Abstract:We discuss the main issues in dealing with heavy quarks on the lattice and shortly present the different approaches used. We discuss a selection of computations covering first the b-quark mass and the B(s) meson decay constants as the consolidated results (neglecting isospin breaking corrections). In the second part we consider recent calculations of form factors for tree-level semileptonic decays with emphasis on the tensions between the results produced by different collaborations. We propose benchmark quantities and tests suited to investigate the origin of such tensions. Finally, we review computations of the bag parameters parameterising neutral meson mixing and provide an overview on a few recent developments in the field.

Abstract:The present status of the theoretical estimates of beauty hadron lifetime ratios and of width differences and CP-violation parameters in $B_d$ and $B_s$ systems is reviewed. In the last two years accurate lattice calculations and next-to-leading order perturbative computations have improved these theoretical predictions, leading to the following updated results: \tau(B^+)/\tau(B_d)=1.06 +- 0.02, \tau(B_s)/\tau(B_d)=1.00 +- 0.01, \tau(\Lambda_b)/\tau(B_d)=0.88 +- 0.05, \Delta \Gamma_{d}/\Gamma_{d} = (2.42 +- 0.59)10^{-3}, \Delta \Gamma_{s}/\Gamma_{s} = (7.4 +- 2.4)10^{-2}, |(q/p)_d|-1=(2.96 +- 0.67) 10^{-4}$ and |(q/p)_s|-1=-(1.28 +- 0.28) 10^{-5}

Abstract:Lattice QCD calculations in charm and bottom physics are particularly important because they can provide the hadronic weak decay matrix elements needed for key constraints on the CKM Unitarity Triangle. I will summarise recent results in this area, paying particular attention to sources of error, comparison between methods and tests of results against experiment, for example, in the spectrum. Updated world averages for decay constants this year are : $f_{D_s}$=248.6(2.4) MeV; $f_D$ = 212.1(3.4) MeV; $f_{B_s}$ = 227(4) MeV; $f_B$ = 190(4) MeV. Note that B decay constants are clearly lower than the corresponding D decay constants. Improved $D$ semileptonic form factors, both shape and normalisation, now allow the direct determination of $V_{cs}$ and $V_{cd}$ to 3% and 5% respectively. This year we also have a clear demonstration that dependence of form factors on the spectator quark mass between light and strange is very small. Apart from the phenomenology implications, this has practical application to the normalisation of branching fractions in experiment. The current best Standard model rate for a key LHC mode sensitive to new physics - $B_{(s)} \rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-$ - is derived from lattice QCD calculations on $B/B_s$ mixing rates. I will discuss the current result and prospects for improving lattice QCD errors.

Abstract:We address the nonperturbative calculation of the inclusive decay rate of semileptonic $B_{(s)}$-meson decays from lattice QCD. Precise Standard-Model predictions are key ingredients in searches for new physics, and this type of computation may eventually provide new insight into the long-standing tension between the inclusive and exclusive determinations of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$. We present results from a pilot lattice computation for $B_s \rightarrow X_c\, l \nu_l$, where the initial $b$ quark described by the relativistic-heavy-quark (RHQ) formalism on the lattice and the other valence quarks discretised with domain-wall fermions are simulated approximately at their physical quark masses. We compare two different methods for computing the decay rate from lattice data of Euclidean $n$-point functions, namely Chebyshev and Backus-Gilbert approaches. We further study how much the ground-state meson dominates the inclusive decay rate and indicate our strategy towards a computation with a more comprehensive systematic error budget.

Hadronic decay of vector charmonium from the lattice

Abstract:Estimating decay parameters in lattice simulations is a computationally demanding problem, requiring several volumes and momenta. We explore an alternative approach, where the transition amplitude can be extracted from the spectral decomposition of particular ratios built from correlation functions. This so-called ratio method has the advantage of not needing various irreducible representations or volumes, and it allows us to predict the decay width $\Gamma$ and the energy shift $\epsilon$ of the spectrum directly. In this work, we apply this method to study the hadronic decay $\psi(3770)\to D\bar{D}$ on two CLS $N_\text{f}=2$ ensembles. This approach requires close to on-shell kinematics to work, and we employ twisted boundary conditions to precisely tune the on-shell point. Although our study is yet to approach the continuum limit, we find a value of $\Gamma$ fully compatible to the physical result, and $\epsilon$ informs us by how much our spectrum would shift in a fully dynamical simulation. Besides lattice calculations, many analytical tools have been proposed to understand decay processes. A relatively simple, early example is the ${}^3P_0$ quark model. By fixing its free parameters, we find that it describes well the lattice data for various kinematics.

Rare $B$ decays using lattice QCD form factors

Abstract:In this write-up we review and update our recent lattice QCD calculation of $B \to K^*$, $B_s \to \phi$, and $B_s \to K^*$ form factors [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1310.3722" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1310.3722">arXiv:1310.3722</a>]. These unquenched calculations, performed in the low-recoil kinematic regime, provide a significant improvement over the use of extrapolated light cone sum rule results. The fits presented here include further kinematic constraints and estimates of additional correlations between the different form factor shape parameters. We use these form factors along with Standard Model determinations of Wilson coefficients to give Standard Model predictions for several observables [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1310.3887" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1310.3887">arXiv:1310.3887</a>]. The modest improvements to the form factor fits lead to improved determinations of $F_L$, the fraction of longitudinally polarized vector mesons, but have little effect on most other observables.

Abstract:We present a study on the nonperturbative calculation of observables for inclusive semileptonic decays of $B_{(s)}$ mesons using lattice QCD. We focus on the comparison of two different methods to analyse the lattice data of Euclidean correlation functions, specifically Chebyshev and Backus-Gilbert approaches. This type of computation may eventually provide new insight into the long-standing tension between the inclusive and exclusive determinations of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$. We report the results from a pilot lattice computation for the decay $B_s \rightarrow X_c \, l\nu_l$, where the valence quark masses are approximately tuned to their physical values using the relativistic-heavy quark action for the $b$ quark and the domain-wall formalism for the other valence quarks. Abstract:$B_d$ and $B_s$ meson systems play a fundamental role to test and improve our understanding of Standard Model flavor dynamics. The mixing parameters $\Delta m_{d,s}$ represent important constraints in the unitarity triangle analysis. Their theoretical estimates require non-perturbative calculations of B-meson decay constants and B-parameters; accurate results, recently obtained from the lattice, are reviewed. Other phenomenologically interesting quantities are the beauty hadron lifetime ratios and, the width differences and CP-violation parameters in $B_d$ and $B_s$ systems. We discuss their theoretical predictions which, in the last four years, have been improved thanks to accurate lattice calculations and next-to-leading order perturbative computations.

Abstract:Semileptonic $B_s \to K \ell \nu$ decays provide an alternative $b$-decay channel to determine the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$, and to obtain a $R$-ratio to investigate lepton-flavor-universality violations. Results for the CKM matrix element may also shed light on the discrepancies seen between analyses of inclusive or exclusive decays. We calculate the decay form factors using lattice QCD with domain-wall light quarks and a relativistic $b$-quark. We analyze data at three lattice spacings with unitary pion masses down to $268\,\mathrm{MeV}$. Our numerical results are interpolated/extrapolated to physical quark masses and to the continuum to obtain the vector and scalar form factors $f_+(q^2)$ and $f_0(q^2)$ with full error budgets at $q^2$ values spanning the range accessible in our simulations. We provide a possible explanation of tensions found between results for the form factor from different lattice collaborations. Model- and truncation-independent $z$-parameterization fits following a recently proposed Bayesian-inference approach extend our results to the entire allowed kinematic range. Our results can be combined with experimental measurements of $B_s \to D_s$ and $B_s\to K$ semileptonic decays to determine $|V_{ub}|=3.8(6)\times 10^{-3}$. The error is currently dominated by experiment. We compute differential branching fractions and two types of $R$ ratios, the one commonly used as well as a variant better suited to test lepton-flavor universality.

Abstract:We present a study of ${\cal O}(2000)$ (quenched) lattice configurations from the APE collaboration, for $6.0\le\beta\le 6.4$ using both the Wilson and the SW-Clover fermion action. We determine the light hadronic spectrum and meson decay constants. We extract the inverse lattice spacing using data at the simulated values of the quark mass. We find an agreement with the experimental data of $\sim 5%$ for mesonic masses and $\sim 10%-15%$ for baryonic masses and pseudoscalar decay constants. A larger deviation is present for the vector decay constants.

Abstract:We calculate the form factors for the $B \to D^*\ell\nu_\ell$ decay in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD. For all quark flavors, we employ the Möbius domain-wall action, which preserves chiral symmetry to a good precision. Our gauge ensembles are generated at three lattice cutoffs $a^{-1} \sim 2.5$, 3.6 and 4.5 GeV with pion masses as low as $M_\pi \sim 230$ MeV. The physical lattice size $L$ satisfies the condition $M_\pi L \geq 4$ to control finite volume effects (FVEs), while we simulate a smaller size at the smallest $M_\pi$ to directly examine FVEs. The bottom quark masses are chosen in a range from the physical charm quark mass to $0.7 a^{-1}$ to control discretization effects. We extrapolate the form factors to the continuum limit and physical quark masses based on heavy meson chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order. Then the recoil parameter dependence is parametrized using a model independent form leading to our estimate of the decay rate ratio between the tau ($\ell = \tau$) and light lepton ($\ell = e,\mu$) channels $R(D^*) = 0.252(22)$ in the Standard Model. A simultaneous fit with recent data from the Belle experiment yields $|V_{cb}| = 39.19(91)\times 10^{-3}$, which is consistent with previous exclusive determinations, and shows good consistency in the kinematical distribution of the differential decay rate between the lattice and experimental data.

Abstract:Updated predictions for the decay constants of the D, Ds, B and Bs mesons obtained from Borel QCD sum rules for heavy-light currents are presented and compared with the recent lattice averages performed by the Flavor Lattice Averaging Group. An excellent agreement is obtained in the charm sector, while some tension is observed in the bottom sector. Moreover, available lattice and QCD sum-rule calculations of the decay constants of the vector D*, Ds*, B* and Bs* mesons are compared. Again some tension in the bottom sector is observed.

Abstract:We present results of a lattice computation of the vector and axial-vector current matrix elements relevant for the semileptonic decay B^0-bar -> rho^+ l^- nu_l-bar. The computations are performed in the quenched approximation of lattice QCD on a 24^3 x 48 lattice at beta = 6.2, using an O(a) improved fermionic action. Our principal result is for the differential decay rate, dGamma/dq^2, for the decay B^0-bar -> rho^+ l^- nu_l-bar in a region beyond the charm threshold, allowing a model-independent extraction of |V_{ub}| from experimental measurements. Heavy quark symmetry relations between radiative and semileptonic decays of B-bar mesons into light vector mesons are also discussed.
Lattice calculation of the $D_{s}$ meson radiative form factors over the full kinematical range

Abstract:We compute the structure-dependent axial and vector form factors for the radiative leptonic decays $D_s\to \ell\nu_\ell\gamma$, where $\ell$ is a charged lepton, as functions of the energy of the photon in the rest frame of the $D_s$ meson. The computation is performed using gauge-field configurations with 2+1+1 sea-quark flavours generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration and the results have been extrapolated to the continuum limit. For the vector form factor we observe a very significant partial cancellation between the contributions from the emission of the photon from the strange quark and that from the charm quark. The results for the form factors are used to test the reliability of various Anzätze based on single-pole dominance and its extensions, and we present a simple parametrization of the form factors which fits our data very well and which can be used in future phenomenological analyses. Using the form factors we compute the differential decay rate and the branching ratio for the process $D_s\to e\nu_e\gamma$ as a function of the lower cut-off on the photon energy. With a cut-off of 10 MeV for example, we find a branching ratio of Br$(E_\gamma>10\,\mathrm{MeV})=4.4(3)\times 10^{-6}$ which, unlike some model calculations, is consistent with the upper bound from the BESIII experiment Br$(E_\gamma>10\,\mathrm{MeV})<1.3\times 10^{-4}$ at 90% confidence level. Even for photon energies as low as 10 MeV, the decay $D_s\to e\nu_e\gamma$ is dominated by the structure-dependent contribution to the amplitude (unlike the decays with $\ell=\mu$ or $\tau$), confirming its value in searches for hypothetical new physics as well as in determining the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters at $O(\alpha_\mathrm{em})$, where $\alpha_{\mathrm{em}}$ is the fine-structure constant.

Abstract:We analyze the color-magnetic (or "$B$") field two-point function that encodes the finite-mass correction to the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient. The simulations are done on fine isotropic lattices in the quenched approximation at $1.5\,T_c$, using a range of gradient flow times for noise suppression and operator renormalization. The continuum extrapolation is performed at fixed flow time followed by a second extrapolation to zero flow time. Perturbative calculations to next-to-leading order of this correlation function, matching gradient-flowed correlators to MS-bar, are used to resolve nontrivial renormalization issues. We perform a spectral reconstruction based on perturbative model fits to estimate the coefficient $\kappa_B$ of the finite-mass correction to the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient. The approach we present here yields high-precision data for the correlator with all renormalization issues incorporated at next-to-leading order, and is also applicable for actions with dynamical fermions.

Lattice-Constrained Unitarity Bounds for $\bar B^0 \to π^+ l^- \bar ν_l$ Decays

Abstract:Lattice results, kinematical constraints and QCD dispersion relations are combined for the first time to derive model-independent bounds for QCD form factors and corresponding rates. To take into account the error bars on the lattice results we develop a general formalism which ascribes well-defined statistical properties to these bounds. We concentrate on $\bar B^0 \to \pi^+ l^- \bar\nu_l$ decays because of the relative simplicity of the analytical behavior of the relevant polarization functions and because of their immediate phenomenological relevance. To determine the range of applicability of the dispersive matching required to obtain the bounds, we have evaluated the leading perturbative and non-perturbative QCD corrections to the relevant polarization functions. Despite the lattice results' large error bars and limited kinematical range, the bounds we obtain appear to favor certain parametrizations for the form factors over others. The bounds also enable the determination of $|V_{ub}|$ from the total experimental rate with a theoretical error ranging from 27% to 37%, depending on the assumptions made. The techniques developed here are, in fact, quite general and are not limited to use with lattice results nor to semileptonic $\bar B^0 \to \pi^+ l^- \bar\nu_l$ decays.

Decay constants of heavy mesons from QCD sum rules

Abstract:We present a sum-rule extraction of the decay constants of the D, Ds, B, and Bs mesons from the two-point correlator of heavy-light pseudoscalar currents [1]. Our main emphasis is laid on the control over the uncertainties in the decay constants, related both to the input QCD parameters and to the limited accuracy of the method of sum rules. Gaining this control has become possible due to the application of our novel procedure for extracting hadron observables based on a dual threshold depending on the Borel parameter. For charmed mesons, we obtain f_D=206.2\pm 7.3 (OPE)\pm 5.1 (syst) MeV and f_Ds=245.3\pm 15.7 (OPE) \pm 4.5 (syst) MeV. For beauty mesons, the decay constants turn out to be extremely sensitive to the precise value of the MSbar mass of the b-quark, mb(mb). By requiring our sum-rule estimate to match the average of lattice determinations of f_B, a very accurate value is extracted, mb(mb)=4.245\pm 0.025 GeV, yielding f_B = 193.4 \pm 12.3 (OPE) \pm 4.3 (syst) MeV and f_Bs = 232.5 \pm 18.6 (OPE) \pm 2.4 (syst) MeV.

Theoretical Developments in Lattice Gauge Theory for Applications in Double-beta Decay Processes and Quantum Simulation

Abstract:Double beta decays are rare nuclear processes that can occur in two modes: two-neutrino double beta decay, observed in the Standard Model, and neutrinoless double beta decay, a hypothetical process with profound implications for Particle Physics. To draw reliable conclusions from their experimental constraints, it is necessary to have accurate predictions of the underlying hadronic interactions described by quantum chromodynamics (QCD), a non-Abelian gauge theory with the symmetry group SU(3). QCD predictions require non-perturbative methods for calculating observables, and lattice QCD (LQCD), a numerical method based on QCD formulated on a finite space-time grid, is the only reliable first-principles technique for obtaining quantitative results. However, LQCD needs formal prescriptions to match numerical results with observables. This thesis provides such prescriptions for double beta decays using the finite volume effects in the LQCD framework. Matching relations that connect two-nucleon double beta decay amplitudes to quantities accessible via LQCD calculations, namely the nuclear matrix elements and two-nucleon energy spectra in a finite volume are provided. The impact of uncertainties is examined on the precision with which low-energy constants of the corresponding effective field theories can be determined from future LQCD calculations. Hamiltonian simulation of QCD is another non-perturbative method of solving QCD which can be more suitable in some cases than the conventional LQCD. The rise of tensor network methods and quantum simulation has made Hamiltonian simulation of lattice gauge theories (LGTs) a reality. Towards the goal of simulating QCD, a loop-string-hadron (LSH) formulation of an SU(3) LGT with matter in 1+1 dimensions is developed in this thesis, motivated by recent studies that showed the LSH formulation of an SU(2) LGT to be advantageous over other formulations.

Abstract:We report on the calculation of the inclusive semileptonic decay of the $D_s$ meson on the lattice. We simulate the $D_s \rightarrow X_s\ell\nu_\ell$ process with Möbius domain-wall charm and strange quarks, whose masses are approximately tuned to their physical values. Our simulations cover the whole kinematical region. The focus of this work is to present updates on our strategies towards estimating the systematic uncertainties in the determination of the inclusive decay rate. We specifically focus on the systematic errors due to the choice of our approximation strategy and finite-volume effects.
