Infrared problem in quantum electrodynamics

Abstract:The infrared problem in quantum electrodynamics consists of intriguing difficulties in scattering theory appearing at large scales and low energies. Although they can be circumvented using ad hoc recipes, such as the inclusive collision cross sections, there have been continuing efforts to reach a conceptually clear and mathematically rigorous understanding. In this article we focus on such developments of the last two decades. We start from the Buchholz-Roberts approach in the setting of algebraic QFT, which is based on the idea that there should be no infrared problems inside the future lightcone. Then we move on to the setting of non-relativistic QED, where insights from Haag-Ruelle scattering theory and the Faddeev-Kulish formalism suggest concrete formulas for the physical electron. Finally, in a setting of perturbative QFT, we outline a recent proposal for an infrared finite scattering matrix, which is also in the spirit of the Faddeev-Kulish approach.

Infrared Regularization of Very Special Relativity Models

Abstract:We extend the $\tmop{Sim}(2)$ invariant infrared regularization of Very Special Relativity models, that we have proposed recently, to include $\gamma_5$ Dirac matrix. Then, we solve the Very Special Relativity Schwinger model, find the chiral anomaly, and clarify its meaning in the new context. In addition, we show that the triangle anomaly in four space-time dimensions agrees with the same object in standard quantum electrodynamics. Finally, we apply the infrared regularization to compute the large N limit of the Very Special Relativity Gross--Neveu model.

The infrared problem in QED: A lesson from a model with Coulomb interaction and realistic photon emission

Abstract:The scattering of photons and heavy classical Coulomb interacting particles, with realistic particle-photon interaction (without particle recoil) is studied adopting the Koopman formulation for the particles. The model is translation invariant and allows for a complete control of the Dollard strategy devised by Kulish-Faddeev and Rohrlich (KFR) for QED: in the adiabatic formulation, the Møller operators exist as strong limits and interpolate between the dynamics and a non-free asymptotic dynamics, which is a unitary group; the $S$-matrix is non-trivial and exhibits the factorization of all the infrared divergences. The implications of the KFR strategy on the open questions of the LSZ asymptotic limits in QED are derived in the field theory version of the model, with the charged particles described by second quantized fields: i) asymptotic limits of the charged fields, $\Psi_{out/in}(x)$, are obtained as strong limits of modified LSZ formulas, with corrections given by a Coulomb phase operator and an exponential of the photon field; ii) free asymptotic electromagnetic fields, $B_{out/in}(x)$, are given by the massless LSZ formula, as in Buchholz approach; iii) the asymptotic field algebras are a semidirect product of the canonical algebras generated by $B_{out/in}$, $\Psi_{out/in}$; iv) on the asymptotic spaces, the Hamiltonian is the sum of the free (commuting) Hamiltonians of $B_{out/in}$, $\Psi_{out/in}$ and the same holds for the generators of the space translations.

Abstract:The infrared behaviour of the n-point functions of a Yang-Mills theory with a charged scalar field in the fundamental representation of SU(N) is studied in the formalism of Dyson-Schwinger equations. Assuming a stable skeleton expansion solutions in form of power laws for the Green functions are obtained. For a massless scalar field the uniform limit is sufficient to describe the infrared scaling behaviour of vertices. Not taking into account a possible Higgs-phase it turns out that kinematic singularities play an important role for the scaling solutions of massive scalars. On a qualitative level scalar Yang-Mills theory yields similar scaling solutions as recently obtained for QCD.

Abstract:We elucidate constraints imposed by confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking on the infrared behaviour of the dressed-quark and -gluon propagators, and dressed-quark-gluon vertex. In covariant gauges the dressing of the gluon propagator is completely specified by P(k2):=1/[1+Π(k2)], where Π(k2) is the vacuum polarisation. In the absence of particle-like singularities in the dressed-quark-gluon vertex, extant proposals for the dressed-gluon propagator that manifest P(k2=0)=0 and max(P(k2))∼10 neither confine quarks nor break chiral symmetry dynamically. This class includes all existing estimates of P(k2) via numerical simulations.

Abstract:Precise theoretical predictions are a key ingredient for an accurate determination of the structure of the Langrangian of particle physics, including its free parameters, which summarizes our understanding of the fundamental interactions among particles. Furthermore, due to the absence of clear new-physics signals, precise theoretical calculations are required in order to pin down possible subtle deviations from the Standard Model predictions. The error associated with such calculations must be scrutinized, as non-perturbative power corrections, dubbed infrared renormalons, can limit the ultimate precision of truncated perturbative expansions in quantum chromodynamics. In this review we focus on linear power corrections that can arise in certain kinematic distributions relevant for collider phenomenology where an operator product expansion is missing, e.g. those obtained from the top-quark decay products, shape observables and the transverse momentum of massive gauge bosons. Only the last one is found to be free from such corrections, while the mass of the system comprising the top decay products has a larger power correction if the perturbative expansion is expressed in terms of a short-distance mass instead of the pole mass. A proper modelization of non-perturbative corrections is crucial in the context of shape observables to obtain reliable strong coupling constant extractions.

Abstract:We study the Schwinger model at finite temperature and show that a temperature dependent chiral anomaly may arise from the long distance behavior of the electric field. At high temperature this anomaly depends linearly on the temperature $T$ and is present not only in the two point function, but also in all even point amplitudes.

Abstract:We study a recently proposed quantum action depending on temperature. We construct a renormalisation group equation describing the flow of action parameters with temperature. At zero temperature the quantum action is obtained analytically and is found free of higher time derivatives. It makes the quantum action an ideal tool to investigate quantum chaos and quantum instantons.

Infrared finite scattering theory: Scattering states and representations of the BMS group

Abstract:Any non-trivial scattering with any massless fields in four spacetime dimensions will generically produce an "out" state with memory which gives rise to infrared divergences in the standard $S$-matrix. To obtain an infrared-finite scattering theory, one must suitably include states with memory. However, except in the case of QED with massive charged particles, asymptotic states with memory that have finite energy and angular momentum have not been constructed for more general theories (e.g. massless QED, Yang-Mills and quantum gravity). To this end, we construct direct-integral representations over the "Lorentz orbit" of a given memory and classify all "orbit space representations" that have well-defined energy and angular momentum. We thereby provide an explicit construction of a large supply of physical states with memory as well as the explicit action of the BMS charges all states. The construction of such states is a key step toward the formulation of an infrared-finite scattering theory. While we primarily focus on the quantum gravitational case, we outline how the methods presented in this paper can be applied to obtain representations of the Poincaré group with memory for more general quantum field theories.

Quantum fields in disequilibrium: neutral scalar bosons with long-range, inhomogeneous perturbations

Abstract:Using Schwinger's quantum action principle, dispersion relations are obtained for neutral scalar mesons interacting with bi-local sources. These relations are used as the basis of a method for representing the effect of interactions in the Gaussian approximation to field theory, and it is argued that a marked inhomogeneity, in space-time dependence of the sources, forces a discrete spectrum on the field. The development of such a system is characterized by features commonly associated with chaos and self-organization (localization by domain or cell formation). The Green functions play the role of an iterative map in phase space. Stable systems reside at the fixed points of the map. The present work can be applied to self-interacting theories by choosing suitable properties for the sources. Rapid transport leads to a second order phase transition and anomalous dispersion. Finally, it is shown that there is a compact representation of the non-equilibrium dynamics in terms of generalized chemical potentials, or equivalently as a pseudo-gauge theory, with an imaginary charge. This analogy shows, more clearly, how dissipation and entropy production are related to the source picture and transform a flip-flop like behaviour between two reservoirs into the Landau problem in a constant `magnetic field'. A summary of conventions and formalism is provided as a basis for future work.

Renormalisation of IR divergences and holography in de Sitter

Abstract:We formulate a renormalisation procedure for IR divergences of tree-level in-in late-time de Sitter correlators. These divergences are due to the infinite volume of spacetime and are analogous to the divergences that appear in AdS dealt with by holographic renormalisation. Regulating the theory using dimensional regularisation, we show that one can remove all infinities by adding local counterterms at the future boundary of dS in the Schwinger-Keldysh path integral. The counterterms amount to renormalising the late-time bulk field. We frame the discussion in terms of bulk scalar fields in dS, using tree-level correlators of massless and conformal scalars for illustration. The relation to AdS via analytic continuation is discussed, and we show that different versions of the analytic continuation appearing in the literature are equivalent to each other. In AdS, one needs to add counterterms that are related to conformal anomalies, and also to renormalise the source part of the bulk field. The analytic continuation to dS projects out the traditional AdS counterterms, and links the renormalisation of the sources to the renormalisation of the late-time bulk field. We use these results to establish holographic formulae that relate tree-level dS in-in correlators to CFT correlators at up to four points, and we provide two proofs: one using the connection between the dS wavefunction and the partition function of the dual CFT, and a second by direct evaluation of the in-in correlators using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism. The renormalisation of the bulk IR divergences is mapped by these formulae to UV renormalisation of the dual CFT via local counterterms, providing structural support for a possible duality. We also recast the regulated holographic formulae in terms of the AdS amplitudes of shadow fields, but show that this relation breaks down when renormalisation is required.

Infrared fixed point in the massless twelve-flavor SU(3) gauge-fermion system

Abstract:We present strong numerical evidence for the existence of an infrared fixed point in the renormalization group flow of the SU(3) gauge-fermion system with twelve massless fermions in the fundamental representation. Our numerical simulations using nHYP-smeared staggered fermions with Pauli-Villars improvement do not exhibit any first-order bulk phase transition in the investigated parameter region. We utilize an infinite volume renormalization scheme based on the gradient flow transformation to determine the renormalization group β function. The gradient flow β function exhibits a zero at gGF⋆2=6.60(62) , implying that the system is infrared conformal. We calculate the leading irrelevant critical exponent γg⋆=0.199(32) . Infrared structures of scattering on self-dual radiative backgrounds

Abstract:The scattering of gluons and gravitons in trivial backgrounds is endowed with many surprising infrared features which have interesting conformal interpretations on the two-dimensional celestial sphere. However, the fate of these structures in more general asymptotically flat backgrounds is far from clear. In this paper, we consider holomorphic infrared structures in the presence of non-perturbative, self-dual background gauge and gravitational fields which are determined by freely specified radiative data. We make use of explicit formulae for tree-level gluon and graviton scattering in these self-dual radiative backgrounds, as well as chiral twistor sigma model descriptions of the classical dynamics. Remarkably, we find that the leading holomorphic part of tree-level collinear splitting functions — or celestial OPEs — and infinite-dimensional chiral soft algebras are undeformed by the background. We also compute all-order holomorphic celestial OPEs in the MHV sectors of gauge theory and gravity.

Abstract:A bstract The construction of effective actions for Nambu-Goldstone bosons, and the nonlinear sigma model, usually requires a target coset space G / H . Recent progresses uncovered a new formulation using only IR data without reference to the broken group G in the UV, by imposing the Adler’s zero condition, which can be seen to originate from the superselection rule in the space of degenerate vacua. The IR construction imposes a nonlinear shift symmetry on the Lagrangian to enforce the correct single soft limit amid constraints of the unbroken group H . We present a systematic study on the consequence of the Adler’s zero condition in correlation functions of nonlinear sigma models, by deriving the conserved current and the Ward identity associated with the nonlinear shift symmetry, and demonstrate how the old-fashioned current algebra emerges. The Ward identity leads to a new representation of on-shell amplitudes, which amounts to bootstrapping the higher point amplitudes from lower point amplitudes and adding new vertices to satisfy the Adler’s condition. The IR perspective allows one to extract Feynman rules for the mysterious extended theory of biadjoint cubic scalars residing in the subleading single soft limit, which was first discovered using the Cachazo-He-Yuan representation of scattering amplitudes. In addition, we present the subleading triple soft theorem in the nonlinear sigma model and show that it is also controlled by on-shell amplitudes of the same extended theory as in the subleading single soft limit.

Abstract:Any non-trivial scattering with massless fields in four spacetime dimensions will generically produce an out-state with memory. Scattering with any massless fields violates the standard assumption of asymptotic completeness -- that all "in" and "out" states lie in the standard (zero memory) Fock space -- and therefore leads to infrared (IR) divergences in the standard $S$-matrix amplitudes. In this paper we define an infrared finite scattering theory which assumes only (1) the existence of in/out algebras and (2) that Heisenberg evolution is an automorphism of these algebras. The resulting "superscattering" map $\$$ allows for transitions between different in/out memory states and agrees with the standard $S$-matrix when it is defined. We construct $\$$-amplitudes by defining (3) a "generalized asymptotic completeness" which accommodates states with memory in the space of asymptotic states and (4) a complete basis of improper states which generalize the usual $n$-particle momentum basis to account for states with memory. Using only general properties of $\$$, we prove an analog of the Weinberg soft theorems in quantum gravity and QED which imply that all $\$$-amplitudes are well-defined in the infrared. We comment on how one must generalize this framework to consider $\$$-amplitudes for theories with collinear divergences (e.g., massless QED and Yang-Mills theories).

Ground States for Infrared Renormalized Translation-Invariant Non-Relativistic QED

Abstract:We consider a translation-invariant Pauli-Fierz model describing a non-relativistic charged quantum mechanical particle interacting with the quantized electromagnetic field. The charged particle may be spinless or have spin one half. We decompose the Hamiltonian with respect to the total momentum into a direct integral of so called fiber Hamiltonians. We perform an infrared renormalization, in the sense of norm resolvent convergence, for each fiber Hamiltonian, which has the physical interpretation of removing an infinite photon cloud. We show that the renormalized fiber Hamiltonians have a ground state for almost all values for the total momentum with modulus less than one.

Abstract:We discuss the behavior of cosmological curves and their first order infrared approximants near critical ends of the scalar manifold $\Sigma$ and near interior critical points of the scalar potential for tame hyperbolizable two-field cosmological models by determining the universal forms of the asymptotic gradient flow of the classical effective potential with respect to the uniformizing metric near all these points and ends. We compare the asymptotic behavior of gradient flow curves with numerical results for cosmological curves.

A perturbation theory for the Coulomb phase infrared-divergence

Abstract:We construct a perturbation theory which we conjecture to be free of the Coulomb-phase infrared divergence. This perturbation theory is developed for one of the simplest yet prototypical scattering amplitudes which would otherwise exhibit this divergence: the semiclassical scattering of a spinless boson on a background Coulomb field. The perturbation theory is based upon replacing plane waves with Coulomb wavefunctions, and the free-field propagator with the Coulomb propagator, in order to appropriately match the asymptotics of the exact in/out states. We compute the leading-order (LO) and next-to-leading-order (NLO) infrared-finite scattering amplitudes in this framework, which include all-order-in-the-coupling effects, and demonstrate that these amplitudes are in agreement with the known exact amplitude at these orders. We comment on the Runge-Lenz symmetry of the LO amplitude which occurs as a principal series representation of the Euclidean conformal group on the 2-sphere.
