Abstract:The Kondo problem, which describes the interaction of a spin $s$ magnetic impurity with a free Fermi gas, is a classic example of strongly coupled physics. Historically, the problem has been solved by Wilson's numerical renormalization group and later by Bethe ansatz. In this paper, we present an alternate analytic solution of the Kondo problem that combines an expansion in $1/s$ with the renormalization group. We study both the case of an impurity interacting with a single channel $K=1$ of fermions in the $s \rightarrow \infty$ limit and the case with $K$ channels in the double-scaling limit $K \rightarrow \infty$, $s \to \infty$, $K/s$ fixed. Our approach allows us to describe analytically intermediate scales of the Kondo problem at large $s$ and compute thermodynamic observables such as the impurity entropy and susceptibility. We find these observables to agree with the Bethe ansatz results. We also compute the impurity spectral function, finite temperature resistivity and the Kondo screening cloud profile, properties that are not easily accessible from Bethe ansatz. Notably, in the regime $K > 2s$ we access the "non-Fermi-liquid" overscreened fixed point of the multichannel Kondo problem.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problem does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to find the analytical solution to the Kondo impurity problem in the large - spin limit. Specifically, the author proposes a new analytical method, combining the 1/s expansion and the Renormalization Group (RG) technique, to study the system where a magnetic impurity with spin s interacts with a free Fermi gas. The main focuses include: 1. **Single - channel Kondo model**: Study the single - channel Kondo model when spin \(s \to \infty\), and calculate thermodynamic observables such as impurity entropy, magnetic susceptibility, etc. 2. **Multi - channel Kondo model**: Extend to the multi - channel case, consider the interaction between fermions in \(K\) channels and the impurity, and describe the complete crossover process from the ultraviolet (UV) free - spin fixed point to the infrared (IR) fixed point in the double - scaling limit \(K \to \infty, s \to \infty, K/s\) fixed. 3. **Non - Fermi - liquid behavior**: Pay special attention to the behavior at the so - called "overscreened" non - Fermi - liquid fixed point in the case of \(K > 2s\). ### Main contributions - **Analytical solution method**: Provide an analytical solution to the Kondo problem in the large - spin limit, supplementing the results historically obtained only by the Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) and Bethe ansatz methods. - **Calculation of thermodynamic quantities**: Calculate thermodynamic quantities such as impurity entropy, magnetic susceptibility, and resistivity at a finite temperature, and compare them with the Bethe ansatz results to verify the consistency. - **Spectral function and other properties**: Also calculate physical quantities such as the impurity spectral function and the Kondo screening cloud distribution, which are difficult to obtain directly through the Bethe ansatz. - **Understanding of RG**: Through the Renormalization Group method, explain the crossover process from UV to IR fixed points, and reveal the rich physical phenomena in the multi - channel Kondo model, especially the behavior near the non - Fermi - liquid fixed point. ### Formula summary - **Relationship between phase shift and coupling**: \[ \rho = 2\arctan\left(\frac{sJ}{4}\right) \] - **RG equation**: \[ \frac{d\rho}{d\ell}=-\beta(\rho)=\frac{1}{\pi s}\sin^{2}\rho + O\left(\frac{1}{s^{2}}\right) \] - **Entropy formula**: \[ S_{\text{imp}}=\log\left[2s + 1-\frac{\rho(T)}{\pi}+\frac{\sin(2\rho(T))}{2\pi}\right]+O\left(\frac{1}{s^{2}}\right) \] - **Specific heat formula**: \[ C(T)=\frac{4\sin^{4}\rho(T)}{\pi s\left(2\pi + 4\pi s-2\rho(T)+\sin(2\rho(T))\right)}+O\left(\frac{1}{s^{3}}\right) \] These formulas show how the author, through theoretical derivation and analytical methods, has a deep understanding of the Kondo effect in the large - spin limit and related physical phenomena.
