, there is one fundamental problem that surprisingly has not been extensively studied, yet is relevant to a number of emerging quantum optics experiments. In these experiments, the ground state of the atom experiences a tight optical trap formed by far-off-resonant light, to facilitate efficient interactions with near-resonant light. However, the excited state might experience a different potential, or even be anti-trapped. Here, we systematically analyze the effects of unequal trapping on near-resonant atom-light interactions. In particular, we identify regimes where such trapping can lead to significant excess heating, and a reduction of total and elastic scattering cross sections associated with a decreased atom-photon interaction efficiency. Understanding these effects can be valuable for optimizing quantum optics platforms where efficient atom-light interactions on resonance are desired, but achieving equal trapping is not feasible.

Abstract:We present a theoretical analysis of a novel scheme for optical cooling of particles that does not in principle require a closed optical transition. A tightly confined laser beam interacting with a trapped particle experiences a phase shift, which upon reflection from a mirror or resonant microstructure produces a time-delayed optical potential for the particle. This leads to a nonconservative force and friction. A quantum model of the system is presented and analyzed in the semiclassical limit.

Optical cooling and trapping of highly magnetic atoms : the benefits of a spontaneous spin polarization

Abstract:From the study of long-range-interacting systems to the simulation of gauge fields, open-shell lanthanide atoms with their large magnetic moment and narrow optical transitions open novel directions in the field of ultracold quantum gases. As for other atomic species, the magnetooptical trap (MOT) is the working horse of experiments but its operation is challenging, due to the large electronic spin of the atoms. Here we present an experimental study of narrow-line dysprosium MOTs. We show that the combination of radiation pressure and gravitational forces leads to a spontaneous polarization of the electronic spin. The spin composition is measured using a Stern–Gerlach separation of spin levels, revealing that the gas becomes almost fully spinpolarized for large laser frequency detunings. In this regime, we reach the optimal operation of the MOT, with samples of typically 3 108 ́ atoms at a temperature of 15 μK. The spin polarization reduces the complexity of the radiative cooling description, which allows for a simple model accounting for our measurements. We also measure the rate of density-dependent atom losses, finding good agreement with a model based on light-induced Van der Waals forces. A minimal two-body loss rate 2 10 11 b ~ ́ cm s is reached in the spin-polarized regime. Our results constitute a benchmark for the experimental study of ultracold gases of magnetic lanthanide atoms.
A Generalized Theory for Optical Cooling of a Trapped Atom with Spin

Abstract:Cooling atoms to the ground-state of optical tweezers is becoming increasingly important for high-fidelity imaging, cooling, and molecular assembly. While extensive theoretical work has been conducted on cooling in free space, fewer studies have focused on cooling in bound states. In this work, we present a unified formalism for optical cooling mechanisms in neutral atom tweezers, including resolved and unresolved sideband cooling with different trapping potentials, polarization gradient cooling, gray molasses cooling, $\Lambda$-enhanced gray molasses cooling, and Raman sideband cooling. We perform simulations and demonstrate good agreement with a simplified spin model. We derive and discuss the fundamental limits of each cooling mechanism and propose new strategies for achieving ground-state cooling in optical tweezers. Our findings provide valuable insights into optimizing cooling schemes for neutral atoms in optical tweezers, paving the way for minimizing thermal decoherence in Rydberg and molecular gates and improving efficiencies of molecular assembly.

Abstract:We study the coherent scattering of weak light from a system of cooled bosonic atoms in a trap. We derive and discuss in detail the scattering equation for such a process that describes multiple scatterings from different atoms. Our theory accounts for atom-atom interactions and determines the density profile of the atomic fields from the self-consistent Bogoliubov-Hartree method. We present two kinds of analytic solutions to the scattering equation using the on-shell approximation and the generalized diffraction theory. We discuss the validity of those approaches, and demonstrate that they both lead to similar results. Our studies indicate that the scattering cross sections exhibit non-lorentzian shapes with narrow features close to resonance. Coherent scattering occurs mainly in the forward direction, and the angular distribution is limited by the size of the atomic sample in the trap. We present results for various ranges of relevant parameters such as trap size, interaction strength, number of atoms, and temperature, etc.
Interactions of Ions and Ultracold Neutral Atom Ensembles in Composite Optical Dipole Traps: Developments and Perspectives

Abstract:Ion-atom interactions are a comparatively recent field of research that has drawn considerable attention due to its applications in areas including quantum chemistry and quantum simulations. In first experiments, atomic ions and neutral atoms have been successfully overlapped by devising hybrid apparatuses combining established trapping methods, Paul traps for ions and optical or magneto-optical traps for neutral atoms, respectively. Since then, the field has seen considerable progress, but the inherent presence of radiofrequency (rf) fields in such hybrid traps was found to have a limiting impact on the achievable collision energies. Recently, it was shown that suitable combinations of optical dipole traps (ODTs) can be used for trapping both atoms and atomic ions alike, allowing to carry out experiments in absence of any rf fields. Here, we show that the expected cooling in such bichromatic traps is highly sensitive to relative position fluctuations between the two optical trapping beams, suggesting that this is the dominant mechanism limiting the currently observed cooling performance. We discuss strategies for mitigating these effects by using optimized setups featuring adapted ODT configurations. This includes proposed schemes that may mitigate three-body losses expected at very low temperatures, allowing to access the quantum dominated regime of interaction.

Abstract:The strong evanescent field around ultra-thin unclad optical fibers bears a high potential for detecting, trapping, and manipulating cold atoms. Introducing such a fiber into a cold atom cloud, we investigate the interaction of a small number of cold Caesium atoms with the guided fiber mode and with the fiber surface. Using high resolution spectroscopy, we observe and analyze light-induced dipole forces, van der Waals interaction, and a significant enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate of the atoms. The latter can be assigned to the modification of the vacuum modes by the fiber.
Nonconservative forcing and diffusion in refractive optical traps

Abstract:Refractive optical trapping forces can be nonconservative in the vicinity of a stable equilibrium point even in the absence of radiation pressure. We discuss how nonconservative 3D force fields, in the vicinity of an equilibrium point, reduce to circular forcing in a plane; a simple model of such forcing is the refractive trapping of a sphere by a four rays. We discuss in general the diffusion of an anisotropically trapped, circularly forced particle and obtain its spectrum of motion. Equipartition of potential energy holds even though the nonconservative flow does not follow equipotentials of the trap. We find that the dissipated nonconservative power is proportional to temperature, providing a mechanism for a runaway heating instability in traps.

Abstract:We investigate the scattering of intense short laser pulses off trapped cold fermionic atoms. We discuss the sensitivity of the scattered light to the quantum statistics of the atoms. The temperature dependence of the scattered light spectrum is calculated. Comparisons are made with a system of classical atoms that obey Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics. We find the total scattering increases as the fermions become cooler but eventually tails off at very low temperatures (far below the Fermi temperature). At these low temperatures the fermionic degeneracy plays an important role in the scattering, as it inhibits spontaneous emission into occupied energy levels below the Fermi surface. We demonstrate that temperature dependent qualitative changes in the differential and total spectrum can be utilized to probe the quantum degeneracy of a trapped Fermi gas when the total number of atoms is sufficiently large (greater than or equal to 10 degrees). At smaller numbers of atoms, incoherent scattering dominates and it displays weak temperature dependence.
The Mass-Luminosity Relation in AGN

Abstract:Probably the most fundamental characteristic of the quasar-AGN power house, the mass of the central black hole, is the least well known. I review the three main classes of mass estimation methods---broad emission-line kinematics, X-ray variability and accretion-disk modeling, and the masses they give in terms of the Eddington ratio, $L/L_{\rm Edd}$. The broad emission lines are probably the best probe of the central mass. They provide mass estimates that suggest a narrow spread for the Eddington ratio - 1--2 orders of magnitude over more than six orders of magnitude in continuum luminosity, possibly indicating a universal $M/L$ ratio for AGN. However, other methods give a larger spread and possibly a luminosity- dependent Eddington ratio. Potential sources of errors and bias are discussed.

Manipulating scattering of ultracold atoms with light-induced dissipation

Abstract:Recently it has been shown that pairs of atoms can form metastable bonds due to non-conservative forces induced by dissipation [Lemeshko&Weimer, Nature Comm. 4, 2230 (2013)]. Here we study the dynamics of interaction-induced coherent population trapping - the process responsible for the formation of dissipatively bound molecules. We derive the effective dissipative potentials induced between ultracold atoms by laser light, and study the time evolution of the scattering states. We demonstrate that binding occurs on short timescales of ~10 microseconds, even if the initial kinetic energy of the atoms significantly exceeds the depth of the dissipative potential. Dissipatively-bound molecules with preordained bond lengths and vibrational wavefunctions can be created and detected in current experiments with ultracold atoms.

Abstract:A near-minimal instance of optical cooling is experimentally presented wherein the internal-state entropy of a single atom is reduced more than twofold by illuminating it with broadband, incoherent light. Since the rate of optical pumping by a thermal state increases monotonically with its temperature, the cooling power in this scenario increases with higher thermal occupation, an example of a phenomenon known as cooling by heating. In contrast to optical pumping by coherent, narrow-band laser light, here we perform the same task with fiber-coupled, broadband sunlight, the brightest laboratory-accessible source of continuous blackbody radiation.

Abstract:We discuss theoretical foundations of the emerging area of quantum-optical studies of many-body systems: a quantum field theory of atoms interacting with photons. This theory is designed to describe quantum-statistical systems of cooled and trapped atoms undergoing spontaneous and stimulated emission processes. Formulated in the framework of the second quantization, this theory accounts fully for quantum-statistical properties of atoms as bosons or fermions. In particular, it applies to a description of the formation of the Bose-Einstein condensate in bosonic systems, as well as the spectroscopy and other quantum optical properties of the Bose-Einstein condensate. We derive the general second quantized Hamiltonian of this theory and discuss in detail various approximations.
Atomic transport dynamics in crossed optical dipole trap

Abstract:We study the dynamical evolution of cold atoms in crossed optical dipole trap theoretically and experimentally. The atomic transport process is accompanied by two competitive kinds of physical mechanics, atomic loading and atomic loss. The loading process normally is negligible in the evaporative cooling experiment on the ground, while it is significant in the preparation of ultra-cold atoms in the space station. Normally, the atomic loading process is much weaker than the atomic loss process, and the atomic number in the center region of the trap decreases monotonically, as reported in previous research. However, when the atomic loading process is comparable to the atomic loss process, the atomic number in the center region of the trap will initially increase to a maximum value and then slowly decrease, and we have observed the phenomenon first. The increase of atomic number in the center region of the trap shows the presence of the loading process, and this will be significant especially under microgravity conditions. We build a theoretical model to analyze the competitive relationship, which coincides with the experimental results well. Furthermore, we have also given the predicted evolutionary behaviors under different conditions. This research provides a solid foundation for further understanding of the atomic transport process in traps. The analysis of loading process is of significant importance for the preparation of ultra-cold atoms in a crossed optical dipole trap under microgravity conditions.

Abstract:This article reviews recent experimental and theoretical progress on many-body phenomena in dilute, ultracold gases. Its focus are effects beyond standard weak-coupling descriptions, like the Mott-Hubbard-transition in optical lattices, strongly interacting gases in one and two dimensions or lowest Landau level physics in quasi two-dimensional gases in fast rotation. Strong correlations in fermionic gases are discussed in optical lattices or near Feshbach resonances in the BCS-BEC crossover.
