Abstract:Graphene is a two-dimensional nanomaterial composed of 1–10 layers of carbon atoms in a honeycomb lattice. It has been 15 years since the first isolation of few-layer graphene from graphite by the Scotch Tape method. Worldwide research efforts on graphene have been rewarded with enormous breakthroughs in fundamental science and innovative applications. To achieve an influential impact on society, graphene must be manufactured at large scales, be superior to existing products, and be safe to use. In this Perspective, we highlight relevant issues in the quest for commercialization of graphene-containing products. We showcase achievements in improving graphene synthesis while also discussing concerns regarding graphene standardization and graphene's impact on the environment and human health.

Abstract:Graphene means one layer of carbon atoms,one of truly two-dimensional crystals.Some very pe- culiar properties of graphene,such as bipolar supercurrent,chiral tunneling of relativistic particles,absence of Ander- son localization,anomalous quantum Hall effect,are summarized in this paper.These properties of graphene open new perspectives for carbon-based electronics which may replace Si-based electronics in CMOS chips.Its other potential ap- plications are also described.

Abstract:Graphene,a one-atom-thick and two-dimensional(2D) planar sheet of sp2-bonded carbon atoms that are densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice,has been a subject of extensive academic and commercial interest for potential use as the active materials in the fields of materials science,chemistry,physics and engineering due to its outstanding electronic,photonic,thermal and mechanical properties.It can be wrapped up into 0D fullerenes,rolled into 1D nanotubes or stacked into 3D graphite.In this paper the important aspects of graphenes,including preparation methods,chemical modification and potential applications,have been highlighted in detail.Basically graphenes can be prepared by micromechanical exfoliation,epitaxial growth on electrically insulating surfaces such as SiC,chemical vapor deposition,chemical synthesis and the creation of colloidal suspensions.By covalent or,non-covalent modification of graphenes,a large number of the intersting and promising functional materials have been prepared.Many challenges still remain.Future work should be focused on in-depth studies of graphene chemistry and materials science to provide a detailed understanding of the factors affecting the materials performance.

Abstract:In the last two decades, graphene and its derivative structures have proved effective in various applications, having a significant impact on society. In all kinds of research field whether it is the energy, environmental, biomedical or any interdisciplinary field, graphene have proved effective. The modifiable physical and chemical properties of its derivative products have made way for advanced research. Here in this review, we have discussed the advent of graphene-based materials in research over the past 20 years. Research areas related to the fields of environmental, energy and electronic, and biomedical have been discussed. For environmental research pollution, purification, and analyte sensing aspects were considered. In energy research, green energy generation and energy storage materials based on graphene were discussed. Finally, in the biomedical sections, various biological applications of graphene were discussed. We have also tried to highlight the engineering aspect and synthesis pathways that led to the rise of the graphene empire in every domain of materials science and nanoscience research. The overall details in this review may help the reader, in general, to understand why graphene is designated as the jack of all trades in research.

Abstract:The emergence of graphene nanosheet (GN, 2010 Nobel Prize for Physics) has recently opened up an exciting new field in the science and technology of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with continuously growing academic and technological impetus. GN exhibits unique electronic, optical, magnetic, thermal and mechanical properties arising from its strictly 2D structure and thus has many important technical applications. Actually, GN-based materials have enormous potential to rival or even surpass the performance of carbon nanotube-based counterparts, given that cheap, large-scale production and processing methods for high-quality GN become available. Therefore, the studies on GN in the aspects of chemistry, physical, materials, biology and interdisciplinary science have been in full flow in the past five years. Abstract:Graphene, as an intermediate phase between fullerene and carbon nanotube, has aroused much interests among the scientific community due to its outstanding electronic, mechanical, and thermal properties.With excellent electrical conductivity of 6000 S/cm, which is independent on chirality, graphene is a promising material for high-performance nanoelectronics, transparent conductor, as well as polymer composites. On account of its Young’s Modulus of 1 TPa and ultimate strength of 130 GPa, isolated graphene sheet is considered to be among the strongest materials ever measured. Comparable with the single-walled carbon nanotube bundle,graphene has a thermal conductivity of 5000 W/（m·K）, which suggests a potential application of graphene in polymer matrix for improving thermal properties of the graphene/polymer composite. Furthermore, graphene exhibits a very high surface area, up to a value of 2630 m~2/g. All of these outstanding properties suggest a wide application for this nanometer-thick, two-dimensional carbon material. This review article presents an overview of the significant advancement in graphene research: preparation, functionalization as well as the properties of graphene will be discussed. In addition, the feasibility and potential applications of graphene in areas, such as sensors, nanoelectronics and nanocomposites materials, will also be reviewed.

Abstract:<span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec1"><p class="a-plus-plus">Graphene is a name given to the thinnest material manufacturable on record, which is made of a monolayer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice. The discovery of graphene has led to the award of at least two Nobel Prizes in Physics within a short timespan. This article discusses the magic applications, brought by the imperfect graphene, which were thought to be impossible. It focuses on the recent demonstrations of graphene electronics that operation mechanisms rely on defects in graphene. In applications such as graphene-silicon technology, twistronics, spintronics, and biomedical electronics, imperfections in graphene are at the center of technology advancements. Appreciable imperfections in graphene vary from dopants, folding, stacking mismatch to atomic-level defects. Bulky volume defects like ad-atom clustering compromise the benefit of graphene in terms of thinness. In short, for new materials such as graphene, it is important that researchers understand, explore, and use the accessible materials on hand rather than pursuing scalable materials with perfection.</p></span><span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec2 outputmedium-online"><h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic </h3></span>

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed dynamic and fruitful developments of carbon materials. Particularly, graphene fibers emerge as a new type of carbon material directly composed of graphene sheets with unique structure, excellent electrical conductivity, strength, and lightweight properties, thus attracting increasing interest of scientists in multi-disciplines ranging from chemistry, materials science, biology to medical science. In this Perspective, we summarize latest progresses in the synthesis of graphene fibers and discuss their pros and cons. Then, various strategies for improving the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of graphene fibers are introduced in detail. Subsequently, recent applications of graphene fibers are highlighted, such as self-powered devices, photovoltaics, neural recording microelectrodes, etc., aiming to present the state of the art in this fast-growing field. Finally, the current limitation and future prospect of large-scale application of graphene fibers are also proposed. With the continuous development of materials and techniques, graphene fibers are projected to take more important roles in diverse fields in the future.

Abstract:Recent experimental and industrial advances in the field of nanotechnologies have boosted the development of interdisciplinary research, one of the most constructive and inspiring of human pursuits. Many scientists specialize in manufacturing new forms of nanomaterials that hold promise for various applications such as medical diagnosis and therapy, environmental monitoring, energy production and storage, molecular computing and much more. Graphene, an increasingly important nanosized material reported in 2004, has emerged to become an exciting two-dimensional material with distinct attributes that has attracted great interest in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology and medicine, as well as their related interdisciplinarities. The unique nature of graphene makes it stand out and applicable to various technologies. Its photoelectric properties and inherent Raman spectroscopy make it an ideal candidate for the development of new devices and methods in many branches of life sciences and technology. The electronic properties of graphene make it a highly useful nanomaterial. It carries a high charge mobility which allows it to be extensively applied to field effect transistors. Graphene also has unparalleled transparency and conductivity, making it a viable electrode in solar cells. In addition, the specific area of graphene makes energy storage possible. Although these properties are inherent to the compound, graphene can also be modified into a better nanomaterial. Due to its outstanding performance, graphene development shows great promise in several scientific fields. This paper aims to elaborate on the details of current studies using graphene with regards to the optical and electronic characteristics, fabrication techniques, and various relevant applications.

Abstract:The year 2014 marks the first decade of the rise of graphene. Graphene, a single atomic layer of carbon atoms in sp2 bonding configuration having a honeycomb structure, has now become a well-known and well-established material. Among some of its many outstanding fundamental properties, one can mention a very high carrier mobility, a very large spin diffusion length, unsurpassed mechanical properties as graphene is the strongest material ever measured and an exceptional thermal conductivity scaling more than one order of magnitude above that of copper. After the first years of the graphene rush, graphene growth is now well controlled using various methods like epitaxial growth on silicon carbide substrate, chemical vapour deposition (CVD) or plasma techniques on metal, insulator or semiconductor substrates. More applied research is now taking over the initial studies on graphene production. Indeed, graphene is a promising material for many advanced applications such as, but not limited to, electronic, spintronics, sensors, photonics, micro/nano-electromechanical (MEMS/NEMS) systems, super-capacitors or touch-screen technologies. In this context, this Special Issue of the Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics on graphene reviews some of the recent achievements, progress and prospects in this field. It includes a collection of seventeen invited articles covering the current status and future prospects of some selected topics of strong current interest. This Special Issue is organized in four sections. The first section is dedicated to graphene devices, and opens with an article by de Heer et al on an investigation of integrating graphene devices with silicon complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Then, a study by Svintsov et al proposes a lateral all-graphene tunnel field-effect transistor (FET) with a high on/off current switching ratio. Next, Tsukagoshi et al present how a band-gap opening occurs in a graphene bilayer by using a perpendicular electric field to operate logic gates. Plaçais et al then show the realization of graphene microwave nano-transistors that are especially suitable for fast charge detectors. Matsumoto et al describe next some interesting graphene-based biosensor applications, while the following article by Otsuji et al shows recent advances in plasmonics in terahertz device applications. This section ends with the Dollfus et al article dealing with non-linear effects in graphene devices investigated by simulation methods. The second section concerns the electronic and transport properties and includes four articles. The first one by Gurzadyan et al provides an investigation of graphene oxide in water by femtosecond pump–probe spectroscopy to study its transient absorption properties. Jouault et al then review the quantum Hall effect of self-organized graphene monolayers epitaxially grown on the C-face of SiC. Next, Petkovic et al report on the observation of edge magneto-plasmons in graphene. Finally, Roche and Valenzuela focus on the limits of conventional views in graphene spin transport and offer novel perspectives for further progress. The third section addresses graphene tailoring and functionalization as studied by Genorio and Znidarsic for graphene nanoribbons, or by atomic intercalation as shown by the two articles from Starke and Forti, and from Bisson et al. The last section is devoted to graphene growth and morphology. Ogino et al first describe a method to grow graphene on insulating substrates using polymer films as a carbon source. Then, Suemitsu et al show the recent progresses in epitaxial graphene formation on cubic silicon carbide thin films. Finally, Norimatsu and Kusunoki investigate the structural properties and morphology of epitaxial graphene grown on hexagonal silicon carbide substrates by using a high-resolution transmission electron microscope, their article closing this Special Issue .

Abstract:Graphene, a single layer of sp2-bonded carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, has attracted a plethora of attention because of its remarkable physical, mechanical, electronic and optical properties. This paper reviews recent advances in the preparation methods of graphene. Recently, graphene materials research has reached an unprecedented event, and the graphene preparation method also is endless. A lot of papers have been reported, but not an exhaustive list of various preparation methods and its principles. In this article, based on the previous preparations of graphene, comprehensive fabrication methods were summarized, and then, put forward a new vision and perspectives.
