Abstract:In order to produce an efficient glass shield of high transparency, suitable mechanical properties, and high thermal stability, a host glass network of sodium calcium manganese zinc borate (SCMZB) in the chemical formula of 25B 2 O 3 -5ZnO-5MgO-5CaO-60Na 2 O was prepared and reinforced by 20 (SCMZBBa1), 40 (SCMZBBa2), and 60 (SCMZBBa3) mol% of BaO at the expense of Na 2 O. The resulting changes in the structural, thermal, mechanical, transparency, and shielding properties due to the incorporation of BaO were extensively studied. BaO played an excellent role in improving the chemical stability of the borate glass network and increasing its resistance to hygroscopicity. BaO penetration grew the glass density, opened the network structure, and converted the bridging oxygen units (BOs) to the non-bridging ones (NBOs) up to 40 mol% of BaO, unlike at 60 mol% of BaO, where the NBOs were reconverted to the BOs, keeping the structure open. A significant compositional dependence of hardness and moduli of elasticity was observed, as hardness and moduli of longitudinal, shear, Young's, and bulk slightly increased at 20 mol% of BaO, while a considerable increase at 40 and 60 mol% was observed. The moduli of elasticity of SCMZBBa3 (60 mol% of BaO), longitudinal, shear, Young's, and bulk improved by 159.053%, 231.402%, 216.909%, and 127.036%, respectively, while hardness improved by 362.602%. The produced glasses had high thermal stability ( ∆T>100 ) and high visible light transparency ( >70% ). The optical band gap, Urbach energy, and refractive index values showed compositional dependence behavior. The addition of BaO improved the attenuation efficiency of the proposed host glass for gamma rays of energies 661.64, 1173.23, and 1332.51 keV, as the required half-value layer of SCMZBBa3 was reduced by 63.734%, 56.059%, and 53.460%, respectively. Hence, based on its outstanding mechanical properties, high thermal stability, high transparency, and effective ability to attenuate gamma rays, the SCMZBBa3 glass (60 mol% of BaO) was nominated for use as a protective shield in relevant nuclear applications such as hot cells, radiotherapy rooms, and the immobilization & disposal of radioactive wastes.
