Abstract:A ruthenium(II)‐catalyzed Michael addition of N‐acyl pyrroles to α,β‐unsaturated ketones has been developed by using a C−H activation strategy. The key to this selective reaction is to use an acyl group as an effective chelating group. The use of AgOTf remarkably promoted the protonolysis process and thereby facilitated the Michael addition reaction. Monoalkylated pyrroles could be selectively synthesized by controlling the ratio of α,β‐unsaturated ketones to N‐acyl pyrroles.

Abstract:Here, we reported for the first time a mechanistically distinctive cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type sequential semihydrogenation/hydrohydrazidation of aliphatic terminal alkynes in one pot. A cobalt hydride species was employed as two roles for both a unique metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type insertion of the aliphatic terminal alkynes and then metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer of alkenes. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and step economy. The hydrazone products could be easily transferred to various valuable amine derivatives.

Abstract:Ruthenium-catalyzed oxidation of multisubstituted allyl alcohols in the presence of benzaldehyde gives enals or enones in good yields. Unlike the commonly reported ruthenium-catalyzed isomerization reaction of allyl alcohols to give saturated ketones, an intermolecular rather than intramolecular hydrogen transfer is involved in this transformation. This reaction offers an efficient, mild, and high-yielding method for the preparation of substituted α,β-unsaturated compounds.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:The first example of meta-selective CAr-H bond functionalization of aryl 2-pyridyl ketones has been developed using [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 as the catalyst and alkyl bromide as the coupling reagent. This development provides an efficient strategy for modifying the meta-position of aryl 2-pyridyl ketone skeletons, which are found in various functional molecules.

Abstract:A ruthenium‐catalyzed C(sp2)–H acyloxylation of 2‐aroyl pyridine derivatives with simple sodium carboxylate utilizing transformable directing groups is described. This protocol features broad functional group tolerance and chemo‐ and regio‐selectivity, providing the acyloxylation products in 45%‐84%yield. Furthermore, the synthetic utility of this protocol was demonstrated by the late‐stage functionalization of pharmaceutical compounds. Notably, the acyloxylation products could be further transformed into a variety of useful heterocycles under mild conditions.

Abstract:Described herein is the synthesis of 2-pyrazolines via acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of allylic alcohols with hydrazines based on a Ru(3)(CO)(12)/NHC-phosphine-phosphine ligand L catalytic system. The reaction not only exhibits low catalyst loading (only 0.3 mol %), wide substrate scope, good to excellent yields, and high selectivity but also omits the use of sacrificial hydrogen acceptor with only H(2) and H(2)O as byproducts, making the reaction green and atom-economical.

Abstract:The allylation of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and malononitrile with aliphatic allylic substrates is achieved under mild conditions in the presence of new ruthenium catalysts. The ruthenium complex [Ru(C5Me5)(2-quinolinecarboxylato)(CH2CHCH-n-Pr)] [BF4] as a precatalyst, allows the synthesis of mono-allylated branched derivatives. On the other hand, the parent complex [Ru(C5Me5)(MeCN)(3)] [PF6] as a precatalyst, straightforwardly favours the bis-allylation of the procarbonucleophiles leading to bis-allylated bislinear products. The involvement of the two precatalysts provides a sequential synthesis of unsymmetrical mixed linear-branched bis-allylated derivatives.

Abstract:While classical cross-couplings are dominated by palladium and nickel catalysts, cobalt-based catalysts have shown unique advantages for such cross-coupling reactions in terms of higher catalytic activity and lower toxicity. Herein, we describe a novel cobalt-catalyzed alkyl–alkyl cross-coupling reaction of hydrazone with alkyl halides under mild reaction conditions, where the use of a PNP-type pincer ligand is essential for catalysis. Both aldehyde and ketone hydrazones are compatible with this reaction, giving a series of C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) coupling products in moderate to good yields.

Abstract:Three bidentate ruthenium(II) complexes with a pyridonate fragment were prepared and fully characterized. These complexes are structurally similar, but differ in their pendant substituents. Complex 1 contains a phenyl unit, whereas complexes 2 and 3 have uncoordinated thienyl and thiazolyl groups, respectively. These complexes were tested as catalysts for β-alkylation of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols, and 3 shows the highest activity, suggesting the thiazolyl ring participates in the catalytic process. Furthermore, 3 is an excellent catalyst for α-alkylation of ketones with primary alcohols. Various α-alkylated ketones were synthesized in high yields, by using 0.05 mol % 3 and 0.25 equiv of t-BuOK within 30 min.

Abstract:The first example of transition-metal-catalyzed ortho/meta-selective dual C-H functionalizations of arenes in one reaction is described. In this transformation, ortho-C-H chlorination and meta-C-H sulfonation of 2-phenoxypyri(mi)dines were achieved simultaneously under catalysis by [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2. The other reactant, namely, an arylsulfonyl chloride, played the role of both a sulfonation and chlorination reagent. More importantly, the arylsulfonyl chloride was also an oxidant in the process. Mechanistic studies indicated that six-membered ruthenacycles were the key intermediate in the reaction.

Abstract:A versatile, selective, solvent (methanol vs ethanol)- and base (potassium vs lithium carbonate)-assisted switchable synthesis of saturated ketone and α-methyl saturated ketone from α,β-unsaturated ketone is developed. Mechanistic aspects, evaluated from spectroscopic studies, in situ monitoring of the reaction progress, control studies, and labeling studies, further indicate the involvement of a tandem dehydrogenation-condensation-hydrogenation sequence in the reaction, in which the interconvertible coordination mode (imino N → Ru and amido N-Ru) of coordinated imidazole with Ru(II)-para-cymene is crucial, without which the efficiency and selectivity of the catalyst are completely lost. The catalyst demonstrates good efficiency, selectivity, and functional group tolerance and displays a broad scope (69 examples) for monomethylation and hydrogenation of unsaturated chalcones, double methylation of ketones, and N-methylation of amines.

Abstract:A ruthenium-catalyzed switchable N-H/C-H alkenylation reaction of 6-phenyl-(dihydro) pyridazin-3(2H)-ones triggered by a nitrogen/oxygen atmosphere was developed. To achieve switchable modification of the two important sites of the widely used pharmacophore, a simple and efficient procedure containing two optimized ruthenium catalytic systems was utilized, which afforded excellent activity, high selectivity, and good tolerance of a wide range of functional groups.

Abstract:Two new [12]metallacrown-6 compounds, [M(II)(6)(SMe)(12)] [M = Ru (1), Zn (2)], were constructed from a dimethyl sulfoxide decomposed methylthiol product to doubly bridged metal centers. The Ru(II) compound can prompt alkenylation reactions of phenylpyridines with alkynes to generate monoalkenylated arylpyridines in moderate yields with high regioselectivity and stereoselectivity.

Abstract:The synthesis of quinolines from alcohols and 2‐nitrobenzaldehydes is described. Unreactive alcohols and 2‐nitrobenzaldehydes were concurrently converted to the reactive reactants for a Friedländer annulation via a hydrogen transfer. Tris(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium(II) dichloride [Ru(PPh3)3Cl2] appeared to serve the dual role of an efficient hydrogen transfer catalyst and a suitable Friedländer annulation catalyst.

Abstract:This report describes the Ru(II)-catalyzed C-H allylation of N,N-dialkyl thiobenzamides with allyl carbonate. The reaction is carried out using [RuCl2(p-cym)]2 in the presence of Cu(OAc)2 and Ag2O. This method represents the first example of Ru-catalyzed C-H allylation directed by sulfur-containing groups. As a further advantage, the method is performed in sustainable and eco-friendly MeCN as a solvent.
