Abstract:The active-sterile neutrino conversion is studied for neutrino propagating in the axial potential generated by magnetised electron plasma in the supernova medium. We consider the effect of random magnetic field $B_{rms}$ on the average neutrino conversion probability. We obtained the constraint on $\Delta m^2$ and $\sin^2 2\theta$ for different strength of the random magnetic fields, by considering the positive definiteness of the average neutrino conversion probability inside the supernova core. Our calculation shows that, $B_{rms}\le 0.63\times 10^{14}$ Gauss is preferable so that small values of $\Delta m^2$ can not be excluded.

Abstract:Sterile neutrinos can be produced in the early universe via interactions with their active counterparts. For small active-sterile mixing angles, thermal equilibrium with the standard model plasma is not reached and sterile neutrinos are only produced via flavor oscillations. We study in detail this regime, taking into account matter potentials and decoherence effects caused by elastic scatterings with the plasma. We find that resonant oscillations occurring at temperatures T≲10 GeV lead to a significant enhancement of the sterile neutrino production rate. Taking this into account, we improve constraints on the active-sterile mixing from Big Bang nucleosynthesis and the cosmic microwave background, excluding mixing angles down to θs∼10−10−10−16 for sterile neutrino masses in the 10 MeV to 10 GeV range. We observe that if sterile neutrinos predominantly decay into metastable hidden sector particles, this process provides a novel dark matter production mechanism, consistent with the sterile neutrino origin of light neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism.

Abstract:We consider the cosmological effects of sterile neutrinos with the masses of 150–450 MeV . The decay of sterile neutrinos changes the thermal history of the Universe and affects the energy density of radiation at recombination and the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) results. We derive severe constraints on the parameters of sterile neutrinos from the primordial abundances of helium-4 and deuterium. We also find that in a particular model the constraints can be considerably relaxed by assuming a large lepton asymmetry in the active neutrinos. In this case, the consistent parameters result in Neff 3.2–3.4 and can alleviate the Hubble tension.

Abstract:The production of heavy-mass elements due to the rapid neutron-capture mechanism (r-process) is associated with astrophysical scenarios, such as supernovae and neutron-star mergers. In the r-process the capture of neutrons is followed by $\beta$-decays until nuclear stability is reached. A key element in the chain of nuclear weak-decays leading to the production of isotopes may be the change of the parameters controlling the neutrino sector, due to the mixing of active and sterile species. In this work we have addressed this question and calculated $\beta$-decay rates for the nuclei involved in the r-process chains as a function of the neutrino mixing parameters. These rates were then used in the calculation of the abundance of the heavy elements produced in core-collapse supernova and in neutron-star mergers, starting from different initial mass-fraction distributions. The analysis shows that the core-collapse supernova environment contributes with approximately $30\%$ of the total heavy nuclei abundance while the neutron-star merger contributes with about $70\%$ of it. Using available experimental data we have performed a statistical analysis to set limits on the active-sterile neutrino mixing angle and found a best-fit value $\sin^2 2\theta_{14}=0.22$, a value comparable with those found in other studies reported in the literature.

Abstract:Earlier de Sabbata and Gasperini have shown that neutrinos oscillation which gives them a mass can be induced by torsion. More recently Enqvist et al have shown that it is possible to use massive neutrinos BBN magnetic fields to seed galactic magnetic fields. Thus based on these previous investigations we present several examples of how obtaining cosmological magnetic seed fields as galactic magnetic fields from massive neutrino densities and also from the torsion obtained by Nitsch as $T\approx{10^{-24}s^{-1}}$ at the present day which yields magnetic seed field of the order of $B_{seed}\approx{10^{-12}G}$. In the case we use torsion derived from massive neutrinos given by $T_{\nu}\approx{10^{-26}s^{-1}}$ one obtains in BBN time $t\approx{1s}$ with the primordial nucleosynthesis magnetic field given by $B_{BBN}\approx{10^{11}G}$ a relic magnetic field $B_{c}\approx{10^{39}G}$ which shows that the result obtained by Enqvist et al for the cosmological fields at the early universe. Galactic dynamo seed could be obtained from neutrinos at recombination. It is also shown that in the approximation of weak fields torsion can slow down the decay of magnetic fields which confirms previous results. At Planck era where the time is $t\sim{10^{-43}s}$ and $B_{Pl}\sim{10^{58}G}$ the use of formula with the strongest torsion $10^{-19}G$this yields $B_{seed}\sim{10^{-4}G}$ is a too strong field to warrant a galactic dynamo seed.

Abstract:The magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is modified to incorporate the parity violation in the Standard Model leading to a new instability of magnetic fields in the electroweak plasma in the presence of nonzero neutrino asymmetries. The main ingredient for such a modified MHD is the antisymmetric part of the photon polarization tensor in plasma, where the parity violating neutrino interaction with charged leptons is present. We calculate this contribution to the polarization tensor connected with the Chern-Simons term in effective Lagrangian of the electromagnetic field. The general expression for such a contribution which depends on the temperature and the chemical potential of plasma as well as on the photon's momentum is derived. The instability of a magnetic field driven by the electron neutrino asymmetry for the $\nu$-burst during the first second of a supernova explosion can amplify a seed magnetic field of a protostar, and, perhaps, can explain the generation of strongest magnetic fields in magnetars. The growth of a cosmological magnetic field driven by the neutrino asymmetry density $\Delta n_{\nu}=n_{\nu} - n_{\bar{\nu}}\neq 0$ is provided by a lower bound on $|\xi_{\nu_e}|=|\mu_{\nu_e}|/T$ which is consistent with the well-known Big Bang nucleosynthesis (upper) bound on neutrino asymmetries in a hot universe plasma.

Abstract:The neutrino magnetic moment operator clasps a tiny but non-zero value within the standard model (SM) of particle physics and rather enhanced values in various new physics models. This generation of the magnetic moment ($\mu_\nu$) is through quantum loop corrections which can exhibit spin-flavor oscillations in the presence of an external magnetic field. Also, several studies predict the existence of a primordial magnetic field (PMF) in the early universe, extending back to the era of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and before. The recent NANOGrav measurement can be considered as a strong indication of the presence of these PMFs. In this work, we consider the effect of the PMF on the flux of relic neutrinos. For Dirac neutrinos, we show that half of the active relic neutrinos can become sterile due to spin-flavor oscillations well before becoming non-relativistic owing to the expansion of the Universe and also before the timeline of the formation of galaxies and hence intergalactic fields, subject to the constraints on the combined value of $\mu_\nu$ and the cosmic magnetic field at the time of neutrino decoupling. For the upper limit of PMF allowed by the BBN, this can be true even if the experimental bounds on $\mu_{\nu}$ approaches a few times its SM value.

Abstract:We have investigated the evolution of the neutrino asymmetry in active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early universe. We find that there are large regions of parameter space where the asymmetry is extremely sensitive to variations in the initial asymmetry as well as the external parameters (the mass difference and the mixing angle). In these regions the system undergoes chaotic transitions; however, the system is never truly chaotic in the sense that all information about initial conditions is lost. In some cases though, enough information is lost that the final sign of the neutrino asymmetry is stochastic. We discuss the implications of our findings for Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB).

Abstract:We extend a treatment of the causal structure of space-time to active-sterile neutrino transformation-based schemes for lepton number generation in the early universe. We find that these causality considerations necessarily lead to the creation of spatial domains of lepton number with opposite signs. Lepton number gradients at the domain boundaries can open a new channel for MSW resonant production of sterile neutrinos. The enhanced sterile neutrino production via this new channel allows considerable tightening of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis constraints on active-sterile neutrino mixing, including the proposed $\nu_\mu \to \nu_s$ solution for the Super Kamiokande atmospheric $\nu_\mu$ deficit, and the four-neutrino schemes proposed to simultaneously fit current neutrino experimental results.

Abstract:We present a review of cosmological nucleosynthesis (CN) with neutrino oscillations, discussing the different effects of oscillations on CN, namely: increase of the effective degrees of freedom during CN, spectrum distortion of the oscillating neutrinos, neutrino number density depletion, and growth of neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry due to active-sterile oscillations. We discuss the importance of these effects for the primordial yield of helium-4. Primordially produced He-4 value is obtained in a selfconsistent study of the nucleons and the oscillating neutrinos. The effects of spectrum distortion, depletion and neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry growth on helium-4 production are explicitly calculated. An update of the cosmological constraints on active-sterile neutrino oscillations parameters is presented, giving the values: delta m^2 sin^8 (2 theta) < 1.5 x 10^{-9} eV^2 for delta m^2 > 0, and |delta m^2| < 8.2 x 10^{-10} eV^2 at large mixing angles for delta m^2 < 0. According to these constraints, besides the active-sterile LMA solution, also the active-sterile LOW solution to the solar neutrino problem is almost totally excluded.

Abstract:We perform a study of the flavour evolution in the early universe of a multi-flavour active-sterile neutrino system with parameters inspired by the short-baseline neutrino anomalies. In a neutrino-symmetric bath a "thermal" population of the sterile state would quickly grow, but in the presence of primordial neutrino asymmetries a self-suppression as well as a resonant sterile neutrino production can take place, depending on temperature and chosen parameters. In order to characterize these effects, we go beyond the usual average momentum and single mixing approximations and consider a multi-momentum and multi-flavour treatment of the kinetic equations. We find that the enhancement obtained in this case with respect to the average momentum approximation is significant, up to \sim 20 % of a degree of freedom. Such detailed and computationally demanding treatment further raises the asymmetry values required to significantly suppress the sterile neutrino production, up to large and preferentially net asymmetries |L_{\nu}| > O(10^{-2}). For such asymmetries, however, the active-sterile flavour conversions happen so late that significant distortions are produced in the electron (anti)neutrino spectra. The larger |L_{\nu}|, the more the impact of these distortions takes over as dominant cosmological effect, notably increasing the 4 He abundance in primordial nucleosynthesis (BBN). The standard expression of the primordial yields in terms of the effective number of neutrinos and asymmetries is also greatly altered. We numerically estimate the magnitude of such effects for a few representative cases and comment on possible implications for forthcoming cosmological measurements.

Abstract:A sizable magnetic moment for neutrinos would be evidence of exotic physics. In the early Universe, left-handed neutrinos with a magnetic moment would interact with electromagnetic fields in the primordial plasma, flipping their helicity and producing a population of right-handed (RH) neutrinos. In this work, we present a new calculation of the production rate of RH neutrinos in a multi-component primordial plasma and quantify their contribution to the total energy density of relativistic species at early times, stressing the implications of the dependence on the initial time for production. We find that current cosmological data exclude values of the magnetic moment $\mu \gtrsim 1.6\times 10^{-11}~\mu_B$, while future cosmological experiments will be able to probe non-thermal production of RH neutrinos, becoming competitive with stellar limits.

Probing the Sterile Neutrino Dipole Portal with SN1987A and Low-Energy Supernovae

Abstract:BSM electromagnetic properties of neutrinos may lead to copious production of sterile neutrinos in the hot and dense core of a core-collapse supernova. In this work, we focus on the active-sterile transition magnetic moment portal for heavy sterile neutrinos. Firstly, we revisit the SN1987A cooling bounds for dipole portal using the integrated luminosity method, which yields more reliable results (especially in the trapping regime) compared to the previously explored via emissivity loss, aka the Raffelt criterion. Secondly, we obtain strong bounds on the dipole coupling strength reaching as low as $10^{-11} \text{ GeV}^{-1}$ from energy deposition, i.e., constrained from the observation of explosion energies of underluminous Type IIP supernovae. In addition, we find that sterile neutrino production from Primakoff upscattering off of proton dominates over scattering off of electron for low sterile neutrino masses.

Abstract:We investigate the effects of strong magnetic fields on the equation of state of dense stellar neutrino-free and neutrino-trapped matter. Relativistic nuclear models both with constant couplings (NLW) and with density dependent parameters (DDRH) and including hyperons are considered . It is shown that at low densities neutrinos are suppressed in the presence of the magnetic field. The magnetic field reduces the strangeness fraction of neutrino-free matter and increases the strangeness fraction of neutrino-trapped matter. The mass-radius relation of stars described by these equations of state are determined. The magnetic field makes the overall equation of state stiffer and the stronger the field the larger the mass of maximum mass star and the smaller the baryon density at the center of the star. As a consequence in the presence of strong magnetic fields the possibility that a protoneutron star evolves to a blackhole is smaller.

Constraints on primordial lepton asymmetries with full neutrino transport

Abstract:Primordial neutrino-antineutrino asymmetries can be constrained through big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) relic abundances and cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, both observables being sensitive to neutrino properties. The latter constraint, which is due to gravitational effects from all neutrino flavors, is very minute since it is at least quadratic in the asymmetries. On the contrary, the constraints from primordial abundances presently dominate, although these abundances are almost only sensitive to the electron flavor asymmetry. It is generally assumed that neutrino asymmetries are sufficiently averaged by flavor oscillations prior to BBN, which allows to constrain a common primordial neutrino asymmetry at the epoch of BBN. This simplified approach suffers two caveats that we deal with in this article, combining a neutrino evolution code and BBN calculation throughout the MeV era. First, flavor "equilibration" is not true in general, therefore an accurate dynamical evolution of asymmetries is needed to connect experimental observables to the primordial asymmetries. Second, the approximate averaging of asymmetries through flavor oscillations is associated to a reheating of the primordial plasma. It is therefore crucial to correctly describe the interplay between flavor equilibration and neutrino decoupling, as an energy redistribution prior to decoupling does not significantly alter the final effective number of neutrino species' value. Overall, we find that the space of allowed initial asymmetries is generically unbound when using currently available primordial abundances and CMB measurements. We forecast constraints using future CMB experiment capabilities, which should reverse this experimental misfortune.

Impact of eV-mass sterile neutrinos on neutrino-driven supernova outflows

Abstract:Motivated by recent hints for sterile neutrinos from the reactor anomaly, we study active-sterile conversions in a three-flavor scenario (2 active + 1 sterile families) for three different representative times during the neutrino-cooling evolution of the proto-neutron star born in an electron-capture supernova. In our "early model" (0.5 s post bounce), the nu_e-nu_s MSW effect driven by Delta m^2=2.35 eV^2 is dominated by ordinary matter and leads to a complete nu_e-nu_s swap with little or no trace of collective flavor oscillations. In our "intermediate" (2.9 s p.b.) and "late models" (6.5 s p.b.), neutrinos themselves significantly modify the nu_e-nu_s matter effect, and, in particular in the late model, nu-nu refraction strongly reduces the matter effect, largely suppressing the overall nu_e-nu_s MSW conversion. This phenomenon has not been reported in previous studies of active-sterile supernova neutrino oscillations. We always include the feedback effect on the electron fraction Y_e due to neutrino oscillations. In all examples, Y_e is reduced and therefore the presence of sterile neutrinos can affect the conditions for heavy-element formation in the supernova ejecta, even if probably not enabling the r-process in the investigated outflows of an electron-capture supernova. The impact of neutrino-neutrino refraction is strong but complicated, leaving open the possibility that with a more complete treatment, or for other supernova models, active-sterile neutrino oscillations could generate conditions suitable for the r-process.

Strong magnetic field inside degenerate relativistic plasma and the impacts on the neutrino transport in Core-Collapse Supernovae

Abstract:We study the impacts of magnetic field on the neutrino transport inside core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). Magnetic field quantizes the momentum of electrons and positrons, resulting in the modification of weak-interaction cross sections and the chemical potentials of electrons and positrons. We include these changes in the leakage scheme of neutrino transport and perform 1D CCSN simulations with GR1D, assuming the postbounce magnetic field strength of $10^{16-17}$ G. The results show that the neutrino opacities are enhanced due to the amplified interaction rates, resulting in a larger neutrinosphere. This further reduces the peak value of neutrino luminosities and their decay rates since neutrinos stay longer inside the neutrinosphere. Meanwhile, the neutrino mean energies are smaller shortly after bounce and reach their peak values at later times. As these neutrino properties are crucial in subsequent nucleosynthesis processes, including the $\nu$p-process, $\nu$-process, and $r$-process, our findings suggest that the magnetic field may leave discernible marks on the abundance pattern of nucleosynthesis in CCSN.

Sterile neutrinos influence on oscillation characteristics of active neutrinos at short distances in the generalized model of neutrino mixing

Abstract:A phenomenological model with active and sterile neutrinos is used for calculations of neutrino oscillation characteristics at the normal mass hierarchy of active neutrinos. Taking into account the contributions of sterile neutrinos, appearance and survival probabilities for active neutrinos are calculated. Modified graphical dependencies for the probability of appearance of electron neutrinos/antineutrinos in muon neutrino/antineutrino beams as a function of the ratio of the distance to the neutrino energy and other model parameters are obtained. It is shown that in the case of a certain type mixing between active and sterile neutrinos it is possible to clarify some features of the anomalies of neutrino data at short distances. A new parametrization for a particular type mixing matrix of active and sterile neutrinos that takes into account the additional sources of CP violation is used. The comparison with the existing experimental data is performed and, with using this knowledge, the estimates of some model parameters are found. The theoretical results obtained for mixing of active and sterile neutrinos can be applied for interpretation and prediction of results of ground-based experiments on search of sterile neutrinos as well as for analyses of some astrophysical data.
