Abstract:Introduction. The advent of generative AI has democratized art creation, enabling individuals without formal training to produce visually appealing digital artworks. However, it is not yet well-understood why and how laypeople engage with AI in creative information practice. Method. This study conducted semi-structured interviews with 17 participants, aiming to understand the motivations for laypeople's engagement with AI painting and the challenges they encounter. Analysis. The interviews were analysed using open coding and thematic analysis, with two independent coders achieving a substantial inter-coder reliability score. Results. Our findings reveal that laypeople's engagement with AI painting is a practice-oriented information practice, influenced by social and contextual factors. The engagement process is iterative, starting with a user prompt and AI-generated initial output, followed by continuous refinement. Laypeople engage with AI painting for emotional motivations, personal utilitarian motivations, and social interaction. Notable challenges include image quality, technological limitations, and personal constraints. Conclusion. These findings provide empirical evidence of the potential and limitations of AI in creative information practice. This understanding is vital for informing the design of future AI tools to enhance the human-AI collaborative experience in creative endeavours.

Abstract:Human adoption of artificial intelligence(AI)technique is largely hampered because of the increasing complexity and opa-city of AI development.Explainable AI(XAI)techniques with various methods and tools have been developed to bridge this gap between high-performance black-box AI models and human understanding.However,the current adoption of XAI technique still lacks"human-centered"guidance for designing proper solutions to meet different stakeholders'needs in XAI practice.We first summarize a human-centered demand framework to categorize different stakeholders into five key roles with specific demands by reviewing existing research and then extract six commonly used human-centered XAI evaluation measures which are helpful for validating the effect of XAI.In addition,a taxonomy of XAI methods is developed for visual computing with analysis of method properties.Holding clearer hu-man demands and XAI methods in mind,we take a medical image diagnosis scenario as an example to present an overview of how ex-tant XAI approaches for visual computing fulfil stakeholders'human-centered demands in practice.And we check the availability of open-source XAI tools for stakeholders'use.This survey provides further guidance for matching diverse human demands with appropri-ate XAI methods or tools in specific applications with a summary of main challenges and future work toward human-centered XAI in practice.
EasyPainter: Customizing Your Own Paintings

Abstract:With the advance in deep learning techniques, increasing attention has been paid to studying the creation capacity of artificial intelligence (AI) models. AI-based painting image generation not only streamlines tedious tasks of professional users but also enlightens a broad range of casual users for artistic creation. This paper focuses on customizing painting images with limited inputs, i.e., a reference painting image as the exemplar and a conditional input that users could easily specify to reflect their ideas. We show the challenges of directly applying existing solutions to the problem of painting customizing and provide a solution to address them. We also develop the EasyPainter, a user-friendly interface system to better understand AI's creative and exploratory potential in customizing painting images. Our demo video is available here.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) painting represents a burgeoning field in AI-generated content; however, there is limited research on users' preferences and biases concerning AI painting compared to traditional forms of art. This study seeks to shed light on the communication and interaction dynamics between painters and AI tools in the process of creating a satisfactory image. A self-report study involving 52 volunteers and 312 reports was conducted, analyzing users' communication strategies amid AI painting-related communication breakdowns. The investigation aimed to unveil users' experiences, behavioral patterns, psychological motivations, and needs. The study identified three primary communication barrier categories in AI painting and proposed 10 corresponding repair strategies. It established a user experience framework within the evolving dynamics of user interaction, encompassing behavioral patterns and psychological motivations. Users' perceptions of the AI painting system significantly impacted the interaction process, leading to an anthropomorphic view of the system as a "potential assistant" and the continuous use of effective strategies to "train" the AI painting system. Conversely, perceiving the system as a "flawed collaborator" prompted the adaptive expectation strategy. Persistent repair failures may lead to users attributing responsibility to the limitation of AI system, culminating in interaction termination. The study also explores the influence of user interaction experiences, including user background and interaction efficiency. By modeling users' behavior patterns and underlying psychological cognitions, this research enhances the understanding of user psychology and preferences, an understanding that can be used to improve the efficiency of human–computer communication.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of human-AI (artificial intelligence) collaboration in creating Chinese landscape painting, this article aims to develop the relationship between AI aesthetics and HCI in the context of Chinese aesthetics. We construct a multi-level analysis framework and propose three unique AI Aesthetics models under the framework—the dynamic brushwork (bi-mo) model, the imaged mind (xin-yin) model, and the embodied narrative (shi-jing) model. We believe that the most promising AI aesthetics approach is to promote the collaboration between human and AI. The primary research task at present is to develop interactive creation platforms. In the long run, brain-AI interactive communication will help realize mutual inspiration between human and AI, thereby stimulating more creativity.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in different fields are developing rapidly, among which AI painting technology, as an emerging technology, has received wide attention from users for its creativity and efficiency. This study aimed to investigate the factors that influence user acceptance of the use of AIBPS by proposing an extended model that combines the Extended Technology Acceptance Model (ETAM) with an AI-based Painting System (AIBPS). A questionnaire was administered to 528 Chinese participants, and validated factor analysis data and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were used to test our hypotheses. The findings showed that Hedonic Motivation (HM) and Perceived Trust (PE) had a positive effect (+) on users’ Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), while Previous Experience (PE) and Technical Features (TF) had no effect (−) on users’ Perceived Usefulness (PU). This study provides an important contribution to the literature on AIBPS and the evaluation of systems of the same type, which helps to promote the sustainable development of AI in different domains and provides a possible space for the further extension of TAM, thus helping to improve the user experience of AIBPS. The results of this study provide insights for system developers and enterprises to better motivate users to use AIBPS.

"Confrontation or Acceptance": Understanding Novice Visual Artists' Perception towards AI-assisted Art Creation

Abstract:The rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence (G-AI) has transformed the creative arts landscape by producing novel artwork, whereas in the same time raising ethical concerns. While previous studies have addressed these concerns from technical and societal viewpoints, there is a lack of discussion from an HCI perspective, especially considering the community's perception and the visual artists as human factors. Our study investigates G-AI's impact on visual artists and their relationship with GAI to inform HCI research. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 novice visual artists from an art college in the university with G-AI courses and practices. Our findings reveal (1) the mis-conception and the evolving adoption of visual artists, (2) the miscellaneous opinions of the society on visual artists' creative work, and (3) the co-existence of confrontation and collaboration between visual artists and G-AI. We explore future HCI research opportunities to address these issues.

Abstract:With the rapid development of AI technology, ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chat robot released by OpenAI on November 30, 2022, exploded on the Internet. After ChatGPT exploded on the Internet, AI painting gradually came into peoples sight. At the same time, the debate about AI painting has also become a hot topic of daily discussion. By researching and summarizing the literature on the Internet and analyzing the concepts related to AI painting, this paper will focus on the drawing principle of AI painting and the pros and cons of AI painting as the main research questions, and then the impact on the emergence and development of AI painting have a discussion. While allowing more readers to understand the duality of the impact of AI painting, it also emphasizes that artificial intelligence lacks the emotional depth of art created by humans. This paper proposes that artificial intelligence can enhance the potential of human creativity, but the quality and creative context of the main works come from the infinite possibilities of human artists. The future prospects of AI-generated art are expected to be complex and evolving, but subject to constant examination.

Abstract:Human-AI interaction is pervasive across many areas of our day to day lives. In this paper, we investigate human-AI collaboration in the context of a collaborative AI-driven word association game with partially observable information. In our experiments, we test various dimensions of subjective social perceptions (rapport, intelligence, creativity and likeability) of participants towards their partners when participants believe they are playing with an AI or with a human. We also test subjective social perceptions of participants towards their partners when participants are presented with a variety of confidence levels. We ran a large scale study on Mechanical Turk (n=164) of this collaborative game. Our results show that when participants believe their partners were human, they found their partners to be more likeable, intelligent, creative and having more rapport and use more positive words to describe their partner's attributes than when they believed they were interacting with an AI partner. We also found no differences in game outcome including win rate and turns to completion. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative findings, we discuss AI agent transparency, include design implications for tools incorporating or supporting human-AI collaboration, and lay out directions for future research. Our findings lead to implications for other forms of human-AI interaction and communication.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) Generated Content has made great progress in many fields. Those AI art works gradually reshape contemporary understanding of creativity. The unique creative ability of human beings may also be challenged. This paper takes AIGC as the research object and carries out a grouping experiment based on 240 participants. We found that Anthropomorphism and Autonomy have no effect on the evaluation of AI paintings and AI "painter" identity, but in together their have a combined positive impact on both independent variables. The existence of moderating effect reveals the phenomenon of on-the-spot stimulation similar to the strong effect theory. Meanwhile, the evaluation of paintings positively affects the perception of AI "painter" identity. The subjectivity of AI comes from the double superposition of its external and inner characteristics, which may suggest AI with both human-like appearance and function can be regarded as a person with social role identity.

Abstract:The recent advances of AI technology, particularly in AI-Generated Content (AIGC), have enabled everyone to easily generate beautiful paintings with simple text description. With the stunning quality of AI paintings, it is widely questioned whether there still exists difference between human and AI paintings and whether human artists will be replaced by AI. To answer these questions, we develop a computational framework combining neural latent space and aesthetics features with visual analytics to investigate the difference between human and AI paintings. First, with categorical comparison of human and AI painting collections, we find that AI artworks show distributional difference from human artworks in both latent space and some aesthetic features like strokes and sharpness, while in other aesthetic features like color and composition there is less difference. Second, with individual artist analysis of Picasso, we show human artists' strength in evolving new styles compared to AI. Our findings provide concrete evidence for the existing discrepancies between human and AI paintings and further suggest improvements of AI art with more consideration of aesthetics and human artists' involvement.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) painting technology and its profound impact on the traditional art field. Firstly, the paper describes the technical foundation of AI painting, including how to transform text descriptions into visual images through deep learning models. Then, the paper focuses on stable diffusion, an open source tool that has attracted much attention in the field of AI painting, and discusses its application potential in artistic creation as well as the possible copyright and ethical issues. Then, the paper further discusses the challenges of AI painting in artistic creation, such as the protection of originality, the maintenance of artistic value, and ethical considerations. Finally, the paper puts forward a series of governance suggestions aimed at balancing the innovation potential of AI painting with the traditional values of the art world, while emphasizing the possibility of cooperation between human artists and AI in artistic creation, and how this cooperation can jointly promote the future development of the art field.

Abstract:Investigating how people respond to and view AI-created artworks is becoming increasingly crucial as the technology's current application spreads due to its affordability and accessibility. This study examined how AI art alters people's evaluation, purchase intention, and collection intention toward Chinese-style and Western-style paintings, and whether art expertise plays a role. Study 1 recruited participants without professional art experience (non-experts) and found that those who made the paintings would not change their liking rating, purchase intention, and collection intention. In addition, they showed ingroup preference, favoring Chinese-style relative to Western-style paintings, in line with previous evidence on cultural preference in empirical aesthetics. Study 2 further investigated the modulation effect of art expertise. Art experts evaluated less favorably (less liking, lower purchase, and collection intentions) AI-generated paintings relative to artist-made paintings, while non-experts showed no preference. There was also an interaction effect between the author and the art expertise and interaction between the painting style and the art expertise. Collectively, the findings in this study showed that who made the art matters for experts and that the painting style affects aesthetic evaluation and ultimate reception of it. These results would also provide implications for AI-art practitioners.

AI paintings vs. Human Paintings? Deciphering Public Interactions and Perceptions towards AI-Generated Paintings on TikTok

Abstract:With the development of generative AI technology, a vast array of AI-generated paintings (AIGP) have gone viral on social media like TikTok. However, some negative news about AIGP has also emerged. For example, in 2022, numerous painters worldwide organized a large-scale anti-AI movement because of the infringement in generative AI model training. This event reflected a social issue that, with the development and application of generative AI, public feedback and feelings towards it may have been overlooked. Therefore, to investigate public interactions and perceptions towards AIGP on social media, we analyzed user engagement level and comment sentiment scores of AIGP using human painting videos as a baseline. In analyzing user engagement, we also considered the possible moderating effect of the aesthetic quality of Paintings. Utilizing topic modeling, we identified seven reasons, including looks too real, looks too scary, ambivalence, etc., leading to negative public perceptions of AIGP. Our work may provide instructive suggestions for future generative AI technology development and avoid potential crises in human-AI collaboration.

Abstract:With the advancement of technology represented by artificial intelligence, art creation is becoming increasingly rich, and content expression is intelligent, interactive, and data-driven, making the relationship between technology, art, and people increasingly close and bringing opportunities for the development of emerging interaction. Artificial intelligence technologies aim to perfectly replicate the human mind by enabling natural responses based on the surrounding environment, decoding emotions, and recognizing human traits within the energy range. Driven by AI technology, interactive art no longer focuses on a single audiovisual sensory experience but rather on integrated artistic expressions that are highly interactive, kinetic, and emotional, based on the study of natural human behavior and integrated senses, combined with intelligence. In this paper, we first sort out the intersection of AI technology development and interactive art expression streams on the timeline based on historical development and analyze the deconstructive relationship between the two from the macroperspective of the historical development of technology and art. First, based on the conceptual connotation, development history, technical application, and singularity outlook of AI, we identify the current characteristics and development trends of interactive art; second, based on exploring the advantages of AI technology, we propose the impact of AI on the creative thinking, creative mode, and artistic experience of interactive art and establish the paradigm of interactive art creation in the context of AI. It solves the problem that experts are unable to quickly locate the category of painters when facing different styles of unsigned digital Chinese painting images in the authenticity identification task.

Abstract:In a context in which artificial intelligence (AI) assists humans, there is a growing trend to design AI systems with more straightforward result displays. The objective of such design is to enhance human comprehension and promote collaboration with AI. Nonetheless, such design can result in excessive dependence on AI, leading to inadequate human input and hampering the achievement of satisfactory and efficient collaboration. This study investigated this trade-off from the perspective of cognitive load theory. We empirically analyzed the effects of adopting a more explicit method of presenting information in a loan servicing company with a quasi-experimental design. Our findings verified that a more explicit presentation of AI information led to both greater compliance with AI and higher performance. However, it also resulted in less active thinking from human evaluators, particularly in scenarios with greater complexity, for which greater human involvement is expected. The findings also revealed that the work experience of the human evaluators could mitigate this adverse effect of presentation adjustment. To counteract the consequences of a more explicit AI presentation, we conducted a second field experiment in which nudging message strategies were used to encourage active human contribution. This study offers non-trivial insights for understanding the delicate balance between AI efficiency and human involvement in human–AI collaboration. It paves paths with practical implications for designing effective AI systems that optimize collaborative performance.
Users' continuance intention towards an AI painting application: An extended expectation confirmation model

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) painting has emerged as a leading intelligence service. This study aims to empirically investigate users' continuance intention toward AI painting applications by utilizing and expanding the Expectation Confirmation Model (ECM), Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), and the Flow Theory. A comprehensive research model is proposed. A total of 443 questionnaires were distributed to users with AI painting experiences for data collection. The hypotheses were tested through structural equation modeling. The primary conclusions drawn from this research include: 1) Confirmation plays a crucial role, significantly and positively predicting satisfaction and social impact. 2) Personal innovativeness has a significant effect on confirmation. 3) Satisfaction, flow experience, and social influence directly and positively predict intention, with social influence showing the most significant impact, while perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment, and performance expectancy show no significant impact on intention. 4) Habit plays a negative moderating role in the association between social influence and continued intention to use. These findings offer valuable insights and inspiration for users seeking to understand the appropriate utilization of AI painting and provide actionable directions for the development of AI painting.

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, AI painting, as an emerging technique, is gradually showcasing its unique charm and broad application prospects in the field of art design. This paper takes the representative AI painting Space Opera House as an example to conduct an in-depth analysis of AI painting from the perspectives of visual language and aesthetic expression. It explores the challenges and opportunities AI presents to traditional art design and further examines the current application and future development directions of AI in art design. The research results indicate that AI painting offers significant advantages in enhancing artistic creation efficiency, enriching artistic expression methods, and achieving personalized design. However, it also faces challenges in terms of originality and aesthetic diversity.

Abstract:Over the past few years, specialised online and offline press blossomed with articles about art made "with" Artificial Intelligence (AI) but the narrative is rapidly changing. In fact, in October 2018, the auction house Christie's sold an art piece allegedly made "by" an AI. We draw from philosophy of art and science arguing that AI as a technical object is always intertwined with human nature despite its level of autonomy. However, the use of creative autonomous agents has cultural and social implications in the way we experience art as creators as well as audience. Therefore, we highlight the importance of an interdisciplinary dialogue by promoting a culture of transparency of the technology used, awareness of the meaning of technology in our society and the value of creativity in our lives.
