Abstract:I will review the constraints set by X-ray measurements of afterglows on several issues of GRB, with particular regard to the fireball model, the environment, the progenitor and dark GRB.

Abstract:Gamma-Ray Bursts(GRBs) are short and intense flashes of gamma-rays observed from the sky in random directions.Although discovered as early as in 1967 by Vela satellite,GRBs were confirmed to be of cosmological origin through the observation of their afterglows and host galaxies till 1997.In this article,the recent progresses in observations and theories,especially in the Swift and Fermi eras,are briefly reviewed.The standard fireball model is described first.A detailed description on the origin of afterglows,i.e., synchrotron radiation of relativistic electrons which are accelerated by the shocks from the interaction between the relativistic outflows and surrounding medium,is then presented. The micro physics of shocks and the nonthermal radiation mechanisms is also addressed in detail.In Section 3,the progenitors of different kinds of GRBs are introduced.Finally,a short prospect is given.

Abstract:The standard fireball shock model is successful at explaining the overall features of afterglows of some bursts, but it cannot fit the observed data quantificationally. Some post-standard effects (i.g., environment, energy injection, and high-energy radiation) have been studied to fit well the observed data. This paper reviews these important effects and cosmological use of GRBs.

Abstract:The afterglow of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) is commonly thought to be the result of continuous deceleration of a relativistically expanding fireball in the surrounding medium. Assuming that the expansion of the fireball is adiabatic and that the density of the medium is a power-law function of shock radius, i.e. n(ext) proportional to R-k, we study the effects of the first-order radiative correction and the non-uniformity of the medium on a GRB afterglow analytically. We first derive a new relation among the observed time, the shock radius and the Lorentz factor of the fireball: t(+) = R/4(4 - k)gamma(2)c, and also derive a new relation among the comoving time, the shock radius and the Lorentz factor of the fireball: t(co) = 2R/(5 - k)gamma c. We next study the evolution of the fireball by using the analytic solution of Blandford & McKee. The radiation losses may not significantly influence this evolution. We further derive new scaling laws both between the X-ray flux and observed time and between the optical flux and observed time. We use these scaling laws to discuss the afterglows of GRB 970228 and GRB 970616, and find that if the spectral index of the electron distribution is p = 2.5, implied from the spectra of GRBs, the X-ray afterglow of GRB 970616 is well fitted by assuming k = 2.

Abstract:The post-burst evolution of fireballs that produce gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is studied, assuming the expansion of fireballs to be adiabatic and relativistic. Numerical results as well as an approximate analytic solution for the evolution are presented. Owing to the adoption of a new relation between t, R and gamma, our results differ markedly from previous studies. Synchrotron radiation from the shocked interstellar medium is carefully calculated, using a conventional set of equations, The observed X-ray flux of GRB afterglows can be reproduced easily. Although the optical afterglows seem much more complicated, our results can still present a rather satisfactory agreement with observations. We also find that the expansion will no longer be highly relativistic about 4 d after the main GRB. We thus suggest that the marginally relativistic phase of the expansion should be investigated so as to check the afterglows observed a week or more later.

Abstract:Short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs; <= 2 s) have remained a mystery due to the lack of afterglow detection until recently. The models to interpret short GRBs invoke distinct progenitor scenarios. Here we present a generic analysis of short GRB afterglows and calculate the optical light curves of short GRBs within the framework of different progenitor models. We show that all these optical afterglows are bright enough to be detected by the Ultraviolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) on board the Swift observatory and that different models could be distinguished with a well-monitored light curve. We also model the afterglow data of the recently discovered short burst GRB 040924. We find that the limited data are consistent with a low medium density environment, which is consistent with the preconcept of the compact star merger progenitor model, although the models with a collapsar progenitor are not ruled out.

Abstract:Short duration (<= 2 s) Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been a mystery since their discovery. Until May 2005 very little was known about short GRBs, but this situation has changed rapidly in the last few months since the Swift and HETE-2 satellites have made it possible to discover X-ray and optical counterparts to these sources. Positional associations indicate that short GRBs arise in close-by galaxies (z < 0.7). Here we report on a detailed study of the short GRB 050724 X-ray afterglow. This burst shows strong flaring variability in the X-ray band. It clearly confirms early suggestions of X-ray activity in the 50-100 s time interval following the GRB onset seen with BATSE. Late flare activity is also observed. These observations support the idea that flares are related to the inner engine for short GRBs, as well as long GRBs.

Abstract:Absorption and reprocessing of gamma-ray burst radiation in the environment of cosmological gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can be used as a powerful probe of the elusive nature of their progenitors. In particular, transient X-ray emission line and absorption features in the prompt and early afterglows of GRBs are sensitive to details of the location and density structure of the reprocessing and/or absorbing material. To date, there have been only rather few detections of such features, and the significance is marginal in most individual cases. However, transient X-ray emission lines in GRB afterglows have now been found by four different X-ray satellites, which may justify a more detailed theoretical investigation of their origin. In this paper, I will first present a brief review of the status of observations of transient X-ray emission line and absorption features. I will then discuss general physics constraints which those results impose on isotropy, homogeneity, and location of the reprocessing material with respect to the GRB source, and review the various currently discussed, specific models of GRBs and their environments in which the required conditions could arise.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the theorem of Ein-Lazarsfeld-Smith (concerning the behavior of symbolic powers of prime ideals in regular rings finitely generated over a field of characteristic 0) to arbitrary regular rings containing a field. The basic theorem states that in such rings, if P is a prime ideal of height c, then for all n, the symbolic (cn)th power of P is contained in the nth power of P. Results are also given in the non-regular case: one must correct by a power of the Jacobian ideal in rings where the Jacobian ideal is defined.

After a short history of optical transient search and the BeppoSAX discoveries, the main topics included are prompt multiwavelength emission, dark bursts, spectral lines line and continuum variability, the early light curve behaviour, jet breaks, X-ray flares, late afterglow features, polarization, and orphan afterglows.

Abstract:We prove that both the canonical and single power-law decay X-ray afterglow lightcurves of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed with the Swift X-ray telescope may be an emission component radiated by external shocks prior to the GRB trigger. Our systematical analysis on both the early optical and X-ray afterglow data also indicates that they might be from different components. The detected optical emission possibly is dominated by the afterglow of the GRB fireball. The X-ray afterglows may be detected for some GRBs, but most of the detected X-rays for most GRBs are likely dominated by the prior X-ray component. With the deceleration feature in the early optical afterglow data, we estimate the initial Lorentz factors of the GRBs and discover a tight relation of the Lorentz factor to the isotropic gamma-ray energy.
A unifying view of Gamma Ray Burst Afterglows

Abstract:We selected a sample of 33 Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected by Swift, with known redshift and optical extinction at the host frame. For these, we constructed the de-absorbed and K-corrected X-ray and optical rest frame light curves. These are modelled as the sum of two components: emission from the forward shock due to the interaction of a fireball with the circum-burst medium and an additional component, treated in a completely phenomenological way. The latter can be identified, among other possibilities, as "late prompt" emission produced by a long lived central engine with mechanisms similar to those responsible for the production of the "standard" early prompt radiation. Apart from flares or re-brightenings, that we do not model, we find a good agreement with the data, despite of their complexity and diversity. Although based in part on a phenomenological model with a relatively large number of free parameters, we believe that our findings are a first step towards the construction of a more physical scenario. Our approach allows us to interpret the behaviour of the optical and X-ray afterglows in a coherent way, by a relatively simple scenario. Within this context it is possible to explain why sometimes no jet break is observed; why, even if a jet break is observed, it is often chromatic; why the steepening after the jet break time is often shallower than predicted. Finally, the decay slope of the late prompt emission after the shallow phase is found to be remarkably similar to the time profile expected by the accretion rate of fall-back material (i.e. proportional to t^{-5/3}), suggesting that this can be the reason why the central engine can be active for a long time.

Abstract:Extended, fading emissions in multi-wavelength are observed following Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Recent broad-band observational campaigns led by the Swift Observatory reveal rich features of these GRB afterglows. Here we review the latest observational progress and discuss the theoretical implications for understanding the central engine, composition, and geometric configuration of GRB jets, as well as their interactions with the ambient medium.

Abstract:Taking into account the effect of synchrotron self-absorption, the radiation spectra and flux of gamma-ray burst afterglow are discussed. And this paper presents GRB970508 afterglow light curve in optical R band. Although the optical afterglows seem much more complicated, its results can still present a rather satisfactory agreement with observation. In the end it suggest that synchrotron self- absorption and inner engine mechanism should be comprehensively studied either in fireball+shock model or in jet model in order to make theoretical calculation fit the observed light curve completely well.

Abstract:Recently, BeppoSAX and ASCA have reported an unusual resurgence of soft X-ray emission during the afterglows of GRB 970508 and GRB 970828, together with marginal evidence for the existence of Fe-lines in both objects. We consider the implications of the existence of a torus of iron-rich material surrounding the sites of gamma ray bursts as would be expected in the SupraNova model; in particular, we show that the fireball will quickly hit this torus, and bring it to a temperature ~3x10^7 K. Bremsstrahlung emission from the heated up torus will cause a resurgence of the soft X-ray emission with all expected characteristics (flux level, duration and spectral hardening with time) identical to those observed during the reburst. Also, thermal emission from the torus will account for the observed iron line flux. These events are also observable, for instance by new missions such as SWIFT, when beaming away from our line sight makes us miss the main burst, as Fast (soft) X-ray Transients, with durations ~10^3 s, and fluences ~10^-7-10^-4 erg cm^-2. This model provides evidence in favor of the SupraNova model for Gamma Ray Bursts.

Abstract:We present observations of the early X-ray emission for a sample of 40 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) obtained using the Swift satellite for which the narrow-field instruments were pointed at the burst within 10 minutes of the trigger. Using data from the Burst Alert and X-Ray Telescopes, we show that the X-ray light curve can be well described by an exponential that relaxes into a power law, often with flares superimposed. The transition time between the exponential and the power law provides a physically defined timescale for the burst duration. In most bursts the power law breaks to a shallower decay within the first hour, and a late emission "hump" is observed which can last for many hours. In other GRBs the hump is weak or absent. The observed variety in the shape of the early X-ray light curve can be explained as a combination of three components: prompt emission from the central engine; afterglow; and the late hump. In this scenario, afterglow emission begins during or soon after the burst and the observed shape of the X-ray light curve depends on the relative strengths of the emission due to the central engine and that of the afterglow. There is a strong correlation such that those GRBs with stronger afterglow components have brighter early optical emission. The late emission hump can have a total fluence equivalent to that of the prompt phase. GRBs with the strongest late humps have weak or no X-ray flares.

Abstract:We study an extensive sample of 87 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) for which there are well-sampled and simultaneous optical and X-ray light curves. We extract the cleanest possible signal of the afterglow component. and compare the temporal behaviors of the X-ray light. curve, observed by Swift XRT, and optical data, observed by UVOT and ground-based telescopes for each individual burst. Overall we find that 62% of the GRBs. are consistent with the standard afterglow model. When more advanced modeling is invoked, up to 91% of the bursts in our sample may be consistent with the external-shock model. A large fraction of these bursts are consistent with occurring in a constant interstellar density medium (61%) while only 39% of them occur in a wind-like medium. Only nine cases have afterglow light curves that exactly match the standard fireball model prediction, having a single power-law decay in both energy bands that are observed during their entire duration. In particular, for the bursts with chromatic behavior, additional model assumptions must be made over limited segments of the light curves in order for these bursts to fully agree with the external-shock model. Interestingly, for 54% of the X-ray and 40% of the optical band observations, the end of the shallow decay (t(similar to-0.5)) period coincides with the jet-break (t(similar to-p)) time, causing an abrupt change in decay slope. The fraction of the burst that is consistent with the external-shock model is independent of the observational epochs in the rest frame of GRBs. Moreover, no cases can be explained by the cooling frequency crossing the X-ray or optical band.
Modeling the Radio and Optical/nir Afterglows of GRB 980703: a Numerical Study

Abstract:Extensive multi-band afterglow data are available for GRB 980703. Especially, its radio afterglow was very bright and was monitored until more than 1000 days after the trigger time. Additionally, there is no obvious special feature, i.e., no rebrightenings, no plateau, and no special steep decay or slow decay in the multi-band afterglow light curves. All these conditions make GRB 980703 a precious sample in gamma-ray burst research. Here we use the observational data of GRB 980703 to test the standard fireball model in depth. It is found that the model can give a satisfactory explanation to the multi-band and overall afterglow light curves. The beaming angle of GRB 980703 is derived as ∼ 0.23 radian, and the circum-burst medium density is ∼ 27 cm−3. The total isotropic equivalent kinetic energy of the ejecta is ∼ 3.8 × 1052 ergs. A rest-frame extinction of A V ∼ 2.5 mag in the host galaxy is also derived.

In this article I discuss the how spectra and photometry can be used to constrain fireball parameters, describe several types of breaks that might be observed in the optical decay, and briefly review the late-time bumps and rapid variations in optical light curves.

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are fascinating sources studied in modern astronomy. They are extremely luminous electromagnetic explosions in the Universe observed from cosmological distances. These unique characteristics provide a marvellous chance to study the evolution of massive stars and probe the rarely explored early Universe. In addition, the central source's compactness and the high bulk Lorentz factor in GRB's ultra-relativistic jets make them efficient laboratories for studying high-energy astrophysics. GRBs are the only astrophysical sources observed in two distinct signals: gravitational and electromagnetic waves. GRBs are believed to be produced from a "fireball" moving at a relativistic speed, launched by a fast-rotating black hole or magnetar. GRBs emit radiation in two phases: the initial gamma/hard X-rays prompt emission, the duration of which ranges from a few seconds to hours, followed by the multi-wavelength and long-lived afterglow phase. Based on the observed time frame of GRB prompt emission, astronomers have generally categorized GRBs into two groups: long (> 2 s) and short (< 2 s) bursts. Despite the discovery of GRBs in the late 1960s, their origin is still a great mystery. There are several open questions related to GRBs, such as: What powers the GRBs jets/central engine? What are the possible progenitors? What is the jet composition? What is the underlying emission process that gives rise to observed radiation? Where and how does the energy dissipation occur in the outflow? How to solve the radiative efficiency problem? What are the possible causes of Dark GRBs and orphan afterglows? How to investigate the local environment of GRBs? etc. In this thesis, we explored some of these open enigmas (progenitor, emission mechanisms, jet composition and environment) using multi-wavelength observations obtained using space and ground-based facilities.

Abstract:Typical γ-ray burst (GRB) spectra are characterized by a spectral break Ep, which for bright BATSE bursts is found to be narrowly clustered around 300 keV. Recently identified X-ray flashes, which may account for a significant portion of the whole GRB population, seem to extend the Ep distribution to a broader range below 40 keV. Positive correlations among Ep and some other observed parameters have been noticed. On the other hand, within the cosmological fireball model, the issues concerning the dominant energy ingredient of the fireball as well as the location of the GRB emission site are still unsettled, leading to several variants of the fireball model. Here we analyze these models within a unified framework and critically reexamine the Ep predictions in the various model variants. Attention is focused on the predictions of the narrowness of the Ep distribution in different models and the correlations among Ep and other measurable observables. These model properties can be tested against the current and upcoming GRB data, through which the nature of the fireball as well as the mechanism and site of the GRB emission will be identified. In view of the current data, various models are appraised through a simple Monte Carlo simulation, and a tentative discussion about the possible nature of X-ray flashes is presented.
