Abstract:We critically discuss the measure of very short time intervals. By means of a "gedankenexperiment", we describe an ideal clock based on the occurrence of completely random events. We show that the minimum time interval Delta t that this clock can measure scales as the inverse of its size Delta r. This implies an uncertainty relation between space and time: Delta r Delta t > G \hbar / c^4, where G, \hbar, and c are the Gravitational constant, the reduced Planck constant, and the speed of light, respectively. We outline and briefly discuss the implications of this uncertainty principle.

Abstract:Inspired by the work of Wheeler among others, we have studied the problem of quantum measurements of space-time distances by applying the general principles of quantum mechanics as well as those of general relativity. Contrary to the folklore, the minimum error in the measurement of a length is shown to be proportional to the one-third power of the length itself. This uncertainty in space-time measurements implies an uncertainty of the space-time metric and yields quantum decoherence for particles heavier than the Planck mass. There is also a corresponding minimum error in energy-momentum measurements.

Abstract:Classical clocks measure proper time along their worldline, and Riemannian geometry provides tools for predicting the time shown by clocks in both flat and curved spacetimes. Common approaches to time in quantum systems, based for instance on wave functions or density matrices, tend to obscure this geometric property at the quantum level. Here, a new framework is demonstrated for perturbing the classical path-length functional to include quantum degrees of freedom within a modified Riemannian geometry. In this framework, a quantum clock travels on geodesics of a family of spacetimes deformed by parameters specifying the clock's quantum state. Detailed derivations provide potentially testable corrections to gravitational time-dilation in Schwarzschild spacetime that scale with the ratio of the clock's Compton wavelength to its wave packet's spatial extent.

Abstract:The theory of relativity associates a proper time with each moving object via its world line. In quantum theory however, such well-defined trajectories are forbidden. After introducing a general characterisation of quantum clocks, we demonstrate that, in the weak-field, low-velocity limit, all "good" quantum clocks experience time dilation as dictated by general relativity when their state of motion is classical (i.e. Gaussian). For nonclassical states of motion, on the other hand, we find that quantum interference effects may give rise to a significant discrepancy between the proper time and the time measured by the clock. The universality of this discrepancy implies that it is not simply a systematic error, but rather a quantum modification to the proper time itself. We also show how the clock's delocalisation leads to a larger uncertainty in the time it measures -- a consequence of the unavoidable entanglement between the clock time and its center-of-mass degrees of freedom. We demonstrate how this lost precision can be recovered by performing a measurement of the clock's state of motion alongside its time reading.

Abstract:In this work, resolutions will be given for commonly stated problems associated with a model that assumes that space and time are discretized (i.e., atomized). This model is in contrast to the continuous space-time model that is used in all common physical theories and equations -- a model that assumes that spatial coordinates and time are continuous variables. The resolutions to the problems are arrived at, not by proposing any new theories or postulates, but by strictly adhering to: Ernst Mach's principle of non-absolute space, the tenets of logical positivism, quantum mechanics and general relativity. The problems associated with discrete space-time addressed in this paper include: Lorentz contraction (time dilation) of the ostensibly smallest spatial (temporal) interval, maintaining isotropy, violations of causality, and conservation of energy and momentum. Importantly, this work yields modifications to the standard formulae for time dilation and length contraction, with these modifications preserving the quantums of space and time and allowing for temporary travel at the speed of light. Also given are: a resolution to Weyl's tile argument, a modification of the 2500 year old Pythagoras's theorem, a reassessment of Henri Bergson's theory advocating a distinction between the time durations measured by scientists and an immutable "Time", and a discussion of whether Einstein's light-clocks are as ideal as most scientist believe. Also included is a demonstration of how discrete space imposes order upon John Wheeler's quantum foam such that the foam becomes a gravity crystal permeating all space and producing measurable inertial anomalies of astronomical bodies.

The effect of Planck scale space time fluctuations on Lorentz invariance at extreme speeds

Abstract:The starting point of this work is the axiomatic existence of a smallest measurable interval, viz. the Planck time $t_P$, set by quantum fluctuations in the vacuum metric tensor. By the Relativity Principle, the same limit must then apply to the accuracy of all clocks which register time of events in their own frames. Further, it implies that the ordinary meaning of distance also ceases in the same manner beyond a scale l_P = c t_P. We demonstrate that quantum space-time, if real, may be made manifest by observing very energetic collisions, defined as interactions which occurred with the center-of-mass frame $\Sigma'$ (of the participating bodies) moving at a high speed $v$ relative to our laboratory frame $\Sigma$. In such situations, the initial conditions of the interaction are determined from direct measurements of the ultra-energetic particles or photons by instruments aboard $\Sigma$: they gather a raw dataset ${\cal S}$ which are subject to the limiting uncertainties \~ (t_P, l_P). Yet a meaningful (i.e. experimentally verified) version of the interaction is one where the interaction is viewed from frame $\Sigma'$. Since no instruments aboard $\Sigma'$ have taken any data, the way we proceeded is by a Lorentz transformation of ${\cal S}$ from $\Sigma$ to $\Sigma'$. Beware however that the resulting ${\cal S'}$ no longer consists of raw data, i.e. Lorentz distortions of probability distributions render the uncertainties non-Planckian - in fact, it will be shown that as v -> c they are >> (t_P, l_P), and are no longer negligible. Examples will given to indicate how a proper interpretation of the most current high energy cosmic and gamma-ray data necessitates incorporation of the said effect.

Abstract:The phase of matter waves depends on proper time and is therefore susceptible to special-relativistic (kinematic) and gravitational (redshift) time dilation. Hence, it is conceivable that atom interferometers measure general-relativistic time-dilation effects. In contrast to this intuition, we show: (i.) Closed light-pulse interferometers without clock transitions during the pulse sequence are not sensitive to gravitational time dilation in a linear potential. (ii.) They can constitute a quantum version of the special-relativistic twin paradox. (iii.) Our proposed experimental geometry for a quantum-clock interferometer isolates this effect.

Abstract:Based on the Beltrami–de Sitter spacetime, we present the Newton–Hooke model under the Newton–Hooke contraction of the BdS spacetime with respect to the transformation group, algebra and geometry. It is shown that in Newton–Hooke space–time, there are inertial-type coordinate systems and inertial-type observers, which move along straight lines with uniform velocity. And they are invariant under the Newton–Hooke group. In order to determine uniquely the Newton–Hooke limit, we propose the Galilei–Hooke's relativity principle as well as the postulate on Newton–Hooke universal time. All results are readily extended to the Newton–Hooke model as a contraction of Beltrami–anti-de Sitter spacetime with negative cosmological constant.

Abstract:A model for the interpretation of spacetime as a Weyl geometry is proposed, based on the hypothesis that a system moves on any given path with a probability which is inversely proportional to the resulting change in length of the system. The results of physical measurements are calculated as the product of Weyl-conjugate gauge-dependent probabilities for the detection of conjugate objects. Each probability, expressed as a Wiener integral, is the Green's function for a diffusion equation. If the line integral of the Weyl field equals the action functional divided by ℏ this equation provides the stochastic equivalent of the Schrödinger equation, with expanding and contracting states replacing the oscillating states of standard quantum theory. These dilatations are not directly measurable within the theory, but the rates of expansion and contraction are. We establish the classical limit of the theory by proving that the most general form of the Weyl field which gives an extremum of the action is restricted to be of a special form. Particles obeying the equations of motion for these extremal Weyl fields experience no measurable dilatation. However, the Weyl field itself is classically detectable, and gives a correct description of the electromagnetic interaction of a point particle.

Abstract:This article examines Wigner's view on the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences, which was based on Cantor's claim that 'mathematics is a free creation of the human mind'. It is contended that Cantor's claim is not relevant to physics because it was based on his power set construction, which does not preserve neighborhoods of geometrical points. It is pointed out that the physical notion of Einstein causality can be defined on a countably infinite point set M with no predefined mathematical structure on it, and this definition endows M with a Tychonoff topology. Under Shirota's theorem, M can therefore be embedded as a closed subspace of RJ for some J. While this suggests that the differentiable structure of RJ may follow from the principle of causality, the argument is constrained by the fact that the completion processes (analyzed here in some detail) required for the passage from QJ to RJ remain empirically untestable.

Abstract:We derive new space-time uncertainty relations (STUR) at the fundamental Planck length $L_P$ from quantum mechanics and general relativity (GR), both in flat and curved backgrounds. Contrary to claims present in the literature, our approach suggests that no minimal uncertainty appears for lengths, but instead for minimal space and four-volumes. Moreover, we derive a maximal absolute value for the energy density. Finally, some considerations on possible commutators among quantum operators implying our STUR are done.

Abstract:After a review of the existing theory of non-inertial frames and mathematical observers in Minkowski space-time we give the explicit expression of a family of such frames obtained from the inertial ones by means of point-dependent Lorentz transformations as suggested by the locality principle. These non-inertial frames have non-Euclidean 3-spaces and contain the differentially rotating ones in Euclidean 3-spaces as a subcase. Then we discuss how to replace mathematical accelerated observers with dynamical ones (their world-lines belong to interacting particles in an isolated system) and how to define Unruh–DeWitt detectors without using mathematical Rindler uniformly accelerated observers. Also some comments are done on the transition from relativistic classical mechanics to relativistic quantum mechanics in non-inertial frames.

Abstract:A review of some errors made by the author and others in their search for quantum models of gravity in cosmological space-times that asymptote to de Sitter (dS) space in the future. The "static de Sitter Hamiltonian", which measures the energy of localized objects in a static patch, is not a conserved quantity. The static time translation diffeomorphism of eternal dS space is a gauge symmetry, and the static energy is an approximate property of meta-stable constrained states. It's not clear whether a theoretical model has to have a time independent Hamiltonian at all, but if it does, its eigenvalues are, {\it in principle}, not accessible to measurement by local detectors.

Abstract:The precision of optical atomic clocks is approaching a regime where they resolve gravitational time dilation on smaller scales than their own extensions. Hence, an accurate description of quantum clocks has to take their spatial extension into account. In this article, as a first step towards a fully relativistic description of extended quantum clocks, we investigate a quantized version of Einstein's light clock fixed at a constant distance from a large massive object like the Earth. The model consists of a quantum light field in a one-dimensional cavity in Schwarzschild spacetime, where the distance between the mirrors is fixed by a rigid rod. By comparing a vertical and a horizontal clock, we propose an operational way to define the clock time when the clock resolves gravitational time dilation on scales smaller than its extension. In particular, we show that the time measured by the vertical light clock is equivalent to the proper time defined at its center. We also derive fundamental bounds on the precision of these clocks for measurements of proper time and the Schwarzschild radius.

Abstract:We point out that, if one accepts the view that the standard second on an atomic clock is dilated at low gravitational potential (ordinary gravitational time dilation), then the standard meter must also be dilated at low gravitational potential and by the same factor (gravitational space dilation). These effects may be viewed as distortions of the time and length standards by the gravitational field, and measurements made with these distorted standards can be "corrected" by means of a conformal transformation applied to the usual spacetime metric of general relativity. The surprising feature of this single-observer picture is a substantial simplification of interpretation and formalism for numerous phenomena in a static gravitational field as compared to the conventional "many-observer" interpretation of general relativity.

Abstract:We study gauge theories and quantum gravity diagrammatically in a finite interval of time τ , on a compact space manifold Ω . The initial, final, and boundary conditions are formulated in gauge invariant and general covariant ways by means of purely virtual extensions of the theories, which allow us to "trivialize" the local symmetries and switch to invariant fields (the invariant metric tensor, invariant quark, and gluon fields, etc.). The evolution operator U(tf,ti) is worked out for arbitrary initial and final states, as well as general boundary conditions on ∂Ω . We show that U(tf,ti) is well defined and diagrammatically unitary for every τ=tf−ti<∞ . The formulation is extended to include purely virtual particles. In quantum gravity, where the cosmological constant ΛC challenges the definition of an S matrix, the results allow us to prove unitarity at τ<∞ . Abstract:The conceptual definition and understanding of time, both quantitatively and qualitatively is of the utmost difficulty and importance. As time is incorporated into the proper structure of the fabric of spacetime, it is interesting to note that General Relativity is contaminated with non-trivial geometries which generate closed timelike curves. A closed timelike curve (CTC) allows time travel, in the sense that an observer that travels on a trajectory in spacetime along this curve, may return to an event before his departure. This fact apparently violates causality, therefore time travel and it's associated paradoxes have to be treated with great caution. The paradoxes fall into two broad groups, namely the consistency paradoxes and the causal loops. A great variety of solutions to the Einstein field equations containing CTCs exist and it seems that two particularly notorious features stand out. Solutions with a tipping over of the light cones due to a rotation about a cylindrically symmetric axis and solutions that violate the energy conditions. All these aspects are analyzed in this review paper.

Abstract:The interest of part of the quantum-gravity community in the possibility of Planck-scale-deformed Lorentz symmetry is also fueled by the opportunities for testing the relevant scenarios with analyses, from a signal-propagation perspective, of observations of bursts of particles from cosmological distances. In this respect the fact that so far the implications of deformed Lorentz symmetry have been investigated only for flat (Minkowskian) spacetimes represents a very significant limitation, since for propagation over cosmological distances the curvature/expansion of spacetime is evidently tangible. We here provide a significant step toward filling this gap by exhibiting an explicit example of Planck-scale-deformed relativistic symmetries of a spacetime with constant rate of expansion (deSitterian). Technically we obtain the first ever example of a relativistic theory of worldlines of particles with 3 nontrivial relativistic invariants: a large speed scale ("speed-of-light scale"), a large distance scale (inverse of the "expansion-rate scale"), and a large momentum scale ("Planck scale"). We address some of the challenges that had obstructed success for previous attempts by exploiting the recent understanding of the connection between deformed Lorentz symmetry and relativity of spacetime locality. We also offer a preliminary analysis of the differences between the scenario we here propose and the most studied scenario for broken (rather than deformed) Lorentz symmetry in expanding spacetimes.

Abstract:A possibility to describe quantum gravitational fluctuations of the spacetime background is provided by virtual $D$-branes. These effects may induce a tiny violation of the Lorentz invariance (as well as a possible violation of the equivalence principle). In this framework, we study the formation of light elements in the early Universe (Big Bang Nucleosynthesis). By using the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis observations, We infer an upper bound on the topological fluctuations in the spacetime foam vacuum $\sigma^2$, given by $\sigma^2 \lesssim 10^{-22}$.
