Abstract:The objective of this work was to coat aluminosilicate clays on an inert silica support, and to characterize the properties and stability of the clay-silica coating. Two polymers, polyacrylamide (PAM) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), were used to bind kaolinite, illite, and smectite onto silica grains. The clay-polymer composites were studied by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, and electrophoretic mobility. Clay coatings on silica grains were characterized by mass coverage, scanning electron microscopy, specific surface area, and pH stability. Silica sand was successfully coated with clays by using the two polymers, but with PVA, the clay coating had a greater mass coverage and was more stable against pH variations. Less polymer was needed for the clay coating using PVA as compared to using PAM. Clay-polymer complexes and pure clay minerals had similar cation exchange capacities and electrophoretic mobilities, indicating that overall surface charge of the clays was little affected by the polymers. Some decrease in hydrophilicity was observed for illite and smectite when clays where coated with the polymers. The methodology reported here allows the generation of a clay-based porous matrix, with hydraulic properties that can be varied by adjusting the grain size of the inert silica support.

Abstract:Most of work on polymer/layered silicate nanocomposites (PLSN) focused on the importance of the chemistry used to modify the surface of the clay, usually montmorillonite (MMT) and characterization of the nano-scale structure obtained in the last decade. The role and importance of processing has been paid attention only recently. Our purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the chemistry and shear on the dispersion of clay in polymer matrix via dynamic packing injection molding (DPIM), in which the melt is firstly injected into the mold then forced to move repeatedly in a chamber by two pistons that moved reversibly with the same frequency as the solidification progressively occurs from the mold wall to the molding core part. A special orientation region between the skin region and the core region is produced via imposing the reversible shear effect during the cooling of the melt. The initial MMT and organic modified MMT (abbreviated as OMMT) were directly injection molded with powdered iPP in the DPIM without pre-extrusion. Without shearing, only an intercalated structure was obtained through organic modification and the diameter of OMMT particles has a significant reduction compared to the initial MMT. Under the effect of shear, however, an intercalated morphology in the oriented region and an exfoliated morphology in the core region can be achieved. Our result suggests that both the chemistry and shear are important to determine the dispersion of clay in polymer matrix. PP/clay nanocomposites with excellent impact strength can be prepared via simple one step, direct injection molding without a conventional pre-extrusion, by dynamic packing injection molding. The observed change of impact strength could be related to the local hierarchical structure developed during the processing.

Abstract:The effect of clay on the morphology and phase-separation behavior of poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(styreneco-acrylonitrile) (PMMA/SAN) blends and the variation of clay dispersion have been investigated. With the evolution of phase separation in PMMA/SAN, most of the clays are first located at the boundaries between PMMA and SAN, and then gradually move to the PMMA-rich domain, owing to the affinity of clay to PMMA. The introduction of clay causes the increase of binodal and spinodal temperatures of PMMA/SAN and enlarges their metastable region, indicating the phase stabilizing effect of clay on the matrix. But the influence of clay on the cloud points obviously depends on the composition of PMMA/SAN. The selective adsorption of PMMA on the clay results in the difference between the composition of surface layer and that of polymer matrix. Hence, the clay plays the role of an agent changing the conditions of phase structure formation.
Effect of externally deposited nanoscale heterogeneities in thin polymer films on their adhesion behavior

Abstract:Adhesion between two surfaces depend on the chemical and the mechanical properties of both the materials. However, heterogeneities (surface or bulk) affect the adhesion between the two surfaces tremendously. In this work, we study the role of externally deposited nanoscale heterogeneities on their adhesion behavior. Silica nanoparticles in the bulk polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer matrix act as external heterogeneities, which subsequently affect their adhesion. The nanoscale heterogeneities change the polymer environment locally, which subsequently modify its mechanical properties, e.g. elastic modulus, as a result, it affects its adhesion behavior. We observe that the adhesion behavior vary in nonlinear manner with increasing nanoparticle concentration. Therefore, probing these heterogeneities may allow us to understand the emergence of processing-induced deviations and the role of external defects in the macroscopic properties of a polymer.

Interactions Between Brush-Coated Clay Sheets In A Polymer Matrix

Abstract:The interactions between clay sheets with lateral length L that are grafted by polymer chains of N monomers immersed in a chemically identical polymer melt of polymerization index P are calculated by using Edwards' self-consistent field theory. The calculation is carried out in two dimensions and shows that, as expected, for short grafted chains (aN(1/2)<<L, with a the segment size), the interactions and concentration profiles of the grafted layers are that of stretched brushes at flat interface; while for long grafted chains (aN(1/2)>>L), the interactions and concentration profiles are characteristic of star polymers. In the practically useful (but analytically untractable) case of intermediate grafted chain lengths, where aN(1/2)similar toL, we have found that the lateral length of the clay sheets is a new relevant length scale in determining the structure and interactions of the grafted layers. These results indicate that the structure and interactions of the brush-coated clay sheets can be tailored by varying the grafted chain length and/or the lateral length of the clay sheets to benefit the fabrication of polymer/clay nanocomposites. Abstract:Polymer/clay nanocomposites consisting of epoxy matrix filled with silicate clay particles were investigated. These particles consist of 1 nm thick platelets or layers with an aspect ratio in the range of 100–1000. Recent and ongoing research has shown that dramatic enhancements can be achieved in stiffness and thermal properties in these nanocomposites with small amounts of particle concentration. The resulting nanocomposite properties are intimately related to the microstructure achieved in processing these materials. The ideal situation of full exfoliation, dispersion and orientation is not usually achieved. A more common case is partial exfoliation and intercalation. The latter is a process whereby the polymer penetrates the interlayer spaces of the clay particles, causing an increase in layer spacing (d-spacing). A three-phase model, including the epoxy matrix, the exfoliated clay nanolayers and the nanolayer clusters was developed. The region consisting of matrix with exfoliated clay nanolayers or platelets was analyzed by assuming near uniform dispersion and random orientation. The properties of intercalated clusters of clay platelets were calculated by a rule of mixtures based on a parallel platelet system. The Mori–Tanaka method was applied to calculate the modulus of the nanocomposite as a function of various parameters, including the exfoliation ratio, clay layer and cluster aspect ratios, d-spacing, intragallery modulus, matrix modulus and matrix Poisson's ratio. With appropriate parameters obtained from experiments, model predictions were in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:The polymer anti-seepage wall composed of polymer materials is a new technology for impermeable reinforcement in dykes and dams. Compared with traditional grouting materials, polymer grouting materials have the advantages of early strength, convenience, good anti-seepage performance, safety and durability. Because of the particularity of polymer materials, they form a "root-like" cementing status with dam soils after grouting. This complex interface affects the interaction between the wall and the dam, which subsequently influences the whole structure's properties under loads. In this paper, based on an original designed test mould, an SRS-150 dynamic ring shear instrument was used to conduct static and dynamic ring shear tests to explore the static and dynamic properties of the polymer–silty clay interface. Moreover, influence laws and the related mechanism of different factors on the polymer–silty clay interface were studied in this paper. At the same time, the hyperbolic constitutive model of the polymer–silty clay interface was established, and the validity of the model was verified by comparing the numerical simulation with the relevant experimental results. The achievements of this paper are helpful as they provide a scientific basis for the structure's mechanical analysis and lay the foundation for the promotion and application of the new anti-seepage technology.

Abstract:Using the macromolecules self-assembly,a kind of self-assembly coatings with miniature form surface similar to lotus leaf,were prepared based on polyurethane-epoxy(IPN) as binder and large ceramic polymer particles and special adjuvant as pigments.Changing the size and content of the ceramic polymer granules,the surface of coatings was made into ideal condition.In order to optimize the size and content of the ceramic polymer granules,the tests of anti-drag property of coatings with different surfaces were achieved in self-restraint differential pressure experiment table.A new viable way of preparing wide size anti-drag coatings with macromolecules self-assembly were presented.

Abstract:Due to the complexity and diversity of components, the performance of polymer-modified cement-based coating is restricted by many factors. In this study, silicone-modified polyacrylate (SPA) emulsion and calcium sulphoaluminate (CSA) cement are used as the main materials. Based on the pigment volume concentration (PVC) and the critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC), an appropriate value range of the polymer to cement ratio (p/c) is determined and the relationship between CPVC and p/c value is established. Besides, the effects of defoamer and film-forming additive on the coating are studied. The results show that the proper p/c value can significantly improve the performance of the coating. The polymer can form a continuous membrane structure, which can cover cement particles completely, so the comprehensive performance of the coating is optimized. And the optimal dosage of film-forming additive and defoamer is 3% and 0.14%, respectively. The application research shows that the performance of the prepared coating on the mortar surface is obviously better than the commercially available polymer-modified cement-based coating and organic coating.

Abstract:Polymer/clay nanocomposite films were prepared by means of electrodeposition of aqueous suspension including cathodic electrophoretic acrylic resin (CEAR) and Na+-montmorillonite (NMMT). Studies of XRD, SEM and TEM indicated well-dispersed NMMT platelets in the films prepared. The ideal dispersity achieved was thought to be the result of aqueous compatibility between CEAR molecules and NMMT platelets and the result of the water-involved process as well. The modulus and strength of the polymer/clay nanocomposite coatings tested by tensile testing and nano-indentation were effectively improved compared to those of the virgin CEAR film. In addition, the adhesion strength, flexibility and water-resistance represented by Chinese national standard (GB) kept the best grades.
Shear strength of clayey sand treated by nanoclay mixed with recycled polyester fiber

Abstract:The main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of the nanoclay mixed with recycled polyester fiber on the mechanical behavior of soil as a new stabilizer material. To meet this objective, a series of drained direct shear and compaction tests were performed on unreinforced and reinforced soil specimens with three different combinations of the fiber-soil ratios ranging between 0.1% and 0.5%, as well as three different combinations of nanoclay-soil ratios ranging between 0.5% and 1.5% of the soil dry weight. Results indicated that composition of the nanoclay-recycled polyester fiber with the soil improved the friction angle (Φ) by 41% and cohesion (c) by 174%. The soil particles stick together through viscose gel produced by nanoclay. In addition, the rough and wavy surface of the fibers creates a bond and friction between the soil particles and prevents the movement of soil particles, and as a result, the soil strength is increased.

Abstract:The typical immiscible PP/PS blend based clay nanocomposites were prepared via melt blending. The dispersion of clay was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Thermal stability and dynamic mechanical properties were measured by thermogravimetrical analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), respectively. Preferential intercalation behavior of clay in PP/PS blends was found. The dispersion of clay is significantly influenced by the polarity of PP and PS, meanwhile the location of clay can be controlled by the alternation of the polarity of PP and PS through chemical modification. The clay migrates from PS phase to PP phase with the improvement of the polarity of PP. However, when the PS is sulfonated, clay migrates back to the dispersed PS phase again. The dispersion and location of clay have profound influence on the thermal and dynamic mechanical behavior of PP/PS blends. The better the dispersion of clay in either continuous phase or disperse phase, the higher the thermal stability of the blends. Besides, samples with clay located in the continuous phase can display the best strengthening effect.
Microstructure and Exfoliation Mechanism of Clay Particles of Epoxy/Clay Nanocomposites under External Shearing Force

Abstract:Different processing methods such as magnetical stirring, high-speed emulsifying and homogenizing and ball milling,were used to homogenously disperse the clay agglomerates and facilitate their exfoliation in epoxy/clay nanocomposites. The mechanical properties and effect of external shearing force on the exfoliation of organic clay modified with organic amine, quaternary ammonium salts and the combination of quaternary ammonium salts and meta-xylylenediamine (MXDA) were investigated. It was found that, for the general stirring, only partially exfoliated structure for the small clay particles or the external layers of large clay agglomerates were obtained. While the fine exfoliation for the external and central layers can be easily achieved by exerting vigorous shearing force, and the catalytic role of acid primary alkylammonium is not the key influencing the exfoliation of clay in epoxy matrix. The impact strength And flexural strength of epoxy/clay nanocomposites can be dramatically improved, which was about 50% and 8% higher than those of the pristine epoxy, respectively. The degree of exfoliation of clay particles will be substantially determined by the pulverization of the clay agglomerates. The smaller the size of clay particles, the better the dispersion and exfoliation of clay layers are, and a simultaneous outward shift of the external and central layers occurs.
A General Strategy for Adhesion Enhancement in Polymeric Composites by Formation of Nanostructured Particle Surfaces

Abstract:In this work we present a general methodology to enhance the interfacial adhesion in polymeric composites by creating nanoscale morphologies on the surfaces of particles. The surface morphology, which appears as inorganic whiskers, is achieved by treating silicate particles (zeolites 4A) with thionyl chloride, followed by subsequent reaction with methylmagnesium bromide (Grignard reagent). Poly(vinyl acetate) and Ultem composites containing this type of modified particles exhibit defect-free interfaces. Dynamic mechanical analysis testing reveals that such composites have higher moduli as compared to those embedded with nontreated fillers with the same loadings. Furthermore, gas permeation measurements demonstrate that these materials also show impressive enhancements in gas separation efficiency. The dramatic increase in the topological roughness (physical heterogeneity) on the sieve surfaces is proposed to provide improved interaction at the interface via thermodynamically induced adsorption and physical interlocking of polymer chains in the nanoscopic inorganic whisker structure. The presented strategy need not be tailored to a specific polymer/filler pair and therefore has potential to be extended to many other polymeric composites for a variety of applications, where tailoring polymer/solid interface compatibility is important.
Wetting characteristic and flow behavior of silicate binder at various sand particle-particle interfaces: Fine or coarse, circular or angular particles

Abstract:This study presents an innovative investigation into the wetting characteristic and flow behavior of sand particles, which have different shapes, sizes, and textures, when they bonded with silicate binder. The results revealed that the apparent contact angles of fine and angular particles with the binder are higher than those of coarse and circular particles. In addition, after modifying the four systems with anionic surfactants, the equilibrium contact angles decreased by 42.8%, 26.7%, 26.5%, and 7%. These findings suggest that coarse and circular particles demonstrate stronger wetting properties with the binder compared to fine and angled particles. Additionally, the cohesion and internal friction angle of the wet sand mixture can be measured through the ring shear test. Moreover, the unconfined yield strength and main consolidation stress can be calculated using the Mohr Coulomb model to obtain the yield locus and quantify the flowability of the wet sand mixture. The yield trajectory of sand mixtures at specific consolidation stresses suggests that the most important factor affecting the flowability of wet sand particles is particle size distribution. Wet mixtures of coarse and circular particles exhibit lower cohesive forces, indicating higher fluidity.

Abstract:The effect of selective distribution and migration behavior of two kinds of poly (methyl methacrylate)-grafted nanoclays (PMMA-g-clay) on the phase behavior of PMMA/poly (styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) blends is investigated. The grafting ratios of our two modified nanoclays are similar, but their grafting density and grafted chain lengths are different, resulting in their different initial locations and subsequent migration behaviors in the blend matrix. The PMMA-g-clay(d) nanosheets (NSs) with relatively dense and short chains are always distributed at the interfacial region and further form the percolation networks to block the concentration fluctuation and retard the domain coarsening of blend matrix more remarkably, while the PMMA-g-clay(s) NSs with relatively sparse and long chains are distributed at first in the SAN-rich domains and subsequently move slowly to the interfacial region, resulting in their inhibition of the phase separation for PMMA/SAN blend from retarding SAN chains’ viscous diffusion to their gradual interfacial aggregation for stabilizing the morphology. The variation of storage modulus for three systems in low frequency and long-time regimes are also affected by different selective distributions of two grafted clay NSs in PMMA/SAN blend matrix.

Abstract:Silica-sol/acrylate copolymer composite latexes were prepared by semicontinuous emulsion polymerization.The hard monomer,methyl methacrylate(MMA),was distributed with a gradient concentration in the radial direction,and its effects on polymerization process and adhesive properties were researched.Dynamic light scattering(DLS)was used to monitor the particle diameters and showed that the particles have grown without significant secondary nucleation occurring.The molecular parameters were characterized by gel permeation chromatography(GPC),dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA).Adhesive properties measured were loop tack force,peel strength and shear resistance according to FINAT test methods.The relationship between pressure-sensitive properties and molecular parameters,such as gel content and molecular weight,was evaluated.
Effects of Substrate Surface Characteristics on the Adhesion Properties of Geopolymer Coatings

Abstract:Geopolymer is a kind of material with a better ability of high-temperature and corrosion resistance. Poor adhesion could easily lead to problems such as coating cracks, peeling at an early stage, and inability to work with the substrate. The adhesion depends on many factors such as chemical composition of the raw materials, the formulation of the geopolymer, the type of substrate, surface roughness of the substrate, etc. The higher the Si/Al ratio, the greater the shear strength of the coating. This is because geopolymers synthesized with different Si/Al ratios have different phases in the geopolymer binder. Each study uses different multi-parameter combinations selected by itself, which is not uniform and has no universal applicability. As the parameter Ra is determined by the profile centerlines of the substrate surface, it is difficult to get an appropriate value of Ra to represent the roughness of the substrate surface. The parameter-relative area, determined by area scale fractal analysis, can effectively characterize the surface roughness, predict the texture component of bond strength, and establish a connection between which and the bonding performance of the geopolymer coating at a high level of confidence. The bonding strength reduces with the decrease in the value of the relative area. The magnitude of scale employed should be seriously determined when characterizing the surface roughness.

Abstract:The present study aims to investigate the variation of mechanical properties of clayey sand treated with cement and nano titanium dioxide (NTD). For this purpose, unconfined compression and direct shear tests were performed on mixtures of clayey sand treated with cement and NTD. To improve the number of experiments, examine the results, and optimize the content of NTD and the content of cement mixed with the clayey sand, the Response Surface Method (RSM) was used. Furthermore, the effect of NTD on the mixtures was investigated by conducting the element analysis along with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The contents of Portland cement type I, NTD, and kaolinite clay were three independent variables in the mixtures. An empirical quadratic polynomial regression equation was suggested for predicting the results. The results obtained from reviewing the FESEM images revealed that NTD filled the holes and micro-cracks of the cemented clayey sand. In addition, the nucleating effect of NTD could reduce the orientation degree of calcium hydroxide (CH) and limit the CH value by absorbing the hydration products, water, and ions. Furthermore, the nucleating effect of NTD increased with time. In addition, an efficient optimized mixture was obtained for a mixture containing 1.48% NTD, 6.04% cement, and 20% Kaolinite. The cohesion, friction angle, and unconfined compression strength of the optimized mixture were 215.3 kPa, 49.78°, and 1.503 MPa, respectively.
Revisiting bitumen-clay interaction using molecular dynamics: The role of surfactants

Abstract:Clay has been extensively applied in the research field of modified bitumen to impart excellent anti-aging properties. However, the tendency of agglomeration and nonuniform dispersion in bitumen compromises its modification effect. Surface functionalization of clay holds promise for addressing this issue by enhancing the bitumen-clay interfacial bonding strength to overcome clay self-aggregation, but it requires a profound understanding of bitumen-clay interactions. To explore the interaction mechanisms between diverse surface functionalized clay (also named organoclay) with bitumen at the molecular level and screen out the best one, this study selected four types of surfactants: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), benzethonium chloride (Byssonium), polyquaternary ammonium salt-11 (PolyQAC-11), and CTAB/3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (CTAB/APS), for surface functionalization of clay (Expanded vermiculite, EVMT). Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to determine the distribution patterns and diffusion characteristics of bitumen molecules, and the interaction energy of bitumen and clay, as well as the uniaxial tensile performance of the bitumen-clay interface. The results show that variations in types and loadings of surfactants cause distinct distribution patterns of bitumen subfractions at diverse bitumen-organoclay interfaces. Additionally, Byssonium-EVMT and PolyQAC-11-EVMT display a preference for adsorbing aromatics and resins. The introduction of surfactants significantly reduces the diffusion rates of various bitumen subfractions within the interfacial system. In terms of interaction energy, the compatibility of different clay with bitumen can be ranked as follows: Byssonium-EVMT > Na + -EVMT ≈ PolyQAC-11-EVMT > OVEMT > APS-OEVMT. The findings from tensile simulations agree well with the judgments derived from interaction energy, suggesting that Byssonium-EVMT is the optimal choice for surface functionalization, owing to its outstanding interfacial adhesion performance. This study advances the understanding of compatibility between bitumen and clay, providing theoretical insights for the development of clay-modified bitumen with improved compatibility.
