Abstract:Two-loop renormalization group equations in gauge theories with multiple U(1) groups are presented. Instead of normalizing the Abelian gauge fields in canonical forms, we retain kinetic-mixing terms and treat the mixing coefficients as free parameters. The β- and γ-functions are then obtained in a straightforward manner.

Abstract:These lecture notes provide a pedagogical introduction to a specific continuum implementation of the Wilsonian renormalization group, the effective average action. Its general properties and, in particular, its functional renormalization group equation are explained in a simple scalar setting. The approach is then applied to Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG). The possibility of constructing a fundamental theory of quantum gravity in the framework of Asymptotic Safety is discussed and the supporting evidence is summarized.

Abstract:The gravitational asymptotic safety program envisions a high-energy completion of the gravitational interactions by an interacting renormalization group fixed point, the Reuter fixed point. The primary tool for investigating this scenario are functional renormalization group equations, foremost the Wetterich equation. This equation implements the idea of the Wilsonian renormalization group by integrating out quantum fluctuations shell-by-shell in momentum space and gives access to the theory's renormalization group flow beyond the realm of perturbation theory. This chapter gives a pedagogical introduction to the gravitational asymptotic safety program with a specific focus on clarifying conceptual points which led to confusion in the past. We provide a step-by-step introduction to the Wetterich equation and its most commonly used non-perturbative approximations. This exposition also introduces recent developments including the minimal essential scheme and $N$-type cutoffs. The use of the Wetterich equation in explicit computations is illustrated within the Einstein-Hilbert truncation which constitutes the simplest non-perturbative approximation of the gravitational renormalization group flow. We conclude with a brief summary and comments on recent developments originating from other quantum gravity programs.

Abstract:Asymptotic Safety is a promising framework towards the understanding, in a non-perturbative way, of Quantum Gravity. It treats the Newton's constant G_N and the cosmological constant \Lambda as running coupling of an effective action. At the phenomenological point of view the values of G_N and \Lambda depend on the energy density of the system under consideration. This fact has interesting astrophysical and cosmological consequences. The present work discusses the effects on the distance measurements from SNIa light curves and on the strong and weak gravitational lensing measurements.

The low energy region of the model can account for the cosmological behavior, where it is assumed that the nonlocal effects play a crucial role. Abstract:We incorporate running parameters and anomalous dimensions into the framework of the exact renormalization group. We modify the exact renormalization group differential equations for a real scalar field theory, using the anomalous dimensions of the squared mass and the scalar field. Following a previous paper in which an integral equation approach to the exact renormalization group was introduced, we reformulate the modified differential equations as integral equations that define the continuum limit directly in terms of a running squared mass and self-coupling constant. Universality of the continuum limit under an arbitrary change of the momentum cutoff function is discussed using the modified exact renormalization group equations.
Averaged Null Energy and the Renormalization Group

Abstract:We establish a connection between the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) and the monotonicity of the renormalization group, by studying the light-ray operator $\int du T_{uu}$ in quantum field theories that flow between two conformal fixed points. In four dimensions, we derive an exact sum rule relating this operator to the Euler coefficient in the trace anomaly, and show that the ANEC implies the a-theorem. The argument is based on matching anomalies in the stress tensor 3-point function, and relies on special properties of contact terms involving light-ray operators. We also illustrate the sum rule for the example of a free massive scalar field. Averaged null energy appears in a variety of other applications to quantum field theory, including causality constraints, Lorentzian inversion, and quantum information. The quantum information perspective provides a new derivation of the $a$-theorem from the monotonicity of relative entropy. The equation relating our sum rule to the dilaton scattering amplitude in the forward limit suggests an inversion formula for non-conformal theories.

Abstract:We derive a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model from a non-local gauge theory and show that it has confining properties at low energies. In particular, we present an extended approach to non-local QCD and a complete revision of the technique of Bender, Milton and Savage applied to non-local theories, providing a set of Dyson--Schwinger equations in differential form. In the local case, we obtain closed form solutions in the simplest case of the scalar field and extend it to the Yang--Mills field. In general, for non-local theories, we use a perturbative technique and a Fourier series and show how higher-order harmonics are heavily damped due to the presence of the non-local factor. The spectrum of the theory is analysed for the non-local Yang--Mills sector and found to be in agreement with the local results on the lattice in the limit of the non-locality mass parameter running to infinity. In the non-local case, we confine ourselves to a non-locality mass that is sufficiently large compared to the mass scale arising from the integration of the Dyson--Schwinger equations. Such a choice results in good agreement, in the proper limit, with the spectrum of the local theory. We derive the gap equation for the fermions in the theory that gives some indication of quark confinement in the non-local NJL case as well. Confinement seems to be a rather ubiquitous effect that removes some degrees of freedom in the original action, favouring the appearance of new observable states, as seen, e.g.,\ for quantum chromodynamics at lower energies.

Abstract:Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a crucial role in the development of cancer metastasis. The mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases extracellular signal-regulated kinase, c-jun-NH(2)-kinase, and p38 have been implicated in promoting EMT, but a role for the MAP kinase BMK1 has not been studied. Here, we report that BMK1 signaling suppresses EMT. BMK1 elevation augmented E-cadherin-mediated cell-cell adhesion, downregulated mesenchymal markers, and decreased cell motility. Conversely, BMK1 silencing attenuated E-cadherin-mediated cell-cell adhesion, upregulated mesenchymal markers, and stimulated cell motility. BMK1 depletion dramatically increased the accumulation of endogenous Snail in the nuclear compartment. Snail accumulation was mediated by Akt/GSK3β signaling, which was activated by a modulation in the expression of the mTOR inhibitor DEPTOR. In support of these observations, BMK1 depletion promoted metastasis in vivo. Together, our findings reveal a novel mechanism of EMT control via mTOR/Akt inhibition that suppresses cancer metastasis.

Abstract:We consider the group formed by finite renormalizations as an infinite-dimensional Lie group. It is demonstrated that for the finite renormalization of the gauge coupling constant its generators $\hat L_n$ with $n\ge 1$ satisfy the commutation relations of the Witt algebra and, therefore, form its subalgebra. The commutation relations are also written for the more general case when finite renormalizations are made for both the coupling constant and matter fields. We also construct the generator of the Abelian subgroup corresponding to the changes of the renormalization scale. The explicit expressions for the renormalization group generators are written in the case when they act on the $\beta$-function and the anomalous dimension. It is explained how the finite changes of these functions under the finite renormalizations can be obtained with the help of the exponential map.

Abstract:We generalize the spinorial characterization of isometric immersions of surfaces in R^3 given by T. Friedrich (On the spinor representation of surfaces in Euclidean 3-space, J. Geom. Phys. 28 (1998)) to surfaces in S^3 and H^3. The main argument is the interpretation of the energy-momentum tensor associated with a special spinor field as a second fundamental form. It turns out that such a characterization of isometric immersions in terms of a special section of the spinor bundle also holds in the case of hypersurfaces in the Euclidean 4-space.

Abstract:We establish a link between the concepts of infrared renormalons, infrared fixed point, and dynamical nonperturbative mass generation of gluons in pure Yang-Mills theories. By utilizing recent results in the resurgent analysis of renormalons through non-linear ordinary differential equations, we develop a new description for the gluon propagator, thereby realizing the Schwinger mechanism. Specifically, this approach leads to a nonperturbative, dynamic mass generation for Yang-Mills gauge bosons in the deep infrared region, a phenomenon closely associated with color confinement. Furthermore, we present arguments about the limit of applicability of the Borel-Ecalle resummation of the renormalons by comparing it with the Kallen-Lehman representation of the gluon propagator.

Asymptotic Safety within on-shell perturbation theory

Abstract:We investigate the renormalisation of Einstein gravity using a novel subtraction scheme in dimensional regularisation. The one-loop beta function for Newton's constant receives contributions from poles in even dimensions and can be mapped to the beta function obtained using a proper-time cutoff. Field redefinitions are used to remove off-shell contributions to the renormalisation group equations. To check the consistency of our approximations we use a general parametrisation of the metric fluctuation. Within truncations of the derivative expansion and the expansion in Newton's constant, we show that the parametrisation dependence can be removed order by order. Going to all orders in the scalar curvature an all-order beta function for Newton's constant is obtained that is independent of the parameterisation. The beta function vanishes at the Reuter fixed point and the critical exponent is in good agreement with non-perturbative calculations. Finally, we compare the critical exponent to the counterpart computed via Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT).

Abstract:We propose a novel method for renormalization group improvement of thermally resummed effective potential. In our method, β -functions are temperature dependent as a consequence of the divergence structure in resummed perturbation theory. In contrast to the ordinary MS ̄ scheme, the renormalization group invariance of the resummed finite-temperature effective potential holds order by order, which significantly mitigates a notorious renormalization scale dependence of phase transition quantities such as a critical temperature even at the one-loop order. Abstract:We propose an exact renormalization group equation for Lattice Gauge Theories, that has no dependence on the lattice spacing. We instead relate the lattice spacing properties directly to the continuum convergence of the support of each local plaquette. Equivalently, this is formulated as a convergence prescription for a characteristic polynomial in the gauge coupling that allows the exact meromorphic continuation of a nonperturbative system arbitrarily close to the continuum limit.

Abstract:The asymptotic behaviour of cubic field theories is investigated in the Regge limit using the techniques of environmentally friendly renormalization, environmentally friendly in the present context meaning asymmetric in its momentum dependence. In particular we consider the crossover between large and small energies at fixed momentum transfer for a model scalar theory of the type phi^2 psi. The asymptotic forms of the crossover scaling functions are exhibited for all two particle scattering processes in this channel to one loop in a renormalization group improved perturbation theory.

Abstract:We define a geometric quantity for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, which we call the volume-renormalized mass. It is essentially a linear combination of the ADM mass surface integral and a renormalization of the volume. We show that the volume-renormalized mass is well-defined and diffeomorphism invariant under weaker fall-off conditions than required to ensure that the renormalized volume and the ADM mass surface integral are well-defined separately. We prove several positivity results for the volume-renormalized mass. We also use it to define a renormalized Einstein--Hilbert action and a renormalized expander entropy which is nondecreasing under the Ricci flow. Further, we show that local maximizers of the entropy are local minimizers of the volume-renormalized mass.
