Abstract:We present a field theoretic model for friction, where the friction coefficient between two surfaces may be calculated based on elastic properties of the surfaces. We assume that the geometry of contact surface is not unusual. We verify Amonton's laws to hold that friction force is proportional to the normal load.This model gives the opportunity to calculate the static coefficient of friction for a few cases, and show that it is in agreement with observed values. Furthermore we show that the coefficient of static friction is independent of apparent surface area in first approximation.

Abstract:The laws of friction are reasonably well understood for the case of blocks in contact with rough plane surfaces. However, as far as bodies with circular sections are concerned, the physics of friction becomes more involving and it is not possible to adopt a simple conceptual framework to explain all phenomena. In particular, there is no approach so far to the problem of the resistance force that opposes to circular bodies that remain at rest while acted upon by small forces. Here we fill this gap by introducing a mechanical model based on both the elasticity theory and Hertz contact mechanics. Our approach furnishes a quantitative expression for the critical force beyond which rest can no longer be maintained. Besides confirming the expected proportionality of the resistance force with the load, our result contains no free parameters and is expressed solely in terms of physical properties of the problem, such as the pressure of the body per unit of superficial area, a relation between the Young modulus of the surface and its Poisson ratio, and the symmetry of the contact.

Abstract:Wearless dry friction of an elastic block of weight N, driven by an external force F over a rigid substrate, is investigated. The slider and substrate surfaces are both microscopically rough, interacting via a repulsive potential that depends on the local overlap. The model reproduces Amontons's laws which state that the friction force is proportional to the normal loading force N and independent of the nominal surface area. In this model, the dynamic friction force decays for large velocities and approaches a finite static friction for small velocities if the surface profiles are self-affine on small length scales.

Abstract:We outline a phenomenological model to assess friction at the interface between two bodies in mutual contact. Although the approach is general, the application inspiring the approach is the discrete element method. The kinematics of the friction process is expressed in terms of the relative 3D motion of the contact point on the two surfaces in mutual contact. The model produces expressions for three friction loads: slide force, roll torque, and spin torque. The cornerstone of the methodology is the process of tracking the evolution/path of the contact point on the surface of the two bodies in mutual contact. The salient attribute of the model lies with its ability to simultaneously compute, in a 3D setup, the slide, roll, and spin friction loads for smooth bodies of arbitrary geometry while accounting for both static and kinematic friction coefficients.

Abstract:The paper presents an experimental and simulative study on anisotropic dry friction . Friction force components tangential and normal to sliding velocity are measured for the corrugated cardboard-felt frictional pair. Six different curves with two-fold symmetry are analysed in terms of modelling anisotropic friction. Next, the parameters of the analysed curves are identified based on the experimental results. Friction hodograph is best described by the Gielis' curve and the superellipse, whereas the ellipse seems to be the worst choice. The sliding potential is described best by the oval. It is shown that modelling of the sliding potential can be crucial in capturing the dynamics of the system and the superelliptical sliding rule can lead to qualitatively different results.

Abstract:The friction force observed at macroscale is the result of interactions at various lower length scales that are difficult to model in a combined manner. For this reason, simplified approaches are required, depending on the specific aspect to be investigated. In particular, the dimensionality of the system is often reduced, especially in models designed to provide a qualitative description of frictional properties of elastic materials, e.g. the spring-block model. In this paper, we implement for the first time a two dimensional extension of the spring-block model, applying it to structured surfaces and investigating by means of numerical simulations the frictional behaviour of a surface in the presence of features like cavities, pillars or complex anisotropic structures. We show how friction can be effectively tuned by appropriate design of such surface features.

Abstract:Traditional laws of friction believe that the friction coefficient of two specific solids takes a constant value. However, molecular simulations revealed that the friction coefficient of nanosized asperity depends strongly on contact size and asperity radius. Since contacting surfaces are always rough consisting of asperities varying dramatically in geometric size, a theoretical model is developed to predict the friction behavior of fractal rough surfaces in this work. The result of atomic-scale simulations of sphere-on-flat friction is summarized into a uniform expression. Then, the size dependent feature of friction at nanoscale is incorporated into the analysis of fractal rough surfaces. The obtained results display the dependence of friction coefficient on roughness, material properties, and load. It is revealed that the friction coefficient decreases with increasing contact area or external load. This model gives a theoretical guideline for the prediction of friction coefficient and the design of friction pairs.

Abstract:In this contribution, typical friction driven structures are summarized and presented considering the mechanical structures and operation principles of different types of piezoelectric motors. A two degree-of-freedom dynamic model with one unilateral frictional contact is built for one of the friction driven structures. Different contact regimes and the transitions between them are identified and analyzed. Numerical simulations are conducted to find out different operation modes of the system concerning the sequence of contact regimes in one steady state period. The influences of parameters on the operation modes and corresponding steady state characteristics are also explored. Some advice are then given in terms of the design of friction driven structures and piezoelectric motors.

Abstract:Abstract The effect of three different friction interface models on an elastic half-space is presented. Three constitutive friction models are studied: Coulomb, soil–concrete interface, and Bouc–Wen, using a computational mechanics framework that can represent the contact patch's material response to static and dynamic surface tractions. This response is observed as strains and stresses present from reciprocating sliding using an elastoplastic friction (EPF) algorithm that also captures energy dissipation and hysteresis due to friction sliding. Additionally, the use of the four-parameter Bouc–Wen model represents a new development in contact mechanics that allows micro-slip of the contact interface to be modeled. Hysteresis loops are generated for the three friction models based on a quasi-static assumption. This algorithm is built into a mesoscale finite element method solver that is able to simulate different loading conditions and provide insight into how the friction models respond to load conditions and inform on experimental data. The energy dissipation from reciprocating friction sliding will be generated for each friction model as a metric that captures surface wear and potential material damage.

Abstract:In classical experiments, it has been found that a rigid cylinder can roll both on and under an inclined rubber plane with a friction force that depends on a power law of velocity, independent of the sign of the normal force. Further, contact area increases significantly with velocity with a related power law. We try to model qualitatively these experiments with a numerical boundary element solution with a standard linear solid and we find for sufficiently large Maugis–Tabor parameter qualitative agreement with experiments. However, friction force increases linearly with velocity at low velocities (like in the case with no adhesive hysteresis) and then decays at large speeds. Quantitative agreement with the Persson–Brener theory of crack propagation is found for the two power law regimes, but when Maugis–Tabor parameter is small, the cut-off stress in Persson–Brener theory depends on all the other dimensionless parameters of the problem.

Abstract:The complexity of the frictional dynamics at the microscopic scale makes difficult to identify all of its controlling parameters. Indeed, experiments on sheared elastic bodies have shown that the static friction coefficient depends on loading conditions, the real area of contact along the interfaces and the confining pressure. Here we show, by means of numerical simulations of a 2D Burridge-Knopoff model with a simple local friction law, that the macroscopic friction coefficient depends non-monotonically on the bulk elasticity of the system. This occurs because elastic constants control the geometrical features of the rupture fronts during the stick-slip dynamics, leading to four different ordering regimes characterized by different orientations of the rupture fronts with respect to the external shear direction. We rationalize these results by means of an energetic balance argument.

Abstract:We propose a simple rubber friction law, which can be used, e.g., in models of tire (and vehicle) dynamics. The friction law is tested by comparing numerical results to the full rubber friction theory (B.N.J. Persson, J. Phys.: Condensed Matter 18, 7789 (2006)). Good agreement is found between the two theories. We describe a two-dimensional (2D) tire model which combines the rubber friction model with a simple mass-spring description of the tire body. The tire model is very flexible and can be used to calculate accurate mu-slip (and the self-aligning torque) curves for braking and cornering or combined motion (e.g., braking during cornering). We present numerical results which illustrate the theory. Simulations of Anti-Blocking System (ABS) braking are performed using two simple control algorithms.

Abstract:We extend the geometrical theory presented in [5] for collisional and frictional particle abrasion to include an independent physical equation for the evolution of mass and volume. We introduce volume weight functions as multipliers of the geometric equations and use these mutipliers to enforce physical volume evolution in the unified equations. The latter predict, in accordance with Sternberg's Law, exponential decay for volume evolution. We describe both the PDE versions, which are generalisations of Bloore's equations and their heuristic ODE approximations, called the box equations. The latter are suitable for tracking the collective abrasion of large particle populations. The mutual abrasion of identical particles, called the self-dual ows, play a key role in explaining geological scenarios. We give stability criteria for the self-dual ows in terms of the parameters of the physical volume evolution models and show that under reasonable assumptions these criteria can be met by physical systems. We also study a natural generalisation, the unidirectional Bloore equation, covering the case of unidirectional abrasion. We have previously shown that his equation admits travelling front solutions with circular profiles. More generally, in three dimensions, they are so-called linear or special Weingarten surfaces.

Abstract:We study the effect of viscoelastic dynamics on the frictional properties of a (mean field) spring-block system pulled on a rough surface by an external drive. When the drive moves at constant velocity V, two dynamical regimes are observed: at fast driving, above a critical threshold Vc, the system slides at the drive velocity and displays a friction force with velocity weakening. Below Vc the steady sliding becomes unstable and a stick-slip regime sets in. In the slide-hold-slide driving protocol, a peak of the friction force appears after the hold time and its amplitude increases with the hold duration. These observations are consistent with the frictional force encoded phenomenologically in the rate-and-state equations. Our model gives a microscopical basis for such macroscopic description.

Abstract:Abstract Adhesion is one of essences with respect to rubber friction because the magnitude of the friction force is closely related to the magnitude of adhesion on a real contact area. However, the real contact area during sliding depends on the state and history of the contact surface. Therefore, the friction force occasionally exhibits rate-, state-, and pressure dependency. In this study, to rationally describe friction and simulate boundary value problems, a rate-, state-, and pressure-dependent friction model based on the elastoplastic theory was formulated. First, the evolution law for the friction coefficient was prescribed. Next, a nonlinear sliding surface (frictional criterion) was adopted, and several other evolution laws for internal state variables were prescribed. Subsequently, the typical response characteristics of the proposed friction model were demonstrated, and its validity was verified by comparing the obtained results with those of experiments conducted considering the contact surface between a rough rubber hemisphere and smooth acrylic plate.

Abstract:The onset of frictional motion couples complex spatiotemporal dynamics of discrete contacts with different orders of magnitude at time and length scales. In order to reveal how these individual scales affect the frictional sliding, we establish a 2D multiscale spring-block model for the frictional sliding at an elastic slider-rigid interface. In this model, the rupture of frictional interface is described by three different types of locally microscopic motion: pinned, sliding and dislocated states. By using realistic boundary conditions, our numerical results can precisely reproduce the loading curves found in previous experiments. The precursor events, corresponding to a discrete sequence of rapid crack-like fronts propagating partially in the contact zone, can also be shown in our simulation. From the analysis of the microscopic motion, we characterize the evolution of the real contact area and the corresponding interface motion at the mesoscale level, and show that the evolution corresponds to four distinct and inter-related phases: detachment, fast and slow slip motion, as well as the rest of slip. These mesoscale behaviors are completely consistent with the existing experimental results and their physical mechanisms can be explained by the detailed information of the numerical simulation. The study is established on a bottom-up multiscale model which provides a comprehensive picture about the complex spatiotemporal dynamics of frictional sliding.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics study of a thin (one to five layers) lubricant film between two substrates in moving contact are performed using Langevin equations with an external damping coefficient depending on distance and velocity of atoms relative the substrates, motivated by microscopic configurations. They show that the minimal friction coefficient is obtained for the solid-sliding regime. A detailed analysis of the results, the comparison with other microscopic modeling approaches of friction, and the evaluation of quantities that can be compared to experiments, such as the velocity of the transition from stick-slip to smooth sliding, are used to discuss the relevance of the microscopic simulations of friction.
