Abstract:Problems such as bacterial resistance caused by tetracycline antibiotics pose a serious threat to human production and life and ecosystems. We prepared ZnFe2O4@ZnWO4 heterojunction nanocomposites using hydrothermal and coprecipitation methods. The micromorphology, structure, and photoelectrochemical properties were analyzed. In combination with the presence of H2O2, the photo-Fenton activity of the antibiotic tetracycline at high concentration was tested under visible light irradiation, and its catalytic mechanism was investigated. The results showed that the composition of the composite heterojunction improved the catalytic activity of the catalyst. At a pollutant concentration of 50 mg L-1 and pH 5, 30% ZnWO4/ZnFe2O4 degraded 92.1% of tetracycline in 60 min with a degradation rate of 0.0295 min-1, which was 6.7 times higher than that of pure ZnFe2O4. The results of free radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance techniques indicated that hydroxyl radical (•OH) and superoxide radical (O2-) played important roles in the photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline. Notably, the catalyst maintained a high degradation rate (80%) after five cycles. ZnFe2O4 introduced in this article may provide a promising strategy for achieving strong light absorption and is authoritative in meeting future environmental requirements.
Degradation of tetracycline by FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 photo-Fenton system in water: From performance to mechanism

Abstract:Recently, photo-Fenton technology has been widely used to degrade tetracycline (TC) because of its great efficiency and wide application range. Herein, Fe-Ni layered double hydroxides (FeNi-LDH)/Ti3C2 photo-Fenton system was constructed in this study. The results showed the introduction of Ti3C2 solved some problems of FeNi-LDH such as poor conductivity, easy aggregation, and high recombination rate of photoelectron. Benefiting from these advantages, FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 exhibited excellent TC removal rate of 94.7% while pure FeNi-LDH was only 54%. Besides, FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 possessed strong pH tolerance (2-11) and the removal efficiency was still up to 82% after the four-cycle experiment. Furthermore, the quenching experiments revealed the reaction mechanism, where ∙OH and ·O2- were the primary active radicals for degrading TC. Last, the results of the simulated wastewater treatment and the inorganic ion interference tests showed that FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 possessed practical application potential. In brief, this study shows that FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 can offer a certain theoretical basis for the actual development of hydrotalcite in heterogeneous photo-Fenton systems.

Abstract:Designing an efficient catalyst for photo-Fenton organic contaminant degradation has been an important subject intended to solve the related environmental deterioration and enormous energy crises. However, the rapid cycle of Fe3+/Fe2+ in a wide pH range based on photo-Fenton reaction is still challenging. Here, we prepare highly effective and stable Z-scheme NiFe LDH/Bi4O5I2 heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for tetracycline (TC) photodegradation. The optimized NiFe LDH/Bi4O5I2 composite (NFBOI-35) reaches more than 95% TC degradation efficiency in Fenton system under visible light irradiation. Excellent stability, low metal ions leaching concentration and wide pH applicability distinguish make NFBOI-35 be a potential candidate for TC elimination. The improved photo-Fenton performance is mainly attributed to the construction of Z-scheme heterojunction and the accelerated decomposition of H2O2, which realizes the remarkable synergy effect between photocatalysis and Fenton reaction. This work would be beneficial to design Z-scheme catalyst for photo-Fenton organic contaminants degradation and other solar energy application.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of NiFe2O4/ZnIn2S4 p-n heterojunction for efficient degradation of tetracycline

Abstract:The persistent release of tetracycline into the environment significantly endangers both ecosystems and human health. Zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn2S4) capable to degrade tetracycline pollutants under visible light irradiation has attracted extensive attentions and great effort has been devoted to augment its catalytic efficacy. In this work, we synthesized a p-n heterojunction, NiFe2O4/ZnIn2S4, to enhance the carrier migration rate and explained the intrinsic mechanism by density functional theory. When the heterojunction was formed, carriers traversed from the n-type NiFe2O4 to the p-type ZnIn2S4, instigating the emergence of a built-in electric field to facilitate the separation of carriers. 2 %-NiFe2O4/ZnIn2S4 exhibited excellent photocatalytic efficiency in tetracycline (TC) degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) removal. Compared to pure ZnIn2S4 and NiFe2O4, the TC degradation rates of 2 %-NiFe2O4/ZnIn2S4 were 2.0 times and 16.9 times higher, respectively. Additionally, 2 %-NiFe2O4/ZnIn2S4 had a saturation magnetization intensity of 3.05 emu/g, allowing for rapid recovery of the catalyst under a magnetic field. Superoxide radicals (O2-) and holes (h+) were the primary active species driving the degradation process. Furthermore, potential reaction pathways of tetracycline in this photocatalytic process were determined and bioconcentration factor and developmental toxicity of the intermediate products were accessed. This work held great potentials for wastewater treatment and provided a pathway for the development of magnetic recyclable photocatalysts.

Abstract:To improve the photogenerated electron–hole separation efficiency and the number of reactive oxygen species of g-C 3 N 4 in visible light. Herein, an interface-engineered Ni(Fe/Al)-LDHs/g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets with Fe/AlN bonds were prepared, which shows highly enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance with excellent structural stability. The interfacial structure of g-C 3 N 4 was precisely regulated by metal Fe/Al on the surface of layered double hydroxides (LDHs), which could form Fe/AlN bonds as the interfacial charge transfer channels. In addition, the metal Ni and Fe/Al on the surface of LDHs nanosheets can furnish more photocatalytic active sites and interface synergy. The obtained 7 %NiFe-LDHs/g-C 3 N 4 owns the degradation rate of 99.23 % for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in visible light. This work highlights a rational interface engineering strategy for the formation of a composite structure with interface interaction for efficient photocatalysts.

The Performance and Mechanism of Phosphotungstic Acid-Modified NiFe-LDH Heterogeneous Photo-Fenton Catalyst for Efficient Degradation of Tetracycline

Abstract:There is a serious risk to human health because of the misuse of tetracycline and ineffective wastewater treatment systems, which have left a lot of antibiotics in the environment. In this study, a composite catalyst of phosphotungstic acid-modified LDHs (PTA-LDHs) was synthesized using ion exchange technology, and the degradation performance for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) in a heterogeneous photo-Fenton system was examined. Surprisingly, PTA-LDHs could completely remove TC-HCl (30 mg L-1) within 40 min, and after conducting five consecutive cycles of experiments, the attenuation in the TC-HCl removal rate stayed within a mere 15%. Furthermore, the PTA-LDHs/H2O2/vis system maintained a removal efficiency of pollutants above 75% across various antibiotic and water quality tests, underscoring its robust performance and environmental suitability. PTA-LDHs exhibited excellent purity, and acid and alkali resistance, as well as remarkable structural stability. PTA could act as a photosensitizer, which was advantageous for extending the visible light absorption range, decreasing the bandgap width, and encouraging the migration of photogenerated carriers according to optical properties, and electrochemical tests, enhancing the catalytic performance. Free radical quenching and EPR testing indicated that the catalyst surface OH, and h+ were the main active species. Based on the experimental results and DFT calculations, possible degradation pathways and the toxicity of the intermediates of TC-HCl were proposed. In summary, a novel heterogeneous catalyst for the degradation of TC-HCl residues in water is presented. Mechanism diagram of TC-HCl degradation in the PTA-LDHs/H2O2/vis system.
Highly enhanced heterogeneous photo-Fenton process for tetracycline degradation by Fe/SCN Fenton-like catalyst

Abstract:To suppress the electron-hole recombination and enhance the electron transfer on carbon nitride, an Fe-doped porous carbon nitride catalyst (Fe/SCN) was synthesized via supramolecular self-assembly method and applied in heterogeneous Fenton activation for efficient tetracycline (TC) degradation. Various characterizations revealed that the catalyst exhibited excellent visible light capture performance and electron transfer capacity. The highest degradation efficiency and mineralization rate of TC (10 mg L-1) were achieved under neutral condition (90.3% and 61.2%, respectively) with the leaching of Fe less than 14 μg L-1. Free radical quenching experiments and spin-resonance spectroscopy characterizations revealed the dominating role of OH in TC degradation, and density functional theory calculation confirmed the formation of Fe-NX and revealed the interaction between Fe sites and H2O2. Three possible pathways of TC degradation were proposed, and the biological inhibition test revealed the potential of Fe/SCN/H2O2 system to reduce environmental risks caused by TC. This work provides a new insight into the design of metal-doped heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for the efficient degradation of antibiotic contaminants in water.

Three-dimensional Electrocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline by Nano-Feooh

Abstract:Nano-FeOOH catalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation method and characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS and BET to analyze the phase composition, surface morphology, elemental composition and specific surface area of FeOOH. Results showed that the FeOOH catalyst had large pore volume and surface area, providing more active sites for catalytic reactions. A 3D electrocatalytic system EC/PS/FeOOH was established to degrade tetracycline (TC), and the contributions of FeOOH adsorption, PS activation and electrocatalysis were investigated. It was found that the adsorption rate of TC on sole FeOOH was 42%, the degradation rate of TC in the PS/FeOOH system was 63.80%, and the degradation rate of TC in the 3D EC/PS/FeOOH system reached 72.97%, indicating the high electrocatalytic activity of FeOOH. Surface catalysis mechanism studies showed that the high catalytic activity of FeOOH could be attributed to electron transfer between Fe(II) and Fe(III) and adsorbed oxygen on its surface.
3D hierarchical Fe-doped Bi4O5I2 microflowers as an efficient Fenton photocatalyst for tetracycline degradation over a wide pH range

Abstract:Fenton reaction is proved to be an efficient method for degrading organic pollutants in wastewater. However, the narrow pH range greatly restricts the application of Fenton reaction. Herein, the 3D hierarchical Fe-doped Bi4O5I2 microflowers have been synthesized via a hybrid solvothermal-calcination method and applied in a photo-Fenton system for efficient removal of tetracycline (TC). The optimized Fe-doping Bi4O5I2 (11Fe-BOI) microflowers present more than 90% degradation efficiency over the pH range of 3.0–9.0 in Fenton system under visible light irradiation, and the reaction rate constant in 11Fe-BOI/H2O2/Vis system is 2.79 × 10−2 min−1, which is 19.11, 1.85 and 7.71 times higher than that of H2O2/Vis (1.46 × 10−3 min−1), 11Fe-BOI/Vis (1.51 × 10−2 min−1) and 11Fe-BOI/H2O2 (3.61 × 10−3 min−1) systems, respectively. The synergy effect of photocatalysis and Fenton reaction plays a pivotal role for the TC degradation process via accelerating the separation of carriers and the generation of reactive oxygen species. The scavenging experiments and EPR results manifest that O2 – and OH are dominant active species during the TC degradation process. This work provides great prospect to fabricate an efficient non-noble metal photocatalyst for photo-Fenton degradation of antibiotics.

Abstract:To achieve efficient degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), we employed a straightforward hydrothermal method to enhance the physicochemical properties of the initial lanthanum ferrite by substituting different ratios of Ni for Fe. Ni doping significantly reduced the energy band band gap of LFNO-5 from 1.93 eV to 1.76 eV, enhanced the visible light response range and photocurrent response, reduced the impedance, and generated more oxygen vacancies. The photocatalytic activity of the target materials was investigated using tetracycline hydrochloride as a model pollutant under the activation of a minute amount of potassium persulfate (PMS) and visible light. After 60 min of exposure to light, LFNO-5/PMS achieved a 90% degradation of TC (k = 0.03374 min −1 ), surpassing PMS (k = 0.00710 min −1 ) by a factor of 4.75 and LFO/PMS (k = 0.01781 min −1 ) by a factor of 1.89. The redox cycling of Fe III /Fe II and Ni III /Ni II in LFNO-5 facilitated an effective synergistic photocatalytic process. Vacancies (h + ) and sulphate radicals (SO 4 − ) played a crucial role in pollutant degradation within the LFNO/PMS system. Furthermore, the LFNO-5/PMS system exhibited excellent resistance to various inorganic ions and humic acids, while delivering noteworthy performance even in the presence of environmental disturbances. The degradation efficiency of the catalyst did not decrease significantly after several cycles, and the metal leaching rate was low, with good stability and reusability. Furthermore, Ni-doped LFO not only improved the activation efficiency for PMS, but also demonstrated the superiority of the LFNO-5 catalyst as a promising activator for PMS effluent remediation.

Abstract:The photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in aqueous solution is a typical heterogeneous reaction, and thus the design of efficient photocatalysts for tetracycline degradation should revolve the process features of heterogeneous reaction closely. In the present work, TiO2-P/g-C3N4 composites with abundant surface hydroxyls were prepared by coupled g-C3N4 nanosheets with plasma treated TiO2 (TiO2-P) nanoparticles. The resultant TiO2-P/g-C3N4 as photocatalysts showed higher activity for the degradation of tetracycline in aqueous solution than g-C3N4, TiO2, TiO2-P and TiO2/g-C3N4 under visible light irradiation. The better activity of TiO2-P/g-C3N4 photocatalysts for tetracycline degradation could be ascribed to the good synergy between TiO2-P and g-C3N4. Specifically, due to the presence of surface hydroxyls on TiO2-P, the tetracycline adsorption activity, electrons-holes separation property as well as H2O2 activating activity of TiO2-P/g-C3N4 during tetracycline degradation were improved. By integrating the property of g-C3N4 photocatalyst in H2O2 production, as well as the property of TiO2-P in activating H2O2 into •OH and •O2 -, efficient photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline was achieved in the TiO2-P/g-C3N4 photocatalytic system. Our study on TiO2/g-C3N4 composite photocatalyst provides helpful inspiration to design photocatalysts with high-activity for the photo-Fenton degradation of organic pollutants.

Enhanced visible light photo-Fenton-like degradation of tetracyclines by expanded perlite supported FeMo3Ox/g-C3N4 floating Z-scheme catalyst

Abstract:In the conventional Fenton system, the relatively low efficiency of Fe (II) regeneration is a significant drawback. To address this shortcoming, a novel floating Z-scheme photo-Fenton catalyst FeMo3Ox/g-C3N4/EP was prepared by a facile dip-calcination method, in which iron and molybdenum oxides with mixed valence states (FeMo3Ox) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were loaded on the expanded perlite. The removal efficiencies reached the maximum at 98.0%, 93.1% and 97.1% for tetracycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline, respectively, after 60 min dark adsorption and 60 min photo-Fenton process. The aid of dual ion (Fe and Mo) synergy system and photoreduction by Z-scheme photocatalyst enhanced the Fe (II) regeneration, resulting in the excellent performance. Radical scavenger experiment, electron spin resonance spectra (ESR) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were used to confirm the mechanism of free radicals' formation and Fe/Mo redox cycling. ·OH, ·O2- and 1O2 played important roles in the pollutant's degradation, while the generation of ·O2- was enhanced due to the floatability in this system. The possible degradation pathways of TC were put forward according to the results of mass spectrum and Orbital-Weighted Fukui Function. Overall, this work provides new insights on the cooperation between iron-based mix oxides and semiconductor in the photo-Fenton system.
Facile Preparation of Nanostructured NixZn1−xFe2O4/CNTs Composites with Enhanced Visible-Light-driven Photocatalytic Activity for Tetracycline Degradation

Abstract:NixZn1−xFe2O4/CNTs composite photocatalysts were prepared via a facile hydrothermal method, and their physical and chemical properties were investigated. The effect of different Ni doping amounts on the photocatalytic activity of NixZn1−xFe2O4 and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4/CNTs photocatalysts containing different amounts of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated for their ability to degrade tetracycline (TC) in wastewater. The results showed that Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4/CNTs (5% CNTs) had the highest photocatalytic activity, achieving a TC degradation of 96%. The origin of the excellent performance of the photocatalysts, as well as the photodegradation mechanism, were also discussed. Effective electron–hole separation is believed to be responsible for the significantly improved photocatalytic activity. After four photocatalytic degradation experiments, the composite photocatalyst retained its high photocatalytic activity, and the results showed that the composite photocatalysts were highly stable and could be magnetically separated.
Highly efficient heterogeneous electro-Fenton reaction for tetracycline degradation by Fe-Ni LDH@ZIF-67 modified carbon cloth cathode: Mechanism and toxicity assessment

Abstract:In this work, a novel and efficient Fe-Ni LDH@ZIF-67 catalyst modified carbon cloth (CC) cathode was developed for tetracycline (TC) degradation in heterogeneous electro-Fenton (Hetero-EF) process. Compared to Fe-Ni LDH/CC (75.7%), TC degradation rate of Fe-Ni LDH@ZIF-67/CC cathode increased to 95.6% within 60 min. The synergistic effect of hetero-EF and anodic oxidation process accelerated electron transfer, the maximum H2O2 production of Fe-Ni LDH@ZIF-67/CC electrode reached 264 mg/L, improving utilization efficiency of H2O2. The cathode possessing a satisfied TC degradation performance over a wide pH (3-9). Free radical capture experiment revealed the collaboration of ·O2-, ·OH, and 1O2 play a significant role in TC degradation. The 5 cycles experiment and metal ion leaching experiment showed that the proposed Fe-Ni LDH@ZIF-67/CC has good recyclability and stability. In addition, the proposed Fe-Ni LDH@ZIF-67/CC cathode achieved satisfying performance in real water (tap water: 97.3%, lake water: 97.7%), demonstrating the possibility for practical application. TC degradation pathways were proposed by theory analysis and experimental results. The toxicity of TC intermediates was reduced by Hetero-EF degradation according to Toxicity Estimation Software Tool and Escherichia coli growth inhibition experiments. This work provides a novel modified cathode to improve removal efficiency of antibiotics in wastewater.

Abstract:The exploitation of magnetic recyclable and effective degradation photocatalysts with wide-pH-range response was essential to the practical application in the photo-Fenton process. In this study, Cd/CdS coupling with CuO/Fe2O3/CuFe2O4(CF) was employed to prepare an efficient and recyclable photocatalyst Cd/CdS-CuO/Fe2O3/CuFe2O4(CCCF). The obtained CCCF was utilized to activate H2O2 for the photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline after verifying optical properties and energy band structures. The photo-Fenton degradation performance of CCCF on tetracycline was researched in the effects of photocatalyst concentration, initial pH and H2O2 volume. The photo-Fenton removal efficiency of CCCF+H2O2 was capable of achieving 82.43 % under the optimal reaction condition, which was apparently higher than that of Cd/CdS and CF. The enhanced degradation efficiency could be owned to the effective carriers separation thanks to the p-n heterojunction. The development of such photocatalysts offers a new approach to degrading organic pollutants from industrial wastewater, making it a valuable tool for contaminants degradation.

Abstract:In this work, magnetic Fe3O4/MIL-125 nanoparticles were prepared by hydrothermal method and used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride. The Fe3O4/MIL-25 composite exhibits an enhanced degradation percentage of tetracycline hydrochloride via heterogeneous Fenton-like process and photocatalysis. At optimal conditions, 97% of tetracycline hydrochloride (50 ppm) can be degraded in 50 min with hydrogen peroxide under ultraviolet light. The Fe3O4/MIL-125 can be easily separated from solution and exhibit excellent reusability and stability. The degradation percentage of tetracycline hydrochloride still reaches 85% after four cycles of reuse. Further radical inhibition experiments confirmed that •OH and •O2− formed and function in the photo-Fenton system. The electron spin resonance also confirms this view. These results show that magnetic Fe3O4/MIL-125 under ultraviolet light irradiation increases photo-generated electronic transfer through enhancing Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle to generate more hydroxyl radical. Accordingly, the degradation percentage of the target pollutant is significantly improved.

Abstract:Recent years, many scholars have been greatly intrigued by the large amounts of emerging antibiotics pollutants (such as tetracycline, penicillin, etc.) in natural water environments. Photo-Fenton oxidation, a highly advanced oxidation technique, has been seen as a promising way to effectively break down these pollutants by generating a great deal of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, iron phthalocyanine nanodots (FePc)/ultra-thin porous carbon nitride (UPCN) nanocomposites were successfully prepared by thermal polymerization and calcination processes. In the system with a small amount (10 μL) of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and natural pH conditions, the 1%-FePc/UPCN nanocatalcatalyst had the best degradation effect, and the TC removal rate reached 89% within 20 min and 99% within 60 min. The excellent performance of the nano-composites is ascribed to the large surface area, multiple active sites, small pore size, easy excitation and fast transfers of photogenerated carriers induced by π - π bond. In addition, the improvement of the degradation of TC is also due to the synergistic effect of the photocatalytic reaction center dominated by UPCN and Fenton reaction center dominated by FePc in the system, simultaneously. In this study, a synergistic dual-reaction center catalytic system was constructed to provide new insights and strategies for the degradation of organic pollutants in natural water environments.

Abstract:A novel α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 composite was successfully designed by loading α-Fe2O3 hexagonal flakes on the spherical surface of g-C3N4 to enhance visible light absorption and manipulate the directed transfer of electrons and holes. The results of UV–vis DRS, XPS valence band, and Mott-Schottky calculations indicated that the g-C3N4 microspheres obtained after morphology modulation have improved absorption of visible light and the band gap structure has been changed. The catalyst achieved 90.7% removal of tetracycline in 120 min under visible light irradiation and hydrogen peroxide, which was 58.2 and 37.6% higher relative to the photocatalytic and Fenton-like systems alone, respectively. It was shown that the significantly enhanced catalytic activity was attributed to the synergistic effect of α-Fe2O3 and g-C3N4. In addition, the possible degradation pathways of tetracycline were investigated by HPLC-MS to identify intermediates. This work provided insight into the construction of Z-scheme heterojunction photo-Fenton catalysts for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Herein, Fe-g-C3N4/Bi2WO6 Z-scheme heterojunction is elaborately designed to build a photo-Fenton system for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). In this study, the H2O2 decomposition performance of the Z-scheme heterojunction has been improved due to the doping of iron, improve photogenerated electrons transportability and facilitate spread of radicals, according to the efficacy analyses, and trapping experiment, ESR analysis as well as degradation pathways of TC. Moreover, DFT theoretical results suggest that the Z-scheme transfer route coupled with the generated photo–Fenton process builds a Z-scheme-charge-transfer platform for remarkable degradation of emerging pollutants, and the formation of Fe-N4 sites induces a spin polarization of the material and also introduces a defect state in the original forbidden band, which leads to extremely activity for the removal of TC in the photo-Fenton system. The study shows that 1O2 and •O2− are the main active species participating in the degradation process.

Abstract:Fe-N-C materials have received increasing attention, due to its distinctive catalytic activity. However, the Fe-N coordination number dependence of catalytic ability and mechanism for H2O2 activation remain elusive. Herein, a series of Fe-N-C heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts with different Fe-N coordination number were prepared for tetracycline degradation. The results demonstrated that samples with Fe-N4 structure exhibited high activity. The excellent performance was mainly ascribed to the high adsorption capacity and the formation of superoxide radicals (•O2−) catalyzed by Fe linked to pyridinic nitrogen. The intermediates and degradation pathways of tetracycline degradation by Fe-N-C/H2O2 system were analyzed by Liquid Chromatography Coupled to Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Furthermore, we applied our Fe-N-C catalysts to treat simulated pharmaceutical wastewater with high tetracycline degradation capacity despite high concentrations of organic matter such as oxalic acid and various ionic interferences. Our work reveals the dependence of the activation H2O2 on the Fe-N coordination environment and the degradation mechanism of these catalysts. It provides insights into the prospects for tuning the catalyst in practical applications.
