Abstract:The current–voltage characteristics of a positionally disordered superconducting Josephson-junction network are investigated numerically. An efficient algorithm is proposed which enables one to simulate networks with up to 1024×1024 nodes. The I–V curves are highly nonlinear in the ordered phase. For a given temperature and external current, it is observed that the resistivity increases with disorder strength. This is in contrast to the behaviour of type-II superconductors in the mixed state where disorder reduces the resistivity through vortex pinning.

Abstract:On the basis of resistively-shunted junction dynamics, we study vortex dynamics in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays with asymmetrically single and bimodulated periodic pinning potential for the full range of vortex density f. The ratchet effect occurring at a certain range of temperature, current, and f, is observed in our simulation. We explain the microscopic behavior behind this effect by analyzing the vortex distribution and interaction. The reversal of the ratchet effect can be observed at several f values for a small driven current. This effect is stronger when the asymmetric potential is simultaneously introduced in two directions.

Abstract:Computer simulations on Josephson vortex systems driven by in-plane currents in cuprate high-T-c superconductors have been performed. For high anisotropy and magnetic field, we find power-law I-V characteristics with the index jumping from 1 (i.e., Ohmic) at high temperatures to >= 3 (i.e., non-Ohmic) at intermediate temperatures, which can be attributed to a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition. In the KT phase, simulations reveal a resistivity independent of the angle between the current and the magnetic field, i.e., orientation-independent dissipation, due to the intralayer quasi-long-range order and interlayer short-range order of Josephson vortices. For low anisotropy and magnetic field, an orientation-dependent non-Ohmic dissipation is observed where the three-dimensional long-range order exists. The present approach provides a unified explanation to previous experimental observations in the non-Ohmic regime.

Abstract:Based on the resistively shunted junction dynamics, we numerically investigate the superconducting phase transitions of two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays exposed to a dilute external field with the magnetic flux density f=1/25. Dynamic scaling analysis of current-voltage characteristics shows that a Kosterlitz–Thouless–Berezinskii (KTB) phase transition occurs at a finite temperature in the absence of disorder. When the disorder is introduced into the bond, the phase transition would be driven into a non-KTB type, where a possible glass transition is suggested. The effects of the bond disorder on the critical temperature and critical exponents are also discussed. The further experimental works to realize well known KTB and glass transitions in Josephson junction arrays are clearly called for.

Abstract:A numerical study of Nernst signal was carried out in the two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays,by using the time-dependent Gintzburg-Landau dynamics.The Nernst signal as a function of the temperature and external fields were obtained through extensive simulations.The result showed that huge Nernst signal occured when the temperature was above the superconducting transition temperature.Moreover,a non-monotonous behavior of Nernst signal with respect to the magnetic field was clearly appeared.The findings were qualitatively consistent with the experimental observations in some high-Tc Cuprates.

Abstract:We demonstrate that a highly frustrated anisotropic Josephson junction array(JJA) on a square lattice exhibits a zero-temperature jamming transition, which shares much in common with those in granular systems. Anisotropy of the Josephson couplings along the horizontal and vertical directions plays roles similar to normal load or density in granular systems. We studied numerically static and dynamic response of the system against shear, i. e. injection of external electric current at zero temperature. Current-voltage curves at various strength of the anisotropy exhibit universal scaling features around the jamming point much as do the flow curves in granular rheology, shear-stress vs shear-rate. It turns out that at zero temperature the jamming transition occurs right at the isotropic coupling and anisotropic JJA behaves as an exotic fragile vortex matter : it behaves as superconductor (vortex glass) into one direction while normal conductor (vortex liquid) into the other direction even at zero temperature. Furthermore we find a variant of the theoretical model for the anisotropic JJA quantitatively reproduces universal master flow-curves of the granular systems. Our results suggest an unexpected common paradigm stretching over seemingly unrelated fields - the rheology of soft materials and superconductivity.

Abstract:We study theoretically a variety of collective quantum phases occurring in frustrated saw-tooth chains of Josephson junctions embedded in a dissipationless transmission line. The basic element of a system, i.e., the triangular superconducting cell, contains two $0$- and one $\pi$- Josephson junctions characterized by $E_J$ and $\alpha E_J$ Josephson energies, accordingly. In the frustrated regime the low energy quantum dynamics of a single cell is determined by anticlockwise or clockwise flowing persistent currents (vortex/antivortex). The direct embedding of $\pi$-Josephson junctions in a transmission line allows to establish a short/long-range interaction between (anti)vortices of well separated cells. By making use of the variational approach, we map the superconducting circuit Hamiltonian to an effective $XX$ spin model with an exchange spin-spin interaction decaying with the distance $x$ as $x^{-\beta}$, and the local $\hat \sigma_{x,n}$-terms corresponding to the coherent quantum beats between vortex and antivortex in a single cell. We obtain that in long arrays as $N \gg \ell_0 \simeq \sqrt{C/C_0}$, where $C$ and $C_0$ are capacitances of $0$-Josephson junction and transmission line, accordingly, the amplitude of quantum beats is strongly suppressed. By means of exact numerical diagonalization, we study the interplay between the coherent quantum beats and the exchange spin-spin interaction leading to the appearance of various collective quantum phases such as the paramagnetic ($P$), compressible superfluid ($CS$) and weakly compressible superfluid ($w$-$CS$) states.

Abstract:We show that a previously reported discrepancy between simulations of superconducting Josephson junction arrays and the theoretical analysis of Ambegaokar, Halperin, Nelson, and Siggia (AHNS) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 40, 783 (1978)] is rooted in a peculiar finite-size effect under periodic boundary conditions. Our simulation results for the largest array support the power-law I-V curves predicted by AHNS. Analysis of the vortex dynamics reveals two intrinsic length scales set by the applied current, which define three size regimes with distinctive I-V characteristics.

Abstract:In superconductors, vortices induced by a magnetic field are nucleated where some random fluctuations determine the nucleation position, and then may be pinned by impurities or boundaries, impeding the development of vortex-based quantum devices. Here, we propose a superconducting structure, which allows to nucleate and control vortices on-demand by controlling magnetic fields and currents. Using time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, we study a driven vortex motion in two-dimensional Corbino geometries of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor Josephson junctions. We remedy the randomness of nucleation by introducing normal conducting rails to the Corbino disk to guide the nucleation process and motion of vortices towards the junction. We elaborate on the consequences of rail-vortex and vortex-vortex interactions to the quantization of resistance across the junction. Finally, we simulate the nucleations and manipulations of two and four vortices in Corbino networks, and discuss its application to Majorana zero mode braiding operations. Abstract:The superconducting quantum interference (SQI) patterns of Josephson junctions fabricated from hybrid structures that interface an s-wave superconductor with a topological insulator can be used to detect signatures of novel quasiparticle states. Here, we compare calculated and experimental SQI patterns obtained from hybrid junctions fabricated on cadmium arsenide, a two-dimensional topological insulator. The calculations account for the effects of Abrikosov (anti-) vortices in the superconducting contacts. They describe the experimentally observed deviations of the SQI from an ideal Fraunhofer pattern, including anomalous phase shifts, node lifting, even/odd modulations of the lobes, irregular lobe spacing, and an asymmetry in the positive/negative magnetic field. We also show that under a current bias, these vortices enter the electrodes even if there is no intentionally applied external magnetic field. The results show that Abrikosov vortices in the electrodes of the junctions can explain many of the observed anomalies in the SQI patterns of topological insulator Josephson junctions.

Abstract:Flux quantization has been widely regarded as the hallmark of the macroscopic quantum state of superconductivity. However, practical design of superconductor devices exploiting finite size confinement effects may induce exotic phenomena, including nonquantized vortices. In our research, the magnetic flux of vortices has been studied in a series of superconducting strips as a function of the strip width and the penetration depth. In both circumstances, the observation using scanning Hall probe microscope (SHPM) displays a controlled evolution from singly quantized vortices to nonquantized ones. It is also found that the magnetic flux is immune to the flowing supercurrent. The simulations based on Ginzburg-Landau theory agree well with experimental results. The observed behavior of the vortex flux may open new perspectives for fundamental research and applications based on vortex matter, such as vortex-memory devices and magnetic field traps for ultracold atoms.

Abstract:The Josephson junction of a strong spin-orbit material under a magnetic field is a promising Majorana fermion candidate. Supercurrent enhancement by a magnetic field has been observed in the InAs nanowire Josephson junctions and assigned to a topological transition. In this work we observe a similar phenomenon but discuss the nontopological origin by considering the trapping of quasiparticles by vortices that penetrate the superconductor under a finite magnetic field. This assignment is supported by the observed hysteresis of the switching current when sweeping up and down the magnetic field. Our experiment shows the importance of quasiparticles in superconducting devices with a magnetic field, which can provide important insights for the design of qubits using superconductors.

Abstract:We employ the Einstein-Abelian-Higgs theory to investigate the structure of vortex-antivortex lattices within a superconductor driven by spatial periodic magnetic fields. By adjusting the parameters of the external magnetic field, including the period ( T ) and the amplitude ( B0 ), various distinct vortex states emerge. These states encompass the Wigner crystallization state, the vortex cluster state, and the suppressed state. Abstract:Inspired by the recent experiments in monolayer iron-based superconductors, we theoretically investigate properties of a two-dimensional multiband superconductor, focusing on two aspects. First, for vortex bound states, the spatial anisotropy and positions of electron density peaks are associated with interband couplings. Second, even with inversion symmetry, there allows a Ising-type spin-orbit coupling, leading to the enhanced in-plane upper critical field.

Acceleration-driven dynamics of Josephson vortices in coplanar superfluid rings

Abstract:Precise control of topologically protected excitations, such as quantum vortices in atomtronic circuits, opens new possibilities for future quantum technologies. We theoretically investigate the dynamics of Josephson vortices (rotational fluxons) induced by coupled persistent currents in a system of coplanar double-ring atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. We study the Josephson effect in an atomic Josephson junction formed by coaxial ring-shaped condensates. Tunneling superflows, initiated by an imbalance in atomic populations between the rings, are significantly influenced by the persistent currents in the inner and outer rings. This results in pronounced Josephson oscillations in the population imbalance for both co-rotating and non-rotating states. If a linear acceleration is applied to the system, our analysis reveals peculiar azimuthal tunneling patterns and dynamics of Josephson vortices which leads to non-zero net tunneling current and shows sensitivity to the acceleration magnitude. When multiple Josephson vortices are present, asymmetric vortex displacements that correlate with both the magnitude and direction of acceleration can be measured, offering potential for quantum sensing applications.

Abstract:At the interface between two fluid layers in relative motion, infinitesimal fluctuations can be exponentially amplified, inducing vorticity and the breakdown of laminar flow. While shear flow instabilities in classical fluids have been extensively observed in various contexts, controlled experiments in the presence of quantized circulation are quite rare. Here we observe how the contact interface between two counter-rotating atomic superflows develops into an ordered circular array of quantized vortices, which loses stability and rolls up into vortex clusters. We extract the instability growth rates and find that they obey the same scaling relations across different superfluid regimes, ranging from weakly interacting bosonic to strongly correlated fermionic pair condensates. Our results establish connections between vortex arrays and shear flow instabilities, suggesting a possible interpretation of the observed quantized vortex dynamics as a manifestation of the underlying unstable flow. Moreover, they open the way for exploring out-of-equilibrium phenomena such as vortex matter phase transitions and the spontaneous emergence and decay of two-dimensional quantum turbulence.

Superconducting islands with semiconductor-nanowire-based topological Josephson junctions

Abstract:We theoretically study superconducting islands based on semiconductor-nanowire Josephson junctions and take into account the presence of subgap quasiparticle excitations in the spectrum of the junction. Our method extends the standard model Hamiltonian for a superconducting charge qubit and replaces the Josephson potential by the Bogoliubov--de Gennes Hamiltonian of the nanowire junction, projected onto the relevant low-energy subgap subspace. This allows to fully incorporate the coherent dynamics of subgap levels in the junction. The combined effect of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman energy in the nanowires forming the junction triggers a topological transition, where the subgap levels evolve from finite-energy Andreev bound states into near-zero energy Majorana bound states. The interplay between the microscopic energy scales governing the nanowire junction (the Josephson energy, the Majorana coupling and the Majorana energy splitting), with the charging energy of the superconducting island, gives rise to a great variety of physical regimes. Based on this interplay of different energy scales, we fully characterize the microwave response of the junction, from the Cooper pair box to the transmon regimes, and show how the presence of Majoranas can be detected through distinct spectroscopic features. In split-junction geometries, the plasma mode couples to the phase-dispersing subgap levels resulting from Majorana hybridization via a Jaynes--Cummings-like interaction. As a consequence of this interaction, higher order plasma excitations in the junction inherit Majorana properties, including the $4\pi$ effect.

Massive-vortex realization of a Bosonic Josephson Junction

Abstract:We study the mass exchange between two rotating, quantum massive vortices in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. The vortices, in the majority component, exhibit a filled core, where the in-filling minority component undergoes a quantum tunneling effect. Remarkably, we observe that the two-vortex system features stable Josephson oscillations, as well as all the nonlinear phenomena, including the macroscopic quantum self-trapping, that characterize a Bosonic Josephson Junction (BJJ). We propose an analytical model for describing the inter-vortex tunneling, obtained by implementing the a coherent-state representation of the two-mode Bose-Hubbard model. This allows us to give the explicit expression of the model's parameters in terms of the physical macroscopic parameters of the two-vortex system. The comparison of the dynamical scenario predicted by the model with that emerging from the Gross-Pitaevskii equations is very good for sufficiently small particle numbers, while at larger particle numbers it grows less precise, presumably due to the partial exclusion of the many-body interactions from our model. The definition of an effective self-interaction parameter allows us to include the many-body effects, thus restoring a quite good agreement with the numerical results. Interestingly, the recognition of the bosonic Josephson dynamics paves the way to the investigation of new dynamical behaviors in multi-vortex configurations.

Abstract:We give a general review of recent developments in the theory of vortices in superfluids and superconductors, discussing why the dynamics of vortices is important, and why some key results are still controversial. We discuss work that we have done on the dynamics of quantized vortices in a superfluid. Despite the fact that this problem has been recognized as important for forty years, there is still a lot of controversy about the forces on and masses of quantized vortices. We think that one can get unambiguous answers by considering a broken symmetry state that consists of one vortex in an infinite ideal system. We argue for a Magnus force that is proportional to the superfluid density, and we find that the effective mass density of a vortex in a neutral superfluid is divergent at low frequencies. We have generalized some of the results for a neutral superfluid to a charged system.
Zero magnetic-field orbital vortices in s-wave spin-singlet superconductors

Abstract:Breaking of time-reversal and point-group spatial symmetries can have a profound impact on superconductivity. One of the most extraordinary effects, due to the application of a magnetic field, is represented by the Abrikosov vortices with charged supercurrents circulating around their cores. Whether a similar phenomenon can be obtained by exploiting spatial symmetry breaking, e.g. through electric fields or mechanical strain, is a fundamentally relevant but not yet fully settled problem. Here, we show that in two-dimensional spin-singlet superconductors with unusually low degree of spatial symmetry content, vortices with supercurrents carrying angular momentum around the core can form and be energetically stable. The vortex has zero net magnetic flux since it is made up of counter-propagating Cooper pairs with opposite orbital moments. By solving self-consistently the Bogoliubov - de Gennes equations in real space, we demonstrate that the orbital vortex is stable and we unveil the spatial distribution of the superconducting order parameter around its core. The resulting amplitude has a characteristic pattern with a pronounced angular anisotropy that deviates from the profile of conventional magnetic vortices. These hallmarks guide predictions and proposals for the experimental detection.
