Abstract:To suppress the electron-hole recombination and enhance the electron transfer on carbon nitride, an Fe-doped porous carbon nitride catalyst (Fe/SCN) was synthesized via supramolecular self-assembly method and applied in heterogeneous Fenton activation for efficient tetracycline (TC) degradation. Various characterizations revealed that the catalyst exhibited excellent visible light capture performance and electron transfer capacity. The highest degradation efficiency and mineralization rate of TC (10 mg L-1) were achieved under neutral condition (90.3% and 61.2%, respectively) with the leaching of Fe less than 14 μg L-1. Free radical quenching experiments and spin-resonance spectroscopy characterizations revealed the dominating role of OH in TC degradation, and density functional theory calculation confirmed the formation of Fe-NX and revealed the interaction between Fe sites and H2O2. Three possible pathways of TC degradation were proposed, and the biological inhibition test revealed the potential of Fe/SCN/H2O2 system to reduce environmental risks caused by TC. This work provides a new insight into the design of metal-doped heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for the efficient degradation of antibiotic contaminants in water.

Highly efficient treatment of tetracycline using coupled electro-Fenton and electrocoagulation process: Mechanism and toxicity assessment

Abstract:In this study, a novel carbon fiber brush (CFB) electrode was designed using carbon fiber filaments and conductive metals. It was used as the cathode to construct an efficient coupled electro-Fenton and electrocoagulation (EF-EC) process for tetracycline (TC) treatment. An optimal 97.9% removal rate of 10 mg L −1 TC was achieved within 20 min. The coupled process is less pH-dependent and more effective in treating TC compared to the traditional individual electro-Fenton (EF) or electrocoagulation (EC) process, achieving efficient TC removal under neutral pH conditions. The removal rate of 10 mg L −1 TC consistently remained above 92% at 20 min after ten cycle experiments using the same electrodes in a Fe-CFB system (92.7–97.9%), indicating excellent reusability and stability of the CFB cathode. Mechanism analysis showed both EF and EC processes were involved in the system. Radicals (such as •OH and SO 4 − •) generated by EF contributed to the degradation of TC, yielding nine intermediates. Coagulants (such as Fe(OH) 3 ) generated by EC contributed to the removal of TC. Toxicity prediction results indicated that over half of the nine intermediates exhibited lower biotoxicity compared to TC. This study provides a feasible alternative cathode for the efficient treatment of TC using EF-EC process.

Effective Heterogeneous Fenton-Like Degradation of Antibiotics by Ferroferric Oxide Nanoparticle Coated Reduced Iron Powder with Accelerated Fe(II)/Fe(III) Redox Cycling

Abstract:Heterogeneous Fenton-like process based on Fe-based catalysts is an effective technology to degrade the emerging organic pollutants in the water and wastewater such as tetracycline (TC). However, the kinetically limited redox cycling between Fe2+ and Fe3+ is still a persistent challenge for its widespread application. To address this issue, we designed a novel Fe-based catalyst by coating reduced iron powder (RIP) with ferroferric oxide nanoparticles (FONP@RIP) using a simple chemical co-precipitation method. The reduced iron could rapidly reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II) and accelerate the cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III) in the heterogenous Fenton-like system. Benefiting from the accelerated cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III), TC could be efficiently degraded in the FONP@RIP/H2O2 system over a wide pH range 3-6, with a removal efficiency of 94.5% within 60 min. The predominant reactive oxygen species were identified as •OH and HO2•. Based on the identified intermediates, the possible pathway of TC degradation was deduced and the toxicity of pollutants could also be significantly reduced during the degradation process. Moreover, FONP@RIP exhibited stable catalytic performance during the multiple cyclic tests with only a marginal loss of catalytic components. This study presents a new design strategy of catalyst for heterogeneous Fenton-like processes, which provides a promising way for the degradation of residual antibiotics in water and wastewater.

Abstract:Recently, photo-Fenton technology has been widely used to degrade tetracycline (TC) because of its great efficiency and wide application range. Herein, Fe-Ni layered double hydroxides (FeNi-LDH)/Ti3C2 photo-Fenton system was constructed in this study. The results showed the introduction of Ti3C2 solved some problems of FeNi-LDH such as poor conductivity, easy aggregation, and high recombination rate of photoelectron. Benefiting from these advantages, FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 exhibited excellent TC removal rate of 94.7% while pure FeNi-LDH was only 54%. Besides, FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 possessed strong pH tolerance (2-11) and the removal efficiency was still up to 82% after the four-cycle experiment. Furthermore, the quenching experiments revealed the reaction mechanism, where ∙OH and ·O2- were the primary active radicals for degrading TC. Last, the results of the simulated wastewater treatment and the inorganic ion interference tests showed that FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 possessed practical application potential. In brief, this study shows that FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 can offer a certain theoretical basis for the actual development of hydrotalcite in heterogeneous photo-Fenton systems.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) is widely-used antibiotic pollutant with high toxicity, refractory, persistence and bacteriostasis, and its removal from water needs to be enhanced. In this work, a novel Graphite-UiO-66(Zr)/Ti electrode was successfully prepared and evaluated for electrochemical oxidation degradation of TC. The electrochemical performance tests indicate the Graphite-UiO-66(Zr)/Ti electrode had higher electrochemical oxidation activity, which achieved higher TC removal efficiency (98.1% ± 1.5%) than Ti plate (65.2% ± 3.5%), Graphite-MIL-53(Al)/Ti electrode (79.5% ± 2.9%) and Graphite-MIL-100(Fe)/Ti electrode (89.0% ± 2.6%). The influence of operating condition was also systematically studied, and the optimized condition was pH 5.0, 20 mA/cm2 current density and 0.1 M electrolyte (Na2SO4). Through the liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS), the TC degradation pathway by Graphite-UiO-66(Zr)/Ti electrode oxidation was proposed. Under the •OH free radical oxidative decomposition effect, the double bond, phenolic group and amine group of TC were attacked. TC was transformed into intermediate product ① (m/z = 447), then was further degraded to intermediates ② (m/z = 401) and ③ (m/z = 417). The latter was fragmented into small fractions ④ (m/z = 194), ⑤but-2-enedioic acid (m/z = 116) and ⑥oxalic acid (m/z = 90, the proposed intermediate). In addition, TC removal remained at 89.6% ± 2.7% in the sixth cycle of operation, which confirmed the efficient reusability and stability for antibiotics removal from water.
Degradation of tetracycline under a wide pH range in a heterogeneous photo bio-electro-fenton system using FeMn-LDH/g-C3N4 cathode: Performance and mechanism

Abstract:The widespread use of antibiotics and the inefficiency of traditional degradation treatments pose threats to the environment and human health. Previous studies have reported the potential of bio-electro-Fenton (BEF) processes for antibiotic removal. However, some drawbacks, such as a strict pH range of 2-3 and iron sludge generation, limit their large-scale application. Thus, to overcome the narrow pH range of traditional BEF processes, a photo-BEF (PBEF) system was established using a novel FeMn-layered double hydroxide (LDH)/graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) (FM/CN) composite cathode. The performance of the PBEF system was investigated by degrading tetracycline (TC) under low-power LED lamp irradiation. The results indicated that the pH range of the PBEF system could be expanded to 3-11 using an FM/CN cathode, which exhibited a TC removal efficiency of 63.0%-75.9%. The highest TC removal efficiency was achieved at pH 7. The efficient mineralization of TC by the PBEF system can be high, up to 67.6%. In addition, the TC removal mechanism was discussed in terms of reactive oxygen species, TC degradation intermediate analyses, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Strong oxidative hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were the dominant reactive oxidizing species in the PBEF system, followed by ·O2- and h+. Three pathways of TC degradation were proposed based on the analysis of intermediates, and the reactive sites attacked by electrophilic reagents were explored using DFT modeling. In addition, the overall toxicity of TC degradation intermediates effectively decreased in the PBEF system. This work offers deep insights into the TC removal mechanisms and performance of the PBEF system over a wide pH range of 3-11.

Abstract:Designing an efficient catalyst for photo-Fenton organic contaminant degradation has been an important subject intended to solve the related environmental deterioration and enormous energy crises. However, the rapid cycle of Fe3+/Fe2+ in a wide pH range based on photo-Fenton reaction is still challenging. Here, we prepare highly effective and stable Z-scheme NiFe LDH/Bi4O5I2 heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for tetracycline (TC) photodegradation. The optimized NiFe LDH/Bi4O5I2 composite (NFBOI-35) reaches more than 95% TC degradation efficiency in Fenton system under visible light irradiation. Excellent stability, low metal ions leaching concentration and wide pH applicability distinguish make NFBOI-35 be a potential candidate for TC elimination. The improved photo-Fenton performance is mainly attributed to the construction of Z-scheme heterojunction and the accelerated decomposition of H2O2, which realizes the remarkable synergy effect between photocatalysis and Fenton reaction. This work would be beneficial to design Z-scheme catalyst for photo-Fenton organic contaminants degradation and other solar energy application.

Abstract:In the Fenton-like processes, the resources that exist in the system itself (e.g., dissolved oxygen, electron-rich pollutants) are often overlooked. Herein, a novel CuCo-LDO/CN composite catalyst with a strong "metal-π" effect was fabricated by in situ calcination which could activate dissolved oxygen to generate active oxygen species and degrade the electron-rich pollutants directly. The CuCo-LDO/CN (1:10) with the largest specific surface aera, most C–O-M bonds and least oxygen vacancies exhibited the best catalytic performance for tetracycline (TC)degradation (TC removal efficiency 93.2% and mineralization efficiency 40%, respectively, after 40 min at neutral pH) compared to CuCo-LDO and other CuCo-LDO/CN composite catalysts. In the absence of H 2 O 2 , dissolved oxygen could be activated by the catalyst to generate O 2 · − and ·OH, which contributed to approximately 20.7% of TC degradation, providing a faster and cost-effective way for TC removal from wastewater. While in the presence of H 2 O 2 , it was activated by CuCo-LDO/CN to generate·OH as the dominant reactive oxygen species and meanwhile TC transferred electrons to H 2 O 2 through C–O-M bonds, accelerating the Cu + /Cu 2+ and Co 2+ /Co 3+ redox cycles. The possible degradation pathways of TC were proposed, and the environmental hazard of TC is greatly mitigated according to toxicity prediction.

Abstract:Fe-MOF is one of the highly-promising Fenton-like catalysts. However, the shape of powder and low Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle efficiencies restrict its applications. In this research, MIL-101(Fe) was incorporated into a chitosan (CS) matrix to obtain easy-recyclable MIL-101(Fe)@CS beads as Fenton-like catalysts for tetracycline (TC) degradation. The CS partially wrapped the octahedral MIL-101(Fe) particles for protection and dispersion. The MIL-101(Fe)@CS/H 2 O 2 system demonstrated better TC removal efficiency (∼90.00 % within 140 min), with a pseudo-first-order kinetic constant 3.5 times higher than that of the MIL-101(Fe)/H 2 O 2 system. In addition, the reaction system exhibited a wider pH application range (5.12 – 12.96), higher H 2 O 2 utilization rate (70 %), better interference resistance of the common anions in water, excellent reusability (94.10 % degradation efficiency retained over five cycles), and lower risk of secondary pollution with Fe ions (1.47 mg/L). Furthermore, theoretical evaluations and antibacterial tests revealed that the MIL-101(Fe)@CS/H 2 O 2 system effectively reduced the potential risk of TC in the ecosystem. A mechanistic study showed that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were the main reactive species involved in the reaction and that the presence of CS accelerated the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle. This study offers an immobilization strategy to optimize the catalytic performance of Fe-MOFs and improve their practical application, providing theoretical and technical support for refractory organic degradation in wastewater by Fenton-like processes.

Halothane hepatitis after jejunoileal bypass.

Abstract:A case of halothane hepatitis occurring 14 months after jejunoileal bypass for morbid obesity in a 49-year-old woman is described. Hepatic dysfunction after bypass procedures is especially seen in the weight losing phase, and has been ascribed to protein malnutrition. Halothane is considered immunogenic and it is possible that the hepatitis was provoked by repeated halothane administrations due to the patient's altered immunological competence.

Abstract:Facing the constraints of critical agglomeration and poor reusability of CuFe2O4 in catalytic applications, the feasibility of synthesizing a composite catalyst using carbon coating technology for efficient TC removal with enhanced PDS activity was investigated. The composite catalyst (CuFe2O4@C) can stimulate both radical (SO4 •- and HO•) and non-radical (1O2) pathways to dominate the catalytic reaction for removing 95.7% of the TC in 60min. Meanwhile, the defective structure of the external carbon layer protected the internal CuFe2O4 from excessive oxidation, allowing the CuFe2O4@C to maintain over 90% TC removal after 5 cycles with less interference from inorganic anions, demonstrating significant catalytic performance and satisfactory reusability. Finally, the DFT calculations and TEST evaluation were performed to discuss the structural properties of TC and its toxicity assessment during the whole degradation process, while three possible degradation pathways were proposed. Significantly, the carbon-coated composite catalysts of potential universal applicability for multi-pathway PDS activation offered an attractive new strategy for the effective degradation of antibiotic wastewater. Environmental Implication Tetracycline (TC) has been identified as one of the most widely used antibiotics in the world with irreversible effects on humans and the environment if not treated thoroughly. The composite catalysts synthesized with carbon coated technology allowed for the efficient removal of TC from the aqueous environment in a multi-path manner and maintained a high level of reusability. The eco-friendliness of the whole TC removal process was further demonstrated by DFT calculations and TEST evaluation.

Abstract:Spinel oxides can be considered effective heterogeneous catalysts in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for wastewater decontamination . However, the intrinsic characteristics of agglomeration and metal ion leaching impede its further application. In this work, to further improve the catalytic efficiency and stability of the catalyst, ZIF-8 was employed as the candidate and further etched by tannic acid (TA) to obtain a core-shell structure with less mass transfer resistance. Following this, CoFe 2 O 4 was anchored on TA-ZIF-8 matrix via a hydrothermal method. Benefiting from the tailored core-shell structure and high activity of CoFe 2 O 4 , the as-prepared CoFe 2 O 4 @TA-ZIF-8 catalyst shortened the mass transfer distance of radical to target pollutant, thus realizing high radical utilization efficiency. Accordingly, 98.1% of tetracycline (TC) can be eliminated in 30 min with kinetic constants 3.15 times higher than pristine CoFe 2 O 4 . Besides, the TC degradation efficiency can still maintain 84.1% after five consecutive cycles with cobalt leaching lower than 0.306 mg/L, showing favorable stability compared with pristine CoFe 2 O 4 . Furthermore, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments exhibited that singlet oxygen and sulfate radicals play dominant roles in TC degradation processes. This work fabricates an efficient CoFe 2 O 4 @TA-ZIF-8 heterogeneous catalyst for degrading refractory TC, which may possess potential applications in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Developing a sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective heterogeneous catalyst for advanced oxidation processes is challenging in wastewater remediation. Herein, chitosan intercalated CoFe-layered double hydroxide was first employed as a precursor to fabricate a novel CoFe2O4-CoO/N-doped carbon composite (CoFe-LDO/NC) via a simple “in-situ coprecipitation-calcination” method. The resulting CoFe-LDO/NC was carefully characterized and employed to degrade tetracycline (TC) with the assistance of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Under the optimum conditions (30 mg L−1 TC, 0.4 g L−1 catalyst, 0.4 g L−1 PMS, pH = 5), the degradation efficiency and mineralization degree reached 97.6% and 60.7% within 30 min, respectively. The superior activity of CoFe-LDO/NC was ascribed to its well-dispersed metal nanoparticles, large specific surface area (230.7 m2 g−1), hierarchical porous structure, and intensified electron transfer efficiency. The quenching test revealed that both the sulfate radicals and singlet oxygen were the dominant active species in the system. The degradation mechanism and TC evolution route were speculated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Escherichia coli growth inhibition test exhibited remarkable detoxification of TC solution after degradation. Moreover, CoFe-LDO/NC could be easily collected by magnetism, and 94.3% of its original activity was retained after five cycles. This work offers a green and scalable approach for the rational design of heterogeneous Co-based catalysts for degradation.

Abstract:Antibiotic pollution has posed a serious threat to water environments. To cope with this issue, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been employed and exhibited effective removability. However, most of LDHs adsorb antibiotics for water decontamination, which is difficult to degrade the pollutants and usually takes a quite long treatment time. In this work, Mn doped NiAl-LDHs electrode was synthesized for antibiotic degradation with target pollutant tetracycline (TC). The removal efficiency of TC was then investigated by conducting electro-oxidation with Mn doped NiAl-LDHs anode. Specifically, some Mn doped NiAl-LDHs nanoflowers were shed from NF substrate during the oxidation process, thus forming a 3D-like electrode device and facilitating TC removal. Meanwhile, due to particle electrode-like architecture and electro-oxidation of the composite electrode, high concentration of TC can be removed quickly in a short time, and the removal efficiency can reach 92.6% in 5 min.
Classification of pulmonary pathology from breath sounds using the wavelet packet transform and an extreme learning machine

Abstract:Abstract Background: Auscultation is a medical procedure used for the initial diagnosis and assessment of lung and heart diseases. From this perspective, we propose assessing the performance of the extreme learning machine (ELM) classifiers for the diagnosis of pulmonary pathology using breath sounds. Methods: Energy and entropy features were extracted from the breath sound using the wavelet packet transform. The statistical significance of the extracted features was evaluated by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The extracted features were inputted into the ELM classifier. Results: The maximum classification accuracies obtained for the conventional validation (CV) of the energy and entropy features were 97.36% and 98.37%, respectively, whereas the accuracies obtained for the cross validation (CRV) of the energy and entropy features were 96.80% and 97.91%, respectively. In addition, maximum classification accuracies of 98.25% and 99.25% were obtained for the CV and CRV of the ensemble features, respectively. Conclusion: The results indicate that the classification accuracy obtained with the ensemble features was higher than those obtained with the energy and entropy features.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) is a common antibiotic that is eco-toxic and readily develops bacterial resistance, so it must be removed from the water system. Herein, first-time non-metal (Sulphur) dopped Zinc Ferrite (S-ZnFe2O4) was prepared through a single-step calcining process to study the tetracycline removal performance from water. The effects of catalyst dose, initial pH, co-existing anions, and H2O2 concentration on tetracycline removal were explored. The related degradation kinetics were studied using various models with experimental data, and it turned out that S-ZnFe2O4 exhibited an optimum tetracycline removal efficiency of 95.41% after 70 min, which is much better than the majority of PhotoFenton catalysts. Furthermore, the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching studies revealed that hydroxyl radicals (*OH) and hole (h+) production led to fast tetracycline degradation in the Vis/S-ZnFe2O4/H2O2 system. In particular, the S-ZnFe2O4 demonstrated superparamagnetic properties and high stability, enabling effective catalysis recovery and utilization via an external magnetic field. Based on the degradation products identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), three possible degradation pathways of TC were proposed in the Vis/S-ZnFe2O4/H2O2 system. In addition, a significant amount of mineralization was found as total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiencies were 84.4% within 70 min. The toxicity evaluation with activated sludge showed that the TC solution toxicity increased during the first 30 min, but later on significantly decreased as the oxidation proceeded. This work indicates the S-ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles and gives a new outlook for photo Fenton degradation to reduce the amount and toxicity of antibiotics (TC) effectively in water supplies. Enabling highly concentrated tetracycline degradation with tailored FeCo nanocrystals in porous graphitic carbon fiber

Abstract:Eliminating highly concentrated antibiotic wastewater by transition metal catalyst-assisted AOPs is challenging. Herein, by varying the metal precursor composition (Co/Fe ratios of 1/1, 1.5/2/3), alloyed Co 7 Fe 3 nanocrystals or spinel-like CoFe 2 O 4 can be switched and both confined within the porous N-doped graphitic carbon fibers by electrospinning and controlled graphitization. Impressively, iron precursors played a dual role in working as reactive centers and main activators for the creation of porous carbon networks affording improved accessibility to catalytic sites and easy tetracycline (TC) diffusion effect. The catalytic activity of the resulting materials was closely related to surface metal valence and composition. Notably, the CoFe 2 O 4 exhibited a significant improvement in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) adsorption and activation, explained by the present electron-deficient Co and Fe synergetic sites together with the interesting Jahn–Teller effect. Fe 1 Co 2 /CNF demonstrated the highest efficiency in degrading TC, achieving a reaction rate constant of 0.4647 min −1 with a low activation energy of 9.3 kJ·mol −1 , nearly a 7.5-fold enhancement compared to Fe 1 Co 3 /CNF (0.062 min −1 ). The reaction mechanism and the role of reactive oxidative species revealed a synergy of ·SO 4 − , ·OH, ·O 2 − and 1 O 2 . Wherein, ·O 2 − plays a more dominant role in the degradation of TC than other reactive species. Additionally, a reinforced electron-transfer pathway in the Fe 1 Co 2 /CNF system during PMS interaction was demonstrated. Furthermore, the degradation routes of TC were unraveled, and the toxicity of various intermediate by-products was assessed. Importantly, our continuous flow-type TC degradation process and light-driven photothermal strengthened reaction process demonstrated consistent performance, thereby offering a promising approach for tackling highly concentrated antibiotic wastewater. Abstract:AbstractThe perovskite manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 nanoparticle/carbon nanofiber (LCMO/CNF) nanocomposites are developed by annealing the electrospun polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) mixed with nitrates (manganous nitrate, lanthanum (III) nitrate, and calcium nitrate) to work as electrocatalysts for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). The results show that the LCMO/CNFs fabricated with annealing at 250 °C for 120 min in the air atmosphere and subsequent calcination at 650 °C for 60 min possess an outstanding TC degradation performance. The TC degradation percentage (DP%) could reach 94.0% for 10 mg L−1 of TC solution with 0.1 mol L−1 of Na2SO4 as supporting electrolyte within only 1 h at a bias voltage of 1.0 V (vs. SCE). The LCMO/CNF-modified electrode possesses an average power consumption of 5.41 kWh kg−1 and the overall Faraday efficiency of 46.37% after 180 min of treatment, revealing a high efficiency and a relatively low cost. The TC DP% is changed from 87.8 to 84.8% after five cycles of electrocatalytic process for LCMO/CNF-modified electrode, implying an excellent durability, recyclability, and reusability. The TC degradation mechanism and pathways have also been explored. The results exhibit that the LCMO/CNFs could thoroughly electrocatalytically degrade TC into carbon dioxide and water at the end. This work provides a novel electrocatalyst for treatment of antibiotics contaminated wastewater with relatively low cost.

Synergy of oxygen reduction for H2O2 production and electro-fenton induced by atomic hydrogen over a bifunctional cathode towards water purification

Abstract:In the Electro-Fenton (EF) process, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is produced in situ by a two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e ORR), which is further activated by electrocatalysts to generate reactive oxygen specieces (ROS). However, the selectivity of 2e transfer from catalysts to O2 is still unsatisfactory, resulting in the insufficient H2O2 availability. Carbon based materials with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups have been used as excellent 2e ORR electrocatalysts, and atomic hydrogen (H*) can quickly transfer one electron to H2O2 in a wide pH range and avoiding the restrict of traditional Fenton reaction. Herein, nickel nanoparticles growth on oxidized carbon deposited on modified carbon felt (Ni/Co@CFAO) was prepared as a bifunctional catalytic electrode coupling 2e ORR to form H2O2 with H* reducing H2O2 to produce ROS for highly efficient degradation of antibiotics. Electrochemical oxidation and thermal treatment were used to modulate the structure of carbon substrates for increasing the electro-generation of H2O2, while H* was produced over Ni sites through H2O/H+ reduction constructing an in-situ EF system. The experimental results indicated that 2e ORR and H* induced EF processes could promote each other mutually. The optimized Ni/Co@CFAO with a Ni:C mass ratio of 1:9 exhibited a high 2e selectivity and H2O2 yield of 49 mg L-1. As a result, the designed Ni/Co@CFAO exhibited excellent electrocatalytic ability to degrade tetracycline (TC) under different aqueous environmental conditions, and achieved 98.5% TC removal efficiency within 60 min H2O2 and H* were generated simultaneously at the bifunctional cathode and react to form strong oxidizing free radicals •OH. At the same time, O2 gained an electron to form •O2-, which could react with •OH and H2O to form 1O2, which had relatively long life (10-6∼10-3 s), further promoting the efficient removal of antibiotics in water.

Abstract:Antibiotic residue in wastewater is one of the most worrying environmental pollution problems. In this study, innovative bimetallic nanocatalysts of FeTiO x were prepared. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between Ti and Fe, FeTiO x exhibited an excellent performance in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Within 60 min, the TC treatment efficiency can reach 96 %. Mechanism study confirmed that the non-free radical pathway ( 1 O 2 ) and free radical pathway (O 2 − , OH, SO 4 − ) co-participated during the TC treatment process. To further improve the separation function and efficiency, FeTiO x nanocatalyst was loaded on the ceramic membrane (CM) by a facile spraying method and a self-designed experimental device was constructed, which can be used to degrade TC with large volume. In the designed device, 2 L 40 mg/L TC wastewater can be degraded at one time with an efficiency of 85 % and a permeate flux of 1011.66 kg/m 2 ·h when the transmembrane pressure (TMP) was 20 kPa. Finally, real pharmaceutical wastewater was treated and found that the removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 − N) and total organic carbon (TOC) were 70.3 %, 62.85 % and 32.8 %, respectively. The study provides a new strategy for treating wastewater pollutants by combining CM technology with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs).
