Abstract:Electroweak penguin operators become important when $m_t \approx 174$ GeV. We discuss their implications for measuring CP violating phases $\alpha$, $\beta$ and $\gamma$.

In the Standard Model, for the leptonic modes improvement in experimental limits will put strigient bounds on the top mass, where the present limit from $b\rightarrow s \mu^+\mu^-$ is 390 GeV. For hadronic penguin processes, although the gluonic penguin dominates, we find the electroweak contribution are around 30\% for the upper range allowed top mass. The branching ratio for $B\rightarrow X_s \phi$ is predicted to be in the range $(0.6\sim 2)\times 10^{-4}$. Effects of the charged Higgs in two Higgs doublet models are discussed.

Abstract:The recently observed ${B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$, ${\overline{K}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ decay modes appear to have nearly equal branching ratios. This suggests that tree and electroweak penguins play an important role, and inclusion of the latter improves agreement between factorization calculation and experimental data. The value of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ in the range of $90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}--130\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ and $220\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}--260\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ is favored, while the ${\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{K}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ rate is suppressed. Direct $\mathrm{CP}$ violation for $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}K\ensuremath{\pi}$ modes can be large if final state interaction phases are large.

Abstract:The CP-violating charge asymmetry in the decays K+/--->pi(+/-)gammagamma, which is induced by the electromagnetic penguin operators, has been studied both in the standard model and in its extensions. Because of a large enhancement of the Wilson coefficients of the electromagnetic penguin operators in the supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, a significant upper bound on this charge asymmetry could be expected, and thus high-precision measurements of this interesting CP-violating quantity might explore new physics effects beyond the standard model.

An overview of the measurements made at the $B$ factories and hadron colliders are given and the experimental methods are presented. Experimental measurements required to provide further insight into present indications of New Physics are discussed.

Abstract:We reanalyze the decay $B_d\to\pi^+\pi^-$ without assuming dominance of QCD penguins with internal top-quark exchanges. In that case the weak phase of the $\bar b \to\bar d$ QCD penguin amplitude is not related in a simple way to the CKM angle $\beta$. Nevertheless it is still possible to extract the CKM angle $\alpha$ in a transparent and almost model-independent way from the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry of the transition $B_d\to\pi^+\pi^-$. Aside from that CP asymmetry this approach needs as an input only amplitudes of decays with branching ratios of order $10^{-5}$ and will thus be well within reach at future $B$-factories.

Abstract:We study elelctroweak penguin contributions in pure hadronic $B$ decays in the Standard and two-Higgs-doublet models. We find that in $B_s\rightarrow \pi^0 (\eta\;, \phi)$ and $B_s\rightarrow \rho^0 (\eta\;, \phi)$ decays, the electroweak penguin contributions dominate over all other contribuitons. These processes provide unique signatures of electroweak penguin in pure hadronic processes. These modes could be in measureable range of future $B$ facilities.

Abstract:Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model predict a large enhancement of the Wilson coefficients of the dimension-five electromagnetic penguin operators affecting the direct CP violation in K-L --> pi(0)e(+)e(-) and the charge asymmetry in K+/- --> pi(+/-)l(+)l(-). Here we compute the relevant matrix elements in the chiral quark model and compare these with the ones given by lattice calculations.

Abstract:We formulate the most general time-dependent distributions of ${B}_{s}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}(\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{l}^{+}{l}^{\ensuremath{-}})\ensuremath{\phi}(\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ in which the direct charge parity ($CP$) violation is explicitly incorporated. We investigate the $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}V$ decays in the perturbative QCD approach where $V$ is a light vector meson. Apart from the leading-order factorizable contributions, we also take into account QCD vertex corrections and the hard-spectator diagrams. With the inclusion of these sizable corrections, most of our theoretical results for $CP$-averaged branching ratios, polarization fractions, $CP$-violating asymmetries, and relative phases are consistent with the available data. Based on the global agreement, we further explore the penguin contributions and point out that the ${\ensuremath{\phi}}_{s}$ extracted from ${B}_{s}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\phi}$ can be shifted away by $\mathcal{O}({10}^{\ensuremath{-}3})$.

Abstract:With the generalized factorization approximation, we calculate the branching ratios and CP asymmetries in B meson decays into two charmless pseudoscalar mesons. We give a new estimation of the matrix elements of (S+P)(S-P) current products with the PQCD method instead of equation of motion. We find that our results are comparatively smaller than those in the literature.

A Study of Some Methods for Measuring CKM CP Violating Phases

Abstract:We study the influence of penguin (especially, electroweak penguin) effects on some methods of measuring the angles α, β, and γ in the CKM unitarity triangle. We use next-to-leading order effective Hamiltonian, and present numerical estimates based on the factorization approximation. We find that some techniques suggested in the literature, especially for α determination, are not workable in light of the electroweak penguin effects. Nevertheless, there are methods that would work for each angle determination. For angle β we consider B → D +D∼ - mode and estimate the penguin contamination. For angle γ we consider a method based on SU(3) symmetry and carefully consider SU(3) breaking effects. We point out regions in the parameter space where this method could be used reliably.

Abstract:We consider the gluon dipole penguin operator contributions to ϵ′/ϵ and CP violation in hyperon decays. It has been proposed by Bertolini et al. that the contribution to ϵ′/ϵ may be significant. We show that there is a cancellation in the leading order contribution and this contribution is actually suppressed by a factor of order O(mπ2, mK2)/Λ2. We find that the same operator also contributes to CP violation in hyperon decays where it is not suppressed. The gluon dipole penguin operator can enhance CP violation in hyperon decays by as much as 25%.

Abstract:The pure annihilation type decays $B^0_d\to\phi\gamma$ and $B_s\to\rho\gamma$ receive only color suppressed penguin contributions with a very small branching ratio in the standard model. When we include the previously neglected electromagnetic dipole operator, the branching ratios can be enhanced one order magnitude larger than previous study using QCD factorization approach. That is ${\cal BR}(\bar B^0_d\to\phi\gamma)\simeq 1 \times 10^{-11}$ and ${\cal BR}(B_s\to\rho\gamma) \sim (6-16)\times 10^{-10}$. The new effect can also give a large contribution, of order $10^{-9}$, to transverse polarization of $B\to\phi\rho$ and $B\to \omega\phi$ which is comparable to the longitudinal part. These effects can be detected in the LHCb experiment and the Super-B factories.

Abstract:We study in next-to-leading order QCD hadronic penguin B decays in the Standard and two-Higgs-doublet models. Although the gluonic penguin dominates, we find the electroweak contribution non-negligible. In the Standard Model, the branching ratio for B --> X(s)phi is predicted to be in the range (0.6-2) x 10(-4). The ranges of branching ratios for B --> Kphi, B --> K* phi, and B(s) --> phiphi are (0.4-2) x 10(-5), (0.2-1) x 10(-5), and (0.15-0.5) x 10(-5), respectively. The contribution from the charged Higgs boson in two Higgs doublet models depend on cot beta, and can be as large as 40%.

Abstract:Loop-suppressed penguin $b\to s$ transitions are sensitive to heavy New Physics particles propagating inside the loops. Thanks to the large sample sizes from the LHC, we are able to perform multidimensional angular analyses that are sensitive to interferences between the Standard Model and New Physics terms. This article surveys the latest results, primarily from LHCb, on $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ electroweak and $b\to s\gamma$ radiative penguins.

Abstract:Isospin structure of gluon mediated or strong penguin is significantlyaltered when the full electroweak corrections are included. This has theconsequence that some previous analyses which relied on a simple isospinstructure in charmless B decays become inapplicable. Abstract:We compute for the first time the long-distance penguin contribution to the double radiative B -meson decays by applying the perturbative factorization theorem. The numerically dominant penguin amplitude arises from the soft-gluon radiation off the light up-quark loop rather than the counterpart charm-loop effect.
