Abstract:In the tight-binding approximation, we have investigated the behaviour of persistent currents in a one-dimensional Thue-Morse mesoscopic ring threaded by a magnetic flux. By applying a transfer-matrix technique, the energy spectra and the persistent currents in the system have been numerically calculated. It is shown that the flux-dependent eigenenergies form “band” structures and the energy gaps will enlarge if the site energy increases. Actually, the site energy and the filling-up number of electrons are two important factors which have much influence upon the persistent current. Increment of the site energy in the system will lead to a dramatic suppression of the currents. When the highest-occupied energy level is on the top of the band, the total current is limited; otherwise, the persistent current increases by several orders of magnitude. Generally, this kind of large scale change in the magnitude of the current can easily be observed in the vicinity of band gaps. The parity effect in the Thue-Morse ring is also discussed.

Abstract:We report the solution of the persistent current in two coupled rings in the presence of external magnetic fluxes. We showed that the magnetic fluxes modify the global phase of the electronic wave function for multiple connected geometry formed by the coupled rings. We obtained an exact solution for the persistent current and investigated the exact solution numerically. For two large coupled rings with equal fluxes, we found that the persistent current in the two coupled rings is in fact equal to that in a single ring. This theory explains the experimental results observed in a line of sixteen coupled rings. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 3124 (2001).)

Abstract:A simple model for an electron moving in a disordered one-dimensional system is investigated analytically and the persistent current in this model of a disordered mesoscopic system is studied. We show that persistent currents decrease exponentially with increasing sample circumference. Our analysis is based on comparison with an exact calculation of the average resistance of a disordered one-dimensional chain.

Abstract:We have analysed the nature of persistent currents in open coupled mesoscopic rings. Our system is comprised of two ideal loops connected to an electron reservoir. We have obtained analytical expressions for the persistent current densities in two rings in the presence of a magnetic field. We show that the known even-odd parity effects in isolated single loops have to be generalised for the case of coupled rings. We also show that when the two rings have unequal circumferences, it is possible to observe opposite currents (diamagnetic or paramagnetic) in the two rings for a given Fermi level.

Abstract:A simplest model of the persistent current in presence of many-body interaction in a mesoscopic ring is presented. The Bethe ansatz approach is used to find exact solutions. Both cases in the absence of impurity and in the presence of impurity are solved and compared. It is indicated that both impurity and hard-core interaction do not affect the result of persistent current explicitly if there is a large number of electrons in the ring.
Persistent current and low-field magnetic susceptibility in one-dimensional mesoscopic rings: Effect of long-range hopping

Abstract:Persistent current and low-field magnetic susceptibility in single-channel normal metal rings threaded by a magnetic flux $\phi$ are investigated within the tight-binding framework considering long-range hopping of electrons in the {\em shortest} path. The higher order hopping integrals try to reduce the effect of disorder by delocalizing the energy eigenstates, and accordingly, current amplitude in disordered rings becomes comparable to that of an ordered ring. Our study of low-field magnetic susceptibility predicts that the sign of persistent currents can be mentioned precisely in mesoscopic rings with fixed number of electrons, even in the presence of impurity in the rings. For perfect rings, low-field current shows only the diamagnetic sign irrespective of the total number of electrons $N_e$. On the other hand, in disordered rings it exhibits the diamagnetic and paramagnetic natures for the rings with odd and even $N_e$ respectively.

Abstract:Using a modified spin-wave approach, we show that in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field or an in plane inhomogeneous electric field a mesoscopic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ring with integer spin (i.e., a Haldane gap system) exhibits a persistent circulating spin current. Due to quantum fluctuations the current has a finite limit on the order of -g mu_B c/L at zero temperature, provided the staggered correlation length xi exceeds the circumference L of the ring, in close analogy to ballistic charge currents in mesoscopic normal metal rings. Here c is the spin-wave velocity, g is the gyromagnetic ratio and mu_B is the Bohr magneton. For xi<<L the current is exponentially suppressed.

Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional mesoscopic quantum ring filled with spinless electrons and threaded by a magnetic flux, which carries a persistent current at zero temperature. The interplay of Coulomb interactions and a single on-site impurity yields a non-trivial dependence of the persistent current on the size of the ring. We determine numerically the asymptotic power law for systems up to 32000 sites for various impurity strengths and compare with predictions from Bethe Ansatz solutions combined with Bosonization. The numerical results are obtained using an improved functional renormalization group (fRG) method. We apply the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalization methods to benchmark the fRG calculations. We use DMRG to study the persistent current at low electron concentrations in order to extend the validity of our results to quasi-continuous systems. We briefly comment on the quality of calculated fRG ground state energies by comparison with exact DMRG data.

Abstract:The persistent current in an ensemble of normal-metal rings shows Gaussian distributed sample-to-sample fluctuations with non-Gaussian corrections, which are precursors of the transition into the Anderson localized regime. We here report a calculation of the leading non-Gaussian correction to the current autocorrelation function, which is of third order in the current. Although the third-order correlation function is small, inversely proportional to the dimensionless conductance $g$ of the ring, the mere fact that it is nonzero is remarkable, since it is an odd moment of the current distribution.

Abstract:Using a semiclassical approach, we study the persistent magnetization current of a mesoscopic ferrimagnetic ring in a nonuniform magnetic field. At zero temperature, there exists persistent spin current because of the quantum fluctuation of magnons, similar to the case of an antiferromagnetic spin ring. At low temperature, the current shows activation behavior because of the field-induced gap. At higher temperature, the magnitude of the spin current is proportional to temperature T, similar to the reported result of a ferromagnetic spin ring.

Abstract:The influence of the electron-magnon and the electron-phonon interactions on the persistent current in a one-dimensional mesoscopic ring is studied. We show that, due to the electron-magnon interaction, the amplitude of the persistent current is exponentially reduced compared to the free case. Two features occur in the presence of an electron-phonon interaction. For the normal state of electrons, the persistent current is weakened by the Debye-Waller factor. Considering the so-called Peierls distortions, we show that the effect of the Peierls instability on the amplitude of the persistent current (i.e., the oscillation with respect to the flux) is suppressed significantly and the persistent current will be practically undetectable in the case of a wide-gap Peierls material. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract:We propose an effective description of the interaction between the nearest-neighboring particles in a continuum theory. The contributions of the electron-electron interaction to the persistent current in 1D strongly correlating mesoscopic rings with or without impurities are analyzed. It is shown that the nearest-neighborhood int eraction gives significant contributions to the current and correlation functions. The enhance of the theoretical value of current magnitude is observed at finite temperature in the presence of the impurity scattering. The statistical property of the persistent current over random impurity distribution is also discussed. It is found that the exponential law of the persistent current for a non-interacting system will remain in an interacting one, as long as the interactions between nonnearest-neighborhoods are excluded.

Abstract:We investigate electronic delocalization and magnetic-flux-induced persistent current in the mesoscopic ring, which is constructed according to the nonsymmetric-dimer (NSD) model. The flux-dependent energy spectra, electronic wavefunctions, and persistent currents are theoretically obtained. It is demonstrated that due to the localization-delocalization transition of electrons, the electronic state in the NSD ring can be localized, extended, and the intermediate case between extended states and localized ones. The persistent current (PC) approaches the behavior of free electrons if the Fermi level is around the near-resonant energy. Otherwise, the PC is depressed dramatically. This conclusion could be generalized to other correlated-disordered systems.

Abstract:Under the tight-binding approximation, we study the persistent current (PC) in the magnetic-flux-threaded mesoscopic ring which is constructed according to the Fibonacci-class model. It is shown that the energy spectra form band structures and the subbands present a self-similarity. The PC is determined by the magnetic flux, the site energy, and the Fermi level. It is found that the large PC can be observed if the Fermi level reaches a specific value. Our investigation provides detailed information on the structural influence on the PC and contributes a mechanism to understand the large PC observed in the experiments.

Abstract:We investigate magnetic-flux-induced persistent currents (PCs) in a one-dimensional nonlinear mesoscopic ring based on the Frenkel–Kontorova (FK) model. By applying a transfer-matrix technique, the energy spectra, the PCs, and the Thouless exponent are theoretically obtained. It is shown that the energy spectrum splits into sub-bands when the on-site energy is gradually increased, and in the flux-dependent energy spectra, the energy levels show different behaviors over the transition by breaking of analyticity. Meanwhile, the PC is determined by the magnetic flux, the on-site energy, and the Fermi level. The increment of the on-site energy leads to a dramatic suppression of the PC. When the Fermi level is in the vicinity of “band” gaps, the PC is limited considerably; otherwise, the PC increases by several orders of magnitude. The suppressed PC is related to the electronic localization of the FK ring, which is described by the Thouless exponents. Our investigations provide detailed information about the influence of nonlinear structure on the PC and contribute to its potential application in quantum devices.

Abstract:We have studied, in the framework of the two-band lattice model, the persistent current in a one-dimensional mesoscopic semiconductor ring threaded by a flux phi, taking into consideration the electron-phonon interaction at absolute zero temperature. The current is a continuous function and periodic in phi, with a flux quantum phi(0), without jumps occurring when each period is over. The interband coupling enhances the current while the electron-phonon interaction suppresses it.

Abstract:Recent differential measurements of elliptic flow are used to probe several hydrodynamic scaling predictions. Eccentricity scaling is observed for Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=~200$ GeV, suggesting essentially complete thermalization of the high energy density matter produced in these collisions. An estimate of the speed of sound is also obtained from the eccentricity scaled elliptic flow. The predicted mass scaling is observed for particles with transverse kinetic energy KE$_T$ up to $\sim 1$ GeV. For KE$_T$ values above $\sim 1$ GeV, valence quark number scaling compatible with partonic degrees of freedom is observed.

Abstract:We thoroughly study the persistent current of noninteracting electrons in one, two, and three dimensional thin rings. We find that the results for noninteracting electrons are more relevant for individual mesoscopic rings than hitherto appreciated. The current is averaged over all configurations of the disorder, whose amount is varied from zero up to the diffusive limit, keeping the product of the Fermi wave number and the ring's circumference constant. Results are given as functions of disorder and aspect ratios of the ring. The magnitude of the disorder-averaged current may be larger than the root-mean-square fluctuations of the current from sample to sample even when the mean free path is smaller, but not too small, than the circumference of the ring. Then a measurement of the persistent current of a typical sample will be dominated by the magnitude of the disorder averaged current.

Abstract:We investigate the ground state persistent spin current and the pair entanglement in one-dimensional antiferromagnetic anisotropic Heisenberg ring with twisted boundary conditions. Solving Bethe ansatz equations numerically, we calculate the dependence of the ground state energy on the total magnetic flux through the ring, and the resulting persistent current. Motivated by recent development of quantum entanglement theory, we study the properties of the ground state concurrence under the influence of the flux through the anisotropic Heisenberg ring. We also include an external magnetic field and discuss the properties of the persistent current and the concurrence in the presence of the magnetic field.
