Abstract:A gravitational gauge theory with a spin–affine connection (Lorentz connection) as a rotational gauge potential (fundamental dynamical variable) is suggested for reformulating the theory of Stephenson–Kilmister–Yang gravity, in which the Einstein field equation of gravity is a first-integral solution of a spin-connection gravitational gauge field equation. A heavy intermediate field $\phi $ that accompanies a matter field $\varphi $ is introduced in order to remove the conventional dimensionful gravitational coupling. Such a $\varphi $–$\phi $ coupling can lead to dimensionless gravitational coupling (i.e., the gravitational constant is dimensionless) in the present gravitational gauge field theory. A low-energy effective Lagrangian density for the matter field can be obtained by integrating out the accompanying heavy field in generating functional of path integral formalism, and therefore, a dimensionful gravitational coupling coefficient (Einstein gravitational constant) emerges. Such a dimensionless coupling of gravity, where the dimensionful coupling is emergent at low energies, is considered for scalar and spinor fields, which serve as gravitating matter fields (gravitational source). Though there are higher derivatives (e.g., third- and fourth-order partial derivatives) of the scalar and spinor fields in the low-energy effective Lagrangian densities, the ordinary equations of motion of the scalar and spinor fields can also be emergent from the present gravitational gauge theory. Therefore, the Einstein gravity can be recovered from the present gravitational gauge theory. In addition to the gravitational Lagrangian of the spacetime-rotational gauge potential (i.e., spin–affine connection), the Lagrangian of a spacetime-translational gauge potential (i.e., vierbein) is also constructed. Thus, the present dimensionless gravitational gauge coupling preserves local rotational and translational gauge symmetries. Since the spin-connection gravitational gauge field equation is a third-order differential equation of metric (the Einstein field equation of gravity is a first-integral solution), it could provide a new route to the vacuum energy cosmological constant problem.

Abstract:We show that various dynamical gauge theories in two, three and four dimensions, which are obtained as Manin deformations of topological Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz-Zaboronsky theories, are equivalent to gravitational theories. Since gravity is topological in two and three dimension, this equivalence requires a diffeomorphism breaking background source term. In four dimensions, however, the MacDowell-Mansouri formulation of Einstein gravity with a cosmological constant is obtained identically via the Manin deformation of a particular Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz-Zaboronsky theory.

Abstract:We develop a Lagrangian quantization formalism for a class of theories obtained by the restriction of the configuration space of gauge fields from a wider (parental) gauge theory. This formalism is based on application of the Batalin-Vilkovisky technique for quantization of theories with linearly dependent generators, their linear dependence originating from a special type of projection from the originally irreducible gauge generators of the parental theory. The algebra of these projected generators is shown to be closed for parental gauge algebras closed off shell. We demonstrate that new physics of the restricted theory, as compared to its parental theory, is associated with the rank deficiency of a special gauge-restriction operator reflecting the gauge transformations of the restriction constraints functions -- this distinguishes the restricted theory from its partial gauge fixing. As a byproduct of this technique a workable algorithm for the one-loop effective action in generic first-stage reducible theory was constructed, along with the explicit set of tree-level Ward identities for gauge field, ghost, and ghosts-for-ghosts propagators. The formalism is applied to unimodular gravity theory, and its one-loop effective action is obtained in terms of functional determinants of minimal second-order operators, calculable on generic backgrounds by Schwinger-DeWitt technique of local curvature expansion. The result is shown to be equivalent to Einstein gravity theory with a cosmological term up to a special contribution of the global degree of freedom associated with the variable value of the cosmological constant. The role of this degree of freedom in a special duality relation between Einstein theory and unimodular gravity is briefly discussed.

Abstract:The quantization of the gravitational Chern-Simons coefficient is investigated in the framework of $ISO(2,1)$ gauge gravity. Some paradoxes involved are cured. The resolution is largely based on the inequivalence of $ISO(2,1)$ gauge gravity and the metric formulation. Both the Lorentzian scheme and the Euclidean scheme lead to the coefficient quantization, which means that the induced spin is not quite exotic in this context.

Abstract:In this paper, the generic part of the gauge theory of gravity is derived, based merely on the action principle and on the general principle of relativity. We apply the canonical transformation framework to formulate geometrodynamics as a gauge theory. The starting point of our paper is constituted by the general De~Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian of a system of scalar and vector fields, which is supposed to be form-invariant under (global) Lorentz transformations. Following the reasoning of gauge theories, the corresponding locally form-invariant system is worked out by means of canonical transformations. The canonical transformation approach ensures by construction that the form of the action functional is maintained. We thus encounter amended Hamiltonian systems which are form-invariant under arbitrary spacetime transformations. This amended system complies with the general principle of relativity and describes both, the dynamics of the given physical system's fields and their coupling to those quantities which describe the dynamics of the spacetime geometry. In this way, it is unambiguously determined how spin-0 and spin-1 fields couple to the dynamics of spacetime. A term that describes the dynamics of the free gauge fields must finally be added to the amended Hamiltonian, as common to all gauge theories, to allow for a dynamic spacetime geometry. The choice of this "dynamics Hamiltonian" is outside of the scope of gauge theory as presented in this paper. It accounts for the remaining indefiniteness of any gauge theory of gravity and must be chosen "by hand" on the basis of physical reasoning. The final Hamiltonian of the gauge theory of gravity is shown to be at least quadratic in the conjugate momenta of the gauge fields -- this is beyond the Einstein-Hilbert theory of General Relativity.

Abstract:Professor M. C. Polivanov and I met only a few times, during my infrequent visits to the-then Soviet Union in the 1970's and 1980's. His hospitality at the Moscow Steclov Institute made the trips a pleasure, while the scientific environment that he provided made them professionally valuable. But it is the human contact that I remember most vividly and shall now miss after his death. At a time when issues of conscience were both pressing for attention and difficult/dangerous to confront, Professor Polivanov made a deep impression with his quiet but adamant commitment to justice. I can only guess at the satisfaction he must have felt when his goal of gaining freedom for Yuri Orlov was attained, and even more so these days when human rights became defensible in his country; it is regrettable that he cannot now enjoy the future that he strived to attain. One of our joint interests was the Liouville theory,$^{1,\,2}$ which in turn can be viewed as a model for gravity in two-dimensional space-time. Some recent developments in this field are here summarized and dedicated to Polivanov's memory, with the hope that he would have enjoyed knowing about them.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of two dimensional gravity models using ideas motivated by the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity. This leads to a rather natural formulation of a theory that has close links with Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. After introducing the theory and discussing its vacuum solutions, we present the Hamiltonian analysis. This implies the presence of a single dynamical degree of freedom, which is in sharp contrast to General Relativity, where there are no degrees of freedom in two spacetime dimensions. Our approach can be extended to various other lower-dimensional gravity theories and thus could be of wider interest.

Abstract:Dependence on the graviton gauge enters the conventional effective field equations because they fail to account for quantum gravitational correlations with the source which excites the effective field and with the observer who measures it. Including these correlations has been shown to eliminate gauge dependence in flat space background. We generalize the technique to de Sitter background for the case of the 1-loop graviton corrections to the exchange potential of a massless, minimally coupled scalar.

Using the background field method, we utilize a non-singular gauge to compute the anomalous dimension of the cosmological constant at one loop, in a normalization adapted to the spatial curvature term.

The Gauge Theory of Weyl Group and its Interpretation as Weyl Quadratic Gravity

Abstract:In this paper we give an extensive description of Weyl quadratic gravity as the gauge theory of the Weyl group. The previously discovered (vectorial) torsion/non-metricity equivalence is shown to be built-in as it corresponds to a redefinition of the generators of the Weyl group. We present a generalisation of the torsion/non-metricity duality which includes, aside from the vector, also a traceless 3-tensor with two antisymmetric indices and vanishing skew symmetric part. A discussion of this relation in the case of minimally coupled matter fields is given. We further point out that a Rarita-Schwinger field can couple minimally to all the components of torsion and some components of non-metricity. Alongside we present the same gauge construction for the Poincaré and conformal groups. We show that even though the Weyl group is a subgroup of the conformal group, the gauge theory of the latter is actually only a special case of Weyl quadratic gravity.

Abstract:This paper presents relevant modern mathematical formulations for (classical) gauge field theories, namely, ordinary differential geometry, noncommutative geometry, and transitive Lie algebroids. They provide rigorous frameworks to describe Yang-Mills-Higgs theories or gravitation theories, and each of them improves the paradigm of gauge field theories. A brief comparison between them is carried out, essentially due to the various notions of connection. However they reveal a compelling common mathematical pattern on which the paper concludes.

Abstract:We consider the covariant gauge field theory of fractons, which describe a new type of quasiparticles exhibiting novel and nontrivial properties. In particular, we focus on the field theoretical peculiarities which characterize this theory, starting from the fact that, if we accept the paradigm that quantum field theories are defined by their symmetries, fractons unavoidably come together with linearized gravity. The standard Faddeev-Popov procedure to gauge fix the theory leads to a scalar gauge condition, which has two important drawbacks: it is frozen in the Landau gauge and linearized gravity cannot be obtained as a limit. In this paper we adopt a tensorially alternative gauge fixing, which avoids both problems. In particular, this allows to show that important physical features, like the counting of the degrees of freedom, do not depend on a particular gauge choice, as expected. Moreover, the resulting gauge fixed theory contains both fractons and linearized gravity as a limit, differently from the standard scalar choice.

A Note On The Canonical Formalism for Gravity

Abstract:We describe a simple gauge-fixing that leads to a construction of a quantum Hilbert space for quantum gravity in an asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetime, valid to all orders of perturbation theory. The construction is motivated by a relationship of the phase space of gravity in asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetime to a cotangent bundle. We describe what is known about this relationship and some extensions that might plausibly be true. A key fact is that, under certain conditions, the Einstein Hamiltonian constraint equation can be viewed as a way to gauge fix the group of conformal rescalings of the metric of a Cauchy hypersurface. An analog of the procedure that we follow for Anti de Sitter gravity leads to standard results for a Klein-Gordon particle.

Abstract:The relation between four dimensional $SO(4)$ pure Yang-Mills theory and the gravity is discussed. The functional integral for Yang-Mills theory is rewritten in terms of the gravity metric and Riemann tensors. This relation is shown to provide also a simple way to derive the linear potential resulting from the average Wilson loop in the pure Yang-Mills theory.

Abstract:We investigate the Hamiltonian structure of a class of gravitational theories whose actions are linear in the lapse function. We derive the necessary and sufficient condition for a theory in this class to have two or less local physical degrees of freedom. As an application we then find several concrete examples of modified gravity theories in which the total number of local physical degrees of freedom in the gravity sector is two.

Abstract:Whenever the integrand of a gauge-theory loop amplitude can be arranged into a form where the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson duality between color and kinematics is manifest, a corresponding gravity integrand can be obtained simply via the double-copy procedure. However, finding such gauge-theory representations can be challenging, especially at high loop orders. Here, we show that we can, instead, start from generic gauge-theory integrands, where the duality is not manifest, and apply a modified double-copy procedure to obtain gravity integrands that include contact terms generated by violations of dual Jacobi identities. We illustrate this with three-, four- and five-loop examples in N=8 supergravity.

Abstract:Unimodular gravity (UG) is an important theory which may explain the smallness of the cosmological constant. To get insight into the covariant quantization of UG, we discuss the BRST quantization of General Relativity (GR) with a cosmological constant in the unimodular gauge. We develop a novel way to gauge fix the transverse diffeomorphism (TDiff) and then further to fulfill the unimodular gauge. This process requires the introduction of an additional pair of BRST doublets which decouple from the physical sector together with the other three pairs of BRST doublets for the TDiff. We show that the physical spectrum is the same as GR in the usual covariant gauge fixing. We then study a theory derived by making "Fourier transform" of GR in the unimodular gauge with respect to the cosmological constant as a candidate of "quantum UG." We clarify the difference from GR and point out problems in this theory.
