Abstract:We critically review the basic assumptions of the standard model for the synthesis of the XRB in the light of new data from ultradeep surveys by Chandra and XMM, resolving major parts of it. Important constraints come in particular from the observed z-distributions of faint hard X-ray sources -- showing large excesses at redshifts (z~0.8) much lower than expected by the synthesis models -- and from their X/optical/IR SEDs combined with the IR counts of type-II AGNs. Our analysis, although supporting the general scheme which interprets the XRB as due to absorbed AGNs with broad N_H distributions, requires major revision of the other postulate of the XRB synthesis models: the AGN unification. We argue that the unification scheme based on a simple orientation effect fails at high redshifts, where galaxy activity is induced by strong interactions and mergers among gas-rich systems. This helps explaining the observational evidence that type-I and II AGNs follow different evolutionary patterns, with type-I quasars providing a very biased trace of this activity. Combined deep X-ray and IR surveys consistently find that the universe has experienced a violent phase of galaxy activity around z~1, probably related with the assembly of massive galaxies, involving both SF and obscured AGN fueling. Roughly 10 to 20% of this activity has involved substantial AGN emission, this fraction likely reflecting the AGN/starburst duty cycle during the activation phase.

Abstract:The role of X-ray observations for cosmological studies and conclusions is briefly explored. X-rays currently yield cosmologically interesting results on the abundances, evolution and gas content of clusters of galaxies, on the clustering and evolution of active galaxies and on the X-ray Background. They are unlikely in the long term future to give the most precise values of the cosmological parameters, although in the short term the baryon fraction of clusters and the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect will remain important determinants and checks for some parameters. X-rays will however continue to play an important role in studying the astrophysics of the formation and growth of black holes, galaxies, groups and clusters. It is possible that this role will be crucial, if winds from active galaxies are responsible for breaking the simple gravitational scaling laws for clusters.

Abstract:We discuss the constraints on the AGN evolution from the cosmic X-ray background and source counts. A synthesis model to fit the X-ray background is presented. In the model, the spectrum of type 2 AGN has been modeled including Compton down--scattering within the absorbing material. Besides, we introduced a dependence on redshift of the relative number of obscured sources and found a decrease of the fraction of type 2 AGN at redshifts larger than 2.

Abstract:X-ray appearance of normal galaxies is mainly determined by X-ray binaries powered by accretion onto a neutron star or a stellar mass black hole. Their populations scale with the star-formation rate and stellar mass of the host galaxy and their X-ray luminosity distributions show a significant split between star-forming and passive galaxies, both facts being consequences of the dichotomy between high- and low-mass X-ray binaries. Metallicity, IMF and stellar age dependencies, and dynamical formation channels add complexity to this picture. The numbers of high-mass X-ray binaries observed in star-forming galaxies indicate quite high probability for a massive star to become an accretion powered X-ray source once upon its lifetime. This explains the unexpectedly high contribution of X-ray binaries to the Cosmic X-ray Background, of the order of $\sim 10\%$, mostly via X-ray emission of faint star-forming galaxies located at moderate redshifts which may account for the unresolved part of the CXB. Cosmological evolution of the $L_X-{\rm SFR}$ relation can make high-mass X-ray binaries a potentially significant factor in (pre)heating of intergalactic medium in the early Universe.

X-Ray Observations of Radio Galaxies

Abstract:We review some of the ways that X-ray observations provide unique information on radio galaxies. Thermal bremsstrahlung X-ray emission provides detailed data on ambient densities and temperatures. These parameters in turn can be used for pressure balance calculations and can demonstrate how the ambient gas affects radio source structure. Additionally, many signatures of the interaction of radio jets and lobes with the hot gas are found in high resolution X-ray maps. Non-thermal X-ray emission from knots and hotspots of radio jets can give us constraints on the relativistic electron population for energies greater that that normally sampled in the radio (in the case of synchrotron emission) or can give us an independent estimate of the average magnetic field strength (if inverse Compton emission is the origin of the X-rays). From recent ROSAT HRI observations of 3C 390.3 and 3C 120, we show evidence that X-ray emission from knots and hotspots appears to be associated with regions of large gradients in the radio surface brightness; i.e. at the location of powerful shocks.

Abstract:Blazar emission of gamma rays and cosmic ray production of gamma rays in gas-rich clusters have been proposed recently as alternative sources of the high energy extragalactic diffuse gamma ray background radiation. We show that these sources also produce a very different high energy extragalactic diffuse neutrino background radiation. This neutrino background may be detected by the new generation of large neutrino telescopes under construction and may be used to trace the origin of the extragalactic gamma radiation.

Abstract:Recent X-ray observations have had a major impact on topics ranging from protostars to cosmology. They have also drawn attention to important and general physical processes that currently limit our understanding of thermal and nonthermal X-ray sources. These include unmeasured atomic astrophysics data (wavelengths, oscillator strengths etc.), basic hydromagnetic processes (e.g. shock structure, reconnection), plasma processes (such as electron-ion equipartition and heat conduction) and radiative transfer (in disks and accretion columns). Progress on these problems will probably come from integrative studies that draw upon observations, throughout the electromagnetic spectrum, of different classes of source. X-ray observations are also giving a new perspective on astronomical subjects, like the nature of galactic nuclei and the evolution of stellar populations. They are contributing to answering central cosmological questions including the measurement of the matter content of the universe, understanding its overall luminosity density, describing its chemical evolution and locating the first luminous objects. X-ray astronomy has a healthy future with several international space missions under construction and in development.

Abstract:There is now growing evidence that the soft X‐ray excess is almost ubiquitous among unobscured active galaxies. In spite of the various interpretations that have been considered in the past few years, the nature of this foremost spectral feature is not firmly established yet. In this context, we review from a reflection perspective the three highest quality X‐ray observations of the narrow‐line type 1 Seyfert galaxy Tonantzintla (Ton) S180, obtained by XMM–Newton and Suzaku. The X‐ray spectrum of Ton S180 shows only moderate variations over a time span of several years, suggesting that the same physical process accounts for the bulk of the broad‐band X‐ray emission at the different epochs, and that the properties of the X‐ray source are fairly stable. We have successfully applied in our spectral analysis a dual‐reflector model, consisting of two separate components: one arises from the surface of the accretion disc, is highly ionized and blurred by relativistic effects; the other is cold, quite faint and can be associated with a distant reprocessor. Due to the strength and the nearly power‐law shape of its soft excess emission, Ton S180 is one of the most challenging sources to test the X‐ray reflection scenario. In this work we provide a clear illustration of the great potential and spectral flexibility of blurred reflection models, while discussing some of their current limitations and possible shortcomings.

Abstract:The X-ray observatories XMM-Newton and Chandra provided a wealth of exciting new results. Chandra delivered X-ray images of outstanding detail, reaching subarcsecond spatial resolution for the first time in X-ray astronomy. XMM-Newton provided the highest-signal X-ray spectra ever taken. The imaging and spectral observations are greatly improving our understanding of the physical processes in the central region of active galaxies. The increased sensitivity also allows to peer into the high-redshift universe beyond z=5. I shall provide a review of recent X-ray highlights on (radio-quiet) AGN from low to high redshift, and exciting questions still open. I conclude with a glimpse into the future of X-ray astronomy.

Abstract:Flow past a line vortex in a simple perfect fluid or superfluid gives rise to a transverse Magnus force that is given by the well known Joukowski lift formula. The problem of generalising this to multiconstituent superfluid models has been controversial since it was originally posed by the work of Iordanski in the context of the Landau 2-constituent model for He-4 at finite temperature. The present work deals not just with this particular case but with the generic category of perfect multiconstituent models including the kind proposed for a mixture of He-4 and He-3 by Andreev and Bashkin. It is shown here (using a relativistic approach) that each constituent will provide a contribution proportional to the product of the corresponding momentum circulation integral with the associated asymptotic current density.

X-ray Surveys of the obscured Universe

Abstract:Deep X-ray surveys have shown that the cosmic X-ray background (XRB) is largely due to accretion onto supermassive black holes, integrated over cosmic time. However, the characteristic hard spectrum of the XRB can only be explained if most AGN spectra are heavily absorbed. The absorbed AGN will suffer severe extinction and therefore, unlike classical QSOs, will not be prominent at optical wavelengths. Most of the accretion power is being absorbed by gas and dust and will have to be reradiated in the FIR/sub-mm band. AGN could therefore contribute a substantial fraction to the recently discovered cosmic FIR/sub-mm background. Here it is shown that a number of high-redshift absorbed X-ray sources selected in the ROSAT Deep Survey of the Lockman Hole have broad-band spectral energy distributions very similar to the local ULIRG NGC6240, lending additional support to the background models for the obscured universe.

Abstract:This paper was written as part of a book entitled: "Questions of Modern Cosmology - Galileo's Legacy" which is a celebrative book dedicated to Galileo Galilei. The book is published in 2009, the International Year of Astronomy, since it is intended to be a modern tribute to the astronomer who, 400 years ago, first pointed a telescope towards the night sky. The book is written in the form of interviews between the editors and many physicists, astrophysicists and cosmologists from all over the world. The editors engaged in several discussions on the formation and evolution of the Universe with the aim of summarizing the most important and significative advances made by cosmology over the past century and at the beginning of the new millennium. This paper deals with X-ray clusters of galaxies and how they can be used to constrain fundamental cosmological parameters.

Abstract:One of the most outstanding results of the Chandra X-ray Observatory was the discovery that AGN jets are bright X-ray emitters on very large scales, up to hundreds of kpc. Of these, the powerful and beamed jets of Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars are particularly interesting, as the X-ray emission cannot be explained by an extrapolation of the lower frequency synchrotron spectrum. Instead, the most common model invokes inverse Compton scattering of photons of the Cosmic Microwave Background (EC/CMB) as the mechanism responsible for the high energy emission. The EC/CMB model has recently come under criticism, particularly because it should predict a significant steady flux in the MeV-GeV band which has not been detected by the Fermi/LAT telescope for two of the best studied jets (PKS 0637-752 and 3C273). In this work we revisit some aspects of the EC/CMB model and show that electron cooling plays an important part in shaping the spectrum. This can solve the overproduction of gamma-rays by suppressing the high energy end of the emitting particle population. Furthermore, we show that cooling in the EC/CMB model predicts a new class of extended jets that are bright in X-rays but silent in the radio and optical bands. These jets are more likely to lie at intermediate redshifts, and would have been missed in all previous X-ray surveys due to selection effects.

Abstract:I present an overview of some of the recent advances in our understanding of the distribution and evolution of the ordinary, baryonic matter in the universe. Two observations that strongly suggest that most of the baryons seen at high redshift ($z\ge 2$) have turned into some forms yet undetected at $z=0$ are highlighted. With the aid of large-scale cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, it is shown that most of the baryons today are in a gaseous form with a temperature of $10^5-10^7~$Kelvin -- the "warm/hot gas", shock heated during the gravitational collapse and formation of the large-scale structure at low redshift. Primarily line emissions from this warm/hot gas may account for a large fraction of the residual (after removal of identifiable discrete sources) soft X-ray background at $h\nu < 1.0$keV. How this warm/hot gas may be detected by the next generation of EUV and soft X-ray instruments is indicated. Detection or non-detection of this warm/hot gas will have profound implications for cosmology.

Abstract:In the recent years, the discovery of a new class of Galactic transients with fast and bright flaring X-ray activity, the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients, has completely changed our view and comprehension of massive X-ray binaries. These objects display X-ray outbursts which are difficult to be explained in the framework of standard theories for the accretion of matter onto compact objects, and could represent a dominant population of X-ray binaries. I will review their main observational properties (neutron star magnetic field, orbital and spin period, long term behavior, duty cycle, quiescence and outburst emission), which pose serious problems to the main mechanisms recently proposed to explain their X-ray behavior. I will discuss both present results and future perspectives with the next generation of X-ray telescopes.

Abstract:This Cool Stars 16 splinter session was devoted to reviewing our current knowledge of correlated X-ray and radio emission from cool stars in order to prepare for new large radio observatories such as the EVLA. A key interest was to discuss why the X-ray and radio luminosities of some cool stars are in clear breach of a correlation that holds for other active stars, the so-called G\"udel-Benz relation. Properties of the diffuse X-ray background in a high-resolution hydrodynamical simulation

Abstract:We study the properties of the diffuse X-ray background by using the results of a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation of the concordance LambdaCDM model. The simulation follows gravitational and gas dynamics and includes a treatment of physical processes like radiative cooling, star formation and supernova feedback. From the simulation outputs, we produce a set of two-dimensional maps of the intergalactic medium X-ray emission integrated over redshift. We find that the signal in the soft (0.5-2 keV) band is lognormally distributed with a mean intensity of about 4 10^-12 erg s^-1 cm^-2 deg^-2; approximately 40 per cent of the emission originates from warm-hot gas (defined as baryons with 10^5<T<10^7 K), and 90 per cent comes from structures at z<0.9. Since the spectrum is soft, being mostly provided by the intergalactic medium at low temperature, the total mean intensity in the hard (2-10 keV) X-ray band is smaller by a factor of about 4. In order to constrain the physical processes included in our simulation, we compare our results with the observed upper limit (1.2 +/- 0.3) 10^-12 erg s^-1 cm^-2 deg^-2 of the soft X-ray emission due to diffuse gas. To this purpose, we remove the contributions of observable extended objects (groups and clusters of galaxies) from the simulated maps by adopting different detectability criteria which are calibrated on the properties of systems at intermediate redshifts observed by Chandra. We show that the simulated diffuse soft X-ray emission is consistent with the present observed upper limit. However, if future measurements will decrease the level of the unresolved X-ray background by a factor of two, a more efficient feedback mechanism should be required to suppress the soft emission of the gas residing within filaments and group-size haloes.
