Abstract:In θ-expanded approach, we expand the noncommutative quantum electrodynamics action to θ2 order and calculate the one loop divergent corrections to gauge field propagators. It is shown that the gauge field propagators are one loop renormalizable at θ2-order with a massive or massless fermion field.

Abstract:We develop a purely quantum theory based on the novel principle of relativity, termed the quantum principle of relativity, instead of applying the diffeomorphism invariance. We demonstrate that the essence of the principle of relativity can be naturally extended into the quantum realm, maintaining the identical structures of active and passive transformations. By employing this principle, we show that quantum gravitational effects are naturally incorporated into the renormalizable theory, with general relativity emerging in large distances. We derive graviton propagators and provide several examples grounded in this novel theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the relation between the super-renormalizable theories of quantum gravity studied by Biswas, Gerwick, Koivisto, and Mazumdar [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 031101 (2012)] and Modesto [arXiv: 1107.2403; arXiv: 1202.0008] and an underlying noncommutativity of space-time. For one particular super-renormalizable theory, we show that at the linear level (quadratic in the Lagrangian) the propagator of the theory is the same one we obtain starting from a theory of gravity endowed with theta-Poincare quantum groups of symmetry. Such a theory is over the so-called theta-Minkowski noncommutative space-time. We shed new light on this link and show that, among the theories considered in these references, there exists only one nonlocal and Lorentz invariant super-renormalizable theory of quantum gravity that can be described in terms of a quantum-group symmetry structure. We also emphasize contact with preexistent works in the literature and discuss preservation of the equivalence principle in our framework.
Renormalisation of postquantum-classical gravity

Abstract:One of the obstacles to reconciling quantum theory with general relativity, is constructing a theory which is both consistent with observation, and and gives finite answers at high energy, so that the theory holds at arbitrarily short distances. Quantum field theory achieves this through the process of renormalisation, but famously, perturbative quantum gravity fails to be renormalisable, even without coupling to matter. Recently, an alternative to quantum gravity has been proposed, in which the geometry of spacetime is taken to be classical rather than quantum, while still being coupled to quantum matter fields [1, 2]. This can be done consistently, provided the dynamics is fundamentally stochastic. Here, we find that the pure gravity theory is formally renormalisable. We do so via the path integral formulation by relating the classical-quantum action to that of quadratic gravity which is renormalisable. Because the action induces stochastic dynamics of space-time, rather than deterministic evolution of a quantum field, the classical-quantum theory is free of tachyons and negative norm ghosts. The key remaining question is whether the renormalisation prescription retains completely positive (CP) dynamics. This consideration appears to single out the scale invariant and asymptotically free theory. We give further evidence that the theory is CP, by showing that the two-point function of the scalar mode is positive. To support the use of precision accelerometers in testing the quantum nature of spacetime, we also compute the power spectral density of the acceleration. The results presented here have a number of implications for inflation, CMB data, and experiments to test the quantum nature of spacetime. They may also provide a way to compute probabilities in the regime of quantum gravity where spacetime can be treated as effectively classical.

Abstract:We present the proof of renormalization of the Horava theory, in the nonprojectable version. We obtain a form of the quantum action that exhibits a manifest BRST-symmetry structure. Previous analysis has shown that the divergences produced by irregular loops cancel completely between them. The remaining divergences are local. The renormalization is achieved by using the approach developed by Barvinsky et al. with the background-field formalism.

Abstract:We provide a Wilsonian proof for the renormalizability of four-dimensional quantum field theories with N=1/2 supersymmetry. We argue that the non-Hermiticity inherent to these theories permits assigning a noncanonical scaling dimension both for the Grassman coordinates and superfields. This reassignment can be done in such a way that the non(anti)commutativity parameter is dimensionless, and then the rest of the proof amounts to power counting. The renormalizability is also stable against adding standard four-dimensional soft-breaking terms to the theory. However, with the new scaling dimension assignments, some of these terms are not just relevant deformations of the theory but become marginal.

Abstract:Non(anti)commutative gauge theories are supersymmetric Yang-Mills and matter system defined on a deformed superspace whose coordinates obey non(anti)commutative algebra. We prove that these theories in four dimensions with N=1/2 supersymmetry are renormalizable to all orders in perturbation theory. Our proof is based on operator analysis and symmetry arguments. In a case when the Grassman-even coordinates are commutative, deformation induced by non(anti)commutativity of the Grassman-odd coordinates contains operators of dimension-four or higher. Nevertheless, they do not lead to power divergences in a loop diagram because of absence of operators Hermitian-conjugate to them. In a case when the Grassman-even coordinates are noncommutative, the ultraviolet-infrared mixing makes the theory renormalizable by the planar diagrams, and the deformed operators are not renormalized at all. We also elucidate relation at quantum level between non(anti)commutative deformation and N=1/2 supersymmetry. We point out that the star product structure dictates a specific relation for renormalization among the deformed operators.

Abstract:We extensively study the ultraviolet quantum properties of a nonlocal action for gravity nonminimally coupled to matter. The theory unifies matter and gravity in an action principle such that all the classical solutions of Einstein's theory coupled to matter are also solutions of the nonlocal theory. At the quantum level, we show that the theory is power-counting super-renormalizable in even dimensions and finite in odd dimensions. A simple extension of the model compatible with the above properties is finite also in even dimensions.

Abstract:Canonical quantization of gravity requires knowledge about the representation theory of its constraint algebra, which is physically equivalent to the algebra of arbitrary 4-diffeomorphisms. All interesting lowest-energy representations are projective, making the relevant algebra into a four-dimensional generalization of the Virasoro algebra. Such diffeomorphism anomalies are invisible in field theory, because the relevant cocycles are functionals of the observer's trajectory in spacetime. The multi-dimensional Virasoro algebra acts naturally in the phase space of arbitrary histories, with dynamics playing the role of first-class constraints. General relativity is regularized by expanding all fields in Taylor series around the observer's trajectory, and truncating at some fixed order. This regularized but manifestly general-covariant theory is quantized in the history phase space, and dynamics is imposed afterwards, in analogy with BRST quantization. Infinities arise when the regularization is removed; it is presently unclear how these should be dealt with.

Abstract:General relativity becomes vastly simpler in three spacetime dimensions: all vacuum solutions have constant curvature, and the moduli space of solutions can be almost completely characterized. As a result, this lower dimensional setting becomes an ideal test bed for a wide range of approaches to quantum gravity, from reduced phase phase space quantization to covariant canonical quantization to path integral methods to asymptotic quantization of "edge states." Here I review a variety of classical descriptions of the moduli space of solutions and a broad range of quantizations, with special attention to implications for realistic quantum gravity in four spacetime dimensions.

Normalization of the vacuum and the ultraviolet completion of Einstein gravity

Abstract:Second-order-derivative plus fourth-order-derivative gravity is the ultraviolet completion of second-order-derivative quantum Einstein gravity. While it achieves renormalizability through states of negative Dirac norm, the unitarity violation that this would entail can be postponed to Planck energies. As we show in this paper the theory has a different problem, one that occurs at all energy scales, namely that the Dirac norm of the vacuum of the theory is not finite. To establish this we present a procedure for determining the norm of the vacuum in any quantum field theory. With the Dirac norm of the vacuum of the second-order-derivative plus fourth-order-derivative theory not being finite, the Feynman rules that are used to establish renormalizability are not valid, as is the assumption that the theory can be used as an effective theory at energies well below the Planck scale. This lack of finiteness is also manifested in the fact that the Minkowski path integral for the theory is divergent. Because the vacuum Dirac norm is not finite, the Hamiltonian of the theory is not Hermitian. However, it turns out to be $PT$ symmetric. And when one continues the theory into the complex plane and uses the $PT$ symmetry inner product, viz. the overlap of the left-eigenstate of the Hamiltonian with its right-eigenstate, one then finds that for the vacuum this norm is both finite and positive, the Feynman rules now are valid, the Minkowski path integral now is well behaved, and the theory now can serve as a low energy effective theory. Consequently, the theory can now be offered as a fully consistent, unitary and renormalizable theory of quantum gravity.

Abstract:We propose a renormalisable quantum theory of gravity (QGED) based on the standard BRST quantisation used to quantise the Yang-Mills theory. The BRST-invariant Lagrangian of the gravitationally interacting $U(1)$-gauge theory, including gauge fixing and ghost parts, is provided. From this Lagrangian, we extract a set of Feynman rules in the local inertial frame where gravity vanishes locally. Utilising Feynman rules of the QGED prepared here, we construct all renormalisation constants and show that the theory is perturbatively renormalisable in one-loop order. We replace infinite-valued bare objects in the bare Lagrangian with experimentally measured ones. In addition to standard QED parameters, we show that the gravitational coupling constant is measurable experimentally. We also discuss a running effect of the gravitational coupling constant and the perturbative estimation of the Hawking radiation as examples of the perturbative QGED.

Fixed Points of Quantum Gravity from Dimensional Regularisation

Abstract:We investigate $\beta$-functions of quantum gravity using dimensional regularisation. In contrast to minimal subtraction, a non-minimal renormalisation scheme is employed which is sensitive to power-law divergences from mass terms or dimensionful couplings. By construction, this setup respects global and gauge symmetries, including diffeomorphisms, and allows for systematic extensions to higher loop orders. We exemplify this approach in the context of four-dimensional quantum gravity. By computing one-loop $\beta$-functions, we find a non-trivial fixed point. It shows two real critical exponents and is compatible with Weinberg's asymptotic safety scenario. Moreover, the underlying structure of divergences suggests that gravity becomes, effectively, two-dimensional in the ultraviolet. We discuss the significance of our results as well as further applications and extensions to higher loop orders.

Abstract:An approach to renormalization of scalar fields on the Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts (DFR) quantum spacetime is presented. The effective non-local theory obtained through the use of states of optimal localization for the quantum spacetime is reformulated in the language of (perturbative) Algebraic Quantum Field Theory. The structure of the singularities associated to the non-local kernel that codifies the effects of noncommutativity is analyzed using the tools of microlocal analysis.

Consistent Canonical Quantization of Gravity: Recovery of Classical GR from BRST-invariant Coherent States

Abstract:We perform canonical quantization of General Relativity, as an effective quantum field theory below the Planck scale, within the BRST-invariant framework. We show that the promotion of constraints to dynamical equations of motion for auxiliary fields leads to the healthy Hamiltonian flow. In particular, we show that the classical properties of Einstein's gravity, such as vanishing Hamiltonian modulo boundary contribution, is realized merely as an expectation value in appropriate physical states. Most importantly, the physicality is shown not to entail trivial time-evolution for correlation functions. In the present approach we quantize the theory once and for all around the Minkowaski vacuum and treat other would-be classical backgrounds as BRST-invariant coherent states. This is especially important for cosmological spacetimes as it uncovers features that are not visible in ordinary semi-classical treatment. The Poincaré invariance of the vacuum, essential for our quantization, provides strong motivation for spontaneously-broken supersymmetry.

Higher-Derivative Quantum Gravity with Purely Virtual Particles: Renormalizability and Unitarity

Abstract:We review the formulation of quantum field theories with purely virtual particles, a new type of degrees of freedom that can mediate interactions without ever appear as external on-shell states. This property allows to solve the problem of ghosts in higher-derivative quantum gravity, leading to a renormalizable and unitary theory. The main steps for the BRST quantization of gravity are recalled and renormalizability is discussed. Then, we introduce purely virtual particles in a general quantum field theory and show the derivation of the so-called spectral identities, which are a key ingredient to prove unitarity. Finally, phenomenological consequences and predictions in inflationary cosmology are presented.

Off-shell divergences in quantum gravity

Abstract:We investigate off-shell perturbative renormalisation of pure quantum gravity for both background metric and quantum fluctuations. We show that at each new loop order, the divergences that do not vanish on-shell are constructed from only the total metric, whilst those that vanish on-shell are renormalised by canonical transformations involving the quantum fields. Purely background metric divergences do not separately appear, and the background metric does not get renormalised. We highlight that renormalisation group identities play a crucial role ensuring consistency in the renormalisation of BRST transformations beyond one loop order. We verify these assertions by computing leading off-shell divergences to two loops, exploiting off-shell BRST invariance and the renormalisation group equations. Although some divergences can be absorbed by field redefinitions, we explain why this does not lead to finite beta-functions for the corresponding field.
