Abstract:It appears to be difficult within string theory to obtain genuine scale separation between spacetime and the internal sector. In this paper, we propose a novel mechanism for scale-separated vacua which hinges on stringy effects that are invisible at the level of effective field theory. We show that (meta)stable vacua can form if a super no-scale one-loop potential combines with generic two-loop contributions to the vacuum energy, in a manner analogous to Banks-Zaks fixed points. Weak string coupling and scale separation arise from the accidental smallness of the one-loop term, which receives contributions only from massive states, relative to the two-loop term. We provide a proof of concept of this mechanism in explicit non-supersymmetric heterotic toroidal orbifolds by balancing the complete one-loop contribution against the estimated two-loop term and numerically minimizing the resulting effective potential in a restricted sector of moduli space. We note that this mechanism is generically possible within any fundamental theory that has a one-loop energy that gets contributions only from massive modes.

Abstract:We examine neutrino zeromode solutions on the electroweak $Z$-string and their effect on the stability of the string in the standard model and its extensions. We propose using topological invariants constructed from the momentum (and real) space topology of Green's functions, often used for investigating edge modes in condensed matter physics. We analyze the standard model and then examine type-I and type-II extensions of the neutrino sector as well as their hybrid. Based on this analysis, we also comment on proposals in the literature to stabilize the $Z$-string.

Abstract:Generically, string models with $N=1$ supersymmetry are not expected to have moduli beyond perturbation theory; stringy non-perturbative effects as well as low energy field-theoretic phenomena such as gluino condensation will lift any flat directions. In this note, we describe models where some subspace of the moduli space survives non-perturbatively. Discrete $R$ symmetries forbid any inherently stringy effects, and dynamical considerations control the field-theoretic effects. The surviving subspace is a space of high symmetry; the system is attracted to this subspace by a potential which we compute. Models of this type may be useful for considerations of duality and raise troubling cosmological questions about string theory. Our considerations also suggest a mechanism for fixing the expectation value of the dilaton.

Abstract:We argue that the existence of the electroweak monopole predicts the existence of the electroweak string in the standard model made of monopole-antimonopole pair separated infinitely apart, which carry the quantized magnetic flux $4 \pi n/e$. We show how to construct such quantized magnetic flux string solution. Our result strongly indicates that genuine fundamental electromagnetic string could exist in nature which could actually be detected. We discuss the physical implications of our result in cosmology.

Abstract:We show that the sphaleron energy which identifies with the (instanton) potential barrier for B-violation is reduced in the presence (background) of an electroweak Z-string. We also show that for large enough Higgs coupling, $\lambda$, the sphaleron energy can go negative. For such $\lambda$, electroweak Z-strings can reduce their energy by accumulating sphaleron bound states. This further endows them with baryon number. Given our approximation, the value of $\lambda$ at which this occurs is rather large to be realistic for the standard electroweak model.

Abstract:We construct $\mathbb{Z}_N$ orbifolds of the ten-dimensional heterotic string theories appropriate for implementing the stringy replica method for the calculation of quantum entanglement entropy. A novel feature for the heterotic string is that the gauge symmetry must be broken by a Wilson line to ensure modular invariance. We completely classify the patterns of symmetry breaking. We show that the tachyonic contributions in all cases can be analytically continued, with a finite answer in the domain $0<N \leq 1$, relevant for calculating entanglement entropy across the Rindler horizon. We discuss the physical implications of our results.

Abstract:We study vortex-strings in four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric SU(Nc)xU(1) gauge theories with Nf hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of SU(Nc) and general U(1) charges. If Nf>Nc, the vacuum is not gapped and the low-energy theory contains both the vacuum massless excitations and the string zero-modes. The question we address in this work is whether the vacuum and the string moduli decouple at low energies, allowing a description of the low-energy dynamics in terms of a two-dimensional theory on the string worldsheet. We find a simple condition controlling the bulk-string coupling: If there exist two flavors such that the product of their U(1) charge difference with the magnetic flux carried by the string configuration is not an integer multiple of 2\pi, the string has zero-modes that decay slower than 1/r, where r is the radial distance from the string core. These modes are coupled to the vacuum massless excitations even at low energies. If, however, all such products are integer multiples of 2\pi, long-range modes of this type do not exist and the string moduli decouple from the bulk at low energies. This condition turns out to coincide with the condition of trivial Aharonov-Bohm phases for the particles in the spectrum. In addition to a derivation of the bulk-string decoupling criterion using classical analysis of the string zero-modes, we provide a non-perturbative derivation of the criterion, which uses supersymmetric localization techniques.

Abstract:We revisit the canonical quantization of free bosonic closed string theory and observe that the physicality of states requires vanishing of the worldsheet Virasoro algebra generators sandwiched between any two physical states. This requirement yields four classes of physical states, depending on discrete worldsheet symmetries: parity and time reversal. The usual string states which are highest weight states of the Virasoro algebra, preserve both, while the other new three classes break one or both. We apply our formulation to an accelerated worldsheet with horizons, initiating the worldsheet formulation of a thermal string theory and strings probing horizon of black holes.

Abstract:We review that in perturbative string theory, flat, homogeneous and isotropic cosmological evolutions found in no-scale models at the quantum level can enter into "quantum no-scale regimes" (QNSRs). When this is the case, the quantum effective potential is dominated by the classical kinetic energies of the no-scale modulus, dilaton and moduli not involved in the supersymmetry breaking. As a result, the evolutions approach the classical ones, where the no-scale structure is exact. When the 1-loop potential is positive, a global attractor mechanism forces the initially expanding solutions to enter the QNSR describing a flat, ever-expanding universe. On the contrary, when the potential can reach negative values, the internal moduli induce in most cases some kind of instability of the growing universe. The latter stops expanding and eventually collapses, unless the initial conditions are tuned in a tiny region of the phase space. Finally, in QNSR, no gauge instability takes place, regardless of the details of the potential.

Quantum Energy Density of Cosmic Strings with Nonzero Radius

Abstract:Zero-point fluctuations in the background of a cosmic string provide an opportunity to study the effects of topology in quantum field theory. We use a scattering theory approach to compute quantum corrections to the energy density of a cosmic string, using the "ballpoint pen" and "flowerpot" models to allow for a nonzero string radius. For computational efficiency, we consider a massless field in $2+1$ dimensions. We show how to implement precise and unambiguous renormalization conditions in the presence of a deficit angle, and make use of Kontorovich-Lebedev techniques to rewrite the sum over angular momentum channels as an integral on the imaginary axis.

From Black Strings to Fundamental Strings: Non-uniformity and Phase Transitions

Abstract:We discuss the transition between black strings and fundamental strings in the presence of a compact dimension, $\mathbb{S}^1_z$. In particular, we study the Horowitz-Polchinski effective field theory in $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{S}^1_z$, with a reduction on the Euclidean time circle $\mathbb{S}_\tau^1$. The classical solution of this theory describes a bound state of self-gravitating strings, known as a ``string star'', in Lorentzian spacetime. By analyzing non-uniform perturbations to the uniform solution, we identify the critical mass at which the string star becomes unstable towards non-uniformity along the spatial circle (i.e., Gregory-Laflamme instability) and determine the order of the associated phase transition. For $3\le d<4$, we argue that at the critical mass, the uniform string star can transition into a localized black hole. More generally, we describe the sequence of transitions from a large uniform black string as its mass decreases, depending on the number of dimensions $d$. Additionally, using the $SL(2)_k/U(1)$ model in string theory, we show that for sufficiently large $d$, the uniform black string is stable against non-uniformity before transitioning into fundamental strings. We also present a novel solution that exhibits double winding symmetry breaking in the asymptotically $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{S}^1_\tau\times\mathbb{S}^1_z$ Euclidean spacetime.

Towards a Stringy Description for the $Q\bar Q q\bar q$-Quark System

Abstract:For the case of two light flavors we propose the stringy description of the system made of one heavy and one light quark-antiquark pair, with the aim of exploring the two lower-lying Born-Oppenheimer potentials as a function of a separation of the heavy quark-antiquark pair. Our analysis reveals three critical separations related to the processes of string reconnection, breaking and junction annihilation. In particular, for the ground state potential only the process of string reconnection matters. We find that a tetraquark state makes the dominant contribution to the potential of the first excited state at small separations, and this is the big difference with the $QQ\bar q\bar q$-quark system where it does so to the ground state potential. Another big difference is the emergence of the full diquark picture $[Qq][\bar Q\bar q]$ rather than the partial picture $QQ[\bar q\bar q]$ for the tetraquark state. On the other hand, the scales of string junction annihilation, below which the systems can be thought of mainly as the compact tetraquarks, are very close for both cases and become almost the same if the phenomenological rule $E_{QQ}=\frac{1}{2} E_{Q\bar Q}$ holds. The same is also true for the screening lengths whose values are in agreement with lattice QCD.

An algebraic approach to intertwined quantum phase transitions in the Zr isotopes

Abstract:The algebraic framework of the interacting boson model with configuration mixing is employed to demonstrate the occurrence of intertwined quantum phase transitions (IQPTs) in the $_{40}$Zr isotopes with neutron number 52-70. The detailed quantum and classical analyses reveal a QPT of crossing normal and intruder configurations superimposed on a QPT of the intruder configuration from U(5) to SU(3) and a crossover from SU(3) to SO(6) dynamical symmetries.

Observation of string-breaking dynamics in a quantum simulator

Abstract:Spontaneous particle-pair formation is a fundamental phenomenon in nature. It can, for example, appear when the potential energy between two particles increases with separation, as if they were connected by a tense string. Beyond a critical separation, new particle pairs can form, causing the string to break. String-breaking dynamics in quantum chromodynamics play a vital role in high-energy particle collisions and early universe evolution. Simulating string evolution and hadron formation is, therefore, a grand challenge in modern physics. Quantum simulators, well-suited for studying dynamics, are expected to outperform classical computing methods. However, the required experimental capabilities to simulate string-breaking dynamics have not yet been demonstrated, even for simpler models of the strong force. We experimentally probe, for the first time, the spatiotemporal dynamics of string-breaking in a (1+1)-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory using a fully programmable trapped-ion quantum simulator. We emulate external static charges and strings via site-dependent magnetic-field control enabled by a dual array of tightly focused laser beams targeting individual ions. First, we study how confinement affects isolated charges, finding that they freely spread without string tension but exhibit localized oscillations when tension is increased. Then, we observe and characterize string-breaking dynamics of a string stretched between two static charges after an abrupt increase in string tension. Charge pairs appear near the string edges and spread into the bulk, revealing a route to dynamical string-breaking distinct from the conventional Schwinger mechanism. Our work demonstrates that analog quantum simulators have achieved the necessary control to explore string-breaking dynamics, which may ultimately be relevant to nuclear and high-energy physics.

Quantum no-scale regimes in string theory

Abstract:We show that in generic no-scale models in string theory, the flat, expanding cosmological evolutions found at the quantum level can be attracted to a "quantum no-scale regime", where the no-scale structure is restored asymptotically. In this regime, the quantum effective potential is dominated by the classical kinetic energies of the no-scale modulus and dilaton. We find that this natural preservation of the classical no-scale structure at the quantum level occurs when the initial conditions of the evolutions sit in a subcritical region of their space. On the contrary, supercritical initial conditions yield solutions that have no analogue at the classical level. The associated intrinsically quantum universes are sentenced to collapse and their histories last finite cosmic times. Our analysis is done at 1-loop, in perturbative heterotic string compactified on tori, with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking implemented by a stringy version of the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism.

On the quantization of folded strings in non-critical dimensions

Abstract:Classical rotating closed string are folded strings. At the folding points the scalar curvature associated with the induced metric diverges. As a consequence one cannot properly quantize the fluctuations around the classical solution since there is no complete set of normalizable eigenmodes. Furthermore in the non-critical effective string action of Polchinski and Strominger, there is a divergence associated with the folds. We overcome this obstacle by putting a massive particle at each folding point which can be used as a regulator. Using this method we compute the spectrum of quantum fluctuations around the rotating string and the intercept of the leading Regge trajectory. The results we find are that the intercepts are $a=1$ and $a=2$ for the open and closed string respectively, independent of the target space dimension. We argue that in generic theories with an effective string description, one can expect corrections from finite masses associated with either the endpoints of an open string or the folding points on a closed string. We compute explicitly the corrections in the presence of these masses.
