Abstract:Color confinement and chiral symmetry specify some important territory for the study of hadronic physics. Any hadron can be defined as a color-singlet composite system of qurks and gluons, the fundamental fields of qcd, while the landscape of the hadronic spectrum is dominated by the fact that two quark flavors, u and d, are characterized by masses small compared to the fundamental scale of this theory. Measurements sensitive to the orbital angular momenta of the color constituents of the nucleon display the interplay of chiral dynamics and confinement in a unique manner. This pageant can be explored by an evaluation, within the context of the Georgi-Manohar chiral quark model, of the normalization of the orbital structure functions and the normalization of the Boer-Mulders functions for different quark flavors. The resolution structures in the chiral quark model represent an evaluation of Collins functions for a confined system defined by the quantum numbers of the nucleon in the constituent quark model. The orbital structure functions for antiquarks can also be specified within the basic framework of this approach while the normalization of the gluon orbital structure function requires some additional assumptions.

Abstract:The nucleon's axial charge, g(A), expresses features that are both fundamental to the strong interaction and crucial to its connection with weak-interaction physics. We show that dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) suppresses the axial charge of a dressed quark, g(A)(q), at infrared momenta. Since this effect disappears as chiral symmetry is restored, one may argue that g(A) vanishes with the restoration of chiral symmetry because no nucleon bound state survives the associated transition. The suppression of g(A)(q) is shown to be part of an explanation for a 25% reduction of g(A) from its nonrelativistic quark-model value. Critical, too, however, is the presence of dressed-quark angular momentum within the nucleon. The value of g(A)(q) depends on the kernels of the gap and Bethe-Salpeter equations. We find that incorporation of essentially nonperturbative effects associated with DCSB into these kernels inflates the value relative to that obtained at leading order in a widely used truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations. Such corrections also affect the nucleon's axial radius. In both cases, however, agreement with experiment will require similar improvements to the Faddeev kernel and associated interaction current.
Nuclear Currents in Chiral Effective Field Theory

Abstract:In this article, we review the status of the calculation of nuclear currents within chiral effective field theory. After formal discussion of the unitary transformation technique and its application to nuclear currents we will give all available expressions for vector, axial-vector currents. Vector and axial-vector currents will be discussed up to order $Q$ with leading-order contribution starting at order $Q^{-3}$. Pseudoscalar and scalar currents will be discussed up to order $Q^0$ with leading-order contribution starting at order $Q^{-4}$. This is a complete set of expressions in next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order (N$^3$LO) analysis for nuclear scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axial-vector current operators. Differences between vector and axial-vector currents calculated via transfer-matrix inversion and unitary transformation techniques are discussed. The importance of consistent regularization is an additional point which is emphasized: lack of consistent regularization of axial-vector current operators is shown to lead to a violation of the chiral symmetry in the chiral limit at order $Q$. For this reason, a hybrid approach at order $Q$, discussed in various publications, is non-applicable. To respect the chiral symmetry the same regularization procedure needs to be used in the construction of nuclear forces and current operators. Although full expressions of consistently regularized current operators are not yet available an isoscalar part of the electromagnetic charge operator up to order $Q$ has a very simple form and can be easily regularized in a consistent way. As an application, we review our recent high accuracy calculation of the deuteron charge form factor with a quantified error estimate.

Abstract:We revisit the chiral properties of nucleon interpolating currents, and show that of the two leading order currents j1 and j2 , only two linear combinations j1±j2 transform covariantly under the anomalous U(1)A symmetry. As a result, calculations of quantities which vanish by symmetry in the chiral limit may produce unphysical results if carried out with different linear combinations of the currents. This includes observables such as electric dipole moments, induced by the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) parameter θ , and the θ -dependence of the nucleon mass. For completeness, we also exhibit the leading order results for nucleon electric dipole moments ( dn,p ) induced by θ , and the nucleon magnetic moments ( μn,p ), when calculated using QCD sum rules for both the covariant choices of the nucleon interpolating current. Non-perturbative Chiral Corrections for Lattice QCD

Abstract:We explore the chiral aspects of extrapolation of observables calculated within lattice QCD, using the nucleon magnetic moments as an example. Our analysis shows that the biggest effects of chiral dynamics occur for quark masses corresponding to a pion mass below 600 MeV. In this limited range chiral perturbation theory is not rapidly convergent, but we can develop some understanding of the behaviour through chiral quark models. This model dependent analysis leads us to a simple Pad\'e approximant which builds in both the limits $m_\pi \to 0$ and $m_\pi \to \infty$ correctly and permits a consistent, model independent extrapolation to the physical pion mass which should be extremely reliable.

Abstract:We consider the quantum field theory of a model of an extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type with a QCD based nonlocal fermion current-current interaction which has global SU(Nc) symmetry. We obtain an exact bosonization of this model in four Euclidean dimensions using auxiliary bilocal fields and discuss the dynamical breakdown of chiral symmetry in the massless fermion limit. A local field bosonization is obtained by decomposing the bilocal fields in terms of complete orthonormal sets of functions with the expansion coefficients, which are local functions, identified as the local meson fields. Retaining the ground state pseudoscalar, vector and pseudovector local fields we obtain a local effective action for this sector of the theory. The derivative expansion of the fermionic determinant necessary to obtain this local action is self-regularizing because of the bilocal substructure present in the model which is manifest in the form factors that are associated with the local fields. In our local action the value of each coefficient depends critically on the underlying fermionic dynamics through these form factors and the vacuum functions. As a consequence of this the vector and pseudovector fields in the theory are best interpreted as simple fermion-antifermion bound states rather than as massive Yang-Mills fields or exotic composites of the pseudoscalars; interpretations that we find are not in general admitted when models such as the GCM are treated correctly. Identifying then the physical vector and pseudovector fields with the linearly transforming chiral partners introduced by the bosonization, we obtain an effective action for this sector of the meson spectrum which predicts values for the kinematic and dynamic quantities associated with these fields.
A New-Old Approach to Composite Scalars with Chiral Fermion Constituents

Abstract:We develop a dynamical, Lorentz invariant theory of composite scalars in configuration space consisting of chiral fermions, interacting by the perturbative exchange of a massive "gluon" of coupling $g_0$ and mass $M_0^2$ (the coloron model). The formalism is inspired by, but goes beyond, old ideas of Yukawa and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. It yields a non-pointlike internal wave-function of the bound state, $\phi(r)$, which satisfies a Schrödinger-Klein-Gordon (SKG) equation with eigenvalue $\mu^2$. For super-critical coupling, $g_0 >g_{0c}$, we have $\mu^2< 0$ leading to spontaneous symmetry breaking. The binding of chiral fermions is semiclassical, and not loop-level as in NJL. The mass scale is determined by the interaction as in NJL. We mainly focus on the short-distance, large $M_0^2$ limit, yielding an NJL pointlike interaction, but the bound state internal wave-function, $\phi(r)$, remains spatially extended and dilutes $\phi(0)$. This leads to power-law suppression of the induced Yukawa and quartic couplings and requires radically less fine-tuning of a hierarchy than does the NJL model. We include a discussion of loop corrections of the theory. A realistic top--condensation model appears possible.

Abstract:We discuss the relevance of the scalar modes appearing in chiral theories with spontaneous symmetry breaking such as the NJL model for nuclear matter studies. We show that it depends on the relative role of chiral symmetry breaking and confinement in the nucleon mass origin. It is only in the case of a mixed origin that nuclear matter can be stable and reach saturation. We describe models of nucleon structure where this balance is achieved. We show how chiral constarints and confinement modify the QCD sum rules for the mass evolution in nuclear matter.

Chiral Corrections to the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner Relation from QCD Sum Rules

Abstract:We calculate the next-to-leading order corrections to the $SU(2)\otimes SU(2)$ and $SU(3)\otimes SU(3)$ Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relations. We use a pseudoscalar correlator calculated from Perturbative QCD up to five loops and use the QCD Finite Energy Sum Rules with integration kernels tuned to suppress the importance of the hadronic resonances. This leads to a substantial reduction in the systematic uncertainties from the experimentally unknown resonance spectral function. We use the method of Fixed Order and Fixed Renormalization Scale Perturbation Theory to compute the integrals. We calculate these corrections to be $\delta_\pi = 0.060 \pm 0.014$ and $\delta _K =0.64 \pm 0.24$. As a result of these new values, we predict the value of the light quark condensate $\left\langle {0|\bar qq|0} \right\rangle = - \left( {266 \pm 5{\text{ MeV}}} \right)^3$ and the Chiral Perturbation Theory low energy constant $H_2^r = - \left( {4.9 \pm 1.8} \right) \times 10^{ - 3}$. Abstract:Confining configurations are introduced into the standard instanton vacuum model. This drastically improves theoretical properties of the vacuum: instanton size density $d(\rho)$ stabilizes at $\rho\sim 0.2 fm$, all chiral effects are formulated in a gauge-invariant way and quarks are confined. An interesting interplay of chiral and confining dynamics is observed; for the realistic values of parameters the Georgi-Manohar picture emerges with chiral radius $R_{ch}\sim \rho\sim 0.2 fm$ much less than confining radius $R_c\sim$ hadron radius $\sim 1 fm$. In the limit $R_{ch}\ll R_c$ the chiral mass $M_{ch}(p)$ is unaffected by confinement and can be taken in the local limit $M_{ch}(p=0)$. Different types of effective chiral Lagrangians (ECL) are obtained, containing all or a part of gluon, quark and Nambu--Goldstone--meson fields. The ECL are manifestly gauge--invariant and in the limit of no gluon fields coincide with those found previously. The problem of the double role of the pion -- as a Goldstone meson or as a $q\bar{q}$ system is briefly disscussed using confining ECL with quarks, mesons and gluons.

Abstract:The homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) of a (1/2)$^+$ bound system, that has both fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom, that we call a {\em mock nucleon}, is studied in Minkowski space, in order to analyse the chiral limit in covariant gauges. After adopting an interaction kernel built with a one-particle exchange, the $\chi$-BSE is numerically solved by means of the Nakanishi integral representation and light-front projection. Noteworthy, the chiral limit induces a scale-invariance of the model and consequently generates a wealth of striking features: i) it reduces the number of non trivial Nakanishi weight functions to only one; ii) the form of the surviving weight function has a factorized dependence on the two relevant variables, compact and non-compact one; iii) the coupling constant becomes an explicit function of the real exponent governing the power-law fall-off of the non trivial Nakanishi weight function. The thorough investigation at large transverse-momentum of light-front Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes, obtained with massive constituents, provides a confirmation of the expected universal power-law fall-off, with exponents predicted by our non-perturbative framework. Finally, one can shed light on the exponents that govern the approach to the upper extremum of the longitudinal-momentum fraction distribution function of the {\em mock nucleon}, when the coupling constant varies.

Chiral Quark Soliton Model and Nucleon Spin Structure Functions

Abstract:The chiral quark soliton model (CQSM) is one of the most successful models of baryons at quark level, which maximally incorporates the most important feature of low energy QCD, i.e. the chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breakdown. Basically, it is a relativistic mean-field theory with full account of infinitely many Dirac-sea quarks in a rotational-symmetry-breaking mean field of hedgehog shape. The numerical technique established so far enables us to make a nonperturbative evaluation of Casimir effects (i.e. effects of vacuum-polarized Dirac sea) on a variety of baryon observables. This incompatible feature of the model manifests most clearly in its predictions for parton distribution functions of the nucleon. In this talk, after briefly reviewing several basic features of the CQSM, we plan to demonstrate in various ways that this unique model of baryons provides us with an ideal tool for disentangling nonperturbative aspect of the internal partonic structure of the nucleon, especially the underlying spin structure function of the nucleon.

Abstract:We continue to study the properties of the light pseudoscalar nonet within the combined framework of Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio model and $1/N_c$ expansion, assuming that current quark masses count of order $\mathcal O(1/N_c)$. The masses, mixing angles and decay constants of the $\pi^0$, $\eta$ and $\eta'$ are calculated. The role of the $U(1)_A$ anomaly is emphasized. It is shown that the gluon anomaly suppresses the leading order effects that might otherwise be substantial for the $\eta\to 3\pi$ amplitude. A detailed comparison with the known results of $1/N_c$ chiral perturbation theory is made.

Superconnections in AdS/QCD and the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon $g-2$

Abstract:In this paper, we consider hard-wall AdS/QCD models extended by a string-theory inspired Chern-Simons action in terms of a superconnection involving a bi-fundamental scalar field which corresponds to the open-string tachyon of brane-antibrane configurations and which is naturally identified with the holographic dual of the quark condensate in chiral symmetry breaking. This realizes both the axial and chiral anomalies of QCD with a Witten-Veneziano mechanism for the $\eta'$ mass in addition to current quark masses, but somewhat differently than in the Katz-Schwartz AdS/QCD model used previously by us to evaluate pseudoscalar and axial vector transition form factors and their contribution to the HLBL piece of the muon $g-2$. Compared to the Katz-Schwartz model, we obtain a significantly more realistic description of axial-vector mesons with regard to $f_1$-$f_1'$ mixing and equivalent photon rates. Moreover, predictions of the $f_1\to e^+e^-$ branching ratios are found to be in line with a recent phenomenological study. However, pseudoscalar transition form factors compare less well with experiment; in particular the $\pi^0$ transition form factor turns out to be overestimated at moderate non-zero virtuality. For the combined HLBL contribution to the muon $g-2$ from the towers of axial vector mesons and excited pseudoscalars we obtain, however, a result very close to that of the Katz-Schwartz model.

Universality of the baryon axial vector current operator in large-$N_c$ chiral perturbation theory

Abstract:The baryon axial vector current is computed in a combined formalism in $1/N_c$ and chiral corrections. Flavor $SU(3)$ symmetry breaking is accounted for in two ways: Implicitly through the integrals occurring in the one-loop graphs and explicitly through perturbative symmetry breaking. Loop integrals can be expanded in a power series in the ratio of the decuplet-octet baryon mass difference to the pseudoscalar meson mass and the first three terms in the series are retained and evaluated. The universal baryon axial vector current so constructed is neither diagonal nor off-diagonal in the sense that it can connect baryon states of either different or equal spins to obtain appropriate axial vector couplings. Processes of interest are found in octet-baryon and decuplet-baryon semileptonic decays and strong decays of decuplet baryons. A fit to the available experimental information is performed to determine the free parameters in the formalism, which allows one to estimate, for instance, the leading axial vector coupling in the semileptonic decay $\Omega^- \to{\Xi^*}^0\ell^-\overline{\nu}_\ell$.

Constraints on the in-medium nuclear interaction from chiral symmetry and Lattice-QCD

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the combined effects on nuclear matter properties of the quark confinement mechanism in nucleon and of the chiral effective potential resulting from the spontaneous breaking of the chiral symmetry in nuclear matter. Based on the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio predictions, it is shown that the chiral potential acquires a specific scalar field cubic dependence, which contributes to the three-body interaction. We also discuss the constraints induced by Lattice-QCD on the model parameters governing the saturation properties. We introduce the term "QCD-connected parameters" for these quantities. We demonstrate that chiral symmetry and Lattice-QCD provide coherent constraints on the in-medium nuclear interaction, suggesting a fundamental origin of the saturation mechanism.
