Abstract:The development of redox flow batteries presents challenges in terms of scale-up, optimization, improvements in electrolyte stability, and the development of new materials [1]. These challenges can be tackled using a combination of laboratory analysis and modelling, which lowers the financial costs and timescales. Modelling of the cells can provide insights into the coupled physico-chemical processes, including heat and mass transfer, the redox reactions, charge transfer and any phase changes, all of which are difficult to quantify experimentally. For design and optimization, an accurate model can be invaluable.

Abstract:Thermogalvanic cell also named as thermocell is a new type of technology converting low-grade thermal energy to electricity. In this study, we establish an one-dimensional model of a Fe(CN)63-/4- concentric annulus thermocell and evaluate the influence of electrode spacing and cell direction on the cell performance. Results indicate the ratio of electrolyte thermal resistance to total thermal resistance plays a crucial role in cell performance while electric resistance has relatively less influence. The power of thermocell rises significantly as the electrode spacing increases, from about 0.75mW in both directions to 1.75 mW in horizontal direction and 2.75 mW in vertical direction. Convection of electrolyte is unfavorable to cell performance and the critical electrode spacing where convection begins to affect heat transfer is predicted to be the optimized spacing. At all values of electrode spacing in this study, thermocell in vertical direction performs better than that of horizontal direction.

Abstract:Electrochemical thermal modeling of cylindrical cells presents unique challenges compared to other cell formats due to the effect of internal temperature gradients, which typically requires time-consuming simulations due to the number of mesh elements solved numerically. Adding to the difficulty, the emergence of silicon anodes induces voltage hysteresis that affects the cell behavior. In this paper, a reduced-order electrochemical-thermal model is developed for a 21700 cell, which is highlighted by three microcells considering the effects of internal temperature gradients, and an anodic stress model capturing the hysteresis effects caused by the silicon content. The electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical behaviors are investigated. During operations, a temperature gradient arises in the radial direction, resulting in a decrease in local resistance and an increase in reaction rate at the high-temperature core location. The presence of silicon causes a voltage hysteresis that is dominant in the low SOC range, which affects not only the irreversible but also the entropic heat generation. The proposed method achieves an 85% calculation time reduction compared with the existing literature method and a 95% reduction compared with the full order method, while maintaining the accuracy of the terminal voltage and heat generation rate predictions that are validated by experiments.

Three-dimensional Numerical Simulation of Solid Oxide Tuel Cell

Abstract:A three-dimensional mathematical model considering fluid flow, heat transfer, charge transfer, species transport and electrochemical reaction in solid oxide fuel cell was developed. The studied domain consists of fluid channels, electrolyte,diffusion layers and activation layers of cathodes and anodes. The transport phenomena which occurred in the whole solid oxide fuel cell is described by the generalized equation, in which different parameters and source terms are employed for different layers. The flow characteristics, distributions of temperatures and pressures, and component concentrations in 3-D space are obtained by solving the transport equation set coupled with the electrochemical kinetics equations. The general differential equations are solved by computation fluid dynamics technique. A comparison of predicted performance and experimental data in literature was made to validate the mathematical model.

Abstract:A mathematical model was developed to simulate the performance of a direct carbon fuel cell. The model takes account of the electrochemical reaction dynamics, mass-transfer and the electrode processes. An improved packed bed anode was adopted. Polarization losses for the cell components were examined supposing graphite as the fuel and molten carbonate as the electrolyte. The results indicated that the anode activation polarization was the major potential loss in 923–1023 K. The effects of temperature, anode dimension, and carbon particle size on the cell performance were investigated. The model predicted that the power density can be as high as 200–500 W m−2, with carbon particle size in the range 1.0 × 10−7 to 1.0 × 10−4 m and in 923–1023 K and that the overall efficiency of the cell is higher than 55% for low current density and is 45–50% for high current density.

Abstract:A three-dimensional model was developed to simulate the physical and chemical processes(heat and mass transfer,electrochemical reaction,etc.) that occurred in molten carbonate fuel cells.The mathematical model simultaneously accounts for the fluid flow,heat transfer,multicomponent transport,electrochemical kinetics and voltage-current relations.The model was numerically solved using computational fluid dynamics technique to simulate molten carbonate fuel cell with different flow fields(cross-,co-,and counter-flow fields).The spatial distributions of temperature and component concentrations were obtained in detail,and the transport mechanism was described and discussed.It is found that temperature at cathode outlet is higher than the value at anode outlet for different flow fields that the value for co-flow fields is lower than the value for the other two fields;and that the reaction speed is determined by fuel concentration at the anode.

Abstract:The lithium-ion battery is a multi-physics body, which invovles electrical, thermal and electrochemical dynamics. To enhance the understanding of battery system dynamics, in this paper, the electro-thermal coupled model is proposed for 18650 li-ion cell. The cell sizing, physical property of cell material and the cell's direct resistance under different state of charge (SoC) is introduced to calculate the heat generation during charging and discharging process. Finally, the experiment is conducted and compared with the model simulation. The result indicates that the proposed model has great performance in the cell surface temperature prediction.

Abstract:A P2D electrochemical model coupled with a 2D thermal model is built and validated for a commercial type 2.3 Ah ANR26650 cell including the cathode, anode, separator, and current collectors. The spatial and temporal distribution of Li+ concentration on the electrode surface, the flux of Li+ out of the porous active particles or the local current density, the reversible/irreversible reaction heat generation rate, and the temperature distribution inside the battery are analyzed at various discharge rates. The critical thickness of the cathode is systematically studied with the correlated particle size and porosity. It is indicated that the critical thickness of the cathode increases with the particle size and porosity. In order to achieve the optimum electrochemical performance, the critical thickness of the ANR26650 battery can be estimated as 55 μm in the original model. The results indicate that the ionic ohmic heat dominates the ohmic heat generation in porous electrodes. The higher the C-rate is, the more significant role the irreversible heat plays in the generation heat. A battery thermal management system (BTMS) with water cooling plate can lower the module temperature effectively even when it is discharged at a very high C-rate.

Abstract:Fuel cell is a complicated system including mass, momentum, energy balances and electrochemical reaction. This paper develops a dynamic one dimensional mathematical model of high temperature direct internal reforming solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Ordinary differential equations suited for the quick simulation was transferred from the partial differential equations, and modular based SOFC model was established. This model realizes the analysis of mole concentration and energy conservations, and the electrochemical reactions, and satisfies the quick dynamic simulation. The steady-state and dynamic performances of high temperature SOFC were analyzed for some condition. The result proved that the model is suited for SOFC base performances.

Abstract:Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that directly transform chemical energy into electricity, which are promising for future energy systems, since they are energy efficient and, when hydrogen is used as fuel, there are no direct emissions of greenhouse gases. The cell performance depends strongly on the material characteristics, the operating conditions and the chemical reactions that occur inside the cell. The chemical- and electrochemical reaction rates depend on temperature, material structure, catalytic activity, degradation and the partial pressures for the different species components. There is a lack of information, within the open literature, concerning the fundamentals behind these reactions. Experimental as well as modeling studies are needed to reduce this gap.In this study experimental data collected from an intermediate temperature standard SOFC with H-2/H2O in the fuel stream are used to validate a previously developed computational fluid dynamics model based on the finite element method. The developed model is based on the governing equations of heat and mass transport and fluid flow, which are solved together with kinetic expressions for internal reforming reactions of hydrocarbon fuels and electrochemistry. This model is further updated to describe the experimental environment concerning cell design. Discussion on available active area for electrochemical reactions and average ionic transport distance from the anodic- to the cathodic three-phase boundary (TPB) are presented. The fuel inlet mole fractions are changed for the validated model to simulate a H-2/H2O mixture and 30 % pre-reformed natural gas.

Abstract:A mathermatical model of tubular solid oxide fuel cells(SOFC),with pure hydrogen as fuel,has been developed by coupling the velocity field,the temperature field,the electric potential field and the species concentration field with one-another.A Siemens-Westinghouse AES tubular SOFC was then herewith dimensionally simulated.Simulation results indicate that species concentration as well as current density distribution are both closely connected with the mode of operation.Within the voltage range of simulation,ohmic polarization plays the principal role.SOFC's performance can be promoted by raising the fuel cell's mean working temperature,by improving the microstructure of the porous electrode and by substituting pure oxygen for air as the oxidant.Figs 8 and refs 10.

Abstract:A steady-state and three-dimensional (3-D) model has been established for an intermediate temperature planar anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell. The model couples charge transfer, mass transfer, momentum transfer, and energy transfer equations. Chemical reactions (methane cracking reaction (MCR), Boudouard reaction, methane steam reforming reaction (MSR), and water gas shift reaction (WGSR)) and electrochemical oxidation of H2 and CO are considered. The variations of carbon activity, fuel utilization, and temperature distribution have been discussed with polarization and concentration separately. The thermal stress distribution in the positive electrode-electrolyte-negative electrode (P-E-N) structure is also discussed. The simulation results agree well with the literature.

Abstract:This study presents a novel 0-D phase change model with ledge solidification implementation that explicitly tracks a two-dimensional interface and temperature profile on the solid. The model has been validated through 1-D and 2-D test cases, demonstrating its accuracy in predicting the phase change front and behavior in complex geometries. The model's efficiency and limitations have been compared to a 2-D model, highlighting the advantages of the new model in relevant industrial applications, particularly in the aluminum electrolysis cell. The new model's ability to be coupled with other models, such as those for multiphase fluid flow and electromagnetics, provides a more comprehensive understanding of the aluminum electrolysis process, enabling the development of advanced control strategies. The model's potential for investigating the effects of different process parameters on ledge formation and energy efficiency makes it a valuable tool for optimizing industrial processes, reducing energy consumption, and mitigating environmental impact. These results provide a solid foundation for future research in numerical modeling of phase change and heat transfer and highlight the potential of advanced computer models to improve industrial processes and reduce energy consumption.Graphical Abstract

Planar numerical simulation on thermal field of magnesium reduction cell

Abstract:A finite volume model of magnesium reduction cell is built and the thermal field of the cell is computed according to the finite volume analysis software Fluent.The thermal filed for 2000A pilot-scale magnesium reduction cell is analyzed and studied by using the mode1,and compared with practical temperature distribution measured by thermocouple.The results show that the simulation results almost coincide with the practical data(the temperature difference is less than 10℃).Therefore the model provides a good method for designing and optimizing of industrial magnesium reduction cells structure by illustrating the nearly true thermal field distribution of the cell.

Abstract:A 2-d,steady-state,non-isothermal,two-phase flow model with electrochemical reaction was presented based on the mixture model in literature.In this model,catalyst layer was regarded as thin layer rather than interface without thickness;phase change of water was considered in species equation and energy equation,as well as momentum equation.Effect of stoichiometric rate of air and hydrogen on oxygen and water transfer and their concentration distribution in PEM fuel cell was analyzed.The results are very helpful for optimizing operating parameters and application of PEM fuel cells.

Abstract:Fuel cells are a promising source of clean energy. To find optimal parameters for their operation, modeling is necessary, which is quite difficult to implement taking into account all the significant effects occurring in them. We aim to develop a previously unrealized model in COMSOL Multiphysics that, on one hand, will consider the influence of electrochemical heating and non-isothermal fluid flow on the temperature field and reaction rates, and on the other hand, will demonstrate the operating mode of the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) on carbonaceous fuel. This model incorporates a range of physical phenomena, including electron and ion transport, gas species diffusion, electrochemical reactions, and heat transfer, to simulate the performance of the SOFC. The findings provide a detailed view of reactant concentration, temperature, and current distribution, enabling the calculation of power output. The developed model was compared with a 1-kW industrial prototype operating on hydrogen and showed good agreement in the volt-ampere characteristic with a deviation not exceeding 5% for the majority of the operating range. The fuel cell exhibits enhanced performance on hydrogen, generating 1340 W/m2 with a current density of 0.25 A/cm2. When fueled by methane, it produces 1200 W/m2 at the same current density. Using synthesis gas, it reaches its peak power of 1340 W/m2 at a current density of 0.3 A/cm2.

Abstract:A two-dimensional multi-component Lattice Boltzmann (LB) model based on kinetic theory for gas mixtures combined with a representative elementary volume (REV) scale LB algorithm based on the Brinkman equation for flows in porous media is developed to simulate the mass transport in the porous anode and cathode of SOFC. The concentration overpotential is calculated and compared with that obtained by the extended Fick's Model (FM), the Dusty Gas Model (DGM), and the Stefan Maxwell Model (SMM), as well as the experimental results. It is concluded that LB method is a much more accurate method for the simulation of mass transfer within fuel cell electrodes. Moreover, the effects of different electrode geometrical and operating parameters on concentration polarization are also investigated.

Abstract:The paper presents a set of two-dimensional molten carbonate fuel cell mathematical models, considering the electrical, mass and heat transfer characteristics of a molten carbonate fuel cell. A dynamic simulation model was built under the VC++ environment. The steady state and dynamic simulation results for a cross-flow molten carbonate fuel cell were obtained using the simulation model. The results are appropriate for the design and operation of molten carbonate fuel cells.

Abstract:Based on the conservation of energy and conservation of mass, as well as considering the mass transfer in the electrodes-electrolyte interface and its effect on Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) thermal characteristics, this paper presents a mathematical model to modify the dynamic performance of MCFC. Using the method of weighted residuals (MWR) which possesses high precision for the solution of partial differential equations, and the Matlab system function which is efficient for numerical resolution and simulation, a dynamic simulation model of MCFC is created. The results of the simulation show that the mass transfer in the electrodes-electrolyte interface notably affects Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) thermal characteristics, and there is a distribution of temperature both in the electrodes-electrolyte and in the fuel gas as well as in the oxidant gas. The temperature of electrodes-electrolyte increases and that of oxidant gas decreases with increments in the flow rate of both the fuel gas and oxidant gas.
