Abstract:With the eigenfunctional theory, we study the correlation of the local electrons in the Kondo lattice model, and give a general formulation to calculate the correlation functions of the local electrons where it ends in order to calculate the partition function of the conduction electrons with time-dependent external potentials. This formulation may be very useful to study the low-energy physical property of the Kondo lattice model by numerical simulations, especially by the quantum Monte Carlo method. In order to justify this formulation, we apply it for one and two magnetic impurities scattering problems in the continuum limit, and obtain reliable results that are in agreement with previous exact results.

Abstract:Kondo physics in nonequilibrium interacting nanoscale devices is an attractive fundamental many-particle phenomenon with a rich potential for applications. Due to enormous complexity its clear and flexible theory is still highly desirable. We develop a physically transparent analytical theory capable to correctly describe the Kondo effect in strongly interacting systems at temperatures close to and above the Kondo temperature. We derive a nonequilibrium Keldysh field theory valid for a system with any finite electron-electron interaction which is much stronger than the coupling of the system to contacts. Finite electron-electron interactions are treated involving as many slave-boson degrees of freedom as one needs for a concrete many-body system. In a small vicinity of the zero slave-bosonic field configuration weak slave-bosonic oscillations, induced by the dot-contacts tunneling, are described by an effective Keldysh action quadratic in the slave-bosonic fields. For clarity the theory is presented for the single impurity Anderson model but the construction of the Keldysh field integral is universal and applicable to systems with more complex many-body spectra.

Abstract:We investigate the boundary phenomena that arise in a finite-size spin chain interacting through an interaction with a spin impurity located at its edge. Upon Jordan-Wigner transformation, the model is described by a quadratic Fermionic Hamiltonian. Our work displays, within this ostensibly simple model, the emergence of the Kondo effect, a quintessential hallmark of strongly correlated physics. We also show how the Kondo cloud shrinks and turns into a single particle bound state as the impurity coupling increases beyond a critical value. In more detail, using both extit{Bethe Ansatz} and extit{exact diagonalization} (ED) techniques, we show that the local moment of the impurity is screened by different mechanisms depending on the ratio of the boundary and bulk coupling . When the ratio falls below the critical value , the impurity is screened via the Kondo effect. However, when the ratio between the coupling exceeds the critical value an exponentially localized bound mode is formed at the impurity site which screens the spin of the impurity in the ground state. We show that the boundary phase transition is reflected in local ground state properties by calculating the spinon density of states, the magnetization at the impurity site in the presence of a global magnetic field, and the finite temperature susceptibility of the impurity. We find that the spinon density of states in the Kondo phase has the characteristic Lorentzian peak that moves from the Fermi level to the maximum energy of the spinon as the impurity coupling is increased and becomes a localized bound mode in the bound mode phase. Moreover, the impurity magnetization and the finite temperature impurity susceptibility behave differently in the two phases. When the boundary coupling exceeds the critical value , the model is no longer boundary conformal invariant as a massive bound mode appears at the impurity site.

Abstract:We explore the Kondo effect incorporating the localized impurity transforming under generic symmetry group $G$, that we call the $G$-Kondo effect. We derive the one-dimensional effective model coupled with the impurity, and studied the thermodynamic properties based on the boundary conformal field theory approach. We in particular study the impurity entropy at the conformal fixed point, and the low temperature behavior of the specific heat and the susceptibility. We also consider the Wilson ratio based on these results, and mention the case with exceptional group symmetry.

Kondo spectral functions at low-temperatures: A dynamical-exchange-correlation-field perspective

Abstract:We calculate the low-temperature spectral function of the symmetric single impurity Anderson model using a recently proposed dynamical exchange-correlation (xc) field formalism. The xc field, coupled to the one-particle Green's function, is obtained through analytic analysis and numerical extrapolation based on finite clusters. In the Kondo regime, the xc field is modeled by an ansatz that takes into account the different asymptotic behaviors in the small- and large-time regimes. The small-time xc field contributes to the Hubbard side-band, whereas the large-time to the Kondo resonance. We illustrate these features in terms of analytical and numerical calculations for small- and medium-size finite clusters, and in the thermodynamic limit. The results indicate that the xc field formalism provides a good trade-off between accuracy and complexity in solving impurity problems. Consequently, it can significantly reduce the complexity of the many-body problem faced by first-principles approaches to strongly correlated materials.

Towards an exact electronic quantum many-body treatment of Kondo correlation in magnetic impurities

Abstract:The Kondo effect is a prototypical quantum phenomenon arising from the interaction between localized electrons in a magnetic impurity and itinerant electrons in a metallic host. Although it has served as the testing ground for quantum many-body methods for decades, the precise description of Kondo physics with material specificity remains challenging. Here, we present a systematic ab initio approach to converge towards an exact zero-temperature electronic treatment of Kondo correlations. Across a series of 3d transition metals, we extract Kondo temperatures matching the subtle experimental trends, with an accuracy far exceeding that of standard models. We further obtain microscopic insight into the origin of these trends. More broadly, we demonstrate the possibility to start from fully ab initio many-body simulations and push towards the realm of converged predictions.

Kondo Impurities at a Finite Concentration of Impurities

Abstract:In this work we study the Kondo impurity problem - at a finite concentration of impurities. We identify two parameter regimes for the Kondo impurity problem. 1) The single impurity limit, where the concentration of Kondo impurities is so low that the background scattering mechanisms (non-magnetic impurities, Umklapp scattering, etc.) of the metal considered are the dominant conduction electron scattering mechanisms at zero temperature. 2) The dilute impurity system limit where the concentration of magnetic impurities is such that they form the dominant mechanism of conduction electron scattering at zero temperature of the metal in question (this is accompanied by a variety of easily detectable Kondo signatures (resistance minimum, specific heat measurements, magnetization as a function of external magnetic field, conduction electron dephasing rates as well as ARPES, RIXS and NMR spectroscopies)) while still being very dilute. Most theoretical efforts are currently in regime where a single isolated impurity is considered - regime 1) while most experimental efforts are in regime 2). We present analytical evidence that this explains the well known discrepancy between experiment and theory as to the value of the Kondo temperature. We find that the ratio between the two Kondo temperatures in regime 1) and regime 2) is given by: $\mathcal{R}=\exp\left[\frac{\pi^{2}\rho v_{F}}{2k_{F}^{2}Vol}\right]$ where $\rho$ is the density of states, $v_{F}$ is the fermi velocity, and $k_{F}$ is the Fermi wavevector and $Vol$ is the volume of a unit cell. We note that there is no dependence on the impurity concentration in this ratio so it is possible to define a single Kondo temperature for limit 2) for the dilute Kondo impurity system. In this work we present results within the Reed-Newns Kondo meanfield approximation and to leading order of the linked cluster expansion.

Kondo lattice model: from local to non-local descriptions

Abstract:In this paper, we study the influence of spatial fluctuations in a two-dimentional Kondo-Lattice model (KLM) with anti-ferromagnetic couplings. To accomplish this, we first present an implementation of the dual-fermion (DF) approach based on the hybridization expansion continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver (CT-HYB), which allows us to consistently compare the local and non-local descriptions of this model. We find that, the inclusion of non-locality restores the self-energy dispersion of the conduction electrons, {\it i.e.} the $\vec{k}$ dependence of $\Sigma(\vec{k}, i\omega_{n})$. The anti-ferromagnetic correlations result in an additional symmetry in $\Sigma(\vec{k}, i\omega_{n})$, which is well described by the Néel antiferromagnetic wave-vector. A "metal"-"anti-ferromagnetic insulator"-"Kondo insulator" transition is observed at finite temperatures, which is driven by the competition of the effective RKKY interaction (at the weak coupling regime) and the Kondo singlet formation mechanism (at the strong coupling regime). Away from half-filling, the anti-ferromagnetic phase becomes unstable against hole doping. The system tends to develop a ferromagnetic phase with the spin susceptibility $\chi_{s}(Q)$ peaking at $Q=\Gamma$. However, for small $J/t$, no divergence of $\chi_{s}(\Gamma)$ is really observed, thus, we find no sign of long-range ferromagnetism in the hole-doped two-dimension KLM. The ferromagnetism is found to be stable at larger $J/t$ regime. Interestingly, we find the local approximation employed in this work, {\it i.e.} the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), is still a very good description of the KLM, especially in the hole-doped case. However, at half-filling, the non-local fluctuation effect is indeed pronounced. We observe a strong reduction of the critical coupling strength for the onset of the Kondo insulating phase.

The Kondo impurity in the large spin limit

Abstract:The Kondo problem, which describes the interaction of a spin $s$ magnetic impurity with a free Fermi gas, is a classic example of strongly coupled physics. Historically, the problem has been solved by Wilson's numerical renormalization group and later by Bethe ansatz. In this paper, we present an alternate analytic solution of the Kondo problem that combines an expansion in $1/s$ with the renormalization group. We study both the case of an impurity interacting with a single channel $K=1$ of fermions in the $s \rightarrow \infty$ limit and the case with $K$ channels in the double-scaling limit $K \rightarrow \infty$, $s \to \infty$, $K/s$ fixed. Our approach allows us to describe analytically intermediate scales of the Kondo problem at large $s$ and compute thermodynamic observables such as the impurity entropy and susceptibility. We find these observables to agree with the Bethe ansatz results. We also compute the impurity spectral function, finite temperature resistivity and the Kondo screening cloud profile, properties that are not easily accessible from Bethe ansatz. Notably, in the regime $K > 2s$ we access the "non-Fermi-liquid" overscreened fixed point of the multichannel Kondo problem.

Abstract:A spin-1/2 magnetic impurity coupled to a one-dimensional correlated electron system have been studied by applying the density renormalization group method. The Kondo temperature is substantially enhanced by strong repulsive interactions in the chain, but it changes non-monotonically in the case of electron attraction. The magnetization of the impurity at zero-temperature shows local Fermi liquid behavior.

Abstract:The Kondo scale TK for impurity systems is expected to guarantee universal scaling of physical quantities. However, in practice, not every definition of TK necessarily supports this notion away from the strict scaling limit. Specifically, this paper addresses the role of finite bandwidth D in the strongly-correlated Kondo regime. For this, various theoretical definitions of TK are analyzed based on the inverse magnetic impurity susceptibility at zero temperature. While conventional definitions in that respect quickly fail to ensure universal Kondo scaling for all D, this paper proposes an altered definition of TK_{sc} that allows universal scaling of dynamical or thermal quantities for a given fixed Hamiltonian. If the scaling is performed with respect to an external parameter which directly enters the Hamiltonian, such as magnetic field, the corresponding TK_{sc;B} for universal scaling differs, yet becomes equivalent to TK_{sc} in the scaling limit. The only requirement for universal scaling in the full Kondo parameter regime with a residual error of less than 1% is a well-defined isolated Kondo feature with TK < 0.01D. By varying D over a wide range relative to the bare energies of the impurity, for example, this allows a smooth transition from the Anderson to the Kondo model.

Abstract:The one-dimensional Kondo lattice model (1D KLM) is usually defined by the Kondo exchange $J$ between conduction electrons and spins of the array, and the hopping strength t for the moving electrons. Here, we also include a direct exchange $K$ term between spins of the lattice, and we investigate situations where the bare value of $K$ does not exceed $J$. By using the non-Abelian bosonization, we show that a coherent heavy-fermion phase can be stabilized, when the bare value of $K$ exceeds the RKKY exchange (ruled by $T_A\simeq J^2/t$). Conversely, when $K<T_A$, the low-energy fixed point is rather a Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid.

Kondo effect in the isotropic Heisenberg spin chain

Abstract:We investigate the boundary effects that arise when spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ impurities interact with the edges of the antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain through spin exchange interactions. We consider both cases when the couplings are ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic. We find that in the case of antiferromagnetic interaction, when the impurity coupling strength is much weaker than that in the bulk, the impurity is screened in the ground state via the Kondo effect. The Kondo phase is characterized by the Lorentzian density of states and dynamically generated Kondo temperature $T_K$. As the impurity coupling strength increases, $T_K$ increases until it reaches its maximum value $T_0=2\pi J$ which is the maximum energy carried by a single spinon. When the impurity coupling strength is increased further, we enter another phase, the bound mode phase, where the impurity is screened in the ground state by a single particle bound mode exponentially localized at the edge to which the impurity is coupled. We find that the impurity can be unscreened by removing the bound mode. There exists a boundary eigenstate phase transition between the Kondo and the bound-mode phases, a transition which is characterized by the change in the number of towers of the Hilbert space. The transition also manifests itself in ground state quantities like local impurity density of states and the local impurity magnetization. When the impurity coupling is ferromagnetic, the impurity is unscreened in the ground state; however, when the absolute value of the ratio of the impurity and bulk coupling strengths is greater than $\frac{4}{5}$, the impurity can be screened by adding a bound mode that costs energy greater than $T_0$. When two impurities are considered, the phases exhibited by each impurity remain unchanged in the thermodynamic limit, but nevertheless the system exhibits a rich phase diagram.

Perturbation Approach for the Kondo Hamiltonian

Abstract:The bosonized Kondo Hamiltonian is obtained by comparing the long-time limit of the reduced grand partition function for the impurity spin. We analyze this bosonized Kondo Hamiltonian at zero temperature and derive an effective Hamiltonian describing the effective interaction between the conduction electrons via an impurity-spin scattering. The infrared divergences encountered in the conventional perturbation theory are caused by this growth effective coupling at the low-energy limit. With the Bogoliubov transformation, we have developed a perturbation approach for this effective Hamiltonian and investigated the nontrivial ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic crossover of the impurity spin. The critical condition derived here is in agreement with the renormalization-group numerical result. In particular, the ground-state wave function and its excitation spectrum of the conduction electrons are also obtained. Moreover, this effective Hamiltonian may be mapped onto a modified quantum sine-Gordon model. Paralleling the renormalization-group theory of the quantum sine-Gordon model, we straightforwardly reproduce previous results and derive the higher-order terms and a new universal correction in the flow equations.
A Quantitative Solution to the Kondo Lattice Problem

Abstract:Metallic Kondo Lattice systems that have been prepared to exhibit a competition between ordering of magnetic moments and shielding of those moments by the conduction electrons down to absolute zero display unusual low-temperature responses. Here we show that the dominant response of such systems is caused by two quantum effects: zero-point motion of the ions, and the size of the system restricting the allowed wavelengths of fluctuations. This zero-point motion of the ions induces a broad distribution in Kondo shielding temperatures that renders the assumption of a uniform heavy-fermion ground state untenable. However, letting go of this assumption and instead incorporating these two quantum effects leads to percolation physics that quantitatively captures the non-Fermi liquid response in both stoichiometric and doped quantum critical compounds, allowing for a unified description of all quantum critical systems.

Effective Field Theory of Conformal Boundaries

Abstract:We introduce an effective field theory (EFT) for conformal impurity by considering a pair of transversely displaced impurities and integrating out modes with mass inversely proportional to the separation distance. This EFT captures the universal signature of the impurity seen by a heavy local operator. We focus on the case of conformal boundaries and derive universal formulas from this EFT for the boundary structure constants at high energy. We point out that the more familiar thermal EFT for conformal field theory is a special case of this EFT with distinguished conformal boundaries. We also derive, for general conformal impurities, non-positivity and convexity-like constraints on the Casimir energy which determines the leading EFT coefficient.
