Abstract:We present measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry in the angular distribution of leptons from decays of top quarks and antiquarks produced in proton-antiproton collisions. We consider the final state containing a lepton and at least three jets. The entire sample of data collected by the D0 experiment during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to 9.7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, is used. The asymmetry measured for reconstructed leptons is A(FB)(l) = (2.9 +/- 2.1(stat.)(-1.7)(+1.5) (syst.))%. When corrected for efficiency and resolution effects within the lepton rapidity coverage of vertical bar y(l)vertical bar < 1.5, the asymmetry is found to be A(FB)(l) = (4.2 +/- 2.3(stat.)(-2.0)(+1.7) (syst.))%. We examine the dependence of A(FB)(l) on the transverse momentum and rapidity of the lepton. Combination with the asymmetry measured in the final states containing two leptons yields A(FB)(l) = (4.2 +/- 2.0(stat.) +/- 1.4(syst.))%. The results are in agreement with predictions from the next-to-leading-order QCD generator MC@NLO, which predicts an asymmetry of A(FB)(l) = 2.0% for vertical bar y(l)vertical bar < 1.5.

Abstract:Hadron multiplicities in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering were measured on neon, krypton and xenon targets relative to deuterium at an electron-beam energy of 27.6 GeV at HERMES. These ratios were determined as a function of the virtual-photon energy nu, its virtuality Q2, the fractional hadron energy z and the transverse hadron momentum with respect to the virtual-photon direction p_t . Dependences were analysed separately for positively and negatively charged pions and kaons as well as protons and antiprotons in a two-dimensional representation. These results will help to constrain mechanisms and models of hadronization much more decisively than by the use of integrated results as traditionally done. A few features particular to the two-dimensional representation are highlighted in this contribution.

Abstract:The current status of measurements of the nucleon structure functions and their understanding is reviewed. The fixed target experiments E665, CCFR and NMC and the HERA experiments H1 and ZEUS are discussed in some detail. The extraction of parton momentum distribution functions from global fits is described, with particular attention paid to much improved information on the gluon momentum distribution. The status of α s measurements from deep inelastic data is reviewed. Models and nonperturbative approaches for the parton input distributions are outlined. The impact on the phenomenology of QCD of the data at very low values of the Bjorken x variable is discussed in detail. Recent advances in the understanding of the transition from deep inelastic scattering to photoproduction are summarized. Some brief comments are made on the recent HERA measurements of the ep NC and CC cross-sections at very high Q 2 .

Abstract:An experimental and theoretical perspective is provided on the behavior of unpolarized distribution functions for the nucleon and pion on the valence-quark domain, namely, Bjorken x greater than or similar to 0.4. This domain is a key to much of hadron physics; e. g., a hadron is defined by its flavor content and that is a valence-quark property. Furthermore, its accurate parametrization is crucial to the provision of reliable input for large collider experiments. The focus is on experimental extractions of distribution functions via electron and muon inelastic scattering, and from Drell-Yan interactions; and on theoretical treatments that emphasize an explanation of the distribution functions, providing an overview of major contemporary approaches and issues. Valence-quark physics is a compelling subject, which probes at the heart of our understanding of the standard model. There are numerous outstanding and unresolved challenges, which experiment and theory must confront. In connection with experiment, an explanation that an upgraded Jefferson Laboratory facility is well suited to provide new data on the nucleon is provided, while a future electron-ion collider could provide essential new data for the mesons. There is also great potential in using Drell-Yan interactions, at FNAL, CERN, J-PARC, and GSI, to push into the large-x domain for both mesons and nucleons. Furthermore, it is argued that explanation, in contrast to modeling and parametrization, requires a widespread acceptance of the need to adapt theory: to the lessons learnt already from the methods of nonperturbative quantum-field theory and a fuller exploitation of those methods.

Abstract:The strong coupling constant is a fundamental parameter of nature. It can be extracted from experiments measuring three-jet events in electron-positron annihilation. For this extraction precise theoretical calculations for jet rates and event shapes are needed. In this talk I will discuss the NNLO calculation for these observables.

Abstract:The momentum and helicity density distributions of the strange quark sea in the nucleon are obtained in leading order from charged-kaon production in deep-inelastic scattering on the deuteron. The distributions are extracted from spin-averaged K± multiplicities, and from K± and inclusive double-spin asymmetries for scattering of polarized positrons by a polarized deuterium target. The shape of the momentum distribution is softer than that of the average of the u¯ and d¯ quarks. In the region of measurement 0.021.0GeV2, the helicity distribution is zero within experimental uncertainties.

Annual Review of Nuclear and Particle Science

Abstract:We review the current status of parton distribution function (PDF) determinations for unpolarized and longitudinally polarized protons and for unpolarized nuclei, which are probed by high-energy hadronic scattering in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We present the established theoretical framework, the experimental information, and the methodological aspects inherent to any modern PDF extraction. Furthermore, we summarize the present knowledge of PDFs and discuss their limitations in both accuracy and precision relevant to advancing our understanding of QCD proton substructure and pursuing our quest for precision in the Standard Model and beyond. In this respect, we highlight various achievements, discuss contemporary issues in PDF analyses, and outline future directions of progress.

Abstract:Nucleon structure functions, as measured in lepton-nucleon scattering, have historically provided a critical observable in the study of partonic dynamics within the nucleon. However, at very large parton momenta it is both experimentally and theoretically challenging to extract parton distributions due to the probable onset of non-perturbative contributions and the unavailability of high precision data at critical kinematics. Extraction of the neutron structure and the d-quark distribution have been further challenging due to the necessity of applying nuclear corrections when utilizing scattering data from a deuteron target to extract free neutron structure. However, a program of experiments has been carried out recently at the energy-upgraded Jefferson Lab electron accelerator aimed at significantly reducing the nuclear correction uncertainties on the d-quark distribution function at large partonic momentum. This allows leveraging the vast body of deuterium data covering a large kinematic range to be utilized for d-quark parton distribution function extraction. We present new data from experiment E12-10-002 carried out in Jefferson Lab Hall C on the deuteron to proton cross-section ratio at large BJorken-x. These results significantly improve the precision of existing data, and provide a first look at the expected impact on quark distributions extracted from global parton distribution function fits.

Abstract:We employed the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model to investigate the density distributions and their dependence on nuclear shapes and isospins in the superheavy mass region. Different Skyrme forces were used for the calculations with a special comparison to the experimental data in Pb-208. The ground-state deformations, nuclear radii, neutron-skin thicknesses and alpha-decay energies were also calculated. Density distributions were discussed with the calculations of single-particle wave functions and shell fillings. Calculations show that deformations have considerable effects on the density distributions, with a detailed discussion on the (292)120 nucleus. Earlier predictions of remarkably low central density are not supported when deformation is allowed for.

Abstract:The azimuthal cos phi and cos2 phi modulations of the distribution of hadrons produced in unpolarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of electrons and positrons off hydrogen and deuterium targets have been measured in the HERMES experiment. For the first time these modulations were determined in a four-dimensional kinematic space for positively and negatively charged pions and kaons separately, as well as for unidentified hadrons. These azimuthal dependences are sensitive to the transverse motion and polarization of the quarks within the nucleon via, e.g., the Cahn, Boer-Mulders and Collins effects. Abstract:An earlier extraction from the HERMES experiment of the polarization-averaged parton distribution of strange quarks in the nucleon has been reevaluated using final data on the multiplicities of charged kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering obtained with a kinematically more comprehensive method of correcting for experimental effects. General features of the distribution are confirmed, but the rise at low x is less pronounced than previously reported.

Abstract:In our contribution to the INPC98 conference we reported on the experimental investigation of high spin collective states in medium and heavy mass N approximate to Z nuclei at LNL. The main purpose is to set light on the role of the proton-neutron interaction in the collective behavior of the nucleus.In medium mass N=Z nuclei, in contrast with the stable nuclei, valence protons and neutrons occupy the same orbitals and one may expect a reinforcement of neutron-proton T=0 (np) pairing correlations[1]. In this interesting subject, the medium mass N=Z=36 Kr-72 has been studied and completely reported in [2].In this proceedings we will concentrate in unpublished results concerning the onset of collectivity on nearly spherical nuclei in the Sn-100 region. In nuclei with Z=50 and Z=49 dipole bands have been found indicating the presence of "Magnetic Rotation" [3].

Abstract:We present an analysis of $\ensuremath{\Omega},\ensuremath{\Xi},\ensuremath{\Lambda}$, and $\ensuremath{\phi}$ spectra from $\mathrm{Au}+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathit{NN}}}=200$ GeV in terms of distributions of effective constituent quarks at hadronization. Consistency in quark ratios derived from various hadron spectra provides clear evidence for hadron formation dynamics as suggested by quark coalescence or recombination models. We argue that the constituent quark distribution reflects properties of the effective partonic degree of freedom at hadronization. Experimental data indicate that strange quarks have a transverse-momentum distribution flatter than that of up/down quarks consistent with hydrodynamic expansion in partonic phase prior to hadronization. Our extracted parton transverse-momentum distributions at the hadronization provide a unique constraint on the partonic evolution history. After the multiphase transport model is tuned to reproduce the strange and up/down quark distributions, the model can describe the measured spectra of hyperons and $\ensuremath{\phi}$ mesons very well where hadrons are formed through dynamical coalescence.

Abstract:The influence of the multi-boson effects on pion multiplicities, single-pion spectra and two-pion correlation functions is discussed in terms of an analytically solvable model. It is argued that spectacular multi-boson effects are likely to be observed only in the rare events containing sufficiently high density fluctuations. The possibilities of unlike particle correlations for a study of the space-time asymmetries in particle production, including the sequence of particle emission, are demonstrated.

Abstract:The nuclear-mass dependence of azimuthal cross-section asymmetries with respect to charge and longitudinal polarization of the lepton beam is studied for hard exclusive electroproduction of real photons. The observed beam-charge and beam-helicity asymmetries are attributed to the interference between the Bethe-Heitler and the deeply virtual Compton scattering processes. For various nuclei, the asymmetries are extracted for both coherent and incoherent-enriched regions, which involve different (combinations of) generalized parton distributions. For both regions, the asymmetries are compared to those for a free proton, and no nuclear-mass dependence is found.

Abstract:Structure functions of the spin-1 deuteron will be investigated experimentally from the late 2020's at various facilities such as Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, nuclotron-based ion collider facility, and electron-ion colliders. We expect that a new high-energy spin-physics field could be created by these projects. In this paper, the current theoretical status is explained for the structure functions of spin-1 hadrons, especially on parton distribution functions, transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions, and fragmentation functions. Related multiparton distribution functions are also shown.
