Abstract:Recently, one of my articles presented intriguing findings on the superradiant stability of Kerr black holes. These findings drew conclusions that appear to challenge the established ``No Hair Theorem". As is widely known, the ``No Hair Theorem" stems from the principles of general relativity. In this paper, we thoroughly examine the nexus between Bell's theorem and the uncertainty principle. By delving deep into the theoretical underpinnings of both concepts, we illustrate that Bell's theorem occupies a more foundational stance within the landscape of uncertainty. This gives rise to a particular probability, shedding light on why the no-hair theorem might not hold in the face of quantum effects. It's possible that while the no-hair theorem remains valid, the combined effects of classical and quantum mechanics introduce additional variations to the three parameters of the black hole. This nuance could represent a modest advancement in cosmological research.

Abstract:Several hairy black hole solutions are known to violate the original version of the celebrated no-hair conjecture. This prompted the development of a new theorem that establishes a universal lower bound on the extension of hairs outside any $4$-dimensional black hole solutions of general relativity. Our work presents a novel generalization of this ``no-short hair'' theorem, which notably does not use gravitational field equations and is valid for arbitrary spacetime dimensions ($D \geq 4$). Consequently, irrespective of the underlying theory of gravity, the ``hairosphere'' must extend to the innermost light ring of the black hole spacetime. Various possible observational implications of this intriguing theorem are discussed, and other useful consequences are explored.

Abstract:We finish the proof of the no-hair theorem for stationary, analytic, connected, suitably regular, four dimensional vacuum black holes. We show how to define the surface gravity and the angular velocity of horizons without assuming analyticity. We point out that, under the usual regularity conditions, vacuum near-horizon geometries are Kerrian without assuming analyticity.

Abstract:No-hair theorems are uniqueness results constraining the form of the metric of black holes in general relativity. These theorems are typically formulated under idealized assumptions, involving a mixture of local (regularity of the horizon) and global aspects (vacuum spacetime and asymptotic flatness). This limits their applicability to astrophysical scenarios of interest such as binary black holes and accreting systems, as well as their extension to horizonless objects. A previous result due to Gürlebeck constrains the asymptotic multipolar structure of static spacetimes containing black holes surrounded by matter although not revealing the possible structure of the metric itself. In this work, we disentangle some of these assumptions in the static and axisymmetric case. Specifically: i) we show that only a one-parameter family of black-hole geometries is compatible with a given external gravitational field, ii) we also analyze the case in which the central object is close to forming an event horizon but is still horizonless and show that the deviations from the natural black-hole shape have to die off as one approaches the black hole limit under the physical principle that curvatures are bounded.

Abstract:This contribution to the proceedings of the 1999 Canadian Conference on General Relativity and Relativistic Astrophysics is a brief exposition of earlier work, with Sumati Surya (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/9805121" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/9805121">hep-th/9805121</a>) Amanda Peet (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/9903213" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/9903213">hep-th/9903213</a>), addressing certain results in higher dimensional supergravity that are related to black hole no-hair theorems. Its purpose is to describe, in language appropriate for an audience of relativists, how these results can be related to the Maldacena conjecture (aka, the AdS/CFT correspondence). The end product may be taken as a new kind of quantitative evidence in support of the Maldacena conjecture.

Abstract:In the realm of spacetimes governed by Einstein's general relativity and containing only Maxwell's electromagnetic field, stationary black holes are fully characterized by their mass, electric or magnetic charge, and angular momentum -- a property encapsulated in a version of the no-hair theorem. However, the validity of this theorem is contingent on certain assumptions, and when these are relaxed, new solutions describing hairy black holes arise. To date, astronomical observations have not provided concrete evidence of any type of black hole hair. Nevertheless, the development of increasingly precise gravitational wave detectors has sparked renewed interest in hairy black holes. In this thesis, we delve into two approaches to circumvent the no-hair theorem. The first option consists in describing the spacetime metric by an alternative theory of gravitation. We investigate the dynamical stability of hairy black holes in a vacuum spacetime described by the theory of massive bigravity. We show that hairy black holes in bigravity can describe both stellar black holes and supermassive black holes. The second approach is to keep Einstein's equations but to consider a different material content than Maxwell's electromagnetic field. For this we choose the fields of the electroweak theory. In the absence of gravitation, this theory describes magnetic monopoles with infinite mass. General relativity allows for their regularization by concealing their Coulombian singularity within an event horizon. After providing a detailed analysis of the internal structure of monopoles in flat space, we investigate how their properties generalize to the black hole case. Lastly, we study a particular example of soliton -- boson stars -- arising when a complex scalar field is coupled to general relativity. We construct chains of boson stars by solving the elliptic field equations using the finite element method.

Black Hole Hair in Higher Dimensions

Abstract:We study the property of matter in equilibrium with a static, spherically symmetric black hole in D-dimensional space time. It requires that this kind of matter has an equation of state omega equivalent to pr/rho = -n/(n + 2k), k, n is an element of N (where n > 1 corresponds to a mixture of vacuum matter and "hair" matter), which seems to be independent of D. However, when we associate this result with specific models, we find that these hairy black holes can live only in some special dimensional space time: (i) D = 2 + 2k/n while the black hole is surrounded by cosmic strings, which requires D is even or D is an element of N, depending on the value of n, this is consistent with some important results in superstring theory, it might reveal the relation between cosmic string and superstring in another aspect; (ii) the black hole can be surrounded by linear dilaton field only in 4-dimensional space time. In both cases, D = 4 is special. We also present some examples of such hairy black holes in higher dimensions, including a toy model with negative energy density.

Abstract:According to the standard view classically black holes carry no hair, whereas quantum hair is at best exponentially weak. We show that suppression of hair is an artifact of the semi-classical treatment and that in the quantum picture hair appears as an inverse mass-square effect. Such hair is predicted in the microscopic quantum description in which a black hole represents a self-sustained leaky Bose-condensate of N soft gravitons. In this picture the Hawking radiation is the quantum depletion of the condensate. Within this picture we show that quantum black hole physics is fully compatible with continuous global symmetries and that global hair appears with the strength B/N, where B is the global charge swallowed by the black hole. For large charge this hair has dramatic effect on black hole dynamics. Our findings can have interesting astrophysical consequences, such as existence of black holes with large detectable baryonic and leptonic numbers.

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of having hair on the cosmological horizon. The cosmological horizon shares similar properties of black hole horizons in the aspect of having hair on the horizon. For those theories admitting haired black hole solutions, the nontrivial matter fields may reach and extend beyond the cosmological horizon. For Q stars and boson stars, the matter fields cannot reach the cosmological horizon. The no short hair conjecture stays valid, despite the asymptotic behavior (de Sitter or anti–de Sitter) of black hole solutions. We prove the no scalar hair theorem for anti–de Sitter black holes. Using Bekenstein’s identity method, we also prove the no scalar hair theorem for de Sitter space and de Sitter black holes if the scalar potential is convex.

Abstract:We show that transonic one dimensional flows which are analogous to black holes obey no-hair theorems both at the level of linear perturbations and in non-linear regimes. Considering solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii (or Korteweg-de Vries) equation, we show that stationary flows which are asymptotically uniform on both sides of the horizon are stable and act as attractors. Using Whitham's modulation theory, we analytically characterize the emitted waves when starting from uniform perturbations. Numerical simulations confirm the validity of this approximation and extend the results to more general perturbations and to the (non-integrable) cubic-quintic Gross-Pitaevskii equation. When considering time reversed flows that correspond to white holes, the asymptotically uniform flows are unstable to sufficiently large perturbations and emit either a macroscopic undulation in the supersonic side, or a non-linear superposition of soliton trains.

Abstract:We show that in all theories in which black hole hair has been discovered, the region with non-trivial structure of the non-linear matter fields must extend beyond $3/ 2$ the horizon radius, independently of all other parameters present in the theory. We argue that this is a universal lower bound that applies in every theory where hair is present. This {\it no short hair conjecture} is then put forward as a more modest alternative to the now debunked {\it no hair conjecture}.

Abstract:Motivated by the known mathematical and physical problems arising from the current mathematical formalization of the physical spatio-temporal continuum, as a substantial technical clarification of our earlier attempt, the aim in this paper is twofold. Firstly, by interpreting Chaitin's variant of Gödel's first incompleteness theorem as an inherent uncertainty or fuzziness present in the set of real numbers, a set-theoretic entropy is assigned to it using the Kullback--Leibler relative entropy of a pair of Riemannian manifolds. Then exploiting the non-negativity of this relative entropy an abstract Hawking-like area theorem is derived. Secondly, by analyzing Noether's theorem on symmetries and conserved quantities, we argue that whenever the four dimensional space-time continuum containing a black hole is modeled by the set of real numbers in the mathematical formulation of general relativity, the hidden set-theoretic entropy of this latter structure reveals itself as the entropy of the black hole (proportional to the area of its ``instantaneous'' event horizon), indicating that this apparently physical quantity might have a pure set-theoretic origin, too.

Abstract:We analyze the quantum hair model proposed recently by Coleman, Preskill and Wilczek. We give arguments suggesting that the potential hair is expected to be destroyed by the instability of the black-hole. We also discuss the general implications of such arguments on the prospects for formulating a quantum extension of the classical ``no hair'' theorems.

Abstract:As an alternative to the "no hair conjecture," the "no short hair conjecture" for hairy black holes was established earlier. This theorem stipulates that hair must be present above 3/2 of the event horizon radius for a hairy black hole. It is assumed that the nonlinear behavior of the matter field plays a key role in the presence of such hair. Subsequently, it was established that the hair must extend beyond the photon sphere of the corresponding black hole. We have investigated the validity of the "no short hair conjecture" in pure Lovelock gravity. Our analysis has shown that irrespective of dimensionality and Lovelock order, the hair of a static, spherically symmetric black hole extends at least up to the photon sphere.

Abstract:Scalar-tensor theories are a natural alternative to general relativity, as they may provide an effective dark energy phenomenology on cosmological scales while passing local tests, but their black hole solutions are still poorly understood. Here, we generalize existing no-hair theorems for spherical black holes and specific theories in the scalar-tensor class. We show that shift symmetry prevents the appearance of scalar hairs in rotating (asymptotically flat, stationary and axisymmetric) black holes for all theories in the Horndeski/beyond Horndeski/DHOST classes, but for those with a coupling between the scalar and the Gauss--Bonnet invariant. Our proof also applies to higher dimensions. We also compute the values of the scalar hair charges if shift symmetry and asymptotic flatness are violated by a time growth of the scalar field at infinity, under suitable regularity conditions at the event horizon.

Abstract:No-hair theorems exclude the existence of nontrivial scalar and massive vector hair outside four-dimensional, static, asymptotically flat black-hole spacetimes. We show, by explicitly building nonlinear solutions, that black holes can support massive graviton hair in theories of massive gravity. These hairy solutions are, most likely, the generic end state of the recently discovered monopole instability of Schwarzschild black holes in massive graviton theories.

Abstract:The recent detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO/VIRGO collaboration has allowed for the first tests of Einstein's theory in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is simultaneously strong, non-linear and dynamical. One such test concerns the rate at which the binaries inspiral, or equivalently the rate at which the gravitational wave frequency increases, which can constrain the existence of hairy black holes. This is because black holes with scalar hair typically excite dipole radiation, which in turn leads to a faster decay rate and frequency chirping. In this paper, we present a mathematical proof that scalar hair is not sourced in vacuum, spherically symmetric spacetimes when considering extensions of Einstein's theory that break parity in gravity, focusing on dynamical Chern-Simons theory as a particular toy model. This result implies that the observational confirmation of the baldness of black holes cannot be used to constrain parity violation in gravity, unless the black holes observed are also spinning.
