Recently appointed an editor at Development, his lab works on vascular development in plants and trees. We met Ykä in his Cambridge office to hear how a childhood passion for collecting led him to plant science, what Arabidopsis can tell us about trees and vice versa, and why he thinks there are many different ways of being successful in science.

Abstract:As changes in air temperature, precipitation, and air humidity are expected in the coming decades, studies on the impact of these environmental shifts on plant growth and functioning are of major importance. Greatly understudied aspects of climate change include consequences of increasing air humidity on forest ecosystems, predicted for high latitudes. The main objective of this study was to find a link between hydraulic acclimation and shifts in trees' resource allocation in silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) in response to elevated air relative humidity (RH). A second question was whether the changes in hydraulic architecture depend on tree size. Two years of application of increased RH decreased the biomass accumulation in birch saplings, but the biomass partitioning among aboveground parts (leaves, branches, and stems) remained unaffected. Increased stem Huber values (xylem cross-sectional area to leaf area ratio) observed in trees under elevated RH did not entail changes in the ratio of non-photosynthetic to photosynthetic tissues. The reduction of stem-wood density is attributable to diminished mechanical load imposed on the stem, since humidified trees had relatively shorter crowns. Growing under higher RH caused hydraulic conductance of the root system (K R) to increase, while K R (expressed per unit leaf area) decreased and leaf hydraulic conductance increased with tree size. Saplings of silver birch acclimate to increasing air humidity by adjusting plant morphology (live crown length, slenderness, specific leaf area, and fine-root traits) and wood density rather than biomass distribution among aboveground organs. The treatment had a significant effect on several hydraulic properties of the trees, while the shifts were largely associated with changes in tree size but not in biomass allocation.

Boreaalisten metsien hienojuurten ja sienijuurten rihmastojen karikevirtojen määrittäminen on siksi ensiarvoista hiilitaseiden määrittämiselle ja hiilen kierron mallintamiselle. Väitöskirjassa määritettiin maanpäällisen ja maanalaisen karikkeen hiilivirtoja kasvupaikkagradientilla eteläsuomalaisissa männiköissä sekä pohjoissuomalaisessa koivikossa. Lisäksi männyn kuljetus- ja ravinteidenottojuurten kasvun ajoittumista mitattiin ja verrattiin maanpäällisten ositteiden kasvun mallinnustuloksiin, jotka ennustettiin dynaamisella Cassia-mallilla. Tämä tutkimus tehtiin Etelä-Suomessa vuonna 2018, jolloin oli poikkeuksellinen kasvukautinen kuivuusjakso. Hienojuurten uusiutumista mitattiin ns. miniritsotroneilla ja juurten kasvun ajoittumista jatkuvatoimisilla skannereilla. Kummallakin menetelmällä seurattiin samojen juurten kasvua metsämaassa ajan kuluessa. Päivittäiset mittaukset osoittivat, että intensiivinen juurten kasvu ajoittui sekä kuljetus- että ravinteidenottojuurissa myöhemmäksi kuin maanpäällisissä ositteissa (puuaine, versot silmut, neulaset). Juurten kasvu alkoi lisääntyä keskikesällä neulasten kasvun vähentyessä ja jatkui syksyllä pitkään. Loppukesän kuivuus vaikutti enemmän ohuimpiin ravinteidenottojuuriin kuin paksumpiin kuljetusjuuriin, jotka ovat kestävämpiä sään vaihtelulle. Heikompi ravinteiden saatavuus lisää hiilen allokaatiota juuriin. Tutkimuskohteemme, kuivan kankaan kanervatyypin, kuivahkon kankaan puolukkatyypin ja tuoreen kankaan mustikkatyypin metsät on nimetty A.K. Cajanderin kasvupaikkaluokittelun mukaan kuvaten lisääntyvää ravinteiden saatavuutta. Ravinneköyhimmällä kuivalla kankaalla juuret elivät pitempään ja niitä oli enemmän kuin ravinteikkaammilla kuivahkolla ja tuoreella kankaalla. Sekä hienojuurten että niiden sienijuurten osuus puustossa lisääntyi siirryttäessä ravinteikkailta kasvupaikoilta ravinneköyhiin ja etelästä pohjoiseen. Maanalainen karike sekä puista että aluskasvillisuudesta oli 21-58% tutkimusmetsien kokonaiskarikkeesta. Männiköissä keskimäärin kolmasosa kokonaiskarikkeesta ja sen mukana maahan tulevasta hiilimäärästä oli peräisin juurista, mutta Pohjois-Suomen koivikossa juurikarikkeen osuus oli yli puolet kokonaiskarikkeeesta. Määritettäessä kasvua, sen ajoittumista ja karikevirtoja sekä niiden mukana maaperään tulevaa hiiltä tulisi aina tarkastella sekä puiden että aluskasvillisuuden maanpäällisiä ja maanalaisia osia. Stable isotope dendrochronology in stressed trees: insights into plant-pest interactions and physiological functions during tree life

Abstract:Although the links between plant physiological processes and stable isotopes in tree rings are well known, few studies have carried out stable isotope analyses in stressed plants. The general objective of this thesis is to develop new tools able to identify the short- and long-term responses of plants to fungal attack and insect feeding. I propose a new methodology, which uses stable isotope values as indicators of physiological responses and which was tested on infected and defoliated Norway spruce trees sampled in the south-eastern Alps. The thesis is divided into four main sections. In the first section, I present a model designed to accurately estimate environmental proxies for Picea abies, which would serve as the basis for further analyses. This model required calibration and assessment of the effects of climate on the stable isotope signature in different wood components. For this purpose, I developed a simple model to reconstruct mean annual temperature in the south-eastern Alps. I found that δ18O and δ2H values in whole wood were the best signallers of climate. The second section is aimed at clarifying the influence of environmental conditions on Norway spruce suffering from long-term infection by the white-rot fungus Heterobasidion parviporum. I found that at low elevations, where climatic conditions are unsuitable, H. parviporum was seemingly more aggressive, causing plants to decline more rapidly, decreasing the ability of host trees to cope with drought and, in some cases, arresting cambial activity. In the third section, I propose using stable isotope ratios as a physiological indicator of Norway spruce affected by H. parviporum over a long period of time and put this forward as a novel way for providing insights into plant–pathogen relationships. I obtained evidence that stomatal conductance increases in Picea abies affected by H. parviporum. The fourth section focuses on stable isotope ratios and tree-ring chronologies to investigate the short- and long-term effects of defoliation of Picea abies caused by Cephalcia arvensis. I found that drought stress prior to insect attack may have caused the trees to mobilise reserves, making them more susceptible to Cephalcia attack as a result of increased soluble sugars and amino acids

Abstract:In this study, 28 university students from two different fields – the humanities and veterinary medicine – were interviewed. The aim was to explore the role of individual interest and future goals during the first two years of university study through retrospective interviews. The results showed that, while support from the learning environment was necessary, in most cases study had to some degree been based on individual interest. A heavy workload was found to hinder interest-based studying in veterinary medicine, whereas clear future goals helped these students to remain committed. Even though individual interest played an important role in the humanities, a lack of future goals diminished students’ commitment to their studies.

Abstract:Helmi Kurrik (1883–1960) was the only female researcher who stood out in the Estonian ethnology of the 1930s. Yet she remained largely unknown in historiography until recently, associated only with the great handbook on Estonian folk costumes, published in 1938. Helmi Kurrik did not enter the academic world until she was in her forties. The twists and turns of her long life reflect the choices and constraints of Estonian women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She made a career at the Estonian National Museum, the centre of the newly established discipline of ethnology. Both her research themes and theoretical approaches, as well as her work as a curator of folk art exhibitions abroad and her contacts with foreign colleagues, illustrate the international nature of ethnology at the time. Helmi Kurrik f led to the West after World War II and adapted to a new life in the USA, but she was unable to continue her research in exile, although fellow refugee ethnologists tried to find publication opportunities for her.
Study on Xylem Structure and Histochemistry in Aquilaria Sinensis

Abstract:To study the morphological and quantitative characteristics of the xylem and histochemistry of different-aged stems in Aquilaria sinensis, the anatomical structure of the stem was analyzed using the Jeffery method, histochemical staining, and microscopic observation. The results showed that the xylem was composed of 5 parts： pith, included phloem, xylem rays, vessels, and fiber tracheids. A transverse section showed that the included phloem （foraminate type） evenly distributed in the xylem. The xylem rays belonged to heterogeneous 111. The vessel pores were generally ar- ranged as follows： radial pore clusters （2 to 4）, multiple pores, pore chains （5 to 10）, or a single pore; vestured pits were alternately arranged in the vessels＇ lateral walls. Acclivitous simple vestured pits were present in the lateral walls of the fiber tracheid. Trabeculae were present in the neighboring fiber tracheids of the pith. Embolisms were present in the vessels and the fiber tracheids. Trabeculae and embolisms were firstly observed in A. sinensis. The levels and storage tissues of starch, reducing sugars, and volatile constituents were significantly different in the different-aged xylem. This study provides basic anatomical evidence for agarwood formation.

Abstract:Abstract Silver birch ( Betula pendula ) is a pioneer boreal tree that can be induced to flower within 1 year. Its rapid life cycle, small (440-Mb) genome, and advanced germplasm resources make birch an attractive model for forest biotechnology. We assembled and chromosomally anchored the nuclear genome of an inbred B. pendula individual. Gene duplicates from the paleohexaploid event were enriched for transcriptional regulation, whereas tandem duplicates were overrepresented by environmental responses. Population resequencing of 80 individuals showed effective population size crashes at major points of climatic upheaval. Selective sweeps were enriched among polyploid duplicates encoding key developmental and physiological triggering functions, suggesting that local adaptation has tuned the timing of and cross-talk between fundamental plant processes. Variation around the tightly-linked light response genes PHYC and FRS10 correlated with latitude and longitude and temperature, and with precipitation for PHYC . Similar associations characterized the growth-promoting cytokinin response regulator ARR1, and the wood development genes KAK and MED5A .

Abstract:We evaluated the accuracy and efficiency of airborne (ALS), terrestrial (TLS) and mobile laser-scanning (MLS) methods that can be utilized in urban tree mapping and monitoring. In the field, 438 urban trees located in park and forested environments were measured and mapped from our study area located in Seurasaari, Helsinki, Finland. A field reference was collected, using a tree map created manually from TLS data. The tree detection rate and location accuracy were evaluated, using automatic or semiautomatic ALS individual tree detection (ALSITDauto or ALSITDvisual) and manual or automatic measurements of TLS and MLS (TLSauto, MLSauto, MLSmanual, MLSsemi). Our results showed that the best methods for tree detection were TLSauto and MLSmanual, which detected 73.29% and 79.22% of the reference trees, respectively. The location accuracies (RMSE) varied between 0.44m and 1.57m; the methods listed from the most accurate to most inaccurate were MLSsemi, TLSauto, MLSmanual, MLSauto, ALSITDauto and ALSITDvisual. We conclude that the accuracies of TLS and ALS were applicable for operational urban tree mapping in heterogeneous park forests. MLSmanual shows high potential but manual measurements are not feasible in operational tree mapping. Challenges that should be solved in further studies include ALSITDauto oversegmentation as well as MLSauto processing methodologies and data collection for tree detection.

Abstract:My visual artworks propose ways of being in the world-the world that humans share with non-humans. By developing projects such as breathe with a tree or listen to soil, I wish my installations to be experienced as translators. Those art projects are the result of collaborations with different teams of scientists. Together we found technological tools that could be used in art installations. These hybridizations between art and science sometimes mischievously divert technology, and instead, offer us aesthetic work with its roots deep in traditional arts and crafts knowledge. With them we can-for a moment-share time with plants, and be in dialogue with air, soil and gravity. The first project, Dendromacy, an experimental movie, was designed with a specific cooled lens thermal camera. The second one, Listening to the soil, a sounded ceramic installation started from bioacoustics recordings of the soil mega and meso-fauna.

Abstract:We analysed the diversity and distribution of plant life forms across Europe. Hemicryptophytes dominate in central Europe, while therophytes and chamaephytes thrive in the Mediterranean and dry temperate regions, and chamaephytes also in northern Europe. Habitat type strongly influences these patterns and moisture‐related predictors impact therophyte and chamaephyte diversity. Aims The Raunkiær's system classifies vascular plants into life forms based on the position of renewal buds during periods unfavourable for plant growth. Despite the importance of Raunkiær's system for ecological research, a study exploring the diversity and distribution of life forms on a continental scale is missing. We aim to (i) map the diversity and distribution of life forms in European vegetation and (ii) test for effects of bioclimatic variables while controlling for habitat‐specific responses. Location Europe. Methods We used data on life forms of 8883 species recorded in 546,501 vegetation plots of different habitats (forest, grassland, scrub and wetland). For each plot, we calculated: (i) the proportion of species of each life form and (ii) the richness and evenness of life forms. We mapped these plot‐level metrics averaged across 50 km × 50 km grid cells and modelled their response to bioclimatic variables. Results Hemicryptophytes were the most widespread life form, especially in the temperate zone of Central Europe. Conversely, therophyte and chamaephyte species were more common in the Mediterranean as well as in the dry temperate regions. Moreover, chamaephytes were also more common in the boreal and arctic zones. Higher proportions of phanerophytes were found in the Mediterranean. Overall, a higher richness of life forms was found at lower latitudes while evenness showed more spatially heterogeneous patterns. Habitat type was the main discriminator for most of the responses analysed, but several moisture‐related predictors still showed a marked effect on the diversity of therophytes and chamaephytes. Conclusions Our maps can be used as a tool for future biogeographic and macro‐ecological research at a continental scale. Habitat type and bioclimatic conditions are key for regulating the diversity and distribution of plant life forms, with concomitant consequences for the response of functional diversity in European vegetation to global environmental changes.

Abstract:Objective To clarify the characteristics of vessel elements from Artemisia capillaries.MethodsThe vessel elements in stem were observed by educts of stem's secondary xylem under biomicroscope.Results There were 3 types of vessel elements,scalariform vessel,reticulated vessel and pitted vessel,the perforation plates were simple perforation plate.The length,aperture,batter of perforation plates and the pattern of wall top showed rich variety.ConclusionArtemisia capillaries is an advanced specy in evolution of vessel element,the characteristics of vessel elements are beneficial to explain the ability of adaptation and the development.
