Abstract:This study reveals how the addition of novel natural fibre along with biochar improves the load-bearing properties of composite rebar, which is made using polyester resin. The main objective is to develop and produce cleaner production composite rebar material for sustainable building applications. The biochar is prepared from waste sugarcane bagasse whereas the short fibre is prepared from areca husk. Both the fibre and filler were treated with silane and reinforced into the polyester resin. The composite rebar is prepared via moulds and cured in a hot air oven. Subsequently, the rebars were used to make beams for further load-bearing characterizations. According to results, the addition of rebar improved the composite mechanical strength and wear resistance. The solid lubricity in the composite performed well against the abrasion disc. Similarly, the water uptake is also negligible, confirming no much deviation with respect to the plain resin. Moreover, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs revealed the effective bonding as well as uniform load-sharing phenomenon. Finally, the beam characteristics revealed that the composite rebar reinforcement performed well in the flexural strength, showing near 20% improvement than the beam made using plain rebar. Thus, overall, the areca fibre and bagasse biochar outperformed in the rebar production, which also paved the path to developing eco-friendly products.
