Abstract:Taking the generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator (GTHO) and singular time-dependent harmonic oscillator (STHO) as illustrative examples, we discuss the connection between the quantum basic invariants and classical Noether's theorem and, for the system, find: (1) The classical basic invariants and general form of classical invariants. (2) The current algebra and corresponding operator algebra. (3) A kind of converse of the Noether's theorem. (4) The connection between the so-called symmetry algebra ({G(k)} algebra) and the classical current algebra through the operator algebra.

Abstract:A model interaction between a two-state quantum system and a classical switching device is analysed and shown to lead to the quantum Zeno effect for large values of the coupling constant k . A minimal piecewise deterministic random process compatible with the Liouville equation is described, and it is shown that 1/k can be interpreted as the jump frequency of the classical device

Abstract:We consider a simple string model to explain and partly demystify the phenomenon of quantum entanglement. The model in question has nothing to do with string theory: it uses macroscopic strings that can be acted upon by Alice and Bob in ways that violate, or fail to violate, in different ways Bell-CHSH inequalities and the no-signaling conditions, also called marginal laws. We present several variants of the model, to address different objections that may arise. This allows us to make fully visible what the quantum formalism already suggests, about the nature of the correlations associated with entangled states, which appear to be created in a contextual manner at each execution of a joint measurement. We also briefly present the hidden measurement interpretation, whose rationale is compatible with the mechanism suggested by our string model, then offer some final thoughts about the possibility that the quantum entanglement phenomenon might affect not only states, but also measurements, and that our physical reality would be predominantly non-spatial in nature.

Abstract:We study a quantum oscillator interacting and back-reacting on a classical oscillator. This can be done consistently provided the quantum system decoheres, while the backreaction has a stochastic component which causes the classical system to undergo diffusion. Nonetheless the state of the quantum oscillator can remain pure conditioned on the trajectory of the classical oscillator. We solve the system using the classical-quantum path integral formulation, and investigate slow moving regimes of either the classical or quantum oscillator. Lastly, we study the correlators of this classicalquantum setup. We are able to identify the free correlators of the theory and compute the full partition function perturbatively up to second order. This serves as a toy model for a number of other systems in which one system can be treated as effectively classical, such as a scalar quantum field interacting with another field undergoing decoherence, or a system emitting radiation, one of which is treated classically.

Quantum Integrable Systems on a Classical Integrable Background

Abstract:In this paper, we develop the framework for quantum integrable systems on an integrable classical background. We call them hybrid quantum integrable systems (hybrid integrable systems), and we show that they occur naturally in the semiclassical limit of quantum integrable systems. We start with an outline of the concept of hybrid dynamical systems. Then we give several examples of hybrid integrable systems. The first series of examples is a class of hybrid integrable systems that appear in the semiclassical limit of quantum spin chains. Then we look at the semiclassical limit of the quantum spin Calogero--Moser system. The result is a hybrid integrable system driven by usual classical Calogero--Moser (CM) dynamics. This system at the fixed point of the multi-time classical dynamics CM system gives commuting spin Hamiltonians of Haldane--Shastry model.

Abstract:We propose in this work a concept of integrability for quantum systems, which corresponds to the concept of noncommutative integrability for systems in classical mechanics. We determine a condition for quantum operators which can be a suitable replacement for the condition of functional independence for functions on the classical phase space. This condition is based on the properties of the main parts of the operators with respect to the momenta. We are led in this way to the definition of what we call a "quasi-integrable quantum system". This concept will be further developed in a series of following papers.

Abstract:We study continuous variable systems, in which quantum and classical degrees of freedom are combined and treated on the same footing. Thus all systems, including the inputs or outputs to a channel, may be quantum-classical hybrids. This allows a unified treatment of a large variety of quantum operations involving measurements or dependence on classical parameters. The basic variables are given by canonical operators with scalar commutators. Some variables may commute with all others and hence generate a classical subsystem. We systematically study the class of "quasifree" operations, which are characterized equivalently either by an intertwining condition for phase-space translations or by the requirement that, in the Heisenberg picture, Weyl operators are mapped to multiples of Weyl operators. This includes the well-known Gaussian operations, evolutions with quadratic Hamiltonians, and "linear Bosonic channels", but allows for much more general kinds of noise. For example, all states are quasifree. We sketch the analysis of quasifree preparation, measurement, repeated observation, cloning, teleportation, dense coding, the setup for the classical limit, and some aspects of irreversible dynamics, together with the precise salient tradeoffs of uncertainty, error, and disturbance. Although the spaces of observables and states are infinite dimensional for every non-trivial system that we consider, we treat the technicalities related to this in a uniform and conclusive way, providing a calculus that is both easy to use and fully rigorous.

Abstract:This work will incorporate a few related tools for addressing the conceptual difficulties arising from sewing together classical and quantum mechanics: deterministic operators, weak measurements and post-selection. Weak Measurement, based on a very weak von Neumann coupling, is a unique kind of quantum measurement with numerous theoretical and practical applications. In contrast to other measurement techniques, it allows to gather a small amount of information regarding the quantum system, with only a negligible probability of collapsing it. A single weak measurement yields an almost random outcome, but when performed repeatedly over a large ensemble, the averaged outcome becomes increasingly robust and accurate. Importantly, a long sequence of weak measurements can be thought of as a single projective measurement. I claim in this work that classical variables appearing in the macro-world, such as centre of mass, moment of inertia, pressure and average forces, result from a multitude of quantum weak measurements performed in the micro-world. Here again, the quantum outcomes are highly uncertain, but the law of large numbers obliges their convergence to the definite quantities we know from our everyday lives. By augmenting this description with a final boundary condition and employing the notion of "classical robustness under time-reversal" I will draw a quantitative borderline between the classical and quantum regimes. I will conclude by analyzing the role of macroscopic systems in amplifying and recording quantum outcomes.

The system with discrete interactions I: Some comments about the principles of quantum theory

Abstract:The model of the physical system with discrete interactions is based on the postulates that (i) parameters of the physical system are defined in process of its interaction; (ii) the process of interaction is discrete. Consequently ordering of the events in the system is not automatically implied based on the values of time, but must be specified explicitly. This suggests the specific logic of events as well as complex character of the function, which describes stochastic behavior of the system, hence the parameters of the system are defined by Hermitian operators in the Hilbert space of functions. The model gives an essential way to introduce the basic notions and obtain the results of the quantum theory, to derive the meaning of the main physical parameters, such as momentum or electric charge. Based on the proposed postulates, Schrodinger equation for the particle is deduced in a way similar to inferring of Smoluchowski equation in the classical statistical mechanics. Similarly, the equations of motion of linear fields are established by considering Smoluchowski-type equations for amplitudes of harmonics. The concept of discrete interaction gives a way to de-couple the object of experiment and a testing device (the traditional source of controversy in quantum theory), though at expense of limitation of the principle of locality.

Abstract:A bstract We study some general properties of coupled quantum systems. We consider simple interactions between two copies of identical Hamiltonians such as the SYK model, Pauli spin chains with random magnetic field and harmonic oscillators. Such couplings make the ground states close to the thermofield double states of the uncoupled Hamiltonians. For the coupled SYK model, we push the numerical computation further towards the thermodynamic limit so that an extrapolation in the size of the system is possible. We find good agreement between the extrapolated numerical result and the analytic result in the large- q limit. We also consider the coupled gauged matrix model and vector model, and argue that the deconfinement is associated with the loss of the entanglement, similarly to the previous observation for the coupled SYK model. The understanding of the microscopic mechanism of the confinement/deconfinement transition enables us to estimate the quantum entanglement precisely, and backs up the dual gravity interpretation which relates the deconfinement to the disappearance of the wormhole. Our results demonstrate the importance of the entanglement between the color degrees of freedom in the emergence of the bulk geometry from quantum field theory via holography.

Abstract:In physics, one is often misled in thinking that the mathematical model of a system is part of or is that system itself. Think of expressions commonly used in physics like "point" particle, motion "on the line", "smooth" observables, wave function, and even "going to infinity", without forgetting perplexing phrases like "classical world" versus "quantum world".... On the other hand, when a mathematical model becomes really inoperative with regard to correct predictions, one is forced to replace it with a new one. It is precisely what happened with the emergence of quantum physics. Classical models were (progressively) superseded by quantum ones through quantization prescriptions. These procedures appear often as ad hoc recipes. In the present paper, well defined quantizations, based on integral calculus and Weyl-Heisenberg symmetry, are described in simple terms through one of the most basic examples of mechanics. Starting from (quasi-) probability distribution(s) on the Euclidean plane viewed as the phase space for the motion of a point particle on the line, i.e., its classical model, we will show how to build corresponding quantum model(s) and associated probabilities (e.g. Husimi) or quasi-probabilities (e.g. Wigner) distributions. We highlight the regularizing role of such procedures with the familiar example of the motion of a particle with a variable mass and submitted to a step potential.

Abstract:Frauchiger and Renner recently cast doubt on the universal applicability of Quantum Mechanics [1]. In the following, it is pointed out that their conclusion of one of three common-sense conditions, demanded for Quantum Mechanics, being inevitably and permanently violated is not inevitable; there is a way out. Here, it is argued for fully accepting encompassing complementarity and for a basic conceptualization of quantum mechanics, in which different aspects are exhibited under different circumstances. The reported result is taken as an indication of a fundamental arrow of time pointing in the direction from the quantum --> classical domain. With the origin of thermodynamic time at that interface, its unrestricted applicability in isolated quantum systems is questioned. The bold proposal is that TIME as we know it just does not exist at the quantum level. Time instead commences together with causality at all interfaces to the classic domain whenever a minimum amount of energy is transferred in an uncontrolled manner, i.e., without well-balanced compensation. Insisting on fully comprehensive self-consistency opens new perspectives on (retro-)causality and also on an inflation phase at the beginnings of our universe.

Abstract:In plethora of physical situations one can distinguish a mediator -- a system that couples other, non-interacting systems. Often the mediator itself is not directly accessible to experimentation, yet it is interesting and sometimes crucial to understand if it admits non-classical properties. An example of this sort that recently enjoys considerable attention are two quantum masses coupled via gravitational field. It has been argued that the gain of quantum entanglement between the masses indicates non-classicality of the states of the whole tripartite system. Here, we focus on non-classical properties of the involved interactions rather than the states. We derive inequalities whose violation indicates non-commutativity and non-decomposability (open system generalisation of non-commuting unitaries) of interactions through the mediators. The derivations are based on properties of general quantum formalism and make minimalistic assumptions about the studied systems, in particular the interactions can remain uncharacterised throughout the assessment. Furthermore, we also present conditions that solely use correlations between the coupled systems, excluding the need to measure the mediator. Next, we show that the amount of violation places a lower bound on suitably defined degree of non-decomposability. This makes the methods quantitative and at the same time experiment ready. We give applications of these techniques in two different fields: for detecting non-classicality of gravitational interaction and in bounding the Trotter error in quantum simulations.

Abstract:We suggest a somewhat non-standard view on a set of curious, paradoxical from the standpoint of simple classical physics and everyday experience phenomena. There are the quantisation (discrete set of values) of the observables (e.g., energy, momentum, angular momentum); forbidden simultaneous measurements of the observables in the most cases (e.g., of a coordinate and momentum, of angular momentum projections on difference axis); counter-intuitive relations on the simultaneously measurable quantities (e.g., the famous expression for the square momentum $l(l+1)$ with the maximal projection $l$). These and other paradoxes are traditionally related to "purely quantum" phenomenon, i.e., having no analogue in the "classical world" ones. However, there are deep analogies between classical and "quantum" worlds, as soon as the quantum technique is applied to the classical phenomenon. We follow these analogies with the examples of relatively simple and well known models of classical physics, such as a simplified model of light transition through the media, a system of electric charges close to each other and far from the observer; the specific of motion in the Coulomb/Newtonian field. This text can be considered as a mini-course addressed to higher school and undergraduate students who are interested in basics of quantum mechanics, but are not yet ready for systematic study of standard courses. The text may be also useful to those who supervise such students.

Abstract:A simple exactly solvable model is given of the dynamical coupling between a person's classically described perceptions and that person's quantum mechanically described brain. The model is based jointly upon von Neumann's theory of measurement and the empirical findings of close connections between conscious intentions and synchronous oscillations in well separated parts of the brain. A quantum-Zeno-effect-based mechanism is described that allows conscious intentions to influence brain activity in a functionally appropriate way. The robustness of this mechanism in the face of environmental decoherence effects is emphasized.

Abstract:The article explores challenges presented by revelations in physics and the questions they provoke concerning reality. It sheds light on the disparity between the indefinite nature of quantum reality and our perception of classical reality. The necessity for transition from the quantum to classical reality is underscored, alongside difficulties of observer intervention and the complexities introduced by the objective collapse theory. The work introduces a pioneering approach of decoherence within the framework of universal wave function density matrices. It deploys entanglement among three primary quantum subsystems: mass particles, massless particles, and the human body system. This gives rise to a Von Neumann chain of correlated systems, wherein neglecting one system renders the other two in mixed states. Here the cohered massless system and the animate being constitute subjects of our perceptions. Within the body, the distributions of quantum particle wave packets are highly localized due to entanglement and chemical potential, satisfying the Ehrenfest condition, wherein the thermal deBroglie wavelength scale is considerably smaller than their domain in the body. Thus, each microstate of the body quantum particle ensemble can be analogously represented as a statistical mechanics particle ensemble or likened to microstates in the Debye statistical model. In the statistical mechanics perspective, life represents a macrostate characterized by thermodynamics parameters, and chemical potential. The life macrostate autonomously processes an environment corresponding to a mixed state alternative of its entangled quantum world counterpart, which appears in the stream of consciousness. The quantum universe persists, evolving deterministically, and the classical (macroscopic) universe is its realization statistical by the fundamental predicate of life discerned by the brain; our elusive world.
