Abstract:In the Brans-Dicke model we treat the scalar field exactly and expand the gravitational field in a power series. A comparison with 2D sigma models and \phi^{4} perturbation theory in four dimensions suggests that the perturbation series in 4D Brans-Dicke model is renormalizable.

Abstract:In θ-expanded approach, we expand the noncommutative quantum electrodynamics action to θ2 order and calculate the one loop divergent corrections to gauge field propagators. It is shown that the gauge field propagators are one loop renormalizable at θ2-order with a massive or massless fermion field.

Abstract:We prove the renormalizability of quantum gravity near two dimensions. The successful strategy is to keep the volume preserving diffeomorphism as the manifest symmetry of the theory. The general covariance is recovered by further imposing the conformal invariance. The proof utilizes BRS formalism in parallel with Yang-Mills theory. The crucial ingredient of the proof is the relation between the conformal anomaly and the $\beta$ functions.

Abstract:An approach to renormalization of scalar fields on the Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts (DFR) quantum spacetime is presented. The effective non-local theory obtained through the use of states of optimal localization for the quantum spacetime is reformulated in the language of (perturbative) Algebraic Quantum Field Theory. The structure of the singularities associated to the non-local kernel that codifies the effects of noncommutativity is analyzed using the tools of microlocal analysis.

Bulk Renormalization and Particle Spectrum in Codimension-Two Brane Worlds

Abstract:We study the Casimir energy due to bulk loops of matter fields in codimension-two brane worlds and discuss how effective field theory methods allow us to use this result to renormalize the bulk and brane operators. In the calculation we explicitly sum over the Kaluza-Klein (KK) states with a new convenient method, which is based on a combined use of zeta function and dimensional regularization. Among the general class of models we consider we include a supersymmetric example, 6D gauged chiral supergravity. Although much of our discussion is more general, we treat in some detail a class of compactifications, where the extra dimensions parametrize a rugby ball shaped space with size stabilized by a bulk magnetic flux. The rugby ball geometry requires two branes, which can host the Standard Model fields and carry both tension and magnetic flux (of the bulk gauge field), the leading terms in a derivative expansion. The brane properties have an impact on the KK spectrum and therefore on the Casimir energy as well as on the renormalization of the brane operators. A very interesting feature is that when the two branes carry exactly the same amount of flux, one half of the bulk supersymmetries survives after the compactification, even if the brane tensions are large. We also discuss the implications of these calculations for the natural value of the cosmological constant when the bulk has two large extra dimensions and the bulk supersymmetry is partially preserved (or completely broken).

Renormalisation in maximally symmetric spaces and semiclassical gravity in Anti-de Sitter spacetime

Abstract:We obtain semiclassical gravity solutions in the Poincaré fundamental domain of $(3+1)$-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime, PAdS$_4$, with a (massive or massless) Klein-Gordon field (with possibly non-trivial curvature coupling) with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary. Some results are explicitly and graphically presented for special values of the mass and curvature coupling (e.g. minimal or conformal coupling). In order to achieve this, we study in some generality how to perform the Hadamard renormalisation procedure for non-linear observables in maximally symmetric spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions, with emphasis on the stress-energy tensor. We show that, in this maximally symmetric setting, the Hadamard bi-distribution is invariant under the isometries of the spacetime, and can be seen as a `single-argument' distribution depending only on the geodesic distance, which significantly simplifies the Hadamard recursion relations and renormalisation computations.

Abstract:The conformal structure of Brans-Dicke gravity action is carefully studied. It is discussed that Brans-Dicke gravity action has definitely no conformal invariance. It is shown, however, that this lack of conformal invariance enables us to demonstrate that Brans-Dicke theory appears to have a better short-distance behavior than Einstein gravity as far as Euclidean path integral formulation for quantum gravity is concerned.
Renormalization of Massive Rank-1 Field Theory Nonminimally Coupled to Quantum Gravity

Abstract:We consider a self-interacting, massive rank-1 field coupled to quantum gravity. The theory is renormalizable by power counting and contains a massive spin-1 field and a massive scalar field. The latter has a propagator with negative residue and it is quantized as a purely virtual particle, namely it cannot appear as external on-shell state but contributes to renormalization. In this way the resulting theory is also unitary, both in flat spacetime and when it is coupled to renormalizable quantum gravity (where purely virtual particles are required as well). We compute the full set of one-loop beta functions, including those of the nonminimal couplings. We show that the gravitational couplings cannot be made asymptotically free in absence of tachyons, even with the addition of the two nonminimal terms. Various aspects of renormalizability are discussed by studying the beta functions. Finally, we compare our model with Proca theory, where renormalizability is spoiled if self interactions are present.

Abstract:We suggest a thick braneworld model in the squared curvature gravity theory. Despite the appearance of higher order derivatives, the localization of gravity and various bulk matter fields is shown to be possible. The existence of the normalizable gravitational zero mode indicates that our four-dimensional gravity is reproduced. In order to localize the chiral fermions on the brane, two types of coupling between the fermions and the brane forming scalar is introduced. The first coupling leads us to a Schrödinger equation with a volcano potential, and the other a Pöschl-Teller potential. In both cases, the zero mode exists only for the left-hand fermions. Several massive KK states of the fermions can be trapped on the brane, either as resonant states or as bound states.

Abstract:One of the obstacles to reconciling quantum theory with general relativity, is constructing a theory which is both consistent with observation, and and gives finite answers at high energy, so that the theory holds at arbitrarily short distances. Quantum field theory achieves this through the process of renormalisation, but famously, perturbative quantum gravity fails to be renormalisable, even without coupling to matter. Recently, an alternative to quantum gravity has been proposed, in which the geometry of spacetime is taken to be classical rather than quantum, while still being coupled to quantum matter fields [1, 2]. This can be done consistently, provided the dynamics is fundamentally stochastic. Here, we find that the pure gravity theory is formally renormalisable. We do so via the path integral formulation by relating the classical-quantum action to that of quadratic gravity which is renormalisable. Because the action induces stochastic dynamics of space-time, rather than deterministic evolution of a quantum field, the classical-quantum theory is free of tachyons and negative norm ghosts. The key remaining question is whether the renormalisation prescription retains completely positive (CP) dynamics. This consideration appears to single out the scale invariant and asymptotically free theory. We give further evidence that the theory is CP, by showing that the two-point function of the scalar mode is positive. To support the use of precision accelerometers in testing the quantum nature of spacetime, we also compute the power spectral density of the acceleration. The results presented here have a number of implications for inflation, CMB data, and experiments to test the quantum nature of spacetime. They may also provide a way to compute probabilities in the regime of quantum gravity where spacetime can be treated as effectively classical.

Abstract:We present the proof of renormalization of the Horava theory, in the nonprojectable version. We obtain a form of the quantum action that exhibits a manifest BRST-symmetry structure. Previous analysis has shown that the divergences produced by irregular loops cancel completely between them. The remaining divergences are local. The renormalization is achieved by using the approach developed by Barvinsky et al. with the background-field formalism.

On the Perturbative Quantization of Einstein-Hilbert Gravity Embedded in a Higher Derivative Model II

Abstract:In a previous paper we presented the renormalization of Einstein-Hilbert gravity under inclusion of higher derivative terms and proposed a projection down to the physical state space of Einstein-Hilbert. In the present paper we describe this procedure in more detail via decomposing the original double-pole field $h^{\mu\nu}$ in the bilinear field sector into a massless and a massive spin two field. Those are associated with the poles at zero mass resp. at non-zero mass of $h$ in the tree approximation. We show that the massive fields have no poles in higher orders hence do not correspond to particles. $S$-matrix unitarity is violated only in tree approximation. On the way to these results we derive finiteness properties which are valid in the Landau gauge. Those simplify the renormalization group analysis of the model considerably. We also establish a rigid Weyl identity which represents a proper substitute for a Callan-Symanzik equation in flat spacetime.

Running with Rugby Balls: Bulk Renormalization of Codimension-2 Branes

Abstract:We compute how one-loop bulk effects renormalize both bulk and brane effective interactions for geometries sourced by codimension-two branes. We do so by explicitly integrating out spin-zero, -half and -one particles in 6-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar theories compactified to 4 dimensions on a flux-stabilized 2D geometry. (Our methods apply equally well for D dimensions compactified to D-2 dimensions, although our explicit formulae do not capture all divergences when D>6.) The renormalization of bulk interactions are independent of the boundary conditions assumed at the brane locations, and reproduce standard heat-kernel calculations. Boundary conditions at any particular brane do affect how bulk loops renormalize this brane's effective action, but not the renormalization of other distant branes. Although we explicitly compute our loops using a rugby ball geometry, because we follow only UV effects our results apply more generally to any geometry containing codimension-two sources with conical singularities. Our results have a variety of uses, including calculating the UV sensitivity of one-loop vacuum energy seen by observers localized on the brane. We show how these one-loop effects combine in a surprising way with bulk back-reaction to give the complete low-energy effective cosmological constant, and comment on the relevance of this calculation to proposed applications of codimension-two 6D models to solutions of the hierarchy and cosmological constant problems.

New exact solution and anomaly in Brans-Dicke gravity with trace-carrying matter

Abstract:We present an exact static spherically symmetric solution for the Brans-Dicke action sourced by a self-gravitating massless Klein-Gordon helicity-0 field, which notably possesses an energy-momentum tensor with nonvanishing trace . Through a Weyl mapping into the Einstein frame, the Brans-Dicke scalar field transforms into a "dilaton" that couples with the Klein-Gordon field. Despite this dilatonic coupling, the field equations of the resulting Einstein-Klein-Gordon-dilaton action are fully soluble using the harmonic radial coordinate. Remarkably, in the limit of ω→∞ , the Brans-Dicke scalar field exhibits an anomalous behavior of O(1/ω) as opposed to the expected O(1/ω) . Consequently, the solution converges to a spacetime configuration of general relativity sourced by the original Klein-Gordon field and a free scalar field, the latter being the O(1/ω) "remnant" of the Brans-Dicke scalar field. Although this O(1/ω) anomaly was previously identified for Brans-Dicke vacuum and Brans-Dicke-Maxwell electrovacuum, our findings demonstrate its generic applicability in Brans-Dicke gravity, irrespective of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor of the source. We also provide a formal mathematical proof to bolster this conclusion. Furthermore, we discuss the potential implications of the O(1/ω) anomaly in improving the relativistic corrections to Newtonian gravity beyond the weak-field parametrized post-Newtonian formalism. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.110.064075 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The loop quantization of the conformal Brans-Dicke cosmology is explored in the spatially flat and Bianchi-I setting. The scalar and conformal constraints governing the canonical model are quantized using the loop techniques. The physical Hilbert space of quantum spacetimes satisfying both quantum constraints is then obtained by incorporating the quantum geometric features. The Schrödinger cosmic evolutions are derived with the relational Heisenberg observables describing the dynamical degrees of freedom with respect to the chosen reference degrees of freedom, with the latter providing the physical coordinates for the spatial hypersurfaces and the conformal scales. We show that the emerging Schrödinger theories contain not only the loop quantum cosmology of GR, but also that of the so-called shape dynamics. The exact dictionary between the two theories is achieved via the underlying physical Hilbert space possessing the additional (loop-corrected) conformal symmetry.

Abstract:We consider a formulation of the Brans-Dicke theory in Jordan's frame for Bianchi-I spacetime within the framework of loop quantum gravity. The robustness of singularity resolutions due to the quantum effects is explicitly verified in the context of two quantization schemes typically used in the literature. We present an exploration of the effects of quantum geometry on the background dynamics, which is also illustrated through some explicit numerical examples and showing the absence of the singularity.

On the permanence of renormalons in compactified spaces

Abstract:We investigate the existence and behavior of renormalon singularities with respect to $d$ spatial compactifications and quasiperiodic boundary conditions. Employing a toy model (scalar field theory with quartic interaction) we find that the size of the compactification and the number of compactified dimensions do not influence the number and the location of the renormalon poles. The only influence occurs in the residues. We enforce the need to carefully check the asymptotic approximations every time there is some result about the appearance of new renormalon poles or their cancellation.

On the renormalization of massive vector field theory coupled to scalar in curved space-time

Abstract:We consider the renormalization of massive vector field interacting with charged scalar field in curved spacetime. Starting with the theory minimally coupled to external gravity and using the formulations with and without Stückelberg fields, we show that the longitudinal mode of vector field is completely decoupled and the remaining theory of transverse vector field is renormalizable by power counting. The formal arguments based on the covariance and power counting indicate that multiplicative renormalizability of the interacting theory may require introducing two non-minimal terms linear in Ricci tensor in the vector sector. Nevertheless, a more detailed analysis shows that these non-minimal terms violate the decoupling of the longitudinal mode and are prohibited. As a verification of general arguments, we derive the one-loop divergences in the minimal massive scalar QED, using Stückelberg procedure and the heat-kernel technique. The theory without non-minimal terms proves one-loop renormalizable and admits the renormalization group equations for all the running parameters in the scalar and vector sectors. One-loop beta functions do not depend on the gauge fixing and can be used to derive the effective potential.

Abstract:A Randall-Sundrum-like braneworld scenario is constructed in a 5D extension of the Lorentz-violating massive gravity. The gauge hierarchy problem is solved in current model. The linear perturbations are calculated, and it is found that the tensor and vector perturbations are robust and free from the ghost and tachyonic instabilities, however, the scalar perturbation is a ghost filed. After Kaluza-Klein reduction, all the tensor, vector and scalar modes are massive and possess the mass splitting of order of TeV in their respective mass spectra. The massive ground states of tensor and scalar modes propagate only along the brane, however, the vector ground state is absent in the mass spectrum. By introducing the Goldberger-Wise mechanism to stabilize the extra dimension, the 4D effective theory on the brane includes a nearly massless graviton plus three towers of very massive spin-2, spin-1 and ghost spin-0 particles.

Abstract:In a series of recent works based on foliation-based quantization in which renormalizability has been achieved for the physical sector of the theory, we have shown that the use of the standard graviton propagator interferes, due to the presence of the trace mode, with the 4D covariance. A subtlety in the background field method also requires careful handling. This status of the matter motivated us to revisit an Einstein-scalar system in one of the sequels. Continuing the endeavors, we revisit the one-loop renormalization of an Einstein-Maxwell system in the present work. The systematic renormalization of the cosmological and Newton's constants is carried out by applying the refined background field method. One-loop beta function of the vector coupling constant is explicitly computed and compared with the literature. The longstanding problem of gauge choice-dependence of the effective action is addressed and the manner in which the gauge-choice independence is restored in the present framework is discussed. The formalism also sheds light on background independent analysis. The renormalization involves a metric field redefinition originally introduced by `t Hooft; with the field redefinition the theory should be predictive.

Renormalizable Cosmology Based on Gauss-Bonnet Theory with Torsion

Abstract:This paper focuses on renormalizable cosmology based on the Gauss-Bonnet theory with torsion. Within the framework of renormalizable quantum field theory, we study the matter field containing the Gauss-Bonnet correction term. By modifying the gauge model, which includes a charged scalar field and two families of fermions, and introducing torsion and Gauss-Bonnet corrections, we analyze the field equations in the super-symmetric hybrid inflation model, investigate the properties of torsion in a flat universe, the characteristics of the energy-momentum tensor, and the sensitivity of the theoretical model to correction parameters. This study shows that the Gauss-Bonnet correction term can directly affect the Hubble constant through the Einstein equations, providing a new observational perspective. This paper proposes a cosmological model that can be adjusted according to different Gauss-Bonnet correction models, providing a theoretical reference for future observational verification of various Gauss-Bonnet models.
