Abstract:Wood formation is a complex process composing many biological events. To access its key developmental stages, we have established a regeneration system that can mimic the initiation and differentiation of cambium cells for Chinese white poplar. Anatomical studies showed that new cambium and xylem re-appeared in sequence within a few weeks after being debarked. This provides the opportunity to follow key stages of wood formation by sampling clonal trees at different regeneration times. We used this system in combination with a proteomic approach to analyze proteins expressed in different regeneration stages. PMFs for 244 proteins differentially displayed were obtained and queried against public databases. Putative functions of 199 of these proteins were assigned and classified. Regulatory genes for cell cycle progression, differentiation and cell fate were expressed in the formation of cambial tissue, while 27 genes involved in secondary wall formation were predominantly found in the xylem developing stage. This indicates that the change of gene expression pattern is corresponding to the progression of second vascular system regeneration when and where the key events of wood development occur. Further exploration of these interesting genes may provide insight into the molecular mechanisms of wood formation.

Abstract:AimWoody and herbaceous habits represent one of the most distinct contrasts among angiosperms, and the proportion of woody species in floras (i.e., "woodiness" hereafter) represents a fundamental structural element of plant diversity. Despite its core influence on ecosystem processes, spatio-temporal patterns in woodiness remain poorly understood. Here, we aim to demonstrate the global spatio-temporal patterns in angiosperm woodiness and their relationship with environmental factors. LocationGlobal. Time periodCenozoic, 66 Ma to present. MethodsUsing newly compiled data on the growth forms and distributions of c. 300,000 angiosperm species and an angiosperm phylogeny, we mapped the current global geographical patterns in angiosperm woodiness, reconstructed ancestral states of growth forms through the angiosperm phylogeny and demonstrated the Cenozoic evolutionary dynamics of woodiness. We evaluated the relationships between woodiness and current climate and palaeoclimate. ResultsWe found that c. 42.7% of angiosperms are woody. Woodiness decreased spatially from the equator towards high latitudes, temporally since the early Cenozoic. Temperature was the best predictor of the spatio-temporal decline in woodiness and was positively correlated with woodiness. Despite the temporal decline in woodiness, macroevolutionary herbaceous-to-woody transitions increased through time and contributed to the evolution of woody floras in temperate drylands, whereas the opposite transitions decreased through time and contributed to herbaceous floras in tropical and subtropical drylands. Main conclusionsOur study improves understanding of the spatio-temporal dynamics of angiosperm woodiness. Our findings suggest that temperature is likely to be a determinant of spatio-temporal variations in woodiness, highlighting the role of temperature in maintaining the growth form composition of ecosystems. Our study also calls for attention to growth form transitions (e.g., secondary woodiness) in temperate drylands that have been neglected before.
Comparison of Wood Physical and Mechanical Traits Between Major Gymnosperm and Angiosperm Tree Species in China

Abstract:Many wood physical and mechanical traits are important functional attributes for tree species, but variation in these traits among taxonomic categories such as between gymnosperms and angiosperms is still poorly documented. Here, the systematic differences in 12 traits and their allometric relationships between the two tree categories and the potential effects of phylogeny are explored based on a database for major gymnosperm and angiosperm tree species across China. The results are summarized below: (1) means of wood traits were all significantly lower in gymnosperms than in angiosperms. (2) Air-dried density (ADD) and tangential shrinkage coefficient (TSC) are key traits that summarize the correlations among wood traits for gymnosperms, while ADD and radial shrinkage coefficient (RSC) represent those for angiosperms. The allometric slopes of other traits, except for hardness of transverse section (HES), against ADD for gymnosperms were significantly steeper than or similar to the corresponding slopes for angiosperms. On the contrary, the slopes of other traits (except TSC) against RSC for gymnosperms were shallower than or similar to their counterparts for angiosperms. Generally, wood traits were positively related with each other, except that TSC was negatively related to density-related (ADD, BD) and hardness-related traits (HES, HRS and HTS) in gymnosperms. (3) Phylogeny had significant effects on some wood traits of gymnosperms, but had no effects on traits of angiosperms. The present analyses demonstrated a systematic difference in wood traits between two major plant categories, which suggests the evolutionary divergence (TSC, RSC) and convergence (ADD) in key functional traits among woody plants.

Abstract:Recent advances in wood physiology, molecular phylogeny, and ultrastructure (chiefly scanning electron microscopy, SEM), as well as important new knowledge in traditional fields, provide the basis for a new vision of how wood evolves. Woody angiosperms have, in the main, shifted from conductive safety to conductive efficiency (with many variations and modifications) and from ability to resist cavitation (low vulnerability) to ability to refill vessels. The invention of the vessel was a kind of dimorphism (vessel elements plus tracheids) that permitted division of labor and many kinds of wood repatterning that suit conductive safety–efficiency trade-offs. Angiosperms were primarily adapted to mesic habitats but were not failures or “unstable.” They have survived to the present in such habitats well, along with older structural adaptations (e.g., the scalariform perforation plate) that are still suited to such habitats. These “primitive” features are evident in earlier branchings of phylogenetic trees based on multiple genes. Older features may still be functional and thus persist, although newer formulations are overriding in effect. There are, however, numerous instances of “breakouts” in a number of clades (ecological iterations and bursts of speciation and diversification related to new ways of dealing with water economy), whereas in other branchings, other clades show ecological stasis over long periods of time. Newer physiological and anatomical mechanisms have permitted entry into habitats with marked fluctuation in moisture availability. Wood evolves progressively, and literal character state reversal may be unusual: genomic and developmental information holds answers to these changes. Wood is a complex tissue, and each of the histological components shows polymorphism as an evolutionary mechanism. Cell types within wood evolve collaboratively. Shifts in wood features (e.g., simplification of the scalariform perforation plate) are commonly homoplastic. Manifold changes in habit and in leaf physiology, morphology, and anatomy accompany wood evolution, and wood should be studied with relationship to real-world ecology, information that cannot be gleaned from literature or other secondary sources. Heterochrony (protracted juvenilism, accelerated adulthood) characterizes angiosperm xylem extensively, far more so than in other vascular plants, and these mechanisms have resulted in many remarkable changes (e.g., monocots have permanently juvenile xylem, woody trees represent accelerated adulthood). Understanding the many successful features of angiosperm wood evolution must ultimately rest on syntheses.

Abstract:This methodological study describes the adaptation of a new method in digital wood anatomy, pixel-contrast densitometry, for angiosperm species. The new method was tested on eight species of shrubs and small trees in Southern Siberia, whose wood structure varies from ring-porous to diffuse-porous, with different spatial organizations of vessels. A two-step transformation of wood cross-section photographs by smoothing and Otsu's classification algorithm was proposed to separate images into cell wall areas and empty spaces within (lumen) and between cells. Good synchronicity between measurements within the ring allowed us to create profiles of wood porosity (proportion of empty spaces) describing the growth ring structure and capturing inter-annual differences between rings. For longer-lived species, 14–32-year series from at least ten specimens were measured. Their analysis revealed that maximum (for all wood types), mean, and minimum porosity (for diffuse-porous wood) in the ring have common external signals, mostly independent of ring width, i.e., they can be used as ecological indicators. Further research directions include a comparison of this method with other approaches in densitometry, clarification of sample processing, and the extraction of ecologically meaningful data from wood structures.

Abstract:This work aimed at utilizing wood anatomical traits to assess the compatibility or suitability of 9 species in the families where they belong since the earlier classification depended only on morphological characters and also to possibly deduce the permeability of their vessel lumen during wood treatment with preservatives of equal or different viscosity. Comparative stem anatomy of tree taxa Antiaris toxicaria Lesch. (Moraceae), Ficus exasperate Vahl. (Moraceae), Milicia excelsa Welw. (Moraceae), Dacryodes klaineana Lam. (Burseraceae) Canarium schweinfurthii Engl. (Burseraceae), Dacryodes edulis Lam. (Burseraceae), Erythrophleum suaveolens Taub. (Fabaceae), Pelthophorum pterocarpum De Cand. (Fabaceae), Pterocarpus soyauxii Taub. (Fabaceae) was studied. Observations on the transverse, radial-longitudinal and tangential-longitudinal sections showed that there were vast variations and few similarities in the vessel, axial parenchyma, ray cell and storied fibre distributions within and across families. Variations across the three ecological zones were found. The highest vessel diameter occurred in C. schwenfortii with 222.84μm (Burseraceae) followed by F. Exasperate with 196.42 μm (Moraceae) and P. pterocarpum with 187.23 μm (Fabaceae) across the three ecological zones. Vessel diameters were in direct proportion with the amount of rainfall while vessel frequencies were in negative proportion with the amount of rainfall across the ecological zones. Qualitative properties were not significantly affected by either temperature or rainfall.

Abstract:Hamamelis (Hamamelidaceae) consists of four to six species disjunctly distributed in eastern Asia and eastern North America. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted using sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the nuclear ribosomal DNA. The North American species of Hamamelis formed a monophyletic group. The previously proposed close relationship between the eastern Asian H. japonica and the eastern North American H. vernalis was not supported by the ITS phylogeny. The lack of direct intercontinental sister species relationship was reported from most other eastern Asian and eastern North American disjunct genera, suggesting the relative antiquity of the disjunct pattern. Fossil evidence supported the Bering land bridge hypothesis as the explanation for the formation of the disjunct pattern in Hamamelis. Although generally treated under the synonymy of H. virginiana, H. macrophylla from southeastern US and H. mexicana from Mexico had an identical ITS profile with H. vernalis from the Ozark Plateau, but distinct from H. virginiana, suggesting the need for a taxonomic reexamination.

Abstract:Abstract Taxus chinensis is a well-known gymnosperm with great ornamental and medicinal value. Its purple red brown heartwood (HW) has many attributes such as straight texture, high density, mechanical strength, rich elasticity and corrosion resistance that is highly prized commercially. T. chinensis sapwood (SW), in comparison, lacks these important traits. At present, little is known about the differences of metabolites between the SW and HW in T. chinensis . Widely targeted metabolic profiling was performed to analyze the metabolic profiles of HW and SW in T. chinensis using Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry (LC-EI-MS). A total of 607 metabolites were detected in HW and SW. Among them, 146 metabolites were significantly higher, and 167 metabolites significantly lower, in HW as compared to SW. These differential metabolites were mainly involved in metabolic pathways and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, flavone and flavonol, phenylpropanoids and antibiotics. Moreover, 71 flavonoids and isoflavones were found to be significantly different between HW and SW. Our results show the difference of components between the HW and SW, which has potential significance to further elucidate the mechanism of HW color formation. The results will provide insight into the metabolites associated with wood color formation and useful information for understanding the metabolites associated with wood quality.

Abstract:Wood-inhabiting fungi are found in living trees, decorticated wood of dead tree branches and trunks as well as manufactured wood products, and play an important role in forest ecosystems as an important group of decomposers. In this present study, two new wood-inhabiting fungal taxa, Candelabrochaete yunnanensis and Hyphodermella sinensis are proposed based on a combination of the morphological features and molecular evidence. Candelabrochaete yunnanensis is characterized by the farinaceous basidiomata with the flesh-pinkish to brownish vinaceous hymenial surface, a monomitic hyphal system with simple-septate generative hyphae, presence of the cylindrical septocystidia and ellipsoid basidiospores (4–5 × 2.5–3 μm). Hyphodermella sinensis is characterized by the membranaceous basidiomata having the white to slightly greyish hymenial surface, a monomitic hyphal system with clamp generative hyphae, presence of the clavate cystidia and ellipsoid basidiospores (4–6 × 3–4 μm). The phylogenetic tree inferred from ITS+nLSU sequences revealed that Candelabrochaete yunnanensis was nested into the family Irpicaceae within the order Polyporales, in which it was closely related to the species C. africana; Hyphodermella sinensis grouped into the genus Hyphodermella and clustered into the family Phanerochaetaceae, in which it grouped with H. aurantiaca and H. zixishanensis.

Abstract:Dendroecological research uses information stored in tree rings to understand how single trees and even entire forest ecosystems responded to environmental changes and to finally reconstruct such changes. This is done by analyzing growth variations back in time and correlating various plant-specific parameters to (for example) temperature records. Integrating wood anatomical parameters in these analyses would strengthen reconstructions, even down to intra-annual resolution. We therefore present a protocol on how to sample, prepare, and analyze wooden specimen for common macroscopic analyses, but also for subsequent microscopic analyses. Furthermore we introduce a potential solution for analyzing digital images generated from common small and large specimens to support time-series analyses. The protocol presents the basic steps as they currently can be used. Beyond this, there is an ongoing need for the improvement of existing techniques, and development of new techniques, to record and quantify past and ongoing environmental processes. Traditional wood anatomical research needs to be expanded to include ecological information to this field of research. This would support dendro-scientists who intend to analyze new parameters and develop new methodologies to understand the short and long term effects of specific environmental factors on the anatomy of woody plants.

Biodiversitas 21: 1578-1587. Anatomical attributes are important tools for taxonomic studies of plants. The present study compared anatomical characteristics (i.e. lamina, petiole and wood) of two species of Chrysophyllum (namely Chrysophyllum cainito L. and C. roxburghii G.Don) belonging to family Sapotaceae in Thailand to develop taxonomic identification keys for two species of Chrysophyllum. Peeling and clearing methods were used for epidermal study, paraffin method for lamina and petiole transverse sections and standard microtome sectioning for anatomical analyses of wood. The findings of this study demonstrated the leaf and wood anatomical features presenting in C. cainito differs from those in the species of C. roxburghii including 1) shape and outline of epidermal cell wall 2) presence or absence of T-shaped trichome 3) presence or absence of inclusions 4) shape of vascular bundle and accessory bundle in midrib 5) shape of petiole and vascular bundle 6) grouping type of vessel 7) type of axial parenchyma 8) presence or absence of inclusions in rays and 9) thickness of fiber walls. Therefore, these characteristics can be used valuably as additional data in case of taxonomic studies of Thai Chrysophyllum.
Anatomical Characteristics of Beech (Fagus L.) Species in Zhejiang and Their Taxonomic Significance

Abstract:According to different authors, there are 4～6 beech ( Fagus L.) species (including one variety) in Zhejiang Province, some of which are still unclear in their systematical taxonomy. In order to provide anatomical data for their taxonomy, an anatomical study on foliar and wood was conducted for 5 taxa, F.longipetiolata Seem., F.lucida Rehd. et Wils., F.bashanica Yang, F.tientaiensis Liou,and F.hayatae var. zhejiangensis Liu et Wu.As a result,anatomical characteristics of foliar and wood showed a remarkable inter\|and intra\|specific variation,but the interspecific changes in leaf surface and leaf anatomical features indicated a clustery trend. A cluster analysis by using the anatomical data showed that F.tientaiensis belonged to F.longipetiolata , and F.hayatae var. zhejiangensis to F.bashanica. Based on the present study and a literature review,it was concluded that 4 beech species, F.longipetiolata,F.lucida,F.bashanensis and F.engleriana , were distributed in Zhejiang Province. However, systematical relationship between F.bashanica and F.hayatae remained unclear and more studies should be needed.

Abstract:In order to match the needs of protection and future repair of ancient architecture,wood structures were studied to identify the wood species in the main hall of Baoguo Temple at Ningbo.Macroand microscopic characteristics of 287 samples were examined by slice technique and light electron microscopy.The results show that there are nine tree species in the main hall of Baoguo temple,of which six are softwoods,i.e.Cunninghamia,Pinus,Picea,Chamaecyparis,Larix and Glyptostrobus and three hardwoods,i.e.Dipterocarpus,Castanopsis and Castanea.

Abstract:This study investigated the anatomical and non-anatomical characteristics of six wood species, Acacia mangium, Acacia hybrid, Dillenia pentagyna, Anacardium occidentale, Hevea brasiliensis, and Melaleuca cajuputi, from a plantation in Vietnam. The anatomical characteristics and non-anatomical characteristics were observed following the International Association of Wood Anatomists (IAWA) list. All species showed diffuse porosity and non-septate fibers. Exclusively solitary vessels were only observed in M. cajuputi. Vestured pits were observed in A. mangium, A. hybrid, and M. cajuputi, and tyloses were found in A. occidentale and H. brasiliensis. We observed vasicentric axial parenchyma in A. mangium, A. hybrid, A. occidentale, and H. brasiliensis, whereas diffuse axial parenchyma was observed in D. pentagyna and M. cajuputi. Further, prismatic crystals in the axial parenchyma cells existed in A. mangium, A. hybrid, and H. brasiliensis, and raphides in ray cells were observed in D. pentagyna. Silica bodies in ray cells were found in A. occidentale and M. cajuputi. H. brasiliensis exhibited the greatest vessel diameter and ray height, with D. pentagyna exhibiting the greatest fiber length and wall thickness. All the species showed considerable differences in heartwood fluorescence, water and ethanol extract colors, and froth test reactions.

Modification of Cambial Cell Wall Architecture During Cambium Periodicity in Populus Tomentosa Carr.

Abstract:Cambium periodicity is correlated with changes in the cambial cell wall, but the heterogeneity of cell wall structure and composition makes it difficult to give an accurate interpretation, especially for complex secondary vascular tissues. A combination of different methods is necessary to reveal the structure of this complex cell wall. In this study, the cell wall architecture and composition of active and dormant cambial cells in Populus tomentosa were investigated by a combination of light microscopy, rapid-freezing and deep-etching electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared microspectroscopy and immuno-histochemistry. The results showed that the architecture of dormant cambial cell walls displayed a multi-layered structure, denser fibril network, smaller pore size, and fewer crosslinks between microfibrils than active cambial cell walls. The FTIR spectra of cell walls from active and dormant cambium showed differences in the intensity of bands near 1,740, 1,629, 1,537, 1,240, and 830 cm−1, which reflected differences in cell wall composition. Immuno-labeling indicated that high methyl-esterified homogalacturonan and (1 → 4)-β-d-galactan epitopes were abundant and distributed in active cambial cell walls, and relatively de-esterified homogalacturonan and (1 → 5)-α-l-arabinan epitopes had weak labeling in the active cambium, while almost no labeling or very weak labeling for high methyl-esterified homogalacturonan, (1 → 4)-β-d-galactan and (1 → 5)-α-l-arabinan epitopes occurred in dormant cambial cells, except for the de-esterified homogalacturonan epitope, which was abundant in dormant cambial cells. These results demonstrate that there are great differences, both in structure and composition, between active and dormant cambial cell walls, which reflect their dynamic changes during cambium activity.

Abstract:Summary Ginkgo biloba L., a long-lived relict species, has high ecological, cultural and economic value. Studying the quantitative wood anatomy of G. biloba is important to understand the relationships between their tree-growth and climate change, which could help in the protection of old G. biloba trees. Preparing high-quality wood thin sections is the premise of quantitative wood anatomy analysis. In addition, manual correction of image analysis is a time-consuming process. We therefore present a protocol on how to make G. biloba high-quality xylem thin sections, from sample preparation, sample embedding, blade selection to thickness selection. We also present a method to determine the necessary sample width and number of cores to establish reliable wood anatomical time series that both can capture climate signals and reduce the time used for image analysis. For microsection preparation, it is optimal to cut 20–30- μ m-thick sections using Leica DB80 blades after applying the cornstarch solution on top of the sample surface. For image analysis, the reliable wood anatomical time series can be established when measuring six cores (trees) or above, and the environmental signals are captured when analyzing a 1.2-mm-wide radial strip along the increment core (deviation <2%) for the parameters cell density, mean lumen area, potential hydraulic conductivity and percentage of the conductive area. This paper provides practical guidance to successfully use quantitative wood anatomy methods on G. biloba . We hope our study will be helpful for future research on the quantitative wood anatomy of G. biloba and similar tree species.

Taxonomy and Phylogeny of the Wood-Inhabiting Fungal Genus Hyphoderma with Descriptions of Three New Species from East Asia

Abstract:Three new wood-inhabiting fungi, Hyphoderma crystallinum, H. membranaceum, and H. microporoides spp. nov., are proposed based on a combination of morphological features and molecular evidence. Hyphoderma crystallinum is characterized by the resupinate basidiomata with smooth hymenial surface scattering scattered nubby crystals, a monomitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, and numerous encrusted cystidia present. Hyphoderma membranaceum is characterized by the resupinate basidiomata with tuberculate hymenial surface, presence of the moniliform cystidia, and ellipsoid to cylindrical basidiospores. Hyphoderma microporoides is characterized by the resupinate, cottony basidiomata distributing the scattered pinholes visible using hand lens on the hymenial surface, presence of halocystidia, and cylindrical to allantoid basidiospores. Sequences of ITS+nLSU rRNA gene regions of the studied samples were generated, and phylogenetic analyses were performed with maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and Bayesian inference methods. These phylogenetic analyses showed that three new species clustered into Hyphoderma, in which H. crystallinum was sister to H. variolosum, H. membranaceum was retrieved as a sister species of H. sinense, and H. microporoides was closely grouped with H. nemorale. In addition to new species, map to show global distribution of Hyphoderma species treated in the phylogenetic tree and an identification key to Chinese Hyphoderma are provided.

Abstract:Hyb-Seq and RAD-seq are well-established high throughput sequencing technologies that have been increasingly used for plant phylogenomic studies. Each method has its own pros and cons. The choice between them is a practical issue for plant systematists studying the evolutionary histories of biodiversity of relatively recent origins. However, few studies have compared the congruence and conflict between results from the two methods within the same group of organisms in plants. In this study, we employed RAD-seq and Hyb-Seq of Angiosperms353 genes in phylogenomic and biogeographic studies of Hamamelis (the witch-hazels) and Castanea (chestnuts), two classic examples exhibiting the well-known eastern Asian (EA) -eastern North American (ENA) disjunct distribution, and compared them side by side. Our results showed congruences in phylogenetic inference and divergence time dating between the two data sets obtained through our customized procedures of library preparation and sequence trimming, although they differed in the number of loci and informative sites, the amount of missing data, and sampling within species. We provide recommendations regarding the selection of the two methods for phylogenomic study at generic level based on fund availability and sampling scale. If funds and time are not constrained, we recommend Hyb-Seq. If funds and time are somewhat limited and sampling is large, we recommend RAD-seq. However, we found greater conflict among gene trees from the RAD-seq data due to the short sequences per locus. Therefore, species tree building and network detecting with the RAD-seq data with short RAD-seq loci (e.g., <150 bp) should avoid using analytical methods relying on gene trees of individual locus, but using site-based methods such as SVDQuartets and D-statistic method. Our phylogenetic analyses of RAD-seq and Hyb-Seq data resulted in well-resolved species relationships. Analyses of the data using the D-statistic test and PhyloNet revealed ancient introgressions in both genera. Biogeographic analyses including fossil data using total evidence-based dated tree and DEC model applying specific inter-area dispersal probabilities revealed a complicated history for each genus, indicating multiple interareal dispersals and local extinctions within and outside areas of the taxa's modern ranges in both the Paleogene and Neogene. The study demonstrates the importance of including fossil taxa for a more accurate reconstruction of biogeographic histories of taxa to understand the EA and ENA floristic disjunction. Our results support a widespread ancestral range in EA-western North America (WNA) followed by early diversification in EA and expansion to North America (NA) and Europe for Castanea and a more widespread ancestral range in EA-ENA-WNA for Hamamelis. The origins of the modern EA-ENA disjunction in both genera were suggested to be the result of vicariance from widespread ancestors in Eurasia-ENA of the mid-Miocene and in EA-NA of the late Oligocene, respectively.

Abstract:The cliff fern family Woodsiaceae has experienced frequent taxonomic changes at the familial and generic ranks since its establishment. The bulk of its species were placed in Woodsia, while Cheilanthopsis, Hymenocystis, Physematium, and Protowoodsia are segregates recognized by some authors. Phylogenetic relationships among the genera of Woodsiaceae remain unclear because of the extreme morphological diversity and inadequate taxon sampling in phylogenetic studies to date. In this study, we carry out comprehensive phylogenetic analyses of Woodsiaceae using molecular evidence from four chloroplast DNA markers (atpA, matK, rbcL and trnL-F) and covering over half the currently recognized species. Our results show three main clades in Woodsiaceae corresponding to Physematium (clade I), Cheilanthopsis-Protowoodsia (clade II) and Woodsia s.s. (clade III). In the interest of preserving monophyly and taxonomic stability, a broadly defined Woodsia including the other segregates is proposed, which is characterized by the distinctive indument and inferior indusia. Therefore, we present a new subgeneric classification of the redefined Woodsia based on phylogenetic and ancestral state reconstructions to better reflect the morphological variation, geographic distribution pattern, and evolutionary history of the genus. Our analyses of the cytological character evolution support multiple aneuploidy events that have resulted in the reduction of chromosome base number from 41 to 33, 37, 38, 39 and 40 during the evolutionary history of the cliff ferns.

Abstract:In the present study, the microscopic structures of the wooden components in the Xichuan Guild Hall were observed through the bright-field microscope to identify the tree species. The extent of decay of these wooden components was observed using polarized light and fluorescence microscopes, respectively. The results are as follows: (1) Sample Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 belonged to hemor woods (Schimaspp.), and sample Nos. 3 and 6 belonged to red oak woods (Quercus rubra). (2) Almost no brightness of crystalline cellulose birefringence (BCCB) was found in S layers of wood fibres of the fungal-decayed hemor woods, indicating an obvious decomposition of the celluloses in S layers. The brightness of fluorescence (BF) of all cell walls was also lower, indicating that lignin in cell walls was seriously decomposed by the decay fungi. (3) Almost no BCCB was found in vessels and S layers of wood fibres of the fungal-decayed red oak woods, indicating that celluloses were seriously decomposed. The BF of cell walls of vessels and CML layer of wood fibres was evident, indicating that lignin was abundant in cell walls of vessels and CML layer of wood fibres.
