Abstract:Friction plots of polymers sliding on smooth metal surfaces are generally characterized by two regions of distinct dependency on the normal load, with low sensitivity at low stress levels followed by a sharp change in the rate of decrease of friction with increasing pressure at levels above the plastic flow limit of the polymer. A simplified model is proposed to describe this behavior which accounts for the effect of the normal load on the growth of the real contact area and the shear stress at the interface between the polymer and the mating surface. The model has a wide generality when expressed in terms of dimensionless variables, allowing to rationalize the friction behavior of different polymers within a single framework.

Abstract:Earlier work has suggested that the friction of polymers may be explained in terms of the adhesion mechanism originally developed for metals. The present paper confirms this view, but shows that the detailed behaviour differs from that of metals in two main ways. First, in marked contrast to metals, there appears to be little or no junction growth during sliding so that the area of junctions sheared is essentially the same as the area of contact formed under static loading conditions. Secondly, a study of the static indentation properties of polymers on a large scale shows that the deformation is neither purely elastic nor purely plastic but intermediate over a very wide range. The deformation behaviour may be expressed by a single law which may be extrapolated back to predict the area of deformation between crossed fibres at very small loads from deformation experiments carried out on large specimens at very heavy loads. Friction experiments between crossed fibres of circular section show that the friction is directly proportional to the area of deformation so deduced; this suggests that contact occurs at very few asperities, perhaps only one, so that the area of true contact is essentially the same as the area of deformation. This provides a satisfactory explanation of the observed dependence of friction on load and on fibre diameter. At heavy loads on bulk polymer the friction varies less markedly with load, presumably because there is multiple-point contact. Although a number of simplifications are involved, the work provides an effective physical picture of the frictional properties of polymers in terms of their deformation characteristics, assuming the formation of strong interfacial junctions at the regions of real contact. Reasonably good frictional correlation is obtained for a load range of 10 10 to 1 and for surfaces differing in radius of curvature by a factor of more than 300 to 1.

Abstract:Rheological properties of soft, complex materials are essential to biological systems. Networks consisting of semiflexible polymers, which are determinants for dynamics and mechanics inside and outside cells, are described by theories that neglect molecular interactions between individual filaments. Using a surface modification approach, it is shown that such interactive forces significantly contribute to the viscoelastic properties of isotropic network structures. Established model theories, developed to capture the mechanical behavior of soft, complex materials composed of semiflexible polymers, assume that entropic interactions between filaments are primarily responsible for determining the mechanical response. In recent studies, the generally accepted tube model has been challenged in terms of this basic assumption about filament–filament interactions, but also because of its predictions regarding the frequency dependence of the elastic modulus in the intermediate frequency regime. A central question is how molecular interactions and friction between network constituents influence the rheological response of isotropic entangled networks of semiflexible polymers. It has been previously shown that friction forces between aligned pairs of actin filaments are not negligible. Here, the influence of friction forces and attractive interactions on network rheology is systematically investigated by means of targeted surface modification. It is shown that these forces have a qualitative and quantitative influence on the viscoelastic properties of semiflexible polymer networks and contribute to their response to nonlinear deformations. By comparing two polymer model systems with respect to their surface compositions, a possible explanation is given about the origin of acting forces on a molecular level.

Abstract:Sliding contact under high pressure between a more or less rough metal surface and a polymer occurs in diverse manufacturing processes. Transfer of the softer material on the harder counterpart is a common phenomenon under such conditions (high pressure) due to high level of polymer wear. The transfer of worn polymer particles on the metal surface generally has a large influence on friction. A model of wear, transfer and their consequences on friction is described. Based on the third body concept, it shares the created wear particles between the transfer film and particles escaping the contact. The model includes unknown parameters describing particles creation and movement on the one hand, and the friction–transfer relationship on the other hand. The parameters are determined experimentally on a linear reciprocating sliding tribometer, where a polymer-coated bar slides on a rough metallic cylinder in a point contact configuration, under conditions of large sliding length (10mm) and high pressure. Abrasive wear and transfer occur, the initial friction coefficient is shown to follow Coulomb's model (no variation with the applied average pressure); it increases with sliding length (or cycle number) due to increasing coverage of the metal surface by wear particles (or transfer film average thickness). It is shown finally that the model describes quite well the evolution of friction along several cycles.

Abstract:The paper presents an experimental and simulative study on anisotropic dry friction . Friction force components tangential and normal to sliding velocity are measured for the corrugated cardboard-felt frictional pair. Six different curves with two-fold symmetry are analysed in terms of modelling anisotropic friction. Next, the parameters of the analysed curves are identified based on the experimental results. Friction hodograph is best described by the Gielis' curve and the superellipse, whereas the ellipse seems to be the worst choice. The sliding potential is described best by the oval. It is shown that modelling of the sliding potential can be crucial in capturing the dynamics of the system and the superelliptical sliding rule can lead to qualitatively different results.

Abstract:The molecular mechanism of slip at the interface between polymer melts and weakly attractive smooth surfaces is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. In agreement with our previous studies on slip flow of shear-thinning fluids, it is shown that the slip length passes through a local minimum at low shear rates and then increases rapidly at higher shear rates. We found that at sufficiently high shear rates, the slip flow over atomically flat crystalline surfaces is anisotropic. It is demonstrated numerically that the friction coefficient at the liquid-solid interface (the ratio of viscosity and slip length) undergoes a transition from a constant value to the power-law decay as a function of the slip velocity. The characteristic velocity of the transition correlates well with the diffusion velocity of fluid monomers in the first fluid layer near the solid wall at equilibrium. We also show that in the linear regime, the friction coefficient is well described by a function of a single variable, which is a product of the magnitude of surface-induced peak in the structure factor and the contact density of the adjacent fluid layer. The universal relationship between the friction coefficient and induced fluid structure holds for a number of material parameters of the interface: fluid density, chain length, wall-fluid interaction energy, wall density, lattice type and orientation, thermal or solid walls.

Abstract:This chapter reviews the processes which are generally regarded as being responsible for the frictional work dissipated when two solid bodies, one of which is a polymeric composite are moved over one another while in contact. Two major processes are envisaged as separate entities; the ploughing or deformation mode and the interface or adhesive mode. The distinction between these two mechanisms is based on the thickness of the interface region undergoing deformation and is imprecise, but nevertheless serves as a useful approximation. The characteristics of the dissipation processes in the two components are recognised as being rather different and these differences are considered first in the context of pure polymers. An examination of the changes produced by the inclusion of secondary phases is then discussed in terms of the two prime dissipation processes, Coulombic and Schallamach mechanisms, which do not fit easily into the two main categories are considered separately and their potential contributions are discussed.

Abstract:This paper proposes a wear model for polymers based on so-called mechanistic processes comprising both low cycle fatigue and abrasive wear mechanisms, which are prominent in polymer–metal sliding interfaces. Repeated elastic contact causes localized fatigue, whereas abrasive part is an anticipatory outcome of plastic contacts by hard metal asperities on to soft polymer surface. Further, presuming adhesive interactions in elastic–plastic contacts, asperity contact theories with necessary modifications were analyzed to assess load and separation for their subsequent use in elementary wear correlations. Both Gaussian and Weibull distributions of asperity heights were considered to include statistics of surface microgeometry. Finally, volumetric wear was written in terms of roughness parameters, material properties, and sliding distance. Validation was conducted extensively, and reliability of the formulation was achieved to a large extent. Experimental part of this work included several pin-on-disk tests using polyether ether ketone (PEEK) pins and 316L stainless steel disks. Disks with different roughness characteristics generated by polishing, turning, and milling were tested. Experimental results agreed well with predictions for the polished surface and with some deviations for other two surfaces. Further, fatigue to abrasive wear ratio was identified as an analytical tool to predict prevailing wear mechanism for polymer-metal tribo-systems. After examining the considered cases, it was both interesting and physically intuitive to observe a complete changeover in wear mechanisms following simply an alteration of roughness characteristics.
Velocity dependence of friction of confined polymers

Abstract:We present molecular dynamics friction calculations for confined hydrocarbon solids with molecular lengths from 20 to 1400 carbon atoms. Two cases are considered: (a) polymer sliding against a hard substrate, and (b) polymer sliding on polymer. We discuss the velocity dependence of the frictional shear stress for both cases. In our simulations, the polymer films are very thin (approx. 3 nm), and the solid walls are connected to a thermostat at a short distance from the polymer slab. Under these circumstances we find that frictional heating effects are not important, and the effective temperature in the polymer film is always close to the thermostat temperature. In the first setup (a), for hydrocarbons with molecular lengths from 60 to 1400 carbon atoms, the shear stresses are nearly independent of molecular length, but for the shortest hydrocarbon C20H42 the frictional shear stress is lower. In all cases the frictional shear stress increases monotonically with the sliding velocity. For polymer sliding on polymer [case (b)] the friction is much larger, and the velocity dependence is more complex. For hydrocarbons with molecular lengths from 60 to 140 C-atoms, the number of monolayers of lubricant increases (abruptly) with increasing sliding velocity (from 6 to 7 layers), leading to a decrease of the friction. Before and after the layering transition, the frictional shear stresses are nearly proportional to the logarithm of sliding velocity. For the longest hydrocarbon (1400 C-atoms) the friction shows no dependence on the sliding velocity, and for the shortest hydrocarbon (20 C-atoms) the frictional shear stress increases nearly linearly with the sliding velocity.

A 2-D Model for friction of complex anisotropic surfaces

Abstract:The friction force observed at macroscale is the result of interactions at various lower length scales that are difficult to model in a combined manner. For this reason, simplified approaches are required, depending on the specific aspect to be investigated. In particular, the dimensionality of the system is often reduced, especially in models designed to provide a qualitative description of frictional properties of elastic materials, e.g. the spring-block model. In this paper, we implement for the first time a two dimensional extension of the spring-block model, applying it to structured surfaces and investigating by means of numerical simulations the frictional behaviour of a surface in the presence of features like cavities, pillars or complex anisotropic structures. We show how friction can be effectively tuned by appropriate design of such surface features.

Abstract:Abstract.We study the sliding friction for viscoelastic solids, e.g., rubber, on hard flat substrate surfaces. We consider first the fluctuating shear stress inside a viscoelastic solid which results from the thermal motion of the atoms or molecules in the solid. At the nanoscale the thermal fluctuations are very strong and give rise to stress fluctuations in the MPa-range, which is similar to the depinning stresses which typically occur at solid-rubber interfaces, indicating the crucial importance of thermal fluctuations for rubber friction on smooth surfaces. We develop a detailed model which takes into account the influence of thermal fluctuations on the depinning of small contact patches (stress domains) at the rubber-substrate interface. The theory predicts that the velocity dependence of the macroscopic shear stress has a bell-shaped form, and that the low-velocity side exhibits the same temperature dependence as the bulk viscoelastic modulus, in qualitative agreement with experimental data. Finally, we discuss the influence of small-amplitude substrate roughness on rubber sliding friction.

Abstract:Friction and wear of polymers and their composites introduce further difficulty that polymers are simply affected by working conditions and sliding media. The disagreement between friction in polymers and metallic friction is resulting from the alterations in the elastic and plastic behavior of metallic materials and the viscoelastic performance of polymeric materials. It is expected that, compared to metals, polymers are easily to meet elastic distortion when in contact. The wear mechanisms are described through extensive categories: abrasive, adhesive, surface fatigue, and others. The influences controlling friction and wear of polymers are broadly argued. There are various mechanisms governing the tribological behavior of the polymer moving on metal tribosystems including transfer film, wear regimes, and pv-limit. The basics of polymeric composites and how numerous compositions and structures can affect their tribological behavior are explained.

Abstract:The modes of attachments, detachments and relaxations of molecules of rubbers and gels on solid surfaces are keys to understanding their frictional properties. An early stochastic model of polymer relaxations on surfaces was given by Schallamach, which has now evolved in various ways. A review of these developments is presented along with the experimental data that elucidate the kinetic friction of smooth rubber against smooth surfaces. These soft rubbers exhibit various types of instabilities while sliding on surfaces. A few examples of these instabilities are provided.

Abstract:The rheology of concentrated suspensions of particles is complex and typically exhibits a shear-thickening behavior in the case of repulsive interactions. Despite the recent interest arisen, the causes of the shear-thickening remain unclear. Frictional contacts have been able to explain the discontinuous shear thickening in simulations. However, the interparticle friction coefficient is considered to be constant in most simulations and theoretical works reported to date despite the fact that tribological experiments demonstrate that the friction coefficient can not only be constant (boundary regime) but also decrease (mixed regime) or even increase (full-film lubrication regime), depending on the normal force and the relative velocity between the particles and the interstitial liquid between them. Interestingly, the transition between the boundary regime and the full-lubrication regime is governed by the particle average roughness. Particle-level simulations of suspensions of hard spheres were carried out using short-range lubrication and roughness-dependent frictional forces describing the full Stribeck curve. Suspensions with different particle's roughness were simulated to show that the particle roughness is a key factor in the shear-thickening behavior; for sufficiently rough particles, the suspension exhibits a remarkable shear-thickening, while for sufficiently smooth particles, the discontinuous shear-thickening disappears.

Abstract:Recent studies show interest in materials with asymmetric friction forces. We investigate terminal motion of a solid body with circular contact area. We assume that friction forces are asymmetric orthotropic. Two cases of pressure distribution are analyzed: Hertz and Boussinesq laws. Equations for friction force and moment are formulated and solved for these cases. Numer- ical results show significant impact of the asymmetry of friction on the motion. Our results can be used for more accurate prediction of contact behavior of bodies made from new materials with asymmetric surface textures.
Frictional behavior of solid polymers on a metal surface at processing conditions

Abstract:The frictional coefficients of three glassy polymers (polystyrene, polycarbonate, and polymethylmethacrylate) and three crystalline polymers (high density polyethylene, low density polyethylene and polypropylene) on a highly polished steel surface were measured at high temperatures, high pressures, and high speeds, all comparable to actual processing conditions. The frictional behavior of these polymers was found to depend on temperature, pressure‐and speed in a very complicated manner. There appears to exist inter‐relationships among the temperature, pressure and speed dependences of the frictional coefficients. The frictional coefficients of ductile, crystalline polymers as a function of temperature appear to undergo two distinct transitions: one associated with yielding and the other associated with melting. The frictional coefficients of glassy polymers go through only one transition, associated with the glass transition. The friction‐generated heat at high pressures and high speeds can increase the sliding interface temperature of a polymer to values much greater than the metal surface temperature, and thus the polymer can start to melt (or plasticate) at metal surface temperatures appreciably below its thermodynamic melting (or glass transition) temperature.

Abstract:In classical experiments, it has been found that a rigid cylinder can roll both on and under an inclined rubber plane with a friction force that depends on a power law of velocity, independent of the sign of the normal force. Further, contact area increases significantly with velocity with a related power law. We try to model qualitatively these experiments with a numerical boundary element solution with a standard linear solid and we find for sufficiently large Maugis–Tabor parameter qualitative agreement with experiments. However, friction force increases linearly with velocity at low velocities (like in the case with no adhesive hysteresis) and then decays at large speeds. Quantitative agreement with the Persson–Brener theory of crack propagation is found for the two power law regimes, but when Maugis–Tabor parameter is small, the cut-off stress in Persson–Brener theory depends on all the other dimensionless parameters of the problem.

Abstract:Experiments have shown that the coefficient of friction in steel‐polymer interfaces is influenced by several interacting parameters, making it difficult to accurately model the instantaneously varying coefficient of friction in sliding seismic isolation bearings. A new model to characterize the variation of the coefficient of friction in sliding seismic isolation bearings in which a thermoplastic slides relative to a steel surface is presented. The model takes into account the variation in the coefficient of friction produced by changes in sliding velocity, normal pressure, and stick‐slip phenomena, as well as degradation due to frictional heating. In particular, the model takes into account the differences in behavior during reversing and nonreversing stick‐slip transitions. It is shown that the proposed model is able to reproduce very well experimental results of friction tests using various steel‐polymer interfaces.

Abstract:The HIV envelope glycoprotein gp120 plays a critical role in virus entry, and thus, its structure is of extreme interest for the development of novel therapeutics and vaccines. To date, high resolution structural information about gp120 in complex with gp41 has proven intractable. In this study, we characterize the structural properties of gp120 in the presence and absence of gp41 domains by NMR. Using the peptide probe 12p1 (sequence, RINNIPWSEAMM), which was identified previously as an entry inhibitor that binds to gp120, we identify atoms of 12p1 in close contact with gp120 in the monomeric and trimeric states. Interestingly, the binding mode of 12p1 with gp120 is similar for clades B and C. In addition, we show a subtle difference in the binding mode of 12p1 in the presence of gp41 domains, i.e. the trimeric state, which we interpret as small differences in the gp120 structure in the presence of gp41.
