Abstract:Topological winding in non-Hermitian systems are generally associated to the Bloch band properties of lattice Hamiltonians. However, in certain non-Hermitian models topological winding naturally arise from the dynamical evolution of the system and related to a new form of geometric phase. Here we investigate dynamical topological winding in non-Hermitian photonic mesh lattices, where the mean survival time of an optical pulse circulating in coupled fiber loops is quantized and robust against Hamiltonian deformations. The suggested photonic model could provide an experimentally accessible platform for the observation of non-Hermitian dynamical topological windings.

Abstract:Non-linear effects and non-Hermitian phenomena unveil additional intricate facets in topological matter physics. They can naturally intertwine to enable advanced functionalities in topoelectrical circuits and photonic structures. Here, we illustrate the subtle interplay between nonlinearity and non-Hermiticity by examining the characteristics of small wave perturbations on the background of the self-induced topological edge state in the nonlinear Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We demonstrate that their underlying physics is captured by the non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian, which features nonreciprocal coupling terms and entails unconventional time-dependent field localization.

Abstract:The non-trivial topological features in the energy band of non-Hermitian systems provide promising pathways to achieve robust physical behaviors in classical or quantum open systems. A key topological feature, unique to non-Hermitian systems, is the non-trivial winding of the energy band in the complex energy plane. Here we provide direct experimental demonstrations of such non-trivial winding, by implementing non-Hermitian lattice Hamiltonians along a frequency synthetic dimension formed in a ring resonator undergoing simultaneous phase and amplitude modulations, and by directly characterizing the complex band structures. Moreover, we show that the topological winding can be straightforwardly controlled by changing the modulation waveform. Our results open a pathway for the experimental synthesis and characterization of topologically non-trivial phases in non-conservative systems.

Abstract:In non-Hermitian quasicrystals, mobility edges (ME) separating localized and extended states in the complex energy plane can arise as a result of non-Hermitian terms in the Hamiltonian. Such ME are of topological nature, i.e., the energies of localized and extended states exhibit distinct topological structures in the complex energy plane. However, depending on the origin of non-Hermiticity, i.e., asymmetry of hopping amplitudes or complexification of the incommensurate potential phase, different winding numbers are introduced, corresponding to different transport features in the bulk of the lattice: while ballistic transport is allowed in the former case, pseudo-dynamical localization is observed in the latter case. The results are illustrated by considering non-Hermitian photonic quantum walks in synthetic mesh lattices.

Abstract:AbstractCombating the effects of disorder on light transport in micro- and nano-integrated photonic devices is of major importance from both fundamental and applied viewpoints. In ordinary waveguides, imperfections and disorder cause unwanted back-reflections, which hinder large-scale optical integration. Topological photonic structures, a new class of optical systems inspired by quantum Hall effect and topological insulators, can realize robust transport via topologically-protected unidirectional edge modes. Such waveguides are realized by the introduction of synthetic gauge fields for photons in a two-dimensional structure, which break time reversal symmetry and enable one-way guiding at the edge of the medium. Here we suggest a different route toward robust transport of light in lower-dimensional (1D) photonic lattices, in which time reversal symmetry is broken because of the non-Hermitian nature of transport. While a forward propagating mode in the lattice is amplified, the corresponding backward propagating mode is damped, thus resulting in an asymmetric transport insensitive to disorder or imperfections in the structure. Non-Hermitian asymmetric transport can occur in tight-binding lattices with an imaginary gauge field via a non-Hermitian delocalization transition and in periodically-driven superlattices. The possibility to observe non-Hermitian delocalization is suggested using an engineered coupled-resonator optical waveguide (CROW) structure.

Inverse Design of Winding Tuple for Non-Hermitian Topological Edge Modes

Abstract:The interplay between topological localization and non-Hermiticity localization in non-Hermitian crystal systems results in a diversity of shapes of topological edge modes (EMs), offering opportunities to manipulate these modes for potential topological applications. The conventional strategy for characterizing the domain of EMs is to calculate the topological invariants, but which does not provide the wavefunction forms of EMs. This leads to the the bulk-boundary correspondence typically being verified only through numerical methods. In this work, by recognizing EMs as specified solutions of eigenequation, we derive their wavefunctions in an extended non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We then inversely construct a winding tuple $\left \{ w_{\scriptscriptstyle GBZ},w_{\scriptscriptstyle BZ}\right \} $ that characterizes the existence of EMs and their spatial distribution. Moreover, we define a new spectral winding number equivalent to $w_{\scriptscriptstyle BZ}$, which is determined by the product of energies of different bands. The inverse design of topological invariants allows us to categorize the localized nature of EMs even in systems lacking sublattice symmetry, which can facilitate the manipulation and utilization of EMs in the development of novel quantum materials and devices.

Abstract:A topological phase transition and the related bulk-boundary correspondence in a class of one-dimensional non-Hermitian photonic lattice with chiral symmetry are studied. We find that the corresponding topological number should be defined by adding up winding numbers calculated under the chiral symmetry. The Wilson loop method is used to calculate this topological number. We reveal the topological phase transition in one-dimensional non-Hermitian systems with chiral symmetry and provide a convenient and general pathway to characterize the related topology.

Abstract:The topological bound states are limited to one pair in traditional one-dimensional (1D) topological chiral models as the winding number can only take the value of 0 or 1. It was increased to 2 or 3 via long-range couplings (LRCs) that were restricted to second- or third-order in recent experimental or theoretical researches. How to generate larger winding number to manipulate more topological bound states remains a challenge. Here, we propose an effective method by introducing arbitrary Nth order LRC stronger than the sum of other order couplings. The resulting winding number has been computed by getting the winding loop's envelope in parameter space. The coupling-inverted 1D photonic topological insulators supporting up to three pairs of highly localized multiple topological bound states are realized by fabricating photonic lattices with multi-layer waveguide arrays. Furthermore, these topological bound states are closely spaced, offering a promising implementation approach of multimode topological lasers in gain media. Our work highlights the advantages of LRCs in manipulating the topological phases of matter.

Abstract:The gain and loss in photonic lattices provide possibilities for many functional phenomena. In this Letter, we consider photonic topological insulators with different types of gain-loss domain walls, which will break the translational symmetry of the lattices. A method is proposed to construct effective Hamiltonians, which accurately describe states and the corresponding energies at the domain walls for different types of photonic topological insulators and domain walls with arbitrary shapes. We also consider domain-induced higher-order topological states in two-dimensional non-Hermitian Aubry-Andre??-Harper lattices and use our method to explain such phenomena successfully. Our results reveal the physics in photonic topological insulators with gain-loss domain walls, which provides advanced pathways for manipulation of nonHermitian topological states in photonic systems.
Higher-order Topological Knots and Nonreciprocal Dynamics in non-Hermitian lattices

Abstract:In two dimensions, Hermitian lattices with non-zero Chern numbers and non-Hermitian lattices with a higher-order skin effect (HOSE) bypass the constraints of the Nielsen-Ninomiya "no-go" theorem at their one-dimensional boundaries. This allows the realization of topologically protected one-dimensional edge states with nonreciprocal dynamics. However, unlike the edge states of Chern insulators, the nonreciprocal edges of HOSE phases exist only at certain edges of the two-dimensional lattice, not all, leading to corner-localized states. In this work, we investigate the topological connections between these two systems and uncover novel non-Hermitian topological phases possessing "higher-order topological knots" (HOTKs). These phases arise from multiband topology protected by crystalline symmetries and host point-gap-protected nonreciprocal edge states that circulate around the entire boundary of the two-dimensional lattice. We show that phase transitions typically separate HOTK phases from "Complex Chern insulator" phases --non-Hermitian lattices with nonzero Chern numbers protected by imaginary line gaps in the presence of time-reversal symmetry.

Abstract:Photonic platforms invariant under parity ($\mathcal{P}$), time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$), and duality ($\mathcal{D}$) can support topological phases analogous to those found in time-reversal invariant ${\mathbb{Z}_2}$ electronic systems with conserved spin. Here, we demonstrate the resilience of the underlying spin Chern phases against non-Hermitian effects, notably material dissipation. We identify that non-Hermitian, $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{D}$-symmetric, and reciprocal photonic insulators fall into two topologically distinct classes. Our analysis focuses on the topology of a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{D}$-symmetric and reciprocal parallel-plate waveguide (PPW). We discover a critical loss level in the plates that marks a topological phase transition. The Hamiltonian of the $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}\mathcal{D}$-symmetric system is found to consist of an infinite direct sum of Kane-Mele type Hamiltonians with a common band gap. This structure leads to the topological charge of the waveguide being an ill-defined sum of integers due to the particle-hole symmetry. Each component of this series corresponds to a spin-polarized edge state. Our findings present a unique instance of a topological photonic system that can host an infinite number of edge states in its band gap.

Exact Solutions Disentangle Higher-Order Topology in 2D Non-Hermitian Lattices

Abstract:We report the exact closed-form solutions for higher-order topological states as well as explicit energy-spectrum relationships in two-dimensional (2D) non-Hermitian multi-orbital lattices with generalized boundary conditions. These analytical solutions unequivocally confirm that topological edge states in a 2D non-Hermitian system which feature point-gap topology must undergo the non-Hermitian skin effect along the edge. Under double open boundary conditions, the occurrence of the non-Hermitian skin effect for either topological edge states or bulk states can be accurately predicted by our proposed winding numbers. We unveil that the zero-energy topological corner state only manifests itself on a corner where two nearby gapped edge states intersect, and thus can either disappear completely or strengthen drastically due to the non-Hermitian skin effect of gapped topological edge states. Our analytical results offer direct insight into the non-Bloch band topology in two or higher dimensions and trigger experimental investigations into related phenomena such as quadrupole topological insulators and topological lasing.

Abstract:Light can mediate effective dipole-dipole interactions between atoms or quantum emitters coupled to a common environment. Exploiting them to tailor a desired effective Hamiltonian can have major applications and advance the search for many-body phases. Quantum technologies are mature enough to engineer large photonic lattices with sophisticated structures coupled to quantum emitters. In this context, a fundamental problem is to find general criteria to tailor a photonic environment that mediates a desired effective Hamiltonian of the atoms. Among these criteria, topological properties are of utmost importance since an effective atomic Hamiltonian endowed with a non-trivial topology can be protected against disorder and imperfections. Here, we find general theorems that govern the topological properties (if any) of photon-mediated Hamiltonians in terms of both Hermitian and non-Hermitian topological invariants, thus unveiling a system-bath topological correspondence. The results depend on the number of emitters relative to the number of resonators. For a photonic lattice where each mode is coupled to a single quantum emitter, the Altland-Zirnbauer classification of topological insulators allows us to link the topology of the atoms to that of the photonic bath: we unveil the phenomena of topological preservation and reversal to the effect that the atomic topology can be the same or opposite to the photonic one, depending on Hermiticity of the photonic system and on the parity of the spatial dimension. As a consequence, the bulk-edge correspondence implies the existence of atomic boundary modes with the group velocity opposite to the photonic ones in a 2D Hermitian topological system. If there are fewer emitters than photonic modes, the atomic system is less constrained and no general photon-atom topological correspondence can be found. We show this with two counterexamples.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian models describe the physics of ubiquitous open systems with gain and loss. One intriguing aspect of non-Hermitian models is their inherent topology that can produce intriguing boundary phenomena like resilient higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) and non-Hermitian skin effects (NHSE). Recently, time-multiplexed lattices in synthetic dimensions have emerged as a versatile platform for the investigation of these effects free of geometric restrictions. Despite holding broad applications, studies of these effects have been limited to static cases so far, and full dynamical control over the non-Hermitian effects has remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of topological non-Hermitian corner states with remarkable temporal controllability and robustness in a two-dimensional photonic synthetic time lattice. Specifically, we showcase various dynamic control mechanisms for light confinement and flow, including spatial mode tapering, sequential non-Hermiticity on-off switching, dynamical corner state relocation, and light steering. Moreover, we establish the corner state's robustness in the presence of intensity modulation randomness and quantitatively determine its breakdown regime. Our findings extend non-Hermitian and topological photonic effects into higher synthetic dimensions, offering remarkable flexibility and real-time control possibilities. This opens avenues for topological classification, quantum walk simulations of many-body dynamics, and robust Floquet engineering, free from the limitations of physical geometries.

Non-Hermitian Boundary State Engineering in Anomalous Floquet Topological Insulators

Abstract:In Hermitian topological systems, the bulk-boundary correspondence strictly constrains boundary transport to values determined by the topological properties of the bulk. We demonstrate that this constraint can be lifted in non-Hermitian Floquet insulators. Provided that the insulator supports an anomalous topological phase, non-Hermiticity allows us to modify the boundary states independently of the bulk, without sacrificing their topological nature. We explore the ensuing possibilities for a Floquet topological insulator with non-Hermitian time-reversal symmetry, where the helical transport via counterpropagating boundary states can be tailored in ways that overcome the constraints imposed by Hermiticity. Non-Hermitian boundary state engineering specifically enables the enhancement of boundary transport relative to bulk motion, helical transport with a preferred direction, and chiral transport in the same direction on opposite boundaries. We explain the experimental relevance of our findings for the example of photonic waveguide lattices.

Abstract:Anomalous topological phases, where edge states coexist with topologically trivial Chern bands, can only appear in periodically driven lattices. When the driving is smooth and continuous, the bulk-edge correspondence is guaranteed by the existence of a bulk invariant known as the winding number. However, in lattices subject to periodic discrete-step walks the existence of edge states does not only depend on bulk invariants but also on the boundary. This is a consequence of the absence of an intrinsic time-dependence or micromotion in discrete-step walks. We report the observation of edge states and a simultaneous measurement of the bulk invariants in anomalous topological phases in a two-dimensional synthetic photonic lattice subject to discrete-step walks. The lattice is implemented using time multiplexing of light pulses in two coupled fibre rings, in which one of the dimensions displays real space dynamics and the other one is parametric. The presence of edge states is inherent to the periodic driving and depends on the properties of the boundary in the implemented two-band model with zero Chern number. We provide a suitable expression for the topological invariants whose calculation does not rely on micromotion dynamics.

Abstract:The ability to tailor with a high accuracy the intersite connectivity in a lattice is a crucial tool for realizing novel topological phases of matter. Here, we report the experimental realization of photonic dimer chains with long-range hopping terms of arbitrary strength and phase, providing a rich generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model which, in its conventional form, is limited to nearest-neighbor couplings only. Our experiment is based on a synthetic dimension scheme involving the frequency modes of an optical fiber loop platform. This setup provides direct access to both the band dispersion and the geometry of the Bloch wave functions throughout the entire Brillouin zone allowing us to extract the winding number for any possible configuration. Finally, we highlight a topological phase transition solely driven by a time-reversal-breaking synthetic gauge field associated with the phase of the long-range hopping, providing a route for engineering topological bands in photonic lattices belonging to the AIII symmetry class. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.183802 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Topological matter exhibits exotic properties yet phases characterized by large topological invariants are difficult to implement, despite rapid experimental progress. A promising route toward higher topological invariants is via engineered Floquet systems, particularly in photonics, where flexible control holds the potential of extending the study of conventional topological matter to novel regimes. Here we implement a one-dimensional photonic quantum walk to explore large winding numbers. By introducing partial measurements and hence loss into the system, we detect winding numbers of three and four in multistep nonunitary quantum walks, which agree well with theoretical predictions. Moreover, by probing statistical moments of the walker, we identify locations of topological phase transitions in the system and reveal the breaking of pseudounitary near topological phase boundaries. As the winding numbers are associated with nonunitary time evolution, our investigation enriches understanding of topological phenomena in nonunitary settings.
