Abstract:We discuss a connection between the lantern relation in mapping class groups and the rational blowing down process for 4-manifolds. More precisely, if we change a positive relator in Dehn twist generators of the mapping class group by using a lantern relation, the corresponding Lefschetz fibration changes into its rational blowdown along a copy of the configuration C_2. We exhibit examples of such rational blowdowns of Lefschetz fibrations whose blowup is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the original fibration.

Abstract:The rational homology balls $B_n$ appeared in Fintushel and Stern's rational blow-down construction [FS2]. Later, Symington [Sy1], defined this operation in the symplectic category. In [Kh2], the author defined the inverse procedure, the symplectic rational blow-up. In this paper, we study the obstructions to symplectically rationally blowing up a symplectic 4-manifold, i.e. the obstructions to symplectically embedding the rational homology balls $B_n$ into a symplectic 4-manifold. We prove a theorem and give additional examples which suggest that in order to symplectically embed the rational homology balls $B_n$, for high n, a symplectic 4-manifold must at least have a high enough $c_1^2$ as well.

Abstract:Despite spectacular advances in defining invariants for simply connected smooth and symplectic 4-dimensional manifolds and the discovery of effective surgical techniques, we still have been unable to classify simply connected smooth manifolds up to diffeomorphism. In these notes, adapted from six lectures given at the 2006 Park City Mathematics Institute Graduate Summer School on Low Dimensional Topology, we will review what we do and do not know about the existence and uniqueness of smooth and symplectic structures on closed, simply connected 4-manifolds. We will focus on those surgical techniques that have been effective in altering smooth and symplectic structures and the Seiberg-Witten invariants that are used to distinguish them. In the last lecture we will then pose a possible classification scheme and test it on a few examples.

Abstract:We describe a sequence of smooth quotients of the Deligne-Mumford moduli space ${\mathbb R}\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,\ell+1}$ of real rational curves with $\ell\!+\!1$ conjugate pairs of marked points that terminates at ${\mathbb R}\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,\ell}\!\times\!{\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^1$. This produces an analogue of Keel's blowup construction of the Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal M}_{\ell+1}$ of rational curves with $\ell\!+\!1$ marked points, but with an explicit description of the intermediate spaces and the blowups of three different types. The same framework readily adapts to the real moduli spaces with real points. In a sequel, we use this inductive construction of ${\mathbb R}\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,\ell+1}$ to completely determine the rational (co)homology ring of ${\mathbb R}\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,\ell}$.

Abstract:Abstract We construct a sequence of explicit blow-ups and blow-downs on an irreducible compact Hermitian symmetric spaces $X$ which transforms it into a projective space of the same dimension. Moreover, this resolves a birational map given by Landsberg and Manivel. Centers of the blow-ups for $X$ are constructed by loci of chains of minimal rational curves and centers of the blow-ups for the projective space are constructed from the variety of minimal rational tangents of $X$ and its higher secant varieties. The result was known in the special case where $X$ is of rank 2 and could be found in Zak’s monograph “Tangents and secants of algebraic varieties.”

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a smooth $k$-dimensional hypersurface in $\mathbb P^{k+1}$ and $X \supset \Gamma$ a smooth $n$-dimensional Fano hypersurface in $\mathbb P^{n+1}$ where $n\geq 3$ and $k\geq 1$. Let $Y \rightarrow X$ be the blowup of $X$ along $\Gamma$. We give a constructive proof that $Y$ is a Mori dream space. In particular, we describe its Mori chamber decomposition and the associated birational models of $Y$. We classify for which $X$ and $\Gamma$ the variety $Y$ is a Fano manifold and we initiate the study of K-stability of $Y$.

Blow-up sets of Ricci curvatures of complete conformal metrics

Abstract: A version of the singular Yamabe problem in smooth domains in a closed manifold yields complete conformal metrics with negative constant scalar curvatures. In this paper, we study the blow-up phenomena of Ricci curvatures of these metrics on domains whose boundary is close to a certain limit set of a lower dimension. We will characterize the blow-up set according to the Yamabe invariant of the underlying manifold. In particular, we will prove that all points in the lower dimension part of the limit set belong to the blow-up set on manifolds not conformally equivalent to the standard sphere and that all but one point in the lower dimension part of the limit set belong to the blow-up set on manifolds conformally equivalent to the standard sphere. In certain cases, the blow-up set can be the entire manifold. We will demonstrate by examples that these results are optimal.

Abstract:According to [CG4]|and [CFG], the complete manifolds with bounded sectional curvature and finite volume admit positive rank F-structures near infinity. In this paper, we show that, in dimension four, if the manifolds also have bounded covering geometry near infinity, then there exist F-structures with special topological properties. F-structures with these properties cannot be constructed solely by means of the general methods in [CG4]|and [CFG]. Using these special properties we prove a conjecture of Cheeger-Gromov on the rationality of the geometric signatures in the four dimensional case.

Practical Software for Triangulating and Simplifying 4-Manifolds

Abstract:Dimension 4 is the first dimension in which exotic smooth manifold pairs appear -- manifolds which are topologically the same but for which there is no smooth deformation of one into the other. Whilst smooth and triangulated 4-manifolds do coincide, comparatively little work has been done towards gaining an understanding of smooth 4-manifolds from the discrete and algorithmic perspective. In this paper we introduce new software tools to make this possible, including a software implementation of an algorithm which enables us to build triangulations of 4-manifolds from Kirby diagrams, as well as a new heuristic for simplifying 4-manifold triangulations. Using these tools, we present new triangulations of several bounded exotic pairs, corks and plugs (objects responsible for "exoticity"), as well as the smallest known triangulation of the fundamental K3 surface. The small size of these triangulations benefit us by revealing fine structural features in 4-manifold triangulations.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a compact and sufficiently smooth manifold of dimension $d$. Suppose $\mathcal{M}$ is nowhere completely flat. Let $N_{\mathcal{M}}(\delta,Q)$ denote the number of rational vectors $\mathbf{a}/q$ within a distance of $\delta/q$ from $\mathcal{M}$ so that $q \in [Q,2Q)$. We develop a novel method to analyse $N_{\mathcal{M}}(\delta,Q)$. The salient feature of our technique is the combination of powerful quantitative non-divergence estimates, in a form due to Bernik, Kleinbock, and Margulis, with Fourier analytic tools. The second ingredient enables us to eschew the Dani correspondence and an explicit use of the geometry of numbers. We employ this new method to address in a strong sense a problem of Beresnevich regarding lower bounds on $N_{\mathcal{M}}(\delta,Q)$ for non-analytic manifolds. Additionally, we obtain asymptotic formulae which are the first of their kind for such a general class of manifolds. As a by-product, we improve upon upper bounds on $N_{\mathcal{M}}(\delta,Q)$ from a recent breakthrough of Beresnevich and Yang and recover their convergence Khintchine type theorem for arbitrary nondegenerate submanifolds. Moreover, we obtain new Hausdorff dimension and measure refinements for the set of well-approximable points for a range of Diophantine exponents close to $1/n$.

Abstract:We give an estimate for Manolescu's $\kappa$-invariant of a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ by the data of a spin 4-orbifold bounded by $Y$. By an appropriate choice of a 4-orbifold, sometimes we can restrict and determine the value of $\kappa$. We give such examples in case of Dehn surgeries along knots in $S^3$.

Abstract:We consider the space of holomorphic maps from a compact Riemann surface to a projective space blown up at finitely many points. We show that the homology of this mapping space equals that of the space of continuous maps that intersect the exceptional divisors positively, once the degree of the maps is sufficiently positive compared to the degree of homology. The proof uses a version of Vassiliev's method of simplicial resolution. As a consequence, we obtain a homological stability result for rational curves on the degree $5$ del Pezzo surface, which is analogous to a case of the Batyrev--Manin conjectures on rational point counts.

Birational geometry of blowups via Weyl chamber decompositions and actions on curves

Abstract:In this paper we study the birational geometry of $X$, a projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ blown up at $s$ general points. We obtain a characterization of a special class of subvarieties, which we call Weyl $r$-planes, each of them being swept out by one $(n-r)$-moving curve class. For Mori dream spaces $X$, we unify different previous approaches, by reinterpreting the description of the Mori chamber decomposition of the effective cone in terms of these curve classes; in this case all relevant orbits are finite. For general $s$, we prove that Weyl $r$-planes are infinite and continue to appear as stable base locus. This yields the definition of the Weyl chamber decomposition of the pseudoeffective cone of divisors, that is a coarsening of its Mori chamber decomposition, when the latter can be defined. We prove that the combinatorics of such chamber decomposition obeys the Weyl group action on curves. We conjecture that for $s=n+4$ the Weyl and the Mori chamber decompositions coincide.

Rationality of Seshadri constants on blow-ups of ruled surfaces

Abstract:In this note, we continue the study of Seshadri constants on blow-ups of Hirzebruch surfaces initiated in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2312.14555" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.14555">arXiv:2312.14555</a>. Now we consider blow-ups of ruled surfaces more generally. We propose a conjecture for classifying all the negative self-intersection curves on the blow-up of a ruled surface at very general points, analogous to the $(-1)$-curves conjecture in $\mathbb{P}^2$. Assuming this conjecture is true, we exhibit an ample line bundle with an irrational Seshadri constant at a very general point on such a surface.

Abstract:We construct invariants under deformation of real symplectic 4-manifolds. These invariants are obtained by counting three different kinds of real rational J-holomorphic curves which realize a given homology class and pass through a given real configuration of (the appropriate number of) points. These curves are cuspidal curves, reducible curves and curves with a prescribed tangent line at some real point of the configuration. They are counted with respect to some sign defined by the parity of their number of isolated real double points and in the case of reducible curves, with respect to some mutiplicity. In the case of the complex projective plane equipped with its standard symplectic form and real structure, these invariants coincide with the ones previously constructed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.AG/0303145" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0303145">math.AG/0303145</a>. This leads to a relation between the count of real rational J-holomorphic curves done in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.AG/0303145" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0303145">math.AG/0303145</a> and the count of real rational reducible J-holomorphic curves presented here.
