Abstract:Trapped ultracold Fermi gases provide a system that can be tuned between the BCS and Bose-Einstein condensation regimes by means of a magnetic-field Feshbach resonance. Condensation of fermionic atom pairs in a K-40 gas was demonstrated experimentally by a sweep technique that pairwise projects fermionic atoms onto molecules. In this paper, we examine previous data obtained with this technique that probed the phase boundary in the temperature-magnetic field plane. Comparison of the K-40 data to a theoretically computed phase diagram demonstrates good agreement between the two.

Abstract:In this course we give a selfcontained introduction to the quantum field theory for trapped atomic gases, using functional methods throughout. We consider both equilibrium and nonequilibrium phenomena. In the equilibrium case, we first derive the appropriate Hartree-Fock theory for the properties of the gas in the normal phase. We then turn our attention to the properties of the gas in the superfluid phase, and present a microscopic derivation of the Bogoliubov and Popov theories of Bose-Einstein condensation and the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity. The former are applicable to trapped bosonic gases such as rubidium, lithium, sodium and hydrogen, and the latter in particular to the fermionic isotope of atomic lithium. In the nonequilibrium case, we discuss various topics for which a field-theoretical approach is especially suited, because they involve physics that is not contained in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Examples are quantum kinetic theory, the growth and collapse of a Bose condensate, the phase dynamics of bosonic and fermionic superfluids, and the collisionless collective modes of a Bose gas below the critical temperature.

Optical cooling and trapping of highly magnetic atoms : the benefits of a spontaneous spin polarization

Abstract:From the study of long-range-interacting systems to the simulation of gauge fields, open-shell lanthanide atoms with their large magnetic moment and narrow optical transitions open novel directions in the field of ultracold quantum gases. As for other atomic species, the magnetooptical trap (MOT) is the working horse of experiments but its operation is challenging, due to the large electronic spin of the atoms. Here we present an experimental study of narrow-line dysprosium MOTs. We show that the combination of radiation pressure and gravitational forces leads to a spontaneous polarization of the electronic spin. The spin composition is measured using a Stern–Gerlach separation of spin levels, revealing that the gas becomes almost fully spinpolarized for large laser frequency detunings. In this regime, we reach the optimal operation of the MOT, with samples of typically 3 108 ́ atoms at a temperature of 15 μK. The spin polarization reduces the complexity of the radiative cooling description, which allows for a simple model accounting for our measurements. We also measure the rate of density-dependent atom losses, finding good agreement with a model based on light-induced Van der Waals forces. A minimal two-body loss rate 2 10 11 b ~ ́ cm s is reached in the spin-polarized regime. Our results constitute a benchmark for the experimental study of ultracold gases of magnetic lanthanide atoms.

Abstract:We calculate the entropy in a trapped, resonantly interacting Fermi gas as a function of temperature for a wide range of magnetic fields between the BCS and Bose-Einstein condensation end points. This provides a basis for the important technique of adiabatic sweep thermometry and serves to characterize quantitatively the evolution and nature of the excitations of the gas. The results are then used to calibrate the temperature in several ground breaking experiments on Li-6 and K-40.

Abstract:We study the superfluid transition in a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi gas with a magnetic field tuning through a Feshbach resonance. Using an effective two-dimensional Hamiltonian with renormalized interaction between atoms and dressed molecules, we investigate the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature by studying the phase fluctuation effect. We also take into account the trapping potential in the radial plane, and discuss the number and superfluid density distributions. These results can be compared to experimental outcomes for gases prepared in one-dimensional optical lattices.
Spin-orbit-coupled topological Fulde-Ferrell states of fermions in a harmonic trap

Abstract:Motivated by recent experimental breakthroughs in generating spin-orbit coupling in ultracold Fermi gases using Raman laser beams, we present a systematic study of spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases confined in a quasi-one-dimensional trap in the presence of an in-plane Zeeman field (which can be realized using a finite two-photon Raman detuning). We find that a topological Fulde-Ferrell state will emerge, featuring finite-momentum Cooper pairing and zero-energy Majorana excitations localized near the edge of the trap based on the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Genes (BdG) equations. We find analytically the wavefunctions of the Majorana modes. Finally using the time-dependent BdG we show how the finite-momentum pairing field manifests itself in the expansion dynamics of the atomic cloud.

Abstract:Recent experimental breakthroughs in trapping, cooling and controlling ultracold gases of polar molecules, magnetic and Rydberg atoms have paved the way toward the investigation of highly tunable quantum systems, where anisotropic, long-range dipolar interactions play a prominent role at the many-body level. In this article we review recent theoretical studies concerning the physics of such systems. Starting from a general discussion on interaction design techniques and microscopic Hamiltonians, we provide a summary of recent work focused on many-body properties of dipolar systems, including: weakly interacting Bose gases, weakly interacting Fermi gases, multilayer systems, strongly interacting dipolar gases and dipolar gases in 1D and quasi-1D geometries. Within each of these topics, purely dipolar effects and connections with experimental realizations are emphasized.

Fermionic quantum mixtures with tunable interactions

Abstract:The topic of the present lecture notes are two-species quantum mixtures composed of a deeply degenerate Fermi gas and a second component, the latter being fermionic or bosonic. A key ingredient is the possibility to tune the $s$-wave interaction between the different species by means of magnetically controlled Feshbach resonances, which allow us to investigate regimes of strong interactions. In two case studies, we review our experiments on mixtures of $^6$Li fermions with fermionic $^{40}$K or bosonic $^{41}$K atoms and on mixtures of fermionic $^{161}$Dy with $^{40}$K atoms. We cover various topics of fermionic quantum many-body physics, ranging from impurity physics and quasiparticles over phase separation to the formation of ultracold molecules and progress towards novel superfluids.

Abstract:The pairing and superfluid phenomena in a two-component Fermi gas can be strongly affected by the population and mass imbalances. Here we present phase diagrams of an atomic Fermi-Fermi mixture as they undergo BCS-Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover using a pairing fluctuation theory. We focus on the finite temperature and trap effects, with an emphasis on the mixture of Li-6 and K-40. We show that there exist exotic types of phase separation in the (near-)BEC regime, associated with a pseudogap effect. Moreover, in the BCS and unitary regimes, the spatial density and gap profiles exhibit sandwichlike shell structures with superfluid or pseudogapped normal state in the middle shell. Such a sandwichlike shell structure appears when the mass imbalance increases beyond a certain threshold. Abstract:We consider a gas of noninteracting spinless fermions in a rotating optical lattice and calculate the density profile of the gas in an external confinement potential. The density profile exhibits distinct plateaus, which correspond to gaps in the single particle spectrum known as the Hofstadter butterfly. The plateaus result from insulating behavior whenever the Fermi energy lies within a gap. We discuss the necessary conditions to realize the Hofstadter insulator in a cold atom setup and show how the quantized Hall conductance can be measured from density profiles using the Streda formula.

Abstract:The Bose-Einstein condensates recently created in trapped atomic gases are mesoscopic systems, in two senses: (a) Their size fall between macroscopic and microscopic systems; (b) They have a quantum phase that can be manipulated in experiments. We review the theoretical and experimental facts about trapped atomic gases, and give examples that emphasize their mesoscopic characters. One is the dynamics of collapse of a condensate with attractive interactions. The other is the creation of a 1D kink soliton that can be used as a mode-locked atom laser.

Abstract:By applying the recently proposed antisymmetric superfluid local density approximation (ASLDA) to strongly interacting polarized atomic gases at unitarity in very elongated traps, we find families of solutions of the Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) type with prominent transversal oscillation of the pairing potential. These LO states coexist with a superfluid state having a smooth pairing potential. We suggest that the LO phase could be accessible experimentally by increasing the trap aspect ratio adiabatically. We show that the local asymmetry effects contained in the ASLDA do not support a deformed superfluid core predicted by previous Bogoliubov-de Gennes treatments.

Abstract:In a trapped atomic Fermi gas, one can tune continuously via a Feshbach resonance the effective pairing interaction between fermionic atoms from very weak to very strong. As a consequence, the low temperature superfluidity evolves continuously from the BCS type in the weak interaction limit to that of Bose-Einstein condensation in the strong pairing limit, exhibiting a BCS-BEC crossover. In this paper, we review recent experimental progress in atomic Fermi gases which elucidates the nature of the superfluid phase as the interaction is continuously tuned. Of particular interest is the intermediate or crossover regime where the $s$-wave scattering length diverges. We will present an intuitive pairing fluctuation theory, and show that this theory is in quantitative agreement with existing experiments in cold atomic Fermi gases.

Abstract:We study ground-state properties of trapped atomic condensates with electric-field-induced dipole-dipole interactions. A rigorous method for constructing the pseudopotential in the spirit of ladder approximation is developed for general nonspherical (polarized) particles interacting anisotropically. We discuss interesting features not previously considered for currently available alkali-metal condensates. In addition, to provide a quantitative assessment for controlling atomic interactions with electric fields, our investigation may also shed a different light into the macroscopic coherence properties of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of dilute interacting atoms.

Abstract:The ability to tune the strength of the attractive interaction in trapped Fermi gases is revealing the nature of superfluidity (and supercon ductivity) in a hitherto unexplored regime. Within the last few years we have wit nessed the discovery of strongly interacting Fermi gases; over the last ye ar we have found strong evidence for their superfluidity. These interactinggases appear at intermediate coupling and are the most complex. Abstract:We propose an efficient mechanism for the evaporative cooling of trapped fermions directly into quantum degeneracy. Our idea is based on an electric field induced elastic interaction between trapped atoms in spin symmetric states. We discuss some novel general features of fermionic evaporative cooling and present numerical studies demonstrating the feasibility for the cooling of alkali metal fermionic species $^6$Li, $^{40}$K, and $^{82,84,86}$Rb. We also discuss the sympathetic cooling of fermionic hyperfine spin mixtures, including the effects of anisotropic interactions.

Kondo metal of fermionic atoms in anisotropic triangular optical lattice

Abstract: Quantum phase transition of fermionic atoms in anisotropic triangular optical lattice was investigated by dynamical cluster approximation combining with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. The temperature-interaction phase diagram for different hoping terms and the competition between the anisotropic parameter and interaction is presented. Our results show that the system undergoes Mott transition from Fermi liquid to Mott insulator while the repulsive interaction reach the critical value. The Kondo metal characterized by Kondo peak in the density of states is found in this systems and the pseudogap are suppressed at low temperature due to the Kondo effect. We also propose a feasible experiment protocol to observe these phenomenon in the anisotropic triangular optical lattice with the cold atoms, in which the hoping terms can be varied by the lattice depth and the atomic interaction can be adjusted via Feshbach resonance.

Notably, there exists a fermionic isotope of strontium with a large nuclear spin. Recent proposals use these features for novel schemes of quantum computation and for simulations of lattice spin models. These proposals require deeply degenerate and well-controlled samples of atoms in optical lattices. As a prerequisite of such studies, we have achieved Bose-Einstein condensation of bosonic isotopes of strontium, spin-polarized Fermi gases, and combinations of the two, and we will present new work on the bosonic isotopes towards the realization of quantum simulation schemes.

Abstract:The phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute gases in traps is reviewed from a theoretical perspective. Mean-field theory provides a framework to understand the main features of the condensation and the role of interactions between particles. Various properties of these systems are discussed, including the density profiles and the energy of the ground-state configurations, the collective oscillations and the dynamics of the expansion, the condensate fraction and the thermodynamic functions. The thermodynamic limit exhibits a scaling behavior in the relevant length and energy scales. Despite the dilute nature of the gases, interactions profoundly modify the static as well as the dynamic properties of the system; the predictions of mean-field theory are in excellent agreement with available experimental results. Effects of superfluidity including the existence of quantized vortices and the reduction of the moment of inertia are discussed, as well as the consequences of coherence such as the Josephson effect and interference phenomena. The review also assesses the accuracy and limitations of the mean-field approach.
