Abstract:Understanding the dynamics of bound state formation is one of the fundamental questions in confining quantum field theories such as Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). One hadronization mechanism that has garnered significant attention is the breaking of a string initially connecting a fermion and an anti-fermion. Deepening our understanding of real-time string-breaking dynamics with simpler, lower dimensional models like the Schwinger model can improve our understanding of the hadronization process in QCD and other confining systems found in condensed matter and statistical systems. In this paper, we consider the string-breaking dynamics within the Schwinger model and investigate its modification inside a thermal medium, treating the Schwinger model as an open quantum system coupled to a thermal environment. Within the regime of weak coupling between the system and environment, the real-time evolution of the system can be described by a Lindblad evolution equation. We analyze the Liouvillian gaps of this Lindblad equation and the time dependence of the system's von Neumann entropy. We observe that the late-time relaxation rate decreases as the environment correlation length increases. Moreover, when the environment correlation length is infinite, the system exhibits two steady states, one in each of the sectors with definite charge-conjugation-parity (CP) quantum numbers. For parameter regimes where an initial string breaks in vacuum, we observe a delay of the string breaking in the medium, due to kinetic dissipation effects. Conversely, in regimes where an initial string remains intact in vacuum time evolution, we observe string breaking (melting) in the thermal medium. We further discuss how the Liouvillian dynamics of the open Schwinger model can be simulated on quantum computers and provide an estimate of the associated Trotter errors.

Abstract:We study the stability of fluctuations around a homogeneous non-Abelian electric field background that is of a form that is protected from Schwinger pair production. Our analysis identifies the unstable modes and we find a limiting set of parameters for which there are no instabilities. Abstract:Electromagnetic plane waves provide examples of time-dependent open string backgrounds free of α' corrections. The solvable case of open strings in a quadrupolar wave front, analogous to pp-waves for closed strings, is discussed. In light-cone gauge, it leads to non-conformal boundary conditions similar to those induced by tachyon condensates. A maximum electric gradient is found, at which macroscopic strings with vanishing tension are pair-produced — a non-relativistic analogue of the Born-Infeld critical electric field. Kinetic instabilities of quadrupolar electric fields are cured by standard atomic physics techniques, and do not interfere with the former dynamic instability. A new example of non-conformal open-closed duality is found. Propagation of open strings in time-dependent wave fronts is discussed.

Abstract:We use the concept of quantum entanglement to analyze the Schwinger effect on an entangled state of a qubit and a bosonic mode coupled with the electric field. As a consequence of the Schwinger production of particle-antiparticle pairs, the electric field decreases both the correlation and the entanglement between the qubit and the particle mode. This work exposes a profound difference between bosons and fermions. In the bosonic case, entanglement between the qubit and the antiparticle mode cannot be caused by the Schwinger effect on the preexisting entanglement between the qubit and the particle mode, but correlation can.

Abstract:Z-strings in the Weinberg-Salam model including fermions are unstable for all values of the parameters. The cause of this instability is the fermion vacuum energy in the Z-string background. Z-strings with non-zero fermion densities, however, may still be stable.

An effective description of the instability of coherent states of gravitons in string theory

Abstract:We study the dynamics of a coherent state of closed type II string gravitons within the framework of the Steepest Entropy Ascent Quantum Thermodynamics, an effective model where the quantum evolution is driven by a maximal increase of entropy. We find that by perturbing the pure coherent state of gravitons by the presence of other coherent fields in the string spectrum, there exists conditions upon which the system undergoes decoherence by reaching thermodynamical equilibrium. Following the proposal by Dvali, et al., this suggests the instability of the classical dS space. We identify the time scale it takes the system to reach equilibrium consisting of a mixed state of fields in the string spectrum and compare it with the quantum-break time. Also we find that in such final state the quantum-break time seems to be larger than the classical break-time, in agreement with the Swampland conjectures about the dS solution in string theory.

Closed superstrings in magnetic field: instabilities and supersymmetry breaking

Abstract:We consider a 2-parameter class of solvable closed superstring models which `interpolate' between Kaluza-Klein and dilatonic Melvin magnetic flux tube backgrounds. The spectrum of string states has similarities with Landau spectrum for a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field. The presence of spin-dependent `gyromagnetic' interaction implies breaking of supersymmetry and possible existence (for certain values of magnetic parameters) of tachyonic instabilities. We study in detail the simplest example of the Kaluza-Klein Melvin model describing a superstring moving in flat but non-trivial 10-d space containing a 3-d factor which is a `twisted' product of a 2-plane and an internal circle. We also discuss the compact version of this model constructed by `twisting' the product of the two groups in SU(2) x U(1) WZNW theory without changing the local geometry (and thus the central charge). We explain how the supersymmetry is broken by continuous `magnetic' twist parameters and comment on possible implications for internal space compactification models. Abstract:In string theories, interactions are exponentially suppressed for trans-Planckian space-like external momenta. We study a class of quantum field theories that exhibit this feature modeled after Witten's bosonic open string field theory, and discover a Lorentz-invariant UV/IR relation that leads to the spacetime uncertainty principle proposed by Yoneya. Application to a dynamical black hole background suggests that Hawking radiation is turned off around the scrambling time.

Abstract:In first-quantized string theory, spacetime symmetries are described by inner automorphisms of the underlying conformal field theory. In this paper we use this approach to illustrate the Higgs effect in string theory. We consider string propagation on M^{24,1} \times S^1, where the circle has radius R, and study SU(2) symmetry breaking as R moves away from its critical value. We find a gauge-covariant equation of motion for the broken-symmetry gauge bosons and the would-be Goldstone bosons. We show that the Goldstone bosons can be eliminated by an appropriate gauge transformation. In this unitary gauge, the Goldstone bosons become the longitudinal components of massive gauge bosons.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum structure of Witten's cubic open bosonic string field theory by computing the one-loop contribution to the open string tadpole using both oscillator and conformal field theory methods. We find divergences and a breakdown of BRST invariance in the tadpole diagram arising from tachyonic and massless closed string states, and we discuss ways of treating these problems. For a Dp-brane with sufficiently many transverse dimensions, the tadpole can be rendered finite by analytically continuing the closed string tachyon by hand; this diagram then naturally incorporates the (linearized) shift of the closed string background due to the presence of the brane. We observe that divergences at higher loops will doom any straightforward attempt at analyzing general quantum effects in bosonic open string field theory on a Dp-brane of any dimension, but our analysis does not uncover any potential obstacles to the existence of a sensible quantum open string field theory in the supersymmetric case.

Abstract:We study the Euclidean effective action and the full fermion propagator for a Dirac field in the presence of a scalar field with a domain wall defect, in 2+1 dimensions. We include quantum effects due to both fermion and scalar field fluctuations, in a one-loop approximation. The results are interpreted in terms of the quantum stability of the zero mode solution. We also study, for this system, the induced `inertial' electric field for the fermions on the defect, due to the quantum fluctuations of the scalar field.

Abstract:In this research, we focus on investigating the behavior of zero-spin scalar boson-antiboson particles in a specific space-time of -dimensional circularly symmetric and static traversable wormhole with cosmic strings, all under the influence of a quantum flux field. We start by deriving the wave equation from the Klein–Gordon equation, which governs the relativistic quantum motion of scalar bosons-antibosons. By solving this equation using the confluent Heun equation, we obtain the ground state energy level and the corresponding wave function as a particular case. The main findings of this study indicate that various factors, such as the presence of cosmic strings, the radius of the wormhole throat, and the quantum flux, have significant impacts on the behavior of scalar bosons-antibosons.

Abstract:We study quantum effect on chiral and $U_A(1)$ symmetry breaking in external electromagnetic fields in the frame of equal-time kinetic theory. We derive the transport and constraint equations for the spin and isospin components of the quark Wigner function in a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. By taking semi-classical expansion of the equations, we obtain the chiral condensate at classical level and neutral pion condensate at the first order in $hbar$. As an example of off-shell effect, there exist strong quantum oscillations induced by multi couplings among the spin and isospin components.

Abstract:In this paper we study the dynamics of a statistical ensemble of strings, building on a recently proposed gauge theory of the string geodesic field. We show that this stochastic approach is equivalent to the Carathéodory formulation of the Nambu-Goto action, supplemented by an averaging procedure over the family of classical string world-sheets which are solutions of the equation of motion. In this new framework, the string geodesic field is reinterpreted as the Gibbs current density associated with the string statistical ensemble. Next, we show that the classical field equations derived from the string gauge action, can be obtained as the semi-classical limit of the string functional wave equation. For closed strings, the wave equation itself is completely analogous to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation used in quantum cosmology. Thus, in the string case, the wave function has support on the space of all possible spatial loop configurations. Finally, we show that the string distribution induces a multi-phase, or {\it cellular} structure on the spacetime manifold characterized by domains with a purely Riemannian geometry separated by domain walls over which there exists a predominantly Weyl geometry.

Abstract:We consider the behavior of open strings on AdS wormholes in Gauss-Bonnet theory, which are the Gauss-Bonnet gravity duals of a pair of field theories. A string with both endpoints on the same side of the wormhole describes two charges within the same field theory, which exhibit Coulomb interaction for small separation. On the other hand, a string extending through the wormhole describes two charges which live in different field theories, and they exhibit a spring-like confining potential. A transition occurs when there is a pair of charges present within each field theory: for small separation each pair of charges exhibits Coulomb interaction, while for large separation the charges in the different field theories pair up and exhibit confinement. If two charges move faster than a critical speed, then they exhibit a separation gap and energy is transferred from the leading charge to the lagging one.

Abstract:We revisit the study of string theory close to the Hagedorn temperature with the aim towards cosmological applications. We consider interactions of open and closed strings in a gas of D$p-$branes, and/or one isolated D$p$-brane, in an arbitrary number $d$ of flat non-compact dimensions and general compact dimensions. Leading order string perturbation theory is used to obtain the basic interaction rates in a flat background, which are shown to be consistent with the random walk picture of highly excited strings that should apply in more general backgrounds. Using the random walk interpretation we infer the structure of more general semi-inclusive string scattering rates and then write down the corresponding Boltzmann equations describing ensembles of highly excited closed and open strings. We organise the interaction terms in Boltzmann equations so that detailed balance becomes manifest. We obtain the equilibrium solutions and show that they reduce to previously computed solutions for $d=0$. We further study the behaviour of non-equlibrium fluctuations and find explicit analytic expressions for the equilibration rates (and for the number of open strings in $d=0$). Potential implications for an early universe with strings at high temperatures are outlined.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the effects of higher derivative corrections and string cloud on holographic Schwinger effect in confined and deconfined phase. We consider the Einstein gravity with string cloud and Gauss-Bonnet term. From the results, we find higher derivative corrections and string cloud decreases the potential barrier and critical electric field. Thus higher derivative corrections and string cloud favor the production of particle pairs and enhance the Schwinger effect in confined and deconfined phase. The temperature reduces critical electric field and enhance the Schwinger effect.

Abstract:We argue that on-shell excitations with large negative energies are created rapidly when the string coupling increases with time. This does not indicate an inconsistency in string theory since the negative energy on-shell excitation is always entangled with an on-shell excitation with a positive energy. The total energy of this energy-EPR state vanishes. We discuss the reason the energy-EPR states appear in string theory and the role they might play in black hole physics.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce and numerically simulate a quantum field theoretic phenomenon called the gauge ``slingshot" effect and study its production of gravitational waves. The effect occurs when a source, such as a magnetic monopole or a quark, crosses the boundary between the Coulomb and confining phases. The corresponding gauge field of the source, either electric or magnetic, gets confined into a flux tube stretching in the form of a string (cosmic or a QCD type) that attaches the source to the domain wall separating the two phases. The string tension accelerates the source towards the wall as sort of a slingshot. The slingshot phenomenon is also exhibited by various sources of other co-dimensionality, such as cosmic strings confined by domain walls or vortices confined by $Z_2$ strings. Apart from the field-theoretic value, the slingshot effect has important cosmological implications, as it provides a distinct source for gravitational waves. The effect is expected to be generic in various extensions of the standard model such as grand unification.
