Abstract:Inspired by the similarities between quantum field theory and general relativity, in that each theory encompasses two universal constants and a local symmetry, we set out to construct a non-relativistic theory of quantum mechanics and gravity based upon two assumptions: quantum system remains invariant to local modulus transformation, and physical laws reduce to those of conventional quantum mechanics in small enough region, i.e. a modified version of the equivalence principle. Imposing local modulus symmetry brings a number of changes, including the replacement of the complex conjugate of the wave function by a new scalar function with the same phase but different modulus, and particle momentum operator built on covariant derivative, with a connection of purely imaginary velocity field that is identified as the gravitational escape velocity. Three quantum metric functions are defined to signify the kinematic change of quantum state brought by gravity. The modified equivalence principle enables us to relate the escape velocity field with the quantum metric functions. Equation of motion and field equation that are covariant to local modulus transformation are constructed. New features in these equations offer potential mechanisms to account for the dark energy, the mass discrepancies in the universe, and the quantum state reduction of macroscopic objects.

Anomalous diffusion and factor ordering in (1+1)-dimensional Lorentzian quantum gravity

Abstract:Using properties of diffusion according to a quantum heat kernel constructed as an expectation over classical heat kernels on $S^1$, we probe the non-manifold-like nature of quantized space in a model of (1+1)-dimensional quantum gravity. By computing the mean squared displacement of a diffusing particle, we find that diffusion is anomalous, behaving similarly to that on a porous substrate, network, or fractal over short distances. The walk dimension of the path for a particle diffusing in quantized space is calculated to have an infimum of 4, rising to arbitrarily large values depending on a parameter labeling the choice of factor ordering in the quantum Hamiltonian for our model and figuring in the asymptotic behavior of the wavefunction used to construct the quantum heat kernel. Additionally, we derive an expansion for return probability of a diffusing particle, whose modifications from the classical power-series form depend on the factor-ordering parameter.

Abstract:In this paper we study the behavior of a scalar field coupled to gravitons on the Janis-Newman-Winicour background, which somewhat interpolates between Minkowski and Schwarzschild space-times. The most important physical effect we find is that there is a 17-dimensional position-dependent mass matrix YABpxq which happens to be non-diagonal in the basis in which the kinetic energy term is diagonal. There is a different basis with a mixing between the scalar field and the graviton trace in which the mass matrix is diagonal, but this basis fails to diagonalize the kinetic energy piece. This is at variance with what happens in the Standard Model with the quark mixing, and is of course due to the fact that the mass matrix here is position dependent and thus it does not commute with the kinetic energy operator, so that both operators cannot be diagonalized simultaneously.

A non-Perturbative and Background-Independent Formulation of Quadratic Gravity

Abstract:A non-perturbative and background-independent quantum formulation of quadratic gravity is provided. A canonical quantization procedure introduced in previous works, named after Dirac and Pauli, is here applied to quadratic gravity to obtain, as required by consistency, a well-defined Euclidean path integral. The theory is unitary: all probabilities are non negative and they sum up to one. We obtain path-integral expressions for the transition amplitudes, Green's functions and generic matrix elements of time-ordered products of the metric. As a byproduct, similar results are also obtained for a scalar-field four-derivative interacting model. In this way, among other things, previous perturbative and background-dependent calculations are justified. The (quantum) quadratic gravity effective action, whose field equations determine the vacuum expectation value of the metric in the presence of a generic energy-momentum tensor, is constructed. The classical limit of the effective action turns out to be equivalent to the starting classical action of quadratic gravity, whose runaway rates were previously shown to be slow enough to be compatible with observations. Finally, the constructed non-perturbative and background-independent quantum quadratic gravity is applied to quantum cosmology to obtain a path-integral expression for the wave function of the universe, which satisfies a sort of Wheeler-DeWitt equation. This application allows us to understand at the quantum level why our universe is nearly homogeneous and isotropic.

The quantization of gravity: The quantization of the full Einstein equations

Abstract:We quantized the full Einstein equations in a globally hyperbolic spacetime $N=N^{n+1}$, $n\ge 3$, and found solutions of the resulting hyperbolic equation in a fiber bundle $E$ which can be expressed as a product of spatial eigenfunctions (eigendistributions) and temporal eigenfunctions. The spatial eigenfunctions form a basis in an appropriate Hilbert space while the temporal eigenfunctions are solutions to a second order ordinary differential equation in $\mathbb{R}_+$. In case $n\ge 17$ and provided the cosmological constant $\Lambda$ is negative the temporal eigenfunctions are eigenfunctions of a self-adjoint operator $\hat H_0$ such that the eigenvalues are countable and the eigenfunctions form an orthonormal basis of a Hilbert space.

Renormalisation of postquantum-classical gravity

Abstract:One of the obstacles to reconciling quantum theory with general relativity, is constructing a theory which is both consistent with observation, and and gives finite answers at high energy, so that the theory holds at arbitrarily short distances. Quantum field theory achieves this through the process of renormalisation, but famously, perturbative quantum gravity fails to be renormalisable, even without coupling to matter. Recently, an alternative to quantum gravity has been proposed, in which the geometry of spacetime is taken to be classical rather than quantum, while still being coupled to quantum matter fields [1, 2]. This can be done consistently, provided the dynamics is fundamentally stochastic. Here, we find that the pure gravity theory is formally renormalisable. We do so via the path integral formulation by relating the classical-quantum action to that of quadratic gravity which is renormalisable. Because the action induces stochastic dynamics of space-time, rather than deterministic evolution of a quantum field, the classical-quantum theory is free of tachyons and negative norm ghosts. The key remaining question is whether the renormalisation prescription retains completely positive (CP) dynamics. This consideration appears to single out the scale invariant and asymptotically free theory. We give further evidence that the theory is CP, by showing that the two-point function of the scalar mode is positive. To support the use of precision accelerometers in testing the quantum nature of spacetime, we also compute the power spectral density of the acceleration. The results presented here have a number of implications for inflation, CMB data, and experiments to test the quantum nature of spacetime. They may also provide a way to compute probabilities in the regime of quantum gravity where spacetime can be treated as effectively classical.

Abstract:The covariant canonical transformation theory applied to the relativistic Hamiltonian theory of classical matter fields in dynamical space-time yields a novel (first order) gauge field theory of gravitation. The emerging field equations necessarily embrace a quadratic Riemann term added to Einstein's linear equation. The quadratic term endows space-time with inertia generating a dynamic response of the space-time geometry to deformations relative to (Anti) de Sitter geometry. A "deformation parameter" is identified, the inverse dimensionless coupling constant governing the relative strength of the quadratic invariant in the Hamiltonian, and directly observable via the deceleration parameter $q_0$. The quadratic invariant makes the system inconsistent with Einstein's constant cosmological term, $\Lambda = \mathrm{const}$. In the Friedman model this inconsistency is resolved with the scaling ansatz of a "cosmological function", $\Lambda(a)$, where $a$ is the scale parameter of the FLRW metric. %Moreover, the strain generated by the quadratic term turns out to act as a geometrical stress. The cosmological function can be normalized such that with the $\Lambda$ CDM parameter set the present-day observables, the Hubble constant and the deceleration parameter, can be reproduced. %We analyze the asymptotics of the such normalized Friedman equations with respect to both, the fundamental parameters (coupling constants) and the scale $a$. With this parameter set we recover the dark energy scenario in the late epoch. The proof that inflation in the early phase is caused by the "geometrical fluid" representing the inertia of space-time is yet pending, though.

An Elementary Canonical Classical and Quantum Dynamics for General Relativity

Abstract:A consistent canonical classical and quantum dynamics in the framework of special relativity was formulated by Stueckelberg in 1941, and generalized to many body theory by Horwitz and Piron in 1973 (SHP). In this paper, this theory is embedded into the framework of general relativity (GR), here denoted by SHPGR. The canonical Poisson brackets of the SHP theory remain valid (invariant under local coordinate transformations) on the manifold of GR , and provide the basis for formulating a canonical quantum theory; the result (here defined as SHPGR) is generalized to many-body theory. A scalar product is defined for constructing the Hilbert space and a Hermitian momentum operator defined. The Fourier transform is defined, connecting momentum and coordinate representations. The potential which may occur in the SHP theory emerges as a spacetime scalar mass distribution in GR, and electromagnetism corresponds to a gauge field on the quantum mechanical GR Hilbert space in both the single particle and many-body theory. A diffeomorphism covariant form of Newton's law is found as an immediate consequence of the canonical formulation of SHPGR. We compute the classical evolution of the off shell mass on the orbit of a particle and the force on a particle and its energy at the Schwarzschild horizon. The propagator for evolution of the one body state is studied and a scattering theory on the manifold is worked out.

Revealing A Trans-Planckian World Solves The Cosmological Constant Problem

Abstract:The Planck scale is usually believed to be an unpassable wall. Putting a cutoff there and thinking of it as a quantized spacetime entity shows that. However, this is exactly the cause of many problems in quantum gravity. The cosmological constant problem also comes down to the problem of how to describe a trans-Planckian world by a continuum theory that shall be renormalizable and background free. Here, we show that when quantizing gravity in a diffeomorphism-invariant method, in which background freedom arises asymptotically as an exact conformal symmetry, the zero-point energy vanishes identically. Thus, there is no problem with the cosmological constant, which is a physical constant, namely a renormalization group invariant. We also argue that new quanta based on the background freedom emerge and spacetime is discretized dynamically. Primordial fluctuations will originate from such quanta.

Time Evolution in Canonical Quantum Gravity is Trivial

Abstract:The Wheeler-DeWitt equation does not describe any explicit time evolution of the wave function, and somehow related to this issue, there is no natural way of defining an invariant inner product that provides a viable probability interpretation. We show that both of these difficulties are solved in a covariant canonical formulation of general relativity where the configuration space is extended by introducing the embedding coordinates as dynamical variables. The formalism describes the evolution of the wave function from one spacelike slice to another, but as in the case of spatial diffeomorphisms this is simply implemented by a coordinate change in the wave function. We demonstrate how the time equation disappears after gauge fixing that removes the embedding coordinates. These findings indicate that the time evolution is trivial in a background independent formulation of quantum gravity.

Can you hear the Planck mass?

Abstract:For the Laplacian of an $n$-Riemannian manifold $X$, the Weyl law states that the $k$-th eigenvalue is asymptotically proportional to $(k/V)^{2/n}$, where $V$ is the volume of $X$. We show that this result can be derived via physical considerations by demanding that the gravitational potential for a compactification on $X$ behaves in the expected $(4+n)$-dimensional way at short distances. In simple product compactifications, when particle motion on $X$ is ergodic, for large $k$ the eigenfunctions oscillate around a constant, and the argument is relatively straightforward. The Weyl law thus allows to reconstruct the four-dimensional Planck mass from the asymptotics of the masses of the spin 2 Kaluza--Klein modes. For warped compactifications, a puzzle appears: the Weyl law still depends on the ordinary volume $V$, while the Planck mass famously depends on a weighted volume obtained as an integral of the warping function. We resolve this tension by arguing that in the ergodic case the eigenfunctions oscillate now around a power of the warping function rather than around a constant, a property that we call weighted quantum ergodicity. This has implications for the problem of gravity localization, which we discuss. We show that for spaces with D$p$-brane singularities the spectrum is discrete only for $p =6,7,8$, and for these cases we rigorously prove the Weyl law by applying modern techniques from RCD theory.

Wheeler-De Witt equation and the Canonical Construction of the Glauber-Sudarshan States in Quantum Gravity

Abstract:Quantum gravity is fundamentally different from the non-gravitational quantum field theories in the sense that most of the techniques derived for the latter cannot be easily extended to the former. For example, correlation functions in quantum gravity become hard to define properly if the bulk Hamiltonian - as a consequence of the Wheeler-De Witt equation - itself annihilates the states thus rendering the evolution operators to identities. An even harder problem is the back reactions of the fluctuations on the background itself. We argue that the construction of the Glauber-Sudarshan states takes care of these two issues in rather interesting ways. For the former, the displacement operators are defined at every instant of time, without directly invoking the Hamiltonian, so that they naturally extend to the path-integral description as sum over histories. For the latter, the back reactions of the fluctuations are carefully accounted for by the Schwinger-Dyson equations. In fact these back reactions are in part responsible for converting the ambient supersymmetric Minkowski background to a transient de Sitter phase. Expectedly, this transient de Sitter phase is defined well within the validity regime of the trans-Planckian bound.

Do we live in an eigenstate of the "fundamental constants" operators?

Abstract:We propose that the constants of Nature we observe (which appear as parameters in the classical action) are quantum observables in a kinematical Hilbert space. When all of these observables commute, our proposal differs little from the treatment given to classical parameters in quantum information theory, at least if we were to inhabit a constants' eigenstate. Non-commutativity introduces novelties, due to its associated uncertainty and complementarity principles, and it may even preclude hamiltonian evolution. The system typically evolves as a quantum superposition of hamiltonian evolutions resulting from a diagonalization process, and these are usually quite distinct from the original one (defined in terms of the non-commuting constants). We present several examples targeting $G$, $c$ and $\Lambda $, and the dynamics of homogeneous and isotropic Universes. If we base our construction on the Heisenberg algebra and the quantum harmonic oscillator, the alternative dynamics tends to silence matter (effectively setting $G$ to zero), and make curvature and the cosmological constant act as if their signs are reversed. Thus, the early Universe expands as a quantum superposition of different Milne or de Sitter expansions for all material equations of state, even though matter nominally dominates the density, $\rho $, because of the negligible influence of $G\rho $ on the dynamics. A superposition of Einstein static universes can also be obtained. We also investigate the results of basing our construction on the algebra of $SU(2)$, into which we insert information about the sign of a constant of Nature, or whether its action is switched on or off. In this case we find examples displaying quantum superpositions of bounces at the initial state for the Universe.

Energy and equations of motion in a tentative theory of gravity with a privileged reference frame

Abstract:Based on a tentative interpretation of gravity as a pressure force, a scalar theory of gravity was previously investigated. It assumes gravitational contraction (dilation) of space (time) standards. In the static case, the same Newton law as in special relativity was expressed in terms of these distorted local standards, and was found to imply geodesic motion. Here, the formulation of motion is reexamined in the most general situation. A consistent Newton law can still be defined, which accounts for the time variation of the space metric, but it is not compatible with geodesic motion for a time-dependent field. The energy of a test particle is defined: it is constant in the static case. Starting from 'dust', a balance equation is then derived for the energy of matter. If the Newton law is assumed, the field equation of the theory allows to rewrite this as a true conservation equation, including the gravitational energy. The latter contains a Newtonian term, plus the square of the relative rate of the local velocity of gravitation waves (or that of light), the velocity being expressed in terms of absolute standards.

Weak equivalence principle and nonrelativistic limit of general dispersion relations

Abstract:We study the weak equivalence principle in the context of modified dispersion relations, a prevalent approach to quantum gravity phenomenology. We find that generic modified dispersion relations violate the weak equivalence principle. The acceleration in general depends on the mass of the test body, unless the Hamiltonian is either two-homogeneous in the test particles' 4-momenta or the corresponding Lagrangian differs from the homogeneous case by a total derivative only. The key ingredient of this calculation is a $3+1$ decomposition of the parametrization invariant relativistic test particle action derived from the dispersion relation. Additionally, we apply a perturbative expansion in the test particle's spatial velocity and the inverse speed of light. To quantify our result, we provide a general formula for the Eötvós factor of modified dispersion relations. As a specific example, we study the $\kappa$-Poincaré dispersion relation. Comparing the ensuing non-vanishing Eötvós factor to recent data from the MICROSCOPE experiment, we obtain a bound of $\kappa^{-1}\geq10^{15}{\rm GeV}/c^2.$.

Consistent Canonical Quantization of Gravity: Recovery of Classical GR from BRST-invariant Coherent States

Abstract:We perform canonical quantization of General Relativity, as an effective quantum field theory below the Planck scale, within the BRST-invariant framework. We show that the promotion of constraints to dynamical equations of motion for auxiliary fields leads to the healthy Hamiltonian flow. In particular, we show that the classical properties of Einstein's gravity, such as vanishing Hamiltonian modulo boundary contribution, is realized merely as an expectation value in appropriate physical states. Most importantly, the physicality is shown not to entail trivial time-evolution for correlation functions. In the present approach we quantize the theory once and for all around the Minkowaski vacuum and treat other would-be classical backgrounds as BRST-invariant coherent states. This is especially important for cosmological spacetimes as it uncovers features that are not visible in ordinary semi-classical treatment. The Poincaré invariance of the vacuum, essential for our quantization, provides strong motivation for spontaneously-broken supersymmetry.

Theoretical and Observational Implications of Planck's Constant as a Running Fine Structure Constant

Abstract:This letter explores how a reinterpretation of the generalized uncertainty principle as an effective variation of Planck's constant provides a physical explanation for a number of fundamental quantities and couplings. In this context, a running fine structure constant is naturally emergent and the cosmological constant problem is solved, yielding a novel connection between gravitation and quantum field theories. The model could potentially clarify the recent experimental observations by the DESI Collaboration that could imply a fading of dark energy over time. When applied to quantum systems and their characteristic length scales, a simple geometric relationship between energy and entropy is disclosed. Lastly, a mass-radius relation for both quantum and classical systems reveals a phase transition-like behaviour similar to thermodynamical systems, which we speculate to be a consequence of topological defects in the universe.

The Quantum Vacuum of Spacetime with a Fundamental Length

Abstract:A quantum theory of gravity implies a fine-grained structure of spacetime, which can be conveniently modeled as some form of pixelation at the Planck scale, with potentially observable consequences. In this work, we build upon previous results to investigate the effect of pixelation on the quantum vacuum, making use of the framework of Doubly Special Relativity (DSR). At the center of the DSR approach is an observer dependent length scale, defining the pixelation of spacetime. A key feature of quantum field theory in DSR is the dispersive nature of the vacuum state and the associated appearance of curvature in momentum space. As a result, the standard treatment of the renormalized stress-energy-momentum tensor acquires correction terms. As an illustration, we present here a calculation of the thermal vacuum and modified Casimir effect, using both modified propagators and momentum measures. We choose a consistent choice of momentum space metric that both generates the modified dispersion relations we use and preserves the Lorentz invariant character of the results obtained. Put together this constitutes a consistent calculation framework we can apply to other more complex scenarios.

Foundations of a Theory of Gravity with a Constraint and its Canonical Quantization

Abstract:The gravitational equations were derived in general relativity (GR) using the assumption of their covariance relative to arbitrary transformations of coordinates. It has been repeatedly expressed an opinion over the past century that such equality of all coordinate systems may not correspond to reality. Nevertheless, no actual verification of the necessity of this assumption has been made to date. The paper proposes a theory of gravity with a constraint, the degenerate variants of which are general relativity (GR) and the unimodular theory of gravity. This constraint is interpreted from a physical point of view as a sufficient condition for the adiabaticity of the process of the evolution of the space-time metric. The original equations of the theory of gravity with the constraint are formulated. On this basis, a unified model of the evolution of the modern, early, and very early Universe is constructed that is consistent with the observational astronomical data but does not require the hypotheses of the existence of dark energy, dark matter or inflatons. It is claimed that: physical time is anisotropic, the gravitational field is the main source of energy of the Universe, the maximum global energy density in the Universe was 64 orders of magnitude smaller the Planckian one, and the entropy density is 18 orders of magnitude higher the value predicted by GR. The value of the relative density of neutrinos at the present time and the maximum temperature of matter in the early Universe are calculated. The wave equation of the gravitational field is formulated, its solution is found, and the nonstationary wave function of the very early Universe is constructed. It is shown that the birth of the Universe was random.
